He did hear what she has said last night…
Naruto and I…
He cannot hear the rest because his heart ache when she mention Naruto's name with a tone so different from the tone which she always use when she with him. Therefore, he pretends he did not hear anything.
However, he makes a fatal mistake…
The whole sentence is "Naruto and I…not anymore…" (Author: my grammar not that good).
That explains why he looks so surprise when Hinata come. He was training and seems very tired. She hand him a handkerchief, blush, and run away when he thank her. He was confused, but smile as he realize how funny her face look when she run away.
"She so cute…" He thinks.
"Naruto and I…" Suddenly, he recalls the event of last night when he asked her about Naruto. (He did not know why he does that, either.) A jolt of pain goes through his heart and head.
Then, he looks at the handkerchief and sees something that confused him but make him feel happy.
The handkerchief has his name on it.
Hinata probably have done this.
And when he meet her again, in the hallway, she blush, with a blush that will never fail to make him smile.
And Neji smile, with a smile that melt everything away.

Author note: for someone cannot understand about the handkerchief: in Japan, when a girl give a boy a handkerchief with his name sew on it, it mean the girl fall in love with the boy.
