Whumptober Day 25

Hide & Seek

Prompts: escape/flight/hiding

Why, yes, I've watched the Hawkeye trailers on a loop; why do you ask? After all the dark ones I've written, I thought I'd have a little fun with this chapter. I'm sure you'll recognize a few of the scenes. There's also a couple of Renner references - technically three. Virtual cookies to whoever guesses all 3 (not counting the ones from the Hawkeye trailers).

"Freaking tracksuit assholes," Clint muttered to himself, surrounded by said assholes. He'd just returned from an overseas mission that had him propped on the roof of a building for three days having Nat's back. After debriefing at the tower, all Clint wanted was to get back to Bed-Stuy, where Mikayla was staying. They were newly married and wanted to spend at least the first few months of their married life away from their teammates, hoping to bring a sense of normalcy to their lives. Once he gave his report, which consisted of describing how he laid on his stomach and watched Natasha work her magic to get the information from the target, telling Fury he never even had to use any of his weapons. Saying goodbye to Nat and reminding her that, yes, he and Mikayla would be at Avengers movie night on Thursday, he hopped on his cycle and sped across town to his apartment building. Stepping off his bike, he heard a noise, turned around, and discovered he was surrounded by a group of guys all dressed in matching black jumpsuits.

"Told ya we'd be back, bro. Came to get what's ours."

"Guys, seriously," Clint said, rolling his eyes. "I bought the building fair and square."

"Wasn't yours to buy," one of the men growled. "Ivan's waiting for ya, bro." The group moved closer, surrounding Clint, not giving him enough room to pull out an arrow. Clint looked around, counted 14 guys. He'd beaten worse odds. Crouching down, he prepared to begin fighting when he heard a familiar whoosh. "What the hell, bro?" Someone said as a cloud of smoke appeared.

'Hot damn,' Clint said to himself, 'she found the trick arrows.'

"Sharky!" Using the smoke to his advantage, he moved away from the group. Looking up, he saw Mikayla leaping off the balcony and falling toward the ground. He tossed his bow and moved to stand underneath her, perfectly catching her. She wrapped her arms around him, kissing him. "Welcome home. Now, let's get out of here before they wake up. Charger's ready to go, spare weapons in the back seat." Reluctantly, Clint released Mikayla, and she dragged him to the parking garage. "No arguments. I'm driving." Before Clint could argue, he heard tires squealing and saw more people after him. "Get in." Mikayla had already slid behind the steering wheel, so she reached over and opened the passenger side door." Clint jumped in, tossing his bow in the back seat, switching it out for a smaller bow Mikayla had packed. Without warning, Mikayla gunned the engine and sped out of the parking garage, almost turning into the street on two wheels.

"Hey, be careful with my baby," Clint muttered, grabbing arrows and dragging them to the front seat.

"Nice to know your priorities." Mikayla saw the van behind them speeding up, so she started swerving through the traffic.

"I've known her longer." Clint leaned out of the window, releasing an arrow, cheering as the tires on the van exploded, causing the vehicle to come to a top. "Damn, I love trick arrows."

"Thought you'd enjoy that one," Mikayla said, looking through the rearview mirror. Not seeing anyone chasing them, she slowed down but was still vigilant.

Clint slid back into the vehicle. "Got a plan, Barton?"

Mikayla smirked. "Doesn't a Barton always have a plan?"

"You're learning, my young padawan." Clint reached over and squeezed her knee.

"There'll be time for that later, Hawkeye," Mikayla said but didn't remove his hand. She soon pulled into another parking garage. "Check the other bag."

Clint twisted and pulled the other bag into his lap. Unzipping the gym bag, he pulled out sunglasses and ballcaps. "Oh, good. You've discovered the Avengers undercover costume."

"Hey, if it's good enough for Cap and Nat, it'll be good enough for us." Mikayla parked and turned toward him. "Those idiots have been hanging around while you've been away, so I thought we might need some help. I know you don't like the idea, but I called on Tony. He's upgrading security and has his attorneys making sure the contract for the building is iron-clad." She lifted her hand. "I know you bought it years ago, but I want to make sure the other residents and we get to live there in peace. The Stark Coalition is paying for the other tenants to stay somewhere else while the renovations are happening, which should last through the weekend."

Clint nodded. "You've been busy."

Mikayla bit her lip. "I hope you don't think I'm overstepping my bounds. I know you love your tenants. That's why I want to make sure the building can still be a place of refuge for us. I threatened Tony to mess with his computer systems if he did anything other than update the security and work on the contract."

"Well," Clint leaned in, "you can be very persuasive."

After a brief make-out session in the car, the couple donned their ballcaps and sunglasses, then walked into the small boutique hotel. "Welcome to The Elemental," the well-dressed man behind the desk greeted them.

"Thank you, sir," Mikayla answered in a soft Southern drawl. "We have a reservation for two, James and June Monroe."

The clerk punched some information into the computer. "Yes, here we are. You're in room 1124, one of our suites." Mikayla pulled her wallet from her purse, handing the clerk a credit card and ID. After completing the transaction, the clerk gave her two room card keys. "There's a breakfast spread each morning until ten and a business room off to the side."

"Thank you, Brian."

"Enjoy your stay."

"Oh, we will." Mikayla linked her arm with Clint's, then took the elevator up to their room. Once in the elevator, Mikayla turned to Clint. "Don't worry. I've already checked it out. We're in a corner suite. One way in, one way out, windows on all sides, also has a balcony. The reservation's for a week."

Clint shook his head. "You never cease to amaze me, Mikayla Barton."

"Don't plan to stop, Clint Barton." The elevator doors opened, and the couple walked to their suite.

Clint unlocked the door with the room key, and then they stepped inside. Once Mikayla shut the door, Clint pushed her against the door, fervently kissing her, then he pulled away and looked at her with heavy-lidded eyes, full of lust and passion. "I love it when a plan comes together."
