The 6th Angel continues to drill its way into NERV HQ, calmly spinning as if the Angel itself is a top. Shinji hears a loud clang as he turns to see Unit-00 being lifted up with a large shield replacing its right arm.
"Now I will inform you two about your roles in Operation Yashima." Misato tells them through their comms. "Shinji, you'll be the gunner in Unit-01 while Rei will protect you."
"Shinji listen up." Ritsuko chimes in. "Because of the Earth's rotation, magnetic field and gravity, the Positron Rifle won't fire straight. So don't forget to take those factors into account. You must strike the core in a single shot."
"That's great,"Shinji said with sarcasm much to Ritsuko's annoyance. "But um, where's the Angel's core at?"
"The center most likely." Adam said. "Unless the core can move on its own, or the Angel is clever enough to hide it within its body so our only chance is when the Angel attacks which will leave the core exposed."
"Adam is correct. The Angel will be preoccupied with dealing with NERV's defenses leaving the core open during its attack phase." Ritsuko explained before the sounds of train wheels moving came from the side opening. From the opening, Unit-01 rises from the ground almost as if it's still asleep."We believed that's where the core is located."
"Your sniping position, as well as various factors that affect your trajectory, will be imputed by us." Misato gestures to the command truck in the far side parking lot. "All you have to do is follow the on-screen prompts, then fire when the center indicator meets. The computer will handle the rest. However, only one spot has been set up to supply all of this power."Unit-01 slowly continues up, stopping close to the end point of the train rails, stopping right in front of Unit-00 right side."For that reason, Unit-01 can't change its firing position."
"So retreating isn't possible, huh?" Shinji asked, irritated. His eyes narrowed by the oversight. 'This day just keeps getting better and better,' he thought. "So what if I miss and Angel returns fire? What then?"
"That's where Unit-00 comes in to defend you." Misato replies, gesturing to the yellow EVA. "Don't worry about it right now, just focus on destroying the target in one shot."
"And if we don't, which I'm sure it will, we'll just have to improvise." Adam said with a smile.
"You could try to sound a little positive." Misato said.
Adam gives Misato a look. "Oh yes because shoving all of the burden on Shinji is very positive. I mean a single shot? That's a piece of cake."
"Okay you know what-"
"Knock it off, both of you." Ritsuko tells them both. "If you have time for this childish squabble then do your job."
""Sorry."" The duo apologize.
Shinji lets out a chuckle at her guardian's and roommate's argument.
"I… I must protect Shinji?" Rei asked, in what sounds like… hesitation. Shinji raised an eyebrow, why would Rei show hesitation at such an easy job?
"Oh, by the way this message was left at the NERV Public Affairs Department." Misato pulls out a tape recorder with the NERV logo on the bottom. Shinji blinks in confusion before pulling the device to his ear.
"Hey Shinji. It's… uh… me, Suzahara." Shinji blinks at the familiar voice of Toji.
"Shinji, we're counting on you!" He chuckles at Kensuke's shout in the background. "By the way, it's Aida. Do your best out there!"
10 minutes later
All across Japan, lights began to go out with streets, houses and buildings fading into darkness. Revealing the multitude of stars in the sky. Everything is dark and deathly silent aside from the barely audible noise coming from the Angel's drill.
Shinji and Rei stand on a platform beside Unit-01 and Unit-00, with Rei sitting calmly on the opposite end by Unit-00. The tensions are high here, if they fail then it's over for everyone.
"Ayanami, why do you pilot the EVA?" Shinji asked softly, making the blue-haired albino look at him curiously before a look of uncertainty forms on her face.
"I pilot Unit-00… because of my bond." Rei hesitantly replies, making Shinji raise an eyebrow.
"A bond?" Shinji asked, confused. "With… Unit-00?"
"With everyone… or at least that's what I thought." Rei states, pulling her legs around her arms. "But I am not sure... that is the case anymore."
"?"
"Adam said… that I don't need the EVA to have a bond… that I can make bonds with others if I just talk to them." Rei looks up towards the city. "The idea… scares me."
"Ayanami…"
"That's why I won't let you die, Shinji." Rei's red eyes harden as she stands up. "I will protect you and Adam. It's time. Let's go." She turns and goes to her EVA.
"She's stronger than I thought." A familiar voice states.
Shinji turns to the sound of the voice and sees Adam standing behind him. "Yo." Adam waves.
"What are you doing here!?" Shinji asked.
"I came to check up on you." Adam walks closer and puts his hand on Shinji's shoulder. "I know you're nervous, but I want you to know that I got your back."
Shinji smiles and looks at the watch on Adam's wrist. It doesn't look like a normal watch and doesn't seem to tell the time, yet Adam wears it all the time. Was it a gift from someone?
Adam notices Shinji staring at his watch and smirks. "Are you interested?" Adam rolls up his sleeve to show the entire watch. "It's not a watch in the normal sense; more of a key really."
"A key?" Why would a watch be a key?
"Yep." Adam said. "Well, I should get going. I don't want Misato to yell in my ear about going on a walk." He walks away, "I'll see you later."
Shinji waves at Adam before turning to Rei as she enters the Entry Plug. "Good luck, Rei."
"Be aware that, as of now, it has just passed 12:00 PM." 10 minutes have passed since the clock struck midnight; the operation has begun. All lights across Tokyo-03 were off, except for the spotlights indicating the Angel's reflective body.
"Shinji," Misato calls out over Unit-01's communication link. "You chose to pilot the EVA, even knowing all of the stakes and tasks brought with it… I'm grateful for that. Thank you."
Shinji says nothing and merely smiles.
"Commence Operation Yashima!" Misato ordered, not before Adam snickered. "Got something to say, Adam?"
"Yeah, I just thought of a better name for the operation." Adam chuckles. "Operation Fuck you, Every Jewelry Store."
"Yeah… that can work." Misato snickers, before becoming serious again. Unit-01's Entry Plug screens flash to life as the operation begins. Operators and crewmen speak all across the comms, with Misato and her ground managing to understand the jumbled conversation.
"Initiate Stage Three power connect!"
"Roger, routing all power to Futagoyama transformer."
"All cooling systems running at full capacity!"
"No problems in the 3rd connection."
"Good, inform barricades 4 and 5 to proceed as planned."
Across the mountains, anti-air ground missiles launch from the hidden silos towards Tokyo-03, trying to rain hell on the living octahedron. The 6th Angel, sensing the danger, shifts and creates an energy beam that tears all air missiles apart in the blink of an eye. Another beam comes into vision and eviscerates the mountain range where the missiles were launched.
"No. 3 ground-to-ground systems just got vaporized!"
"Perfect, looks like we got its attention. Do not stop the attack no matter what!" artillery and missiles rush out to catch Ramiel's sight. They do, but are quickly thwarted by the Angel's A.T. Field only to transform again and fires another particle beam, destroying all obstructions.
"No. 2 Turret Battery just got hit."
"We just lost the 8th VLS group!"
"No. 4 ground-to-ground defense systems active, commencing attack!"
More batteries rained down on the Angel, diverting all unwanted attention from Unit-01 and 00. Shinji readied his fingers and tightened his grip on the controls, with Unit-00 crouching behind Unit-01's sniping position.
"No. 6 Battery just got blown away!"
"Roger No. 7 Turret Battery will now commence firing."
"Positron Rifle charging, currently at one terawatt!"
"Not now Mom! I'm busy!"
"Maintain condenser fans at 38000 RPM."
"Compression density approaching firing threshold."
"Shut-down overloaded circuit! Expedite reroute!"
"Power drop off at acceptable range."
"Circuit breakers are operational. Recovery in progress."
"No problems with the 4th connection."
"Disable the final safety device!"
"Roger. Unit-01, raise the firing hammer!"
"Understood!" Unit-01 cocks the sniper rifle, pulling the hammer sharply back before letting it go back. A large scope comes from behind Unit-01's shoulder pylon, closer and better than the further one on the Positron Rifle itself. Inside the Entry Plug, a metal frame comes down before Shinji's eyes, revealing it to be a lock-on sequence similar to when Unit-01 uses a Pallet Rifle in training.
"Adjusting for Earth rotation and gravity; plus 0.0009."
"Firing mechanism is automatically locking on."
"Scope adjustment complete!"
"The photons are accelerating, 0.2 to discharge… 0.1…"
"Open the fifth and final connection!"
"Reroute all energy to power discharge subsystems."
"Plugs 1-9, ready for power influx!"
"Proceeding with final calibration of the positron acceleration chamber. No casualties."
'This is it,' Shinji thought as he stared at the continuously shifting Angel in the distance. 'If all else fails, the Angel will kill everyone… I can't fail, not now! Ayanami says she'll protect me, but…' Shinji's eyes narrow, swiftly changing color for a moment. 'That doesn't mean I can't protect her either!'
"10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…!"
The computer locks on to the Angel's core.
"FIRE!" Shinji's eyes snap wide open and without wasting a single moment, pulls the trigger. Electricity sparks above and around Unit-01 and like a flash of lighting, the Positron Rifle fires.
A greenish beam of pure energy races through the mountain range, vaporizing everything in its path before connecting with the core. Ramiel's body froze, before it burst into a fan-like arrangement of variably-sized diamonds, with its core visible through the mass, followed by a high-pitched scream. Blood escapes from the opening now carved in, spraying across the mountains and Tokyo-03 as its body slowly tilts backwards.
In the mobile command center, everyone blankly stares as the Angel's body slowly falls.
"Did we hit it!?" Misato asked with bated breath.
Adam stares at the screen before his eyes widen. "Get Shinji and Rei out of there, NOW!"
The Angel bled through the injury, before its skin smoothed out revealing an intact core as it shifted back into its octahedron form.
"High energy spike detected from the Angel!"
"All hands brace for impact!" Misato yells.
Ramiel's body morphs into a massive five-pointed star, revealing its core as if taunting them to hit it once again before firing its most powerful particle beam. The beam completely vaporizes the mountain and hits the EVA's before they can have a chance to move.
Shinji and Rei scream as their EVA's are burned badly, destroying the shield and rifle as they are tossed on the now scorched land, with cables and machinery sent flying around them.
In the mobile command center, alert lights come to life as the people inside pull themselves back on their feet. Misato groans as she pulls herself up, glaring at the red screen. "What's… what's the status of the energy output?"
"…" Hyuga says nothing as Adam helps Ritsuko up.
"What's wrong?" Misato asked.
"The Positron Rifle… it's gone."
Misato's mind goes blank at the news. That's it. This was their only chance. Without the Positron Rifle, there was no way of defeating the Angel.
"Shinji… Shinji are you alright?" Misato asks through the comms.
Unit-01 Entry Plug
Shinji sobs, clutching his sides in pain. He could feel Unit-01's armor burning off as if it was his own skin that was being burned. He looks up to see the melted remains of the Positron Rifle… and the downed form of Unit-00 in front of him.
"AYANAMI!" Shinji called out from the comms, but there was no answer.
"High energy charge from the target again!"
"What!?"
Ramiel, still in its crystal form, fires another charged particle beam at the EVA. It was clear that the Angel is no longer holding back, as the beam burns through everything in its path before reaching Unit-01.
"SHINJI!"
However, just before the beam connects it is deflected by a dome of energy seemingly protecting the two EVAs.
"Well, looks like I have no other choice."
Everyone turns to the teenager. "Adam?"
"I was hoping not to use this, but I don't want my friends to die." Adam gets out of the truck with Misato quickly following him. She chases him out of the site and into the open road and that's when she sees something she wasn't expecting.
Adam raises his left arm and instantly the massive blue ship from a few months ago appears right above them. Misato's jaw hangs loosely at the sight before her before she clams it shut as she looks at Adam.
"Don't worry Misato. I will save Shinji." A cone of light comes down from the ship trapping Adam inside before he vanishes in front of her.
Within the ship, Adam appears and walks towards a control apparatus which he takes a seat in. "Let's do this." He takes the controls and pushes forwards which causes the entire ship to move as well.
Misato can only stare as the massive ship moves towards the Angel before she rushes back to the mobile command center where an anxious Ritsuko is waiting outside.
"Misato, what the hell is going on!?" Ritsuko asks.
"It's Adam," Misato wheezes out. "Adam is on that ship."
"What!?" Ritsuko looks at Misato in disbelief before slowly turning to the massive ship.
Shinji is trying to get Unit-01 to rise but for some reason his controls aren't responding.
"Come on, come on, you piece of junk…!" Shinji utters as the controls keep failing. Just then, he hears a familiar voice coming from the comms.
"I told you I'd have your back, didn't I?" Shinji looks up as a massive ship flies over him as it makes its way towards the Angel.
The 6th Angel fires another particle beam at the incoming ship only for the beam to be unable to break through the barrier.
"The ship just deflected the particle beam!" Maya said.
"Impossible!" Ritsuko looks through the energy readings and her eyes widen. "What is this?"
"What? What is it?"
Ritsuko slowly turns to Misato. "The ship is using some kind of distortion field, but that kind of energy shouldn't even exist."
"Power spike detected from the ship!"
The two women look at the screen with absolute shock.
The upper half of the ship begins to split and slowly moves to the back of the ship as the bottom twists into feet. As it does, the two engines underneath contract and are pulled upwards as the artillery guns spit and rise upwards revealing them to be shoulder pads as they attach to the torso. The engines connect to the artillery shoulders and at the bottom thrusters swift and change into two five-fingered hands. A compartment opens at the top revealing the head. The head has a simple design: the helmet has two antennas on both sides and wears a faceplate where its mouth it's supposed to be.
Its eyes light up into a light green as it lands and stands firm in the city.
Ramiel fires particle beam after particle beam at the mechanical behemoth but they are all ineffective.
Several compartments on the mech's body open revealing different kinds of weapons, all of them seemed futuristic in appearance. They all open fire, sending a barrage at the 6th Angel forcing it to raise its A.T. Field.
"The target's A.T. Field is breaking down. It can't handle the onslaught of attacks!" Maya states.
"Incredible..." Misato said.
The Angel's A.T. Field breaks, leaving it completely vulnerable to the barrage. It lets out a cry of pain as its body is endlessly bombarded with no way to defend itself. The 6th Angel lets deafening cry as it begins to fall to the ground, defeated.
The robot stops its barrage and raises its arms. The hands begin to glow sending a pulse that causes everything around it to be drawn into itself, the 6th Angel is no exception. As the Angel comes closer, the mech grabs its body. Everything grows quiet as the mech emits a whirling noise before the 6th Angel's body disintegrates completely, not even leaving a rain of blood like they always do.
"The target... has gone silent." Maya states.
"What the hell was that!?" Misato asked Ritsuko.
"I don't know..." Ritsuko said, unable to come up with an answer.
Shinji manages to get Unit-01 working again as it stumbles towards Unit-00 and rips the upper plate off before removing the Entry Plug.
"Ayanami!" Shinji ejects the plug and dashes towards the plug, grabbing the emergency hatch. He grunts in pain at the superheated metal as he forces it to turn, metal groaning as the hatch flies open. "REI!" Shinji struck his head and arms into the dark plug, looking at the motionless body of the First Child clutching the controls. "No…"
Rei's body stirs, before her head gracefully turns to Shinji. "... I… raki?" She asks softly, making Shinji smile with tears of joy.
"You're alive," he sighs in relief, before pulling Rei forward into a small hug. "Thank god."
Rei is caught off guard by this. She's never been the sort for physical contact, not even with Commander Ikari. Nonetheless, she returns the hug. "I… I'm sorry, I do not know how to express my emotions."
Shinji simply pulls her back and gives her a warm smile. "You can just smile, Rei…" Shinji's voice made Rei stare for what felt like minutes to her, before she complied.
Rei smiles; not a forced or uncomfortable smile. No…
A genuine, heartwarming smile.
Shinji returns the smile before pulling her out of the Entry Plug.
"Way to go, Shinji."
The two pilots look up to see the giant blue mech that destroyed the Angel all while speaking in a familiar voice. "You guys looked so cute together that I just didn't want to interrupt your little moment."
Shinji blushes red while Rei merely tilts her head. "Adam?"
"That's my name." Adam replies. "Now I know you have questions so let me answer what's on everyone's minds."
A beam of light comes down from the mech and Adam appears in front of them. "My name is Adam, I'm a time traveler. And this," He gestures at the titan. "Is my time machine: The Weltall."

"This cannot be allowed to continue." Gendo opens a drawer in his desk and takes out a phone.
Fuyutsuki looks at the massive robot. 'This can change everything...'
The Moon
High above Earth, across the white surface of the Moon lies a massive line of black coffins, most of which are open and empty. One of the coffins lets out a hiss noise as the lit slowly moves, revealing a 14-year-old boy white haired boy wearing a plug suit. The boy's eyes open revealing them to be a crimson red as rises up from the coffin and smiles. "Interesting... it seems that there is an outside force at play." He looks up at the red Earth and smiles. "I look forward to seeing you again, Shinji Ikari."

That's right, I am back to this fic. You all thought I'd just abandon it, well no. I never leave my work unfinished, otherwise it'll drive me crazy. So with this, the first part of the rebuild is over. I promise the next part will be more interesting, so stay tuned.
