I quickly explain to my parents what we're about to do, and while they give me worried looks they give me permission to go. Then Jada does the same with Dylon, the worried look again from him. Whatever, I feel much better after that nap.
We walk towards where Jada said the street was, and wow did it show this road hadn't been used in a while. The concrete was broken in many places, grass and saplings sprouting through the cracks, trees on where lawns would be that covered the sky. Guess the city gave up on maintenance since no one drove here.
"Listen I know I was kind of a jackass back when I was ordering you to help fix this, and I just want to apologize again Will."
"It's fine, I was equally of a jackass with my response to that, I was just really hurt because of... our history together."
There's an awkward pause between us. With no one to fill the silence between us I keep talking.
"Anyways, since then I've been trying to think of ways to turn this whole ordeal into a good thing. Do you have any ideas?"
She makes a strange smirk, I'm familiar with it as the face she makes when she's thinking. "Well, when Dylon first saw me and Raven like... This." She gestures towards herself, obviously referring to the transformation. "Once he realized it was us, he was trying to do some weird shit, I didn't catch much of it besides "flamethrower" and " bubble beam" and some other stuff like that. Do you have any idea what he meant?"
She never watched much of Pokemon, so that's why she didn't understand what Dylon was asking. I however knew.
"Oh I see what he meant! Ok so in the Pokemon TV show there's these things called "pokemon moves" which are used by pokemon obviously, to do crazy shit like breathe fire and shoot out jets of water, just to name some basic examples."
"Huh. How do you think that could even work for us?"
"Not sure." I look around us, we've clearly walked quite a while without realizing it, as I can no longer see the road as it was when we first entered here. "With no one around us it's a good opportunity to try it if anything."
"That's true, why don't you go first? I don't know the first thing about this stuff."
I pause for a moment. What move should I try? Definitely not anything fire related, I could light this whole place up and not know how to put it out. Normal type would be my best bet, since eevee's are just that. Let's try Quick Attack.
"Ok I don't know if this is gonna work, so don't laugh if it doesn't ok?"
Jada giggles, "Ok Will."
I tense my body, and brace for whatever might happen. "Alright... Quick Attack!!!"
Nothing happens. Maybe I'm not doing it right. This time I relax my body. Let's try this with a meditative method. I focus on my inner energy, imagining myself moving at lightning fast speeds...
"Oh my gosh Will you're doing it!"
I open my eyes, and sure enough I'm several yards away from where I was just a few seconds ago. I close my eyes again, and I do the same thing again to move myself back.
"This is amazing! Jada, let me think of a fairy type move for you to try!"
She looks at me confused.
"Oh yeah, so you turned into a Sylveon right? Well that is a fairy type evolution of what I turned into, an Eevee. You won't be able to do many moves outside of normal type and fairy type moves. I was able to do a normal type move because Eevee's are normal type."
"Oh ok that makes sense." She takes this information in quite well, and I give her the name of a move for her to try.
"Ok, so the name of the move is Fairy Wind, I'm not sure how you actually do it, but when I did Quick Attack right there I just focused on my like inner energy and willed it to happen."
Her body relaxes, just like I did. At first there's nothing, but then I see a faint cloud of some kind of pink dust rush towards us, and it soon rushes past us.
"Woah, that certainly worked Jada." I look down where the cloud went, and my eyes are drawn to a worn down cross peeking above the treeline.
"Hey, you see that? Is there a church down there?"
"I think there was, but it closed down some time ago, before we were even born. Why?"
"It just... Looks familiar. Let's go take a closer look, what do you say?"
"Alright, I don't know what you're hoping to find there though. No one actually visits that place as far as I know."
As we walk up to it, There's a rock by the entrance, someone must've dumped it here because they didn't have anywhere better to put it. But it again it looks... Familiar.
My thoughts are interrupted by a loud crashing noise, and my heart sinks. Now I know why this place seems so familiar.
"I gotta go in there, NOW!"
"What are you talking about Will? There's no one in there, and you could get crushed by falling debris!"
I ignore her and rush inside. If that dream has any merit to it...
"Help me! Oh God, PLEASE, HELP ME!"
I knew it. I already know the path to her. I gotta do what happened in the dream, else who knows what'll happen.
"Don't worry, I'll get you out of here."
Now I know the energy that swirled around me. I was using a pokemon move. I figure I should focus on the energy and blood in my muscles, and decide to use Work Up, that'll buff my strength. It works, and just like the dream, I toss the beam like it's nothing.
"How... How did you do that?"
"It's a little hard to explain, let's focus on getting you out of here. Can you walk?"
I already know the answer, but I have to do what was in the dream.
"AH! The beam must've broken some bones."
"Alright, we can still make do."
Again I use Work Up, I'll need it to carry her through all the rubble. Without hesitation I move towards where I came from.
"What the hell Will! YOU COULD'VE DIED!"
For what feels like the second time I set the girl on the rock. Then I turn to Jada for what feels the second time.
"Well now, could've being the key word. As you can clearly see, I am very much still alive. Not only that but I saved the life of another person!"
Again that embarrassment. "But... How did you know she was even in there?"
"A true magician never reveals their secrets." I say smugly. The new girl speaks.
"Regardless of how he knew, I'm glad he did. I don't think anyone would've found me until... Until..." she goes quiet. I stop her before she can finish that sentence.
"Hey now, no need to dwell on the what if, you're alive and that's all that matters!"
The girl smiles at me, this time I know that was the right thing to say.
"You're right, and thank you again for saving me. What are your names?" She looks between me and Jada.
"Well, on paper my name is William, but everyone just calls me Will."
"And I'm Jada."
"Well then, nice to meet you Will, Jada! My name is Trixie!"
Now I know her name. And the future is also unknown to me from this point forward.
Jada speaks again. "What were you doing in there anyways? You were lucky we were here."
Trixie blushes. "Well after I transformed I needed a place to think, and I actually always came here when I needed to do just that. Until now it was my private safe haven, although I'm glad it wasn't private as I thought now."
I understand her too well, I wish I had a place like that. I certainly needed it for the past 6 months.
Trixie looks between me and Jada again. "So like, are you two a thing? Did my little accident ruin a moment?" she says jokingly. Both me and Jada blush extremely hard. I was the first one to recover from that question.
"Well, we were."
Trixie raises an eyebrow. "Were?"
"Yeah, still bit of a sensitive subject for me though so can we please change the subject? Like getting you some help with your leg?"
"Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to pry! How would we get me to a hospital? I don't see either of you with pockets for a phone to call an ambulance."
She was right, since we transformed we didn't have a need for clothes, it just felt natural without now.
"I got an idea, here."
I focus on the my own soul power, and will it to surround Trixie's leg in a makeshift cast. Helping Hand.
"Ok, wow! You gotta tell me how you do that!" She stands up, and the cast holds. She's a bit wobley, but that's to be expected.
"Haha, I will, but let's focus on one thing at a time alright?"
"Okayyyyyy." she says childishly. She's got a strong spirit, I like that. "Would you mind helping me some Will? In case I loose balance?"
I get the feeling she doesn't actually need help, but I comply with a smile. "Sure thing Trixie."
Jada let's out a quiet groan and rolls her eyes. She knows what's happening just as much as myself and Trixie. Luckily Trixie doesn't see this, else it would ruin the moment.
We make our way back, slowly but surely. A few times Trixie starts to fall over. Sometimes it seemed genuine, others she seemed to be faking; but I still caught her none the less, every time.
Eventually we make it to the main road, where I spot a police officer doing a routine patrol. Luckily he sees us, and he hurries over to us.
"Hey there, looks like you guys need some help." He hands us a pen and paper pad, the one they usually use for writing tickets. Clearly he's seen enough people transformed he's caught onto the easiest way for us to communicate, so I write on the pad
"Yes, we do need help. She's hurt her leg bad and needs to get to a hospital."
He looks at Trixie, seeing the cast I made. He looks back at me, and points to the cast. "Did you do that?" I nod. "You're certainly a clever one, we could use some help, why don't you stop by the station once you got your friend here taken care of?" he writes the address of the station on the pad, folds it up, and puts it in a small phanny pack for me to wear so I can carry it.
Soon we're in the cop car on the way to the hospital, I let Trixie ride up front with the officer. Jada whispers to me.
"Don't think I didn't notice her hitting on you, and you were completely ok with her faking those falls. Don't let her give you a hero complex Will."
I smile. "Whaaaat? I would neverrrrr."
Trixie calls out. "My ears are burning! You two talking about me?" she giggles.
"As a matter of fact yes. Jada here thinks you're gonna give me a hero complex."
Jada looks at me with annoyance in her eyes, with an even deeper sense of embarrassment
"Well to be fair Jada he really is my hero, he did save my life after all." Trixie winks at me, and I crumple up a little on the inside.
"Would you two shut up already? This is awkward enough for me as is."
"What, you hate to see your ex that you dumped by the way getting it on with another girl?" I say smugly.
Trixie let's out a dramatic "ooooh".
"THAT'S ENOUGH!!! Say another word and I swear I will jump out of this car!!!"
With a smirk on my face I respond. "There's two problems with that plan Jada, one, we're in the back of a police car, meaning we have to be let out, we can't get out on our own. Two, we're here at the hospital."
Jada's face burns more than it ever has, so much so it's visible through the fur. The officer saves her from any further embarrassment.
"Alright you three, we're here." He gestures to Trixie. "Are you ok if I carry you in? So you don't have to put any more pressure on your leg than you have to?"
She nods yes, and we make our way in. The hospital is a little busy, but nothing they can't handle. Several people around us are some that have been transformed, but there doesn't seem anything wrong with them other than that. Guess they're here thinking it's some kind of mutation? They're not entirely wrong, but doctors can't change our genetics with the technology we have available today. The nurse working the front desk greets us.
"Well hello there, looks like you three got into quite the pickle, huh?" she smiles, obviously she's trying to make us feel comfortable despite the obvious changes we've gone through. "That leg looks pretty bad, I'm going to go ahead and place you in urgent care so you can get it looked at right away." she types some on her computer, and prints out some papers. She also pulls out some blank pieces of paper so we can communicate. "Now then, why don't you write the information we need on this blank paper here and I can copy it onto these so it looks good? I'm sure you've had a hard time writing with your... changes, shall we say."
Trixie does her best to fill out the information they need, and admittedly she was having a hard time writing, just like the nurse thought. Understandable, given our situation what with no opposable thumbs. Soon we're in a room, waiting for a doctor. I never had to go to the hospital much as I was growing up, so I'm still nervous in them even when I'm not the patient. Trixie notices this.
"What's wrong? You weren't the slightest bit nervous when you were saving my life, and here we are completely safe in a hospital and you look as wound up as a jack in the box!"
"Well, to be honest this is like my fifth time being in a hospital, so I'm not used to everything here. I was a pretty healthy kid growing up. That and I don't like needles that much. Just the thought of a spindly hollow metal tube puncturing my skin and injecting dead virus' into me... Ew." I visibly shudder
Jada snickers. "Wow, you really are messed up if you're completely fine when in mortal danger but are nervous in a hospital when you're not even the patient."
Instinctively I glare at her, and I smack her in the back of my head with my new tail. This makes Trixie giggle.
"Ow."
"You're getting used to your new body pretty quick Will! Wish I was, just before you found me in the church I tripped on my own tail!"
We all laugh at this, and just at this moment the doctor comes in with a computer.
"Good to see we're not all doom and gloom in here! What seems to be the problem today?" He opens the computer to a document program, and moves it to us. Trixie does her best to type, and while she's slow she doesn't make any mistakes. I don't see what she types, but I don't have to guess. The doctor reads what Trixie typed. "Well now, you're quite the hero now aren't you young man?" He ruffles my hair, or at least would have been it if I was still human. I don't really like when people do that, but I smile anyways (Jada is rolling her eyes again). "In that case let's get you to an X-ray exam room. I'll be right back with a stretcher, with those short legs you got it'll be quite the walk."
He leaves the room and is back with the stretcher he promised about 7 minutes later. He moves it next to the padded table we were sitting on so we can get on. Jada has no problem, but I help Trixie since there's a bit of a gap. "Thanks Will."
Soon we're in the halls on our way. We pass by several doctors and patients, both of some were transformed. The doctors who changed seem to be taking their transformation well, and are using it to their advantage instead of letting it hinder them. Several of them are using various Pokemon moves that heal, others are using moves like Sleep Powder to help calm panicked patients. This was the good I was hoping would come of this. I'm glad I wasn't the only one to try to find the good in this.
"Taking in the scenery? It was a bit of a mess at first here with the transformation, but we wouldn't be good at our job if we couldn't adapt on the fly. We were lucky it happened at night here, have any of you three seen the news lately?"
I didn't think this happened on a global scale. I look to Jada and Trixie and they both shake their heads no. I hadn't either.
"Well then, you three should count yourselves lucky. In places on the other side of the globe, it happened in the middle of the day. Let's just say that things aren't pretty for them." The doctor adopts a somber look on his face, clearly that was a drop in the bucket to what was really happening. Frankly I don't want to know, it might kill me on the inside if I did.
What best conversation we could make with the doctor was cut short, as we arrived in the exam room. The machines were familiar to me, as I had broken some bones in the past. Soon the doctor pushes the stretcher behind the protector that the doctors use while they print out the X-ray, and carries Trixie over to the table that she'll be sitting on for taking said X-ray.
"This synthetic cast is quite amazing, I've never seen anything like it before! Unfortunately I'll have to take it off, it would most likely distort the picture we'll get. I'm gonna cut it off with these scissors here, ready?" I don't know where he got the scissors from, he must've had them in one of his coat pockets. Trixie nods. Slowly the doctor cuts off the temporary cast I made for Trixie, careful not to squeeze or cut her leg. Soon it's completely off, and he places her on the table to take the X-ray, and puts the protective lead pad on the rest of her body. It nearly covers her completely!
"Sorry about this pad, we don't have any others, and it's required we put this on you. Wouldn't want to risk permanently damage your organs now would we? Alright, let's see here... Looks like a minor fracture, but it'll bug you for a while. Let's get a proper cast for you."
He leaves the room and comes back with cast wrapping and a metal frame to help support her leg.
"Normally this cast and frame right here would be used for animals, but given your situation it makes sense. Hope you don't mind."
The doctor gives her a couple color choices for the cast wrapping (she chose red), then the doctor gets to work on putting it on. A couple times Trixie flinches, as the doctor has to make the cast relatively tight.
"Alright, all done. In case you've never gotten a cast before, be sure not to get it wet, and do your best to keep it clean. If you have to clean off, what I recommend is only taking showers, putting a grocery bag and tying it around the cast so it'll stay dry."
Trixie nods, letting the doctor know she's going to do her best to remember all that.
"In the meantime, why don't you stay the night? We can monitor your leg and make sure you heal properly." He gives her the laptop again so she can answer. She looks to us before she does so.
"What do you guys think? Should I stay?"
Jada answers first. "I'm a bit on the fence about it, but you should definitely contact your parents and let them know where you're at if you decide to stay."
Trixie looks to me. "What do you think Will?"
"It would be best if you stayed. Move around much more and you might hurt your leg more than it already has been. I also agree with Jada saying to contact your parents, in fact me and Jada should do the same for ours. They'll be wondering where we've been all day."
"Alright." She types her answer on the computer, then the doctor reads it.
"I was hoping you'd say that, I'll go figure out a way for you to contact all of your parents." He leaves the room, and a nurse comes in after.
"Alright kiddo, let's get you a room. You two are welcome to stay with her for a while, as it's still visiting hours."
She moves the stretcher for Trixie to get back on, and then takes us to a room for Trixie to stay in. There's nothing special about the room, as every room is the same. We pull up next to the bed in the room, and the doctor that did the X-Ray comes in.
"I managed to get ahold of your parents Trixie, they're glad you're ok and are coming up here to check on you! They also wanted to thank your friend here personally. As for you two I pulled records on your parents contact information and let them in on what's happened today."
Trixie turns to me. "Well now, you're gonna meet my parents and it hasn't even been a day! When you meet them though they will ask what exactly happened, and that magician's secret line isn't gonna fly with them."
This is somewhat concerning for me. "Well lying won't get me anywhere and if I tell the truth they'll likely think I'm insane!"
Jada and Trixie both look at me with a confused look and in perfect sync say "How come?"
"Well, occasionally I have these dreams right? And these dreams kinda... Let me see into the future."
Jada laughs hysterically, but Trixie seems to take me serious.
"I doubt they'll think you're insane, on the contrary I think they'll believe you 100%. I know I do."
Jada stops laughing. "Wait, you actually believe him? You sure you didn't hit your head too?"
Trixie looks a bit annoyed. "I know I didn't hit my head. Why don't we wait for my parents to get here and then they can explain this? They're better at explaining stuff than I am."
Seems fair enough, but why would they believe me? Sometimes I hardly believe it myself. "Ok, I'm gonna try and ask when we can expect them to get here." I look over the side of the bed we're on, and with my new body it's quite a ways down. I remember seeing Parkour videos on how to fall farther without getting hurt, surely they'll still apply? I'm a little nervous doing this, but I jump off. I keep my legs loose, according to the videos it'll lessen the impact. It certainly helped, but it was still a hard fall.
"grunt shit. That hurt some."
Trixie calls out from on the bed. "You good?"
"Yeah I'm fine! Heading out to find that doctor!"
It doesn't take long, as he was just a few feet down the hall. He's talking with a nurse about some of the other patients, so I wait for him to finish. When he is, I grab at his pant leg to get his attention. I hate doing it, but it's the best way TO do it.
"Hey there, it's our local hero kid! Your friend need something?" He whips out his pad again, clearly he's making it a habit. After I finish writing on it, he takes a look.
"Well that's a bit of a tough question, it's a good distance between here and where her parents were, but I wager it'll be some time tomorrow morning. I know it's a long wait but I'm sure they're doing the best they can."
I nod in thanks to the doctor, and make my way back to Trixie's room. When I get there, a nurse is in the room with a step stool. Jada is the first to greet me back.
"Hey dumbass, you hit the ground so loud a nurse came running to see what was wrong! She had a notepad so we were able to ask for this so we wouldn't risk getting hurt getting on and off."
"Come on Jada, he was just trying to help me out! Don't be so hard on him." As I get back on the bed with the new step stool she turns to me. "When did the doctor say my parents would get here?"
"He wasn't sure but he said it should be somewhere around tomorrow morning. Said it was a bit of a long drive, bad traffic, variety of things slowing them down."
This clearly upsets Trixie. "Oh. I've... Never slept without my parents the room over."
This surprises both me and Jada. She's the same age as us, maybe even a little bit older, but she's never slept anywhere but her house? I was the first to reply to this.
"You've... Never had a sleep over at a friends house? Ever?"
"Sadly no. To be frank I've never had any friends to do that with. Not for a lack of trying on my part mind you."
This time Jada asks a question. "Really? I figured with as nice as you've been to us you were friends with everyone you know!"
"Yeah well, apparently I'm TOO nice. Everyone I met in the past thought I was either sucking up to them or faking it."
This pisses me off, but I hide it and do my best to make Trixie feel better. "Well, I never thought for a second any of those! It's the world's fault honestly, people are so self centered and protective of themselves and their family that anyone that's nice for no reason they assume they're trying to get something out of it!"
This visibly invigorates Trixie. "You know what? You're right! I'm gonna be myself and if people don't like it, it's their problem! Screw what those self absorbed assholes think!" She slams her new paw into the bed, and while it was done for dramatic effect, the cushioning of the mattress steals her thunder.
There's a knock on the door, and a nurse walks in. "Hey you three, visiting hours are almost over! Time for you to get ready to go."
Jada starts her way down the step stool, but just as I'm about to follow behind her Trixie stops me.
"Wait, Will! I've never stayed anywhere other than my house, do you think you could stay with me? Please?"
This takes me by surprise. I knew we formed a connection right off the bat but I didn't realize it was this strong for her. Jada gets a sour look on her face. Clearly despite her words earlier she isn't completely trusting of Trixie yet.
"Well, I'll have to get a hold of my parents, and then there's the doctor we have to ask, but personally I have no problem with it!" I smile, ecstatic that she feels comfortable enough with me to ask me that.
We're quickly able to get an answer from the doctor, since there's a nurse already with us. Soon after I'm on the phone with my parents. Just before I placed the fanny pack with the address of the station on the nightstand, I had almost forgotten about it!
"Hello? Will? You there?"
Its my father. Makes sense since we're able to communicate verbally.
"Yes I'm here Dad. I was told you heard about my heroics today?" I smile smugly, even if he can't see it.
"Yes I did, and how could you be so stupid?! You could've died! We're in enough of a chaotic mess as is without arranging a funeral!"
"Don't worry Dad, Jada already got onto me for it. Actually the police officer that drove us here was kind enough to stay while we were getting checked in, and went ahead and took her home." I laugh, I wasn't surprised at his reaction, but I do wish he had been less bellitiling about it. "Either way, that's not why I'm calling. The girl I saved, her name is Trixie by the way, needs to stay the night but isn't comfortable doing so by herself, and asked me to stay. I've already gotten a green light from the doctor, I just need yours and Mom's permission."
There's mostly silence on the line, other than some tapping noise. He must be repeating all this to Mom.
"Your mother is somewhat concerned about you staying with a girl, but she said if she wanted it she's fine with it. I am too, after all she almost died. She's probably really shaken up, even if she's not showing it. It'll definitely help her since she isn't comfortable by herself."
"Thank you Dad! I promise I won't do anything stupid while I'm here!" This makes both of us laugh.
"You? Do something not stupid? Now that'll be the day!"
"Haha, alright Dad, I'll talk to you tomorrow ok? Maybe you can meet Trixie, I'll have to ask her."
"Alright then, see you later."
I hang up the phone and go lay next to her, and with the smile on my face I don't even have to say a word.
"They let you stay with me? Yay!" She moves her new paws up to clap, then realizing she can't because of such. "Oh. Well darn."
This makes both of us laugh. "Yeah, they said I can stay. Hows your leg feeling?"
"Still a bit sore, but feeling better by the minute! Especially with you here..." she nudges up beside me. She's got a look in her face I'm unfamiliar with, but it's making my blood rush, and I start tripping over my own words.
"Oh well uh, I'm glad to hear that." She's even closer to me, and I can feel the heat from her body. The feeling is intoxicating, and I can barely say a word now.
We sit in silence for a while, Trixie's body positioning constantly present in my mind, then Trixie falls asleep. My heart is still pounding, I doubt I'll fall asleep anytime soon. I know this feeling, I had almost forgotten what it felt like.
I'm falling for Trixie, hard and fast. It's obvious Trixie feels the same way about me. I hope her parents don't react too violently if they find us like this in the morning...
