"I can't even remember her face…"
She was taken aback by his words.
The expression on his face, the way his eyes are locked into the horizon. She wasn't sure anymore she thought to herself. Unsure of what was more heartbreaking: Being broken and feeling unloved by your own mother, or not even remembering her face. Not knowing how her voice sounded anymore. For she still knew exactly of how her own mother sounded and looked like. It made her heart hurt even more these days. Even if wasn't easy to admit, but she missed her...
But hearing Sokka utter those words, knowing his mother was murdered when he and his sister where nothing but two innocent children needing their mother's warmth... well, it felt like breaking her heart into pieces.
"I..." she started with tears in her eyes. Sokka turned his head to look at her and smiled warmly, sadly. She closed her eyes to keep her tears inside and turned her head away from him.
"This is my biggest wound Azula, so far" he said.
"You know, when my father was gone, I clinged harder to my sister. I never felt like wanting to protect anyone and feeling the presence of anyone more than my sister. So far"
Every time he said so far, he looked with passion in his eyes to her and his lips curved into an earnest smile. Although they were talking about their wounds.
She couldn't tear her eyes away from his when he talked. When he looked at her like this.
"I'm sorry for all those things Sokka" she told him.
"I appreciate that, but I didn't tell you this to make you feel bad my love"
"I always believed that my mother never loved me, but... but I somehow think maybe she did? Maybe today would be different, we would have a different relationship" she said
Sokka put his hand on hers.
"My father's approval of my talents were important for me but deep down it was my mother's I craved you know? I wanted her to show me her love, her support. But she never treated me the way she treated my brother" she continued.
"Sometimes we think so. But maybe it isn't like that?" Sokka said "I never knew your mother, I wish and hope she loved you, but couldn't show it. If we ever find her, which we will, because I will do everything you really want, we can find it out"
Azula looked at him and smiled warmly now.
She knew that at the end of the day, her relationship with her mother and her vanishment were her deepest wounds.
"When my brother came home I was kinda happy. But that was it at first. I thought it's nice to be back together. I believed we could be a family and spend good times with our friends. Fight side by side from now on. And when he left again, this time with his free will to join Aang, I felt betrayed. I felt sad. When everything was said and done the only person I needed was my mother" she said her voice cracking a little.
He pulled her into a hug, both crying. He forgot his own wounds making his forever life goal to take care of hers. To make her smile and protect her with everything he had.
Their moods shifted after a while. Their mischievous selves slowly came out.
"I love you Azula" he said, eyes gleaming earnestly "You are my true love my only love."
"Only?" she asked.
"Of course!" he said without a hitch "What's with that look?"
"Well," her face grew more serious "I've heard some things."
Sokka had no idea about what she was talking.
"Northern water tribe and a 'Moon Princess'?" she replied.
He blinked and understood what she meant after a while.
"Truly Azula, that was when I was fifteen. a fool who had a brief crush" he said.
"Nothing more?" Azula asked curiously.
"Nothing more, nothing serious now that I look back" he said earnestly "She was a good person a faithful Princess to her nation. I had to protect her and because of my crush I was excited a bit. But not only that: I felt like a true warrior after a long time. The chief of the huge tribe entrusted me his most important possession, his daughter. And I failed to complete that mission. I was sad for a long time because for one, she was kinda dead, she sacrificed herself and became the moon spirit. And for the other, the bigger part: I failed I wasn't able to finish the task given to me."
"You are a true warrior Sokka. You protect your sister since years your father is proud of you." Azula told him smiling earnestly.
He smiled warmly at her.
"So, that's it?" she asked again.
Sokka sighed a bit uncomfortable.
"Yeah I had a kiss with her, but it was nothing. I can't even remember exactly. If I could, I would turn back time and take it back."
"Because Azula you are the woman I truly, absolutely love. I fell in love with you. The most incredible and beautiful woman. I hadn't had anything with her or anyone, only that kiss end that crush. I'm happy it was just that. If I would have known you back then I would have fallen in love with you much earlier immediately. I know what love is with you and only you!"
Azula already knew that, but she still asked.
"Well, if that's all it's good" she said smiling now.
Sokka looked at her amazed by her beauty. Amazed by her everything as always. He loved everything about her.
There was a short silence between them, but suddenly Sokka grew a bit tense.
"I've also heard some things" he huffed.
"Oh, you did?" she replied smirking "What did you hear warrior boy?"
"Something with ember island and you liking a guy?" he said scratching the back of his neck.
"Yes, you've heard right" she answered, looking at him with a smile on her face „I had a crush on this boy named Chan."
Sokka just looked at her listening intently, saying nothing.
"Granted he was incredibly good looking. He had strong arms and you know I like strong arms" she said a bit teasingly.
Sokka's left eye ticked at that.
"I was curious of how boys would treat me when they don't know I am the Fire Nation Princess. So I wanted to find it out and impress them as just Azula. Chan invited us to his party and I wanted to spend time with him. We went to the balcony, he made some weird jokes. And then we kissed."
Sokka felt the pang of jealous rising within his chest and didn't know what to say.
She knew exactly how he felt. He was the cutest when he got jealous.
"He was a bit scared of me I think" she said now.
Sokka huffed at that "He is a real fool then."
"Well, that's it. It was also just a short crush and a kiss. But truth is, I felt sad" she said.
He forgot his jealousy now that she used the word sad.
"But right now, it doesn't matter anymore. I love you and I love your arm. You have stronger arms" Azula said teasingly, snickering.
Sokka growled a bit at her comment.
"I'm glad that nothing more happened between you and this dumb guy, but honestly he's a true fool that he missed a chance with the world's most incredible woman!"
"I am happy with you Sokka" she said.
"I am happy with you Azula! I'm the happiest with you!" he replied loudly.
She laughed at that. He always jumped at every opportunity to praise her and tell her how much he loved her.
"I love your arms, your hair, your kisses" she said.
"I love everything about you! Your kisses, your eyes, your lips, just everything! Your body, yeah I love all parts of your body!" he said excitedly, without a breathing break.
They kissed passionately. A happy couple with true and real love. Nothing had an importance, the past was long forgotten, because they were both each other's true love, forever love. They experienced deep emotions and happiness, they never knew before.
At the end of the day their biggest wounds were because of their families. Even if for completely different reasons, for each of their families were indeed completely different from another. Both had a different life and ways of getting their wounds from their families. Yet they had so much in common still.
The two of them became each other's family now. They would cling to it and make their own little family. With that deep love and passion, happiness would be always with them.
Sokka broke the kiss to look at into her eyes.
"Do you know what felt like my heart is being ripped out?" he asked Azula.
"What?" she asked curious.
"The possibility of never seeing you again. When we had to part ways for a while, I felt lifeless. I was scared that you wouldn't stay in my life. Nothing broke me more, scared me more than the thought of never being able to see you again" he said stroking her hair.
Azula, with tearful eyes, hugged him tighter and they started kissing anew.
