He sat perched in his corner, his eyes lit
up by the flickering of the night's fire. His eyes barely moved,
made no sign that he was there, keeping his guard. He had
been doing this for several nights now, and no one seemed to
notice.
His mother once spoke of the music of the
night, the soft lull of the simplest sounds, nature's soothing
lullaby. But now the music of the night held only the
possibility of an attack.
He was keeping watch, for he knew that
soon an enemy would find him, find his family, well the closest thing
to family he had. He had to protect them, had to show that
he wasn't weak.
The sound of a twig snapping nearby made his ear
twitch, but he held his breath, listening carefully. Another
snap, the sharp twang of a trap closing and the air erupted with a
howl of anger.
"SHIPPOU!"
Now that was music to his ears.
