Chapter 19: A book and a watch

Misaki

"What the hell was that?" I demanded as soon as Rias, Issei and that ignorant, overconfident chicken were teleported out from that weird dimension. The TV was still on, although the screen was just static now that the broadcast ended and the signal was lost.

If Azazel was surprised or angry, he seemed to be pretty good at hiding it, except when he actually crushed the glass of wine he was holding only a few seconds before.

He shook his head with a sigh, "I knew he really wanted to marry Rias and everything but to go this far…if it weren't for her resigning from the game, Riser would've done a lot worse than just beating your brother half to death."

"But they're just gonna let him do that?" I asked incredulously, "No one even says a word against him?"

Azazel shrugged, "What else can you expected them to do? His house is from one of the 72 Pillars and he's a pure-blooded devil."

"But what about Issei? He looked really bad when they took him out," I said, having to shake my head to stop thinking about bad he looked. Even when that Raynare chick almost tried killing him at the abandoned church, he didn't look that bad (although having both knees pierced by spears that were fueled with holy energy, although I would use holy sparingly since she's a fallen angel, did not sound any better).

"He'll be fine, although he'll feel exhausted and a bit upset after he wakes up, but he'll be okay," Azazel answered, "Whenever a piece is 'retired' from the game, they're teleported out from there and they're taken care of by medical personnel of the families."

I nodded, then I looked at my phone, it was only 2 am. Time really did slow down while Azazel and I were here.

After a sad attempt at trying to make my own magic circle getting home that did not work, Azazel had to make me one instead (I should totally work on these things one day).

After laying on the couch and channel surfing for nearly ten minutes, I knew that I wouldn't be going to sleep anytime soon.

I was restless. And sure, Issei's behavior towards women and their physical features overall was mortifying in its own right, he was still my brother, and I was worried about him.

I tried drinking some warm milk, playing games on my phone, then drinking tea, hell, I even tried counting sheep! But nothing seemed to be working.

Sighing in defeat, I headed upstairs, wrapping an old blanket around me and laying on my bed. The book I had taken from the Old Schoolhouse was still in one my desk drawers, untouched since the last time I left it there.

Whenever I'd try to read it, I would always be interrupted so I eventually gave up on reading it all together, now it was more than a fancy looking paperweight. That is until a crimson glow had begun to emanate from the drawer.

"You don't want me to sleep either, huh?" I asked, almost like I was expecting a book of all things to answer. Getting up and getting the book out after I took a seat in my desk chair, I took a hair tie that was nearby and put my hair up, since I wasn't going to sleep anytime soon so I might as well get my hair out of the way.

It was an old book, covered entirely with brown leather that looked worn. But despite how worn down it looked, the leather felt smooth. Then a strap with an old silver buckle was what held the book closed. A red gem was right in the center of the front cover, and on the back of the book, there was a gem in the same spot, except this gem was blue.

The book wasn't in any language that I've ever seen before. And when I tried to look up anything about the odd language online, nothing came up either. I tried talking to Aeron about it, but seeing as he wasn't answering right now, I guess sacred gears, like people, needed time to rest once in awhile too.

I was desperate enough to try and even ask Cerberus what it was about. But if I did, I knew that he would be gloating about it until the end of my days. But my stubbornness didn't relent, so I wrapped a blanket around my shoulders, and opened the book. No one would be up this late to interrupt me. Or at least no one I know.

...

...

It was almost as if some thing in this universe wanted me to eat my words. Because as soon as I tried to read the first page, the first page, I heard someone knocking on the front door downstairs.

A part of me wanted to ignore it (which was something I did contemplate, mind you), but the knocking continued. I also didn't want to wake up my parents so with a resigned sigh, I got up, wrapping the blanket tighter around me, and headed downstairs.

The sight in front of me was a smug looking Vali, and I had half a mind in shutting the door in his face and going back to my room and actually sleeping, the motivation to actually sit and read having left me. Ah, goodbye motivation.

I almost did shut the door in his face, had he not just walked in instead.

"You know what time it is right?" I asked him while trying to sound like I just woke up, "If it was my parents, they'd think you were some kind of delinquent or something."

Vali snorted, "Yeah sure, anyway, I'm here because we have something to talk about. And you might need my help because of it."

I raised an eyebrow, "Oh yeah? What do we have to talk about?"

"Let's start with that book you grabbed when I helped you get your weapon back." At my surprised look, he crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow, "What? No offense, but you weren't very good at hiding it."

Oh boy.

The current situation was a bit chaotic. Afterall, it wasn't every day that the watch that had belonged to the Left Eye had started to tick again. The watch hadn't worked since the last holder of the Left Eye, which was at least was 16 years ago. It had started to tick once more some number of weeks ago. After deciding that they could no longer wait, a group of women had surrounded the watch that was protected by numerous magic seals, discussing (well shouting was a more appropriate word really) about what they should do now that the Left Eye had awoken again.

"If we want to meet the Left Eye while they're still alive, we have to go and retrieve them now!" One voice spoke, followed by numerous shouts of agreement. This call seemed to cause a bigger uproar than before.

"But if we do, don't we risk exposing ourselves if we just go out and send search parties for anyone with a bit of magic power?" Another replied.

Some also agreed.

"Sisters," A voice spoke, loud and clear, "While it may be true that the watch only works if the current holder has finally activated their powers, we cannot be certain if they are ready to join us."

"But Lyda, what if the Fallen Angels get to them first? If they've fooled past wielders before, how can we know this won't end the same?"

The black haired woman, Lyda, was quiet for a moment, "That I cannot be certain of. However, I do know we must keep the faith that the Left Eye will return where it rightfully belongs."

Although some weren't thrilled with the answer, it was still an answer. What Lyda said was true, the Left Eye would return to the Umbra one way or another.

The group that surrounded the watch had begun to disperse. Save for another woman who had her arms crossed, a bemused expression on their face Although they did wait for everyone to be gone before speaking to her fellow witch.

"We must keep the faith that the Left Eye will return where it rightfully belongs," They mocked, "What a load of bull, Lyda. You only want us to wait so you can stay in charge."

Lyda narrowed her eyes, "That's quite the accusation you're making, but I would watch those words of yours, Lucia. I don't have any intention to stay in charge of the Umbra. It's only because of the previous Elder, left the job to me until the Left Eye would return to us."

"Of course," Lucia replied coyly, "Whatever helps you have a clear conscience."

"Or perhaps you're only jealous that Mother chose me for the position and not you?" Lyda asked, one hand on her hip while the other pointed an accusatory finger at her younger sister.

Lucia snorted if the comment affected her, she didn't show it outwardly, "Yeah yeah, well I'll leave you to your thoughts, now since you clearly have a lot of them right now. See you, Elder."

Once her sister left, Lyda bristled in annoyance, Elder. She wasn't even that old to be called Elder! But then Lyda let out a sigh, only her sister could ever get a reaction out of her. But for now, her sister witches were right, something had to be done. Her mother was much better at this kind of thing than she was.

So I got an ask on tumblr asking about if you guys can draw stuff for any of my fics and YES YOU GUYS CAN like I'm flattered that someone decided that they would want to make art for any of my fics like omg like that's so nice.

I'm pretty satisfied with this chapter ngl (I would've had it published yesterday but I was a dumb and I accidentally erased a piece of the chapter that I had to rewrite and then I feel asleep afterwards lmao so now here we are). For Lyda I'm imagining she looks a bit like Shenhua from Black Lagoon except without the long bang in her face, she has one of those half up and half down hairstyles. Then for Lucia I was thinking a bit of Naoko Takakura from Tari Tari. (Quick bit of trivia: Lucia and Lyda were actually a part of some early ideas about this story and were going to be main characters but they were nameless at the time. So now they're here sort of :^))). Also I decided on L names because why not they were basically gonna be the same character except I couldn't decide if the character would be have a serious personality or not lol)

Okay guys that's about it, so let me know what you think! Leave a review and until next time!
