Everybody said that they get along together well. Every doubted that they would make it. Shinobi didn't make it when it comes to relationships. Not often anyway. What usually helped was a family, and neither of them wanted to even think of a family any time soon.
When they themselves tried to figure out why they were together they would get confused and come up with a very logical statement that it was – illogical.
She used to dislike smokers. He didn't really appreciate the company of the more "silent types", and yet here they were. She liked the taste of tobacco on his lips, and he enjoyed her quiet company.
The strangest thing about them however was how they dealt with what shinobi usually had problems dealing with – death –
After bad missions she didn't go home. No. As soon as she passed the huge gateway into Konoha, Yuuhi Kurenai headed straight to the apartment of Sarutobi Asuma (they still lived apart, and probably always would). She would go in through the window and leave her shoes outside. He would be waiting for her no matter what crazy hour it was. Neither of them would say anything, sometimes a barely audible "Asuma…"
They didn't have to. Neither of them wanted to ask, nor more so, answer. So they didn't say anything.
The bearded Jounin would get up, and with the exception of the bed-lamp, he would turn of all the lights in the apartment. Then, he would softly walk to radio and put on some music, so quiet that you could barely hear it. And in the dark apartment, filled with the faintest music, they would dance. And with their dancing fear and anger would gradually give way to comfort and safety. With each step, one drop of blood was washed of their hands. With each swirl one pair of dead, accusing eyes would close.
The reason why they were going to probably make it, was their dancing. It was a substitute for family. So they danced.
AN: I hope I managed to keep them more or less incharacter. (though I realize that the whole dancing thing was a bit OC) Well, please tell me if I interpreted them right. If they're out of character please tell me (and give me some hints) soI can fix it...
