When Two Worlds Collide

They were back in Paradise. It was definitely calmer than the New World was, but Shanks would follow his Captain wherever life may take them. The news had been full of reports about the Whitebeard Pirates. More specifically, the one thing that caught the Captain's attention was a man who was Whitebeard's Second Division Commander, Kozuki Oden. A samurai from the Land of Wano. The grin that had came to Roger's face at the sight of the man.

He was their key to finding the last island that Roger knew was past Lodestar.

Oden was their very key for discovering what this world really had.

It almost seemed like fate when they ended up on the same island as the Whitebeard Pirates.

Shanks snickered from his place, kneeling on top of the body of a Marine that Roger had taken out. Color bar in hand, his Captain's hat on the top of his head over his own hat.

"If you wanna catch me, bring Garp or Sengoku! It's no fun fighting against you guys!" Roger exclaimed, holding up a Marine by his jacket. The man unconscious despite Roger speaking to him.

"CAPTAIN!" Buggy screamed almost immediately after, "There is Whitebeard's ship on the other side of the island! Seems like they noticed us!"

"We just finished fighting, Roger." Rayleigh stated.

"Whitebeard, huh? It's been a while." Roger mused, the smile getting bigger on his face.

Shanks took another bit of his chocolate as he snickered. Roger used to talk all the time about his fights with Whitebeard. How much he enjoyed fighting the man. This was going to get interesting.

"The birds seem distressed… They must've come ashore." Roger said, looking up towards the sky now. "Let's do it! We're only able to fight each other while we draw breath!" Roger added as he dropped the Marine. The Marine's body hitting the ground harshly. "It might be a while before we see each other again, Whitebeard."

"Who's that?! He runs so fast!" Buggy exclaimed again. "Is he a samurai?"

"A samurai?! That one everyone's talking about?!" Roger said, the interest spiking in his voice.

Buggy jumped down from the cliff he was on, moving over to join by Shanks' side. Shanks stood up, putting the chocolate into his pocket for later. They had a fight to do. The others had already started moving out as Shanks unsheathed his sword, standing back-to-back with Buggy as Buggy lifted up his knives in hand.

The samurai had easily gotten through three of their men, heading straight for Gaban and Rayleigh, a determined – almost happy – look plastered on his face. Reaching his nose was the pheromones that belonged to an Alpha. He didn't have a malicious intent to him. He seemed ot be just like Roger. Enjoying it.

"Buggy, Shanks." Roger said, pulling their attention up to him. "Stay on the apprentices. Do not engage the older pirates, you understand me?"

"Yes, Captain." Shanks stated, a smile coming to his face.

If Roger wanted him to fight, he would.

Buggy snickered next to him. "I wonder want we can get from plundering them?"

Shanks laughed. "Always thinking of treasure." He mused. "Never change, Buggy."

"He's as strong as they say. Should we stop him, Rayleigh?" Gaban questioned.

"Yeah." Rayleigh replied, holding his sword ready.

"Wait! Gaban, Rayleigh!" Roger exclaimed, rushing forward with a happy grin on his face. The almost prance in his step as he ran forward. "I don't want you to get hurt!"

Shanks laughed at Roger's response. He knew very well that Rayleigh and Gaban could take care of themselves. He just wanted to fight the samurai himself. Judging by the way he moved and the grin he flashed to Rayleigh as he pranced by.

"You just wanna fight him." Rayleigh said, confirming what Shanks was thinking.

Shanks just watched his Captain. "Hey, Samurai!" Roger exclaimed, unsheathing Ace from his hip. The haki glowing over the blade with a yell of, "Divine Departure!" The attack hit the samurai dead on, sending him flying backwards through the trees before he disappeared from sight.

Roger laughed in delight, much like he normally would when he came into contact with someone powerful. Shanks was expecting more from the samurai from everything they've heard. He hummed as he tilted his head back, leaning it against Buggy's shoulder. "How sad. He got blown away so easily."

Buggy laughed. "Now you sound just as cocky as Captain always is."

Shanks let his gaze move up to the sky where Whitebeard was quickly approaching. The haki radiating off of the Alpha's Murakumogiri. Roger laughed as he said, "Here he comes." Just before he put haki into his own blade. They both swung at the same time, their haki clashing together, keeping their blades from touching.

The power shattered the area around them, the force sending all those in the area flying back. Shanks felt his feet getting lifted off of the ground as Buggy came up next. The two flying backwards. Shanks reached out, grabbing the front of Buggy's shirt as the Alpha reached around and grabbed his shoulder. The red head used the momentum to coat his feet in haki as they were flung towards the nearby Marine vessel. Bringing his legs up before kicking against the surface and sending him and Buggy back towards the shoreline, hitting the ground in a heap. Buggy plunged his knife in the ground, to use it to keep them from flying off again. Waiting for the moment for the two Alpha Captains to stop.

The sky above them split from the two haki powers clashing. The force of the wind working to blow more of the men away. Once the power stopped, Shanks and Buggy got back to their feet, weapons in hand before they were walking over to stand near their Captain.

"You look great, Roger!" Whitebeard said, a smile plastered on his face.

"How long has it been, Newgate!" Roger replied, his own grin on his face.

Seconds later both men were laughing as their respective crews lined up behind them. Despite his sword being gripped within his left hand and preparing for battle, with a sniff he was able to tell he was the only pup on the island. He frowned at the thought. The others might actually not take him seriously just based off of that. That could also mean they would underestimate him, write him off before they actually got a taste of what he could do. He could use that to his advantage.

He was again back-to-back with his fellow apprentice. A determined grin coming to Shanks' face again. This was going to be interesting. They were the two most powerful pirate crews on the seas.

"Whatever you've got, hand it over!" Both Captains said directly at the same time.

"Get them!" The one that Shanks recognized as Marco the Phoenix screamed out, his arms engulfed in blue flames, wings made from them as he bounced up, heading straight forward as the others charged.

"Rob them!" Gaban and Rayleigh yelled, pointing forward that sent Roger's crew into action.

It was the start of the great clash.

It was a tense battle that took place over the course of three days and three nights before finally a cease fire was called between them by the Fourth Day. A banquet being hosted with the swapping of gifts and treasures that they had over the two ships.

Shanks remained standing with his back to Buggy. The exhaustion filling him from the long battle. He had been pleasantly surprised that the Whitebeard Pirates' apprentices didn't hold back against him. Though they did seem to underestimate him and Buggy because of how much younger they were compared to them. They were able to hold their own. That's what mattered.

Everyone was drinking, laughing, and partying.

Shanks wanted to go sleep for the next three days, but he had to remain with his Captain. He was ready to drop dead on his feet. It didn't help the smell of soft cashmere and amber was assaulting his nose. Making him almost lightheaded. Their bed was practically screaming his name.

"Hey, Shanks." Buggy said, cutting directly through the red head's thoughts.

"What?" Shanks muttered, turning enough so he could actually face Buggy this time.

"You see the guy with the hat over there?" Buggy questioned. He let his gaze move over to the one that Buggy was referring to. By his scent, Shanks was able to deduct that he was an Alpha. He had been one of the ones that they had stayed on. Being instructed to stick with the apprentices rather than face off against the upper ranked members of the Whitebeard crew.

"Yeah." Shanks replied.

"I heard he didn't sleep yesterday or the day before during the ceasefire at night." Buggy stated.

Shanks quirked his head. That was odd. Sure, Shanks was exhausted, having barely slept at all during the last few days. It wasn't completely something someone wouldn't do. Purposely not sleeping was stupid though. It would leave a person exhausted and prone to attacks. "Why? He wanted to show off?!"

"No!" Buggy exclaimed. "They say he's never slept even once since he was born!"

Shanks felt the shock fill him as his eyes widened, turning to face the Alpha standing next to him. "What? Is there such a person?" He questioned, pausing at the thought. If someone never slept, they got more time to enjoy the world. That was something Shanks wished he could do. A small smile slipped on his face as he muttered, "That's great. I wonder if he enjoys life twice as much as us?"

"Idiot!" Buggy exclaimed, turning to send a glare over to the person they were talking about. "It's not that simple. He must be a monster!"

"A monster?" Shanks snorted. "You're overexaggerating again, Buggy."

Buggy made a humph type noise as he crossed his arms. "You'll see one day."

They had been joined by the rest the of the Whitebeard crew, including a woman named Toki and two children. The pups were so small. One was just an infant and the other looked to be a toddler. Shanks couldn't help the smile that came to his face. From the way the samurai – who he learned was named Oden, the Second Division Commander – acted, this woman was his mate, and these pups were his children.

They had joined in on the banquet, eating along with them. Shanks wasn't far from them, sitting on a nearby rock. His eyes practically glued to them as he watched the woman try and get the older child to eat, but the boy was refusing to do so. A look of dismay on his mother's face as she kept trying. The baby was behind her, sleeping soundly in a small bassinet. Tucked away safely.

He paused as he noticed movement in the nearby bushes, putting his plate down as he narrowed his eyes. The rustling revealing a bear peeking out. His eyes widened as the bear starting sniffling around, getting closer to the baby.

It felt like something in him completely snapped and he was on his feet, haki in his feet to give him an extra push. He reached for his sword, his heart skipping a beat once he realized he didn't have it. It was sitting back on the rock. It was too late now. He was already moving.

He couldn't stop.

The bear stood on its hind legs, paw in the air.

Shanks couldn't hear anything through the white noise in his ears.

The next thing he felt was the pain in his back.

He barely flinched at the pierce against his skin, the feel of his blood coating his back as he cracked open his eyes. Seeing the baby now awake and looking up at him with curious eyes. He smiled, "You're alright." He muttered. Through the corner of his eye, he caught side of a sword sitting on the blanket that was on the ground. He reached over to it, unsheathing it as he heard another roar behind him. He pushed himself up, coating the blade in haki with the strength that he had left. With the determined shout, he pierced the bear directly through the chest. The bear freezing as the light left its eyes before it fell directly on top of him. His head hitting the ground harshly that had him seeing stars.

The world around him went dark after that.

Buggy felt like his heart stopped completely as Shanks moved away from him. Disappearing in a flash of red before he was leaning over the baby that belonged to the rival crew. The bear that had broken through the tree line now looming over them. Using his own body as a human shield. It had all happened way to quickly for anyone to react in time.

"SHANKS!" He screamed out, just as the bear's claw came down on Shanks' back. The blood sputtering out and coating through the white fabric. He grabbed his knives, slipping them into his hands as he got to his feet.

How did a bear even decide to get close enough to them?

His eyes locked directly to Shanks. The pleased look on the red head's face as his lips moved. That look changed into a determined one. Grabbing a nearby sword and turning. The blade plunging directly into the bear's chest.

Buggy froze as the bear fell on top of Shanks. The other disappearing coming from sight now. He wasn't the only one moving. Roger was the first to get over, flipping the bear over and off of his apprentice.

Buggy rushed up behind his Captain. His heart beating against his chest as he looked down. Shanks' eyes were closed. The blood coating his shirt as Roger kneeled down quickly, sash in hand as he turned Shanks over onto his stomach. Pressing the fabric into Shanks' back. "CROCUS!" Roger shouted.

The Alpha doctor was already moving forward, dropping down on the other side of Shanks. Buggy couldn't even move. Locked completely in place through the chaos that was now moving around. He could hear Toki comforting her children. Oden asking if his pups were alright before he was asking about Shanks.

Crocus was moving swiftly, ripping Shanks' shirt away, revealing the damage to his back. Three long slashes across the surface. "They aren't deep. Shouldn't even scar." Crocus stated as he got to work. Disinfecting them before he was placing gaze over them despite the amount of blood pouring from the wounds. His hands now coated in red. "He shouldn't have passed out. Not from this." Crocus kept muttering.

Buggy finally found it in him to move, going around and kneeling at Shanks' head, grabbing the boy's head, and placing it in his lap. He stopped as he felt something against his hand, pulling his hand away to see the blood coating it. "Crocus-san." Holding his hand out towards the doctor.

Crocus looked over, cursing as he turned and reached into his medical bag again. Grabbing out more bandages. "Roger." Crocus merely said. Roger moved, reaching out and taking Shanks' head into his hands, moving it up enough that Crocus could get to it. Moving some out of his hair out of the way showed the gash that was there. The doctor turned back around, grabbing some alcohol that he dumped over his hands, washing Shanks' blood away before he was grabbing out a set of gloves. Slipping them onto his hands. Grabbing out another bag from the contents of his medical supplies. Pulling out a needle and some sutures. Stringing it together, he turned back around with another bottle of disinfect, pouring it over the wound. The liquid moving down and hitting Buggy's lap. Buggy couldn't even find it in himself to care. "Keep his head as still as possible. That gash is a deep one."

Roger did as he was told, keeping his hands out of the way, but his fingers remained to keep Shanks' hair parted. Buggy hated the way that Shanks didn't move at all as Crocus worked. It was for the best, but Shanks wasn't moving.

He stared down at his hands with wide eyes. Shanks' blood coating over his fingers. He had seen Shanks bleed before, but never like this. He sent a sharp glare over to the Whitebeard Pirates as some of them started to walk forward. The instinct to protect flaring even more as he used himself to place a shield between them and the injured red head. He turned his attention back to Shanks. Crocus having finished what he was doing and was now wrapping bandages around the wound.

"Is he alright?" Toki behind him exclaimed, now holding onto the baby that Shanks had got injured protecting.

"Why?" Marco questioned. "Why would he protect a pup that doesn't belong to his crew?"

"Does it matter?" Bay questioned. "He protected Hiyori. That bear would have killed her."

"Anything we can do to help?" Oden questioned.

Crocus grunted. "He'll be fine. Just in pain." The doctor replied. "Shanks is a tough one. Probably wouldn't have even fussed about the wound to his back if it wasn't for hitting his head."

"What did he even hit?" Buggy questioned.

Roger hummed, pointing next to them at a rock that was poking out from where Shanks' head would have landed. Sure enough, the pointed curve had a thin layer of blood over it and a few pieces of red hair. "That's our culprit."

With Crocus finishing his work, he placed his supplies back before he reached back in for another needle. "For the pain." He muttered, filling it with what Buggy would guess was a pain relief and sticking it into Shanks's arm.

"I'm going to go get him some blankets." Oden stated suddenly before he was running off. His loud steps echoing.

Buggy sighed as he looked back down at Shanks. He needed to wash his hands, but he couldn't find it in himself to move. Shanks head was back to being settled in his lap.

Why did he feel so afraid?

X

Whitebeard had finally caved and had allowed Roger to bring Oden along with him on the final year of their journey. It had taken some time, but Shanks had finally came too some time before they were reboarding the Oro Jackson with Oden and his family in tow.

Shanks' back screamed at him as he moved into the their room. Dropping face down onto Buggy's bed as he groaned. It wasn't that the injury itself really hurt him. It was the aggravation from the movement that was bugging him.

The red head sighed as he buried his nose into the pillow that carried his own scent, moving his arms underneath it as he settled into the fabric. Oden had given him his gratitude for what had happened. Even offering to carry him back to the ship instead of letting him walk. He was fine. He was just glad that the baby was okay.

Maybe, next time he would actually keep his sword in his sash instead of setting it beside him. A lesson well learned.

The door opened again, this time revealing Buggy coming in. Now in fresh clothes himself instead of his blood-soaked ones. The Alpha didn't say anything to him as he simply plopped onto the bed next to him. Arms behind his head as he closed his eyes.

They laid in silence for a few moments before Buggy was whispering, "You idiot. Don't scare me like that."
