Kendra didn't know what to think about her situation. It was like from one of those old One Direction fanfics Alyssa liked to read.
One day she was helping negotiate a new deal with the fairies in Fablehaven, and the next her Grandparents were telling her that the Dragons had taken over the preserves and the Fairy Kingdom was in the hands of some random unicorn named Ronodin.
It was like they hadn't just saved the world a few months ago.
Though apparently the Dragons rebelled because Agad went back on his deal with them and they were enslaved on another preserve.
Kendra figured that was a valid reason to go crazy and murder a bunch of people, but for some reason her grandparents disagreed.
Weird.
But in good news, the magic dragon skull stolen from the First Dragons burial site and enchanted to keep magical creatures from the mortal world was still hidden, so the dragons couldn't attack any humans.
"And now the big news-"
"The what?" Kendra asked. "The dragon preserves falling and the Fairy Kingdom getting a new ruler wasn't the big news?"
"Well… you see… we kinda…" her grandfather studied the wall above her.
"We need to give you to Ronodin because otherwise he's threatening to call all the fairies back to the fairy realm."
Kendra blinked.
"What?"
"Well… he says you're the human handmaiden, and haven't been doing your duties, so therefore… he needs you with him."
"What."
Her grandfather coughed, "So we've agreed to send you to him in exchange for protection and aid in caring for the preserve."
"What."

Kendra stepped off the boat onto the island of the Fairy Shrine, her grandfather giving her one last wave before riding off.
What even was her life?
She reluctantly walked to the center of the island, coming to a stop at the little fairy statue there.
She idly wondered why it was a fairy when the Fairy Queen was a unicorn, seemed like false advertising.
The statue started glowing and with a surge of—bubbles, soft grass, sweet apples, shining light—she stood in a garden.
Before her was the most beautiful man she'd ever seen.
He looked about two years older than her, at most, with dark hair and eyes like pools of midnight. There was a small scar over his eyebrow, and his smile gleamed.
"You must be Kendra! It's a delight to meet my handmaiden. Very bright though, turn that down a little?"
Kendra blinked, "Uh… I don't know how to."
"Of course you don't, my apologies. I shouldn't have expected my idiotic aunt or her obnoxious children to teach you anything about the powers they gave you, that would be unreasonable."
Kendra nodded, "Yeah, they said they couldn't teach me after all. Why would you think they would?"
Ronodin (she assumed) blinked slowly.
"Since when couldn't they teach you? Your powers are just like that of a true fairy, or they should be. All they need is to ask a true fairy to teach you."
"Wait really?"
"Well yes, that is what being a handmaiden is… well never mind, teaching you will come later. For now let's get you moved in!"
"Why am I being moved in?" She asked, following him.
"Because you're my handmaiden, obviously you should be by my side."
"Makes sense," Kendra said, not understanding at all. "What will I be doing?"
"Oh, only the most important of work. Don't worry, it's a great honor."

Kendra dropped her head on her desk with a groan.
So. Much. Paperwork.
A pile was dropped in front of her. "Here you are! Some more requests!"
Kendra looked up at the gorgeous face of her tormenter.
"Why."
"Well, you wouldn't have all this paperwork if my aunt hadn't kept you from your responsibilities. Imagine having to do this all with another year of back log."
She glared.
"Oh, don't look so upset, look at my desk. I have even more work than you!"
He did, Kendra knew he did, but he also was very efficient at it and despite having to teach her half the things she was doing he was still working through his piles faster than she hers.
He pat her head, "You'll get there. How about this, if you finish those piles of paperwork, we'll practice making wings!"
Kendra did like it when he had someone fly her around, being able to fly herself would be great…
"Fine," she grumbled, picking up the brush once more.

"Kendra!" Bracken cried, his voice filled with relief. "We're here to rescue you!"
Kendra blinked, holding a pile of paperwork Ronodin needed to sign in her arms.
"What?"
"From Ronodin!"
"Why?"
Bracken blinked, "Because he's imprisoned you?"
"I'm Fairykind," Kendra said.
"Well yes-"
"I'm the human handmaiden?"
"Yeah-"
"And he's the Fairy King."
"Yes-"
"So I'm supposed to be helping him."
Bracken stared for a moment, "But he's evil!"
Kendra would agree with that, the amount of glee he had at her suffering with paperwork was definitely evil. On the other hand, his was very pretty when he was grinning at her with mischief filled eyes.
"It's okay," Kendra assured Bracken. "He's pretty when he's being evil."
A laugh broke out behind her.
"Why thank you," Ronodin teased. "I'll be sure to be evil more often."
His arm draped over her shoulder as he grinned at Bracken. "Breaking into my home, tut tut, that's illegal."
"It's my home!"
"Not anymore!"
"Ronodin-"
"Why do you even think he's evil?" Kendra wondered, turning back to Bracken who just didn't have the bad boy look Ronodin did. "he just likes making me suffer with paperwork."
She suddenly remembered the papers in her arms.
"You need to sign these," she said, dropping them into Ronodin's arms. He staggered.
"All of these?"
"All of them. Don't forget to initial."
"He's dark!" Bracken insisted.
"So's my brother?" Kendra said with a weird look. "Anyways, we have paperwork to finish."
"Ta ta!" Ronodin cooed, casually calling for the guards to capture Bracken (she thought they were on time thirty-four, though the first time she'd seen Bracken during his escapes).
OO OO OO OO
OMAKE: Ronodin lording his "purchase" over Kendra
Ronodin: So I bought you, right?
Kendra: technically it's an offer of a hostage to prevent further conflict
Ronodin: Hmm… that's close enough to indentured servitude right?
Kendra: didn't you say you wanted people to be free?
Ronodin: well yeah, but you're clever and also Bracken likes you… making you suffer is fun
Kendra: consider, I'm also an innocent child who you should take under your wing and teach instead of trying to torment
Ronodin: oh that's a great idea! I'll do both!
Kendra: oh no
OMAKE: Bracken was not expecting Ronodin to be a decent ruler
Bracken: he's hurting the kingdom!
Kendra: Actually sickness has declined by 15%, the non-fairies and unicorns have more rights than before, and he's added several holidays back to the calendar
Bracken: he's going to make them dark!
Kendra: he only makes the ones dark that want to be, and he's found a way to reverse it if they decide they don't like it. So it's really him giving them options they didn't get before.
Bracken: but-
Kendra: have you actually looked at what he's been doing while in charge?
OMAKE: Kendra knows Ronodin is the Dark Unicorn when they meet
Kendra: You're the one Bracken was chasing!
Ronodin: oh, haha, yeah he tries to hunt me down every now and then
Kendra: but you're evil!
Ronodin: who said that?
Kendra: Bracken said you were a dark unicorn and your horns an abomination
Ronodin: wow, that's not very nice of him. I mean, isn't your brother dark? Is he an abomination?
Kendra: of course not! Wait-
Ronodin: think on it

Thanks for reading! Don't forget to leave a review, they feed my soul.
What did you think of Kendra's time with Ronodin? Think Bracken has a chance of escaping?
