-Dark-

On the Isle when things like this were called by Maleficent it was usually big and unpleasant, but this-

This was boring.

Just fancy boring.

Everyone was silent as Fairy Godmother led Ben through a vow to the people of Auradon.

He swore to take his duty to learn about the Kingdoms and their perspectives, cultures, and traditions seriously.

He swore to study the laws that governed the lands.

He swore to uphold-

Blah, blah, blah.

He didn't need to hear this. He already trusted Ben to do the right thing, even when the right thing was hard and unpopular.

He wouldn't be here with his pack if Ben was afraid of hard work or being judged.

He wouldn't know that others would eventually join them.

So no, he didn't need to hear Ben promise to uphold the ideals of the United Kingdoms, especially when he already knew Ben planned to go over those ideals with a microscope or something.

Stupid.

This whole thing was like a big display or something equally stupid.

If the others weren't here, he would have already been looking for a way to slip out.

Would have said pineapple thirty minutes ago.

But they were here.

And Lonnie was here.

And at least it was for Ben.

Anyone else though-

No fucking way.

At least David and Hiro were trying to lighten things up, even if it did keep Nani glaring.

A collective gasp pulls his attention back to Ben in time to see the king take the glass dome off the wand.

Oh. They actually used it.

He'd really thought it was just a prop or something, like a reminder of the power behind the throne.

His eyes narrow.

Now that was a thought. The throne belonged to Adam and Belle, and one day Ben, but it was Fairy Godmother's wand that was used to seal the vow?

Did that mean that without Fairy Godmother, the whole united thing would fall apart?

He shakes his head.

That was… Way above his understanding.

Gang dynamics, sure, he understood that.

But Kingdoms were way more complicated than gangs trying to work together.

Right?

He snorts. They totally had to be.

"I present Prince Benjamin Florian Labette, Heir apparent to the throne of these the United Kingdoms of Auradon."

Everyone erupts into clapping and cheers.

Finally.

Clapping meant this was done, right?

He smiles and looks up at hands drumming against his shoulder.

"Kai, that was long," David chuckles before his hands squeeze, "but we made it, eh brah."

"No kidding." He nods before he looks back to the front, searching for purple amongst the sea of blue and gold.

He grimaces, absently clutching at his stomach at a sudden sharp pain.

Fuck, something was wrong.

Something was wrong!

He grabs Carlos's arm and pulls him behind him before he steps in front of Evie and Lonnie.

Mal looked way too worried for it to just be nerves.

Every inch of his second-in-command skin was tingling.

What the fuck was Mal looking at in disbelief?

In horror.

It was so hard to see with everyone moving around, cheering and clapping and-

His eyes widen when he sees Jane snatch the wand from her mother's hand.

What.

The.

Fuck?

What was happening?

His heart thumps unevenly as he watches Jane struggle with the sparking wand, tossed this way and that as she gripped it with both hands.

His eyes narrow as her face shifts in pain.

Was, was she crying?

Did the wand hurt to use-

He shakes his head.

So not the fucking issue right now.

"Get down!" He shouts, shoving Carlos, Evie, and Lonnie to the ground before he hears several other voices who apparently had the same thought.

Jane couldn't control the wand. She could barely hold onto it.

Mal didn't fall to the ground though. In fact, Ben was having a hard time keeping her behind him.

But before he can do more than take a step, he feels hands on his arms-

And then the cold stone floor against his face.

"Get down means you too, lolo." David grimaces as he kneels over him.

"But-"

"But?" David leans in closer as arcs of light jump overhead, "But?! Brah, magic!"

"And Mal's up there!" He snaps as he struggles, knocking David off balance before he pushes himself up onto his knees.

"Dude! Ya can't muscle magic. She's got Janice. She'll be fine." Hiro chides as he tackles him, his weight and David's knocking him back to the floor.

"You don't know Mal." He growls before he struggles to his knees again, just in time to see a bolt of lightning shatter the ceiling, making the whole building shake.

"SHIT!" Hiro rolls to cover Carlos and Evie from the glass and rubble raining down.

"Fuck! Mal!" He screams as Lonnie crawls away from Nani to his side

"Jay," David breathes out as if in pain, "Jay, please-"

"I got you." Lonnie mouths silently before she 'loses her balance' against David.

"Lonnie, no-"

But it was enough to get David to let him go.

He jumps to his feet in time to see one of his worst nightmares.

One he never even dared to voice for fear of it coming true.

Mal.

Mal somehow manages to pull the wand away from Jane.

His heart thuds painfully against his ribs.

He forgets everything else.

Everything.

All he can see is Mal frowning at the wand in her hands.

It would be so easy, wouldn't it?

Just take it back to the Isle. Back to her mother.

Pretend none of this ever happened?

Pretend it had all been a long game.

Pretend none of the people they met mattered.

Pretend.

Because that's exactly what it would be.

Pretend.

Could she do that?

Would she make that choice for them?

Force them to abandon everything they were only starting to accept?

David. Nani.

Lonnie.

Their new families.

New friends.

His heart drops as Mal's eyes flash to neon green and stay vibrant.

Her eyes had always been known to flash.

To flare from her normal green to the glowing neon green.

They even flickered neon any time her mother challenged her, or she challenged her mother.

But there was no hint of a flicker now.

Just solid, glowing, neon green eyes.

His fists clench by his sides when he sees vibrant purple sparks fighting blue and white sparks around Mal.

He could feel the energy crackle from here.

The sparks were violent, but Mal, aside from her eyes-

Mal was perfectly still.

Perfectly calm.

She was just staring at the wand.

In the middle of the chaos, with people screaming in fear and crying out in pain, Mal seemed wholly focused on the wand in her hand.

She didn't look angry.

It didn't look like she was having a power high.

She almost looked-

Sad.

Confused.

And that scared him more than anything else.

So.

Not a long chapter, but hopefully a poignant one.

Jay ever the big brother.

Lonnie 'saving him'.

The fear pounding in Jay's chest.

Jane's tears.

Mal's confusion.

Any guesses to the changes we made?

She didn't make the choice in the movie… But will she make the same choice?

Anyone else scared?

Did we do a good job of making your heart pound?

Wasn't it sweet that everyone jumped to protect E and C?

Sorry don't have a fave line for this one. Just concern.

With much love and appreciation,

-Twisted
