The deep slice on her leg burned fiercely. Caitlyn didn't even flinch as more scalding water poured over the bleeding open wound. It was a fitting physical representation for the ache in her chest.
Oil and water. She compared us to oil and water.
She gripped the unyielding marble that lined the shower. Her knuckles turned white as she fought back the sob caught in her throat. An irrational part of her kept thinking that if she just stayed here forever no one would be able to see the hot tears that threatened to spill over. She would stay under the blistering spray until she was cleansed of the emptiness she felt inside.
Oil and water. How could she say that? After all we've been through. I saved her life! And then she just tosses me aside… for what? To be tough on me? To save me?
"Forget about me," Vi had said as she turned her back on Caitlyn and walked off in the rain.
If only it was that simple. If only she could turn off these feelings with a flick of a switch. Or load them into a target and blast them away with a single shot. They had only known each other for a few days. It shouldn't even be like this. She shouldn't be feeling everything this deeply with someone she barely even knew. She and Jayce had known each other since childhood and they never even came close to… not anything like what she wanted with…
Caitlyn closed her eyes.
Fuck.
She reached out and turned the water off.
Vi may have left her but that didn't mean she wouldn't still try and help Vi in any way that she could. There had to be something she could try. Some resource she hadn't tapped yet. Maybe she could talk to her mother about…
The train of thought never concluded. The steam had begun to clear and her eyes were drawn to the markings on her bathroom mirror. They looked vaguely familiar.
Who would...
Adrenaline shot through her body as she peered into the reflection. She was not alone.
