[The Grille]

The Grille parking lot hosted several other cars from the school. This was the go-to place for food on lunch for the seniors. Matt sat next to Bella on the outside at the table, and Caroline sat next to Tyler. They ordered quickly and Caroline talked about prom some more. Tyler has his arm wound around Caroline casually, and then Bella seemed to go in a daze.

When Matt poked her, Bella blinked. "Hmm?"

"You were doing that thing again." He said.

Bella blushed with embarrassment. "Sorry." She looked to Caroline, who didn't seem to notice

"So, Bell, tonight do you want to do dinner at Tejas?" Caroline suddenly asked.

Bella smiled. "Sure, sounds good Care."

Tyler smiled. "Matt, you down too, man?"

Matt shrugged. "Why not. We gonna carpool?"

"Yeah, we'll take my dad's escalade." Tyler threw out there. "Meet me at my house."

Caroline smiled. "I'll just go there right after I pick up my tiara."

"I can swing by and pick up Bella on my way." Matt offered.

Bella smiled and nodded. "Sure, save on gas." She laughed and Matt smiled.

After lunch, they returned to school. Bella parked next to Jasper's car, and everyone got out. They made it in time with ten minutes to spare. Bella went to her locker and grabbed her English and Lit book and her European history book. She had English next. She walked towards her class and saw Jasper. She was surprised to see him. They had every class together so far. She sat in front of him. The other kids filed in. She had her book already open and her notebook out and was writing.

The teacher, Mr. Spiles, came in quietly, called roll call and then gave them their assignment. The rest of class blew by quick and then her last class, European history, she ran into Jasper in the hall. She wasn't looking and ran into his chest. She stumbled back in surprise. He reached out a hand and steadied her automatically.

"Sorry," she murmured. He nodded and sat down. They had every class together. She found it strange, but she said nothing. Matt had European history with her as well.

"Oh, Bell. Why don't you just drive over after school. Vicki would like to see you again." Matt said. Vicki was his little sister. Middle school, eighth grade.

Bella smiled. "Sure. I'll bring her the drawing too. I drew her a castle finally."

Matt smiled. "She'll be excited now."

The bell rung and class started. Jasper seemed to stare at her a lot. Bella could feel him looking at her. It sent shivers up her spine. She didn't say anything abut it because she thought she may have been imagining it.

When the day was over, they all met in the parking lot. Caroline bubbled over. "Bella! So, you're going to Matt's right away?" She hinted at something.

"Oh, Care. It's not like that. His sister. I have a drawing for her, so I'm bringing it to her. You known guys aren't into me. Look at me." She said, and Caroline rolled her eyes.

"You're beautiful, Bell. Guys look at you all the time. You're just oblivious."

Bella looked puzzled. "They do?"

Caroline sighed. "Bell, dear. You're extremely attractive. I know this because Vicki has soccer practice and a ballet rehearsal tonight. Matt likes you, Bell. Don't screw it up. And wear your hair down." She advised then got in her car.

Bella just looked dumbstruck. So, Matt wanted to spend time with her. She half smiled to herself. It made her feel a little better. She got in her Jeep and let her hair down. It fell to the middle of her back in a dark waterfall. She turned on her Jeep and drove away to Matt's house.

He was already home when she got here. She stopped and got gas on her way over. She parked beside him and then she went to the door and knocked. Matt answered almost immediately.

"Hey, come on in. Vicki is at soccer." He said with a half frown.

Bella shrugged. "It's okay. I'll just leave the drawing for her. You'll have to tell her I said hi. So, what do you wanna do? Call of Duty?" She asked, motioning to his PS4 in the living room.

Matt smiled. "Hell yeah."

They sat and played for a couple hours without realizing it. Caroline called, breaking them from the game. "Hey, you guys coming?"

Bella looked at the clock. They were almost going to be late. "Oh, yeah. We're on our way over now." She said and hung up. She shot Matt in the head and set down the controller. "We gotta go." She laughed.

Matt laughed too, and turned the game off. "Alright, let's roll." He said and grabbed his keys. He drove a black, four door Toyota Tundra. It was older, but it still ran great.

They pulled up at Tyler's house and got out. Matt just walked straight in. Tyler smiled and gave Matt a bro hug and then Bella looked to Caroline.

"Everyone ready?"

Everyone agreed and got in Tyler's dad's Escalade.

All evening was full of random stories and Tyler and Matt high-fiving people. At the end of dinner, Matt drove back to his house with Bella.

"Well, that was fun." Matt commented.

Bella smiled and followed Matt inside. "It was. Where's your parents?"

"Oh. They're at one of those retreats. Vicki is at her friend's since I told her I would be late."

Bella smiled. "She's thirteen now, right?"

Matt shook his head. "Nope. Just turned fourteen."

"Wow. Now I feel old." Bella joked.

Matt smiled. "Nah., She acts younger than she is. That's why. So, You guys are riding to prom together?"

"Yeah. Care is renting a limo. I spent like twelve hors shopping with her Saturday too. She's worried about her not being prom queen." She said and rolled her eyes.

Matt laughed. "Yeah, Caroline is the princess, definitely. I don't see why she wouldn't win. Unless you took her crown."

"What? No. I'm only running because Care nominated me. She's gonna win. She's all fancy. I'm just…me. Mess art student council girl."

Matt shrugged. "Well. There's nothing wrong with that. So- "

Bella's phone rang. "Oh. Sorry." She answered quickly. "Hey dad. What?" She paused. "Okay, I'm leaving now." She hung up the phone. "I'm sorry Matt. I have to get to the hospital." She said and rushed out the door.

Bella felt her chest tighten. She pulled up at the hospital and rushed up the stairs since it would be faster than the elevator. She rushed to the nurse's desk, and they directed her to her mother's room. Her father was waiting outside.

"How bad is it?" She was breathing heavy from her mad dash up the stairs.

Her dad looked at her with watery eyes. "Peanut…. your mother didn't make it…and neither did your sister." He choked out. Charles Swan wasn't a big emotional man. He rarely cried. Bella favored Charlie, getting her dark hair and dark eyes from him, while her mother had auburn hair and green eyes.

Bella dropped to her knees. "That…" she drifted off. Tears burned her vision and she sobbed, a terrible noise escaping her. He dad went to her, dropping his knees as well. He was wearing his police uniform still, and his belt was still strapped to him with all his things including his gun, and handcuffs. "Jake is in ICU though. We'll have to wait and see what the doctors have to say. I called Caroline. She and Tyler are on their way." He said, and he stroked her hair until she stopped sobbing so hard.

Caroline and Lance ran down the hall, seeing Bella crumpled on her knees in her father's arms. Matt was following behind them.

"Bell!" Caroline said and Matt was there with her.

Bella looked up to see Matt standing beside her and her father. She sprung up Matt's arms went around her, holding her against him. "Bella. It's okay. We're here."

Charlie got to his feet shakily. "You guys, bring her home for now. I'll call when I hear more about Jake."

Matt nodded and guided Bella to the elevator. Caroline and Tyler right behind her. Bella broke away from Matt, feeling strange in his arms.

"I'm okay. I just need to be alone. You guys…go home." Her vice shook.

Matt shook his head. "Bell. You can't drive like this. Let us help you."

"I can't think. I just need to be alone. Please." Her voice sounded strained.

Caroline looked at Matt and shook her head. Bella walked through the lobby and into the parking lot, running into Jasper. He put his hand out to catch her.

"I'm sorry." Bella sniffed. She looked up and saw Jasper's face. Her eyes were puffing from her tears and her face was tearstained.

"Hey…are you okay?"

Matt watched Jasper steady Bella, his hand on her arm. He felt a bit jealous, but he buried it deep inside.

Another guy, who was slightly taller than Jasper with darker blonde-brown hair, and navy eyes, walked up. He was smoking. Bella saw him, his features stronger than Jasper's. When he came closer, Bella could see that his eyes were lighter than navy. His hair was neatly styled on his head, and was shorter, cropped above his ears. His skin was like alabaster, like Jasper's. She blinked and her heart began to flutter. Her eyes met his for a moment.

"Jasper. Come on. We have to see dad." He said in a smooth, even tone.

Jasper looked to Bella. "Feel better." He said and moved away with his, what Bella assumed, was his brother.

Bella let out a breath. Matt was coming towards her. "Are you okay? Did you know him?"

Bella pushed a hand through her long hair. "I'm fine. Yeah. That was Jasper Hale. He's the new guy at school."

Matt nodded. "Okay. Well, come on. Let's get you home." Bella felt sort of dazed still. She let Matt bring her to her Jeep. He helped her in. "I'll follow you back and make sure you get there okay." He said, and she just nodded.

When she got home, she went inside quickly and locked the door. She went to the couch and sat down. She let the tears fall more. She ended up laying on her side and cried herself to sleep.

[The Next Morning]

The next morning, Caroline was there, waking Bella. "Hey. Rise and shine. I made you waffles."

Bella rubbed her eyes. "Care?"

"Yes?"

"Is dad still at the hospital?" She asked her friend, and Caroline looked at her confused. "What is it?"

"Bell…last night…"

"What is it Care, just tell me." She looked around, recognizing Caroline's room. "How…"

"Bella. We came back here last night after dinner. We drank way too much. I talked to your mom this morning and told her you were here and you're okay."

Bella felt majorly confused. "A dream…. I had a bad dream…"

Caroline shrugged. "Probably. Now come on. Let's eat and head to school."

They got dressed, and Caroline gave Bella some clothes to wear. Bella didn't like the dress, but she let her friend be happy. The black and blue dress kind of went with her style anyways. Caroline even forced her to wear her hair down again, and put makeup on her. They then ate and drove to school.

People did a double take when Bella walked by. They weren't used to seeing her like this. Bella tried to ignore them. Matt was talking to Tyler when Caroline and Bella walked up.

"Oh…wow…. Bell…" Matt said, mesmerized.

Tyler smirked. "You look great Bell."

Bella smiled. "Thanks. Well, I'll see you guys at lunch." She turned and left to go to Chem. Caroline in step beside her.

"Did you see the look on Matt's face? He's really into you." She nudged Bella playfully.

Bella laughed. "Matt is just a friend Care. It's not like that." She rounded the corner and ran into Jasper. "Oh, I'm sorry." She apologized and bent down to pick up her books that fell into the floor, but Jasper was already scooping them up.

"No problem." He said and handed her, her books and took his seat like yesterday.

Caroline smirked at Bella. "You know…he's pretty hot."

Bella blushed. "Well Care, not all of us required a boy to make us happy."

"You're right, but you do need a prom date."

Bella rolled her eyes and sat next to Jasper, leaving her friend at the door grinning.

Enzo walked in. Their normal teacher must still be sick, Bella mused. "Good morning class." He said and sat down at the desk. "Pass your study guides forward." He was diving right in. Everyone passed their guides to the front. "Alright, today, we're going to copy the notes that I'm going to put up on the projector. When you're done, you may talk amongst yourselves or go out in the courtyard for the remainder of the period."

People cheered and he turned the projector on and dimmed the lights. It seemed like people finished quickly. Caroline and Bella went outside on the courtyard and sat on a bench under the flowering tree.

"So, last night was pretty crazy. Matt really was into you last night. You seemed to be having real fun too." Caroline said.

Bella smiled a small smile. "I don't remember anything at all. Just my bad dream."

"Well…that sucks." She said and then stretched.

Bella smiled at her friend. They had two more days until prom. Caroline was always so busy around this time, preparing for it."

The rest of the day seemed to fly by. Bella parted ways and went to her Jeep. Jasper was getting into his car. Bella thought he was strange. She started her Jeep and pulled away, and drove home.

"Mom, I'm home." She called out. Her mom was in the kitchen washing dishes.

"Hey honey, how was school?" Renee asked. Renee was like a little sun. Bella always felt better when she saw her mom smile at her.

Bella came in and kissed her mother's cheek. "It was great. I finished that painting I was working on, but Tyler claimed it already."

Renee laughed. "He's always loved your art. So, Prom is Friday. You and Caroline have everything planned out?"

"Yeah, me and Caroline are going to get mani-pedi's and our hair done. She is forcing me to. Just like she forced this on me." She said, motioning to the dress she was wearing and the makeup.

"Well, you look beautiful. You should wear pretty things honey. It suits you well."

Bella laughed. "It's too much hassle. It takes Caroline hours to get ready sometimes."

"Well, that's part of being a girl." Renee said, and turned the water off and dried her hands. "Are you going out tonight?"

Bella shrugged. "I was thinking of a move with Care, but I can stay in if you need me to."

"Oh no. You can go. Me and your father were going to take Jake and Juliet out. We didn't know if you were going to be here."

Bella smiled. "Oh, well yeah, I'll go over to Caroline's. I'm sure we have a lot to plan two days before prom."

Renee smiled again. "Okay sweetie. Well, have fun."

Bella went up to her room and grabbed her messenger bag with her art supplies and her overnight bag and was out the door, her phone ringing.

"Hello." Bella hit speaker as she was driving.

"Bell, meet me at the mall!" Caroline said quickly, and hung up.

Bella laughed and drove towards the mall, arriving at the mall like thirty minutes later. She met Caroline on the food court. Tyler was with her and so was Matt.

"Hey guys." Bella said. She was still wearing Caroline's dress and shoes.

Tyler smiled. "So, we're gonna go get tuxes while you and Care go do girl stuff." He announced and parted ways with them.

Caroline grabbed Bella's arm and drug her to the JCPenney's to look at clothes. She was thrown into a flurry of clothing. Caroline was babbling on about outfits that she wanted her to wear. Girl clothing. Bella just let her friend go on. Maybe Caroline and her mom was right. She did feel better about herself today. So, Bella tried on the outfits Caroline had picked for her.

After a couple of hours of trying on clothes, Bella was set with practically a whole new wardrobe. Bella only laughed at Caroline's enthusiasm.

"All this is unnecessary but you're going to force it all on me anyways."

Caroline nodded gleefully. "I am not gonna take no for an answer." She said with a smile. She paid for the items and started through the mall to the shoe store.

Jasper caught Bella's eye. He had his hands in his pockets and leaning against the rail. He was talking to someone that held some surprising similarities to him. Bella seemed to pale. Her dream…That man was in her dream. Jasper looked up at Bella, he never smiled but she thought she seen him sort of smirk.

"Bell," Caroline said suddenly. "You should go talk to him instead of staring." She teased.

Bella tore her gaze from Jasper's brother. "Oh well. He's sort of strange; don't you think? He's so quiet."

"So are you. You're just as strange. So go talk to him. I'll meet you at the shoe depot." She ran off before Bella could say anything else.

Bella took a breath and walked over to Jasper and his brother. "Hi. Jasper…right?" She started off.

Jasper looked at her and nodded. "Yeah."

"Uh well…I guess I never welcomed you properly. Welcome to Mystic Falls. Is this your brother?" She asked and looked at Jasper's brother. He grinned big at her. His eyes looked her over quickly.

"Yes. I'm Emmett." He introduced and extended a hand.

Bella shook his hand. It was warm, and for some reason she found that odd. She smiled anyways. "Well, welcome as well Emmett." Her voice sounded small. She couldn't break her gaze from his. She felt like she was in a trance.

"Thank you." Jasper said suddenly.

"You're shopping for prom?" Emmett asked, ignoring his brother.

Bella took her hand back and smiled. "Well. Not really. My best friend Caroline is forcing me to go to the thing, even thought I'll be the third wheel." She said with a nervous laugh.

Emmett raised a brow. "Third wheel?" He glanced to Jasper. Jasper sighed quietly and then he flashed his smile. Bella was a bit surprised. She never saw him smile before.

"Well…why don' I accompany you then. I could be the fourth wheel." Jasper offered.

Bella blushed and looked away. "Well, I couldn't do that to you. Caroline is a bit…eccentric."

Jasper looked to his brother and then back at her. "It's okay. Chemistry isn't any different than me tagging along. What color dress?"

"Uh. Midnight blue." She answered. She had a date for prom, and she felt a bit giddy inside suddenly.

Emmett smiled. "Well, I'll leave you two for now. Jasper I'll meet you at home. Have fun." He said and parted ways.

"You don't have to stay here with me. I'm going to be with Caroline trying on shoes for a while." She said quickly. Jasper was actually charming when he wasn't acting mysterious. "Well, I'm your date for prom. So, I should get to know you, right?" He said and held his arm out.

Bella hesitated and looped her arm through his and they walked to the shoe depot.

Caroline spotted them and had to contain her excitement. Bella left Jasper's side and went to Caroline. "Found our fourth wheel." Bella chimed and Caroline's eyes widened, and she smiled.

"Well, that's awesome!" Caroline clapped. "Well now that is fixed, I found three pairs of shoes for you Bell. They're your size. Already paid for. Let's head back to the food court and get some food."

Bella laughed and the three of them went to the food court. Bella sat down at the table while Caroline ran off to get the food ordered.

"So, Bella. Does everyone call you Bell?" Jasper asked.

Bella shook her head. "Just my friends. Bell and Care, they'll typically say since we've been best friends since the fourth grade."

Jasper nodded then brushed his hand over hers and picked it up and looked at it. "You're not really a princess like Caroline."

Tyler and Matt found Caroline in line and Brad looked her. "Where's Bell at?"

Caroline smiled big. "Sitting with Jasper. Apparently, he asked her to prom. It's so sweet. He's the new guy too. It's just so romantic." She sighed, with a smile.

Matt felt his heart drop to his stomach. He was too late. He knew he should have asked her sooner, but he smiled anyways, pushing through it. "Well, that's good. I'm going to ask Jessica. So, we can all ride in the limo together."

Tyler smiled at his friend, knowing he was planning on asking Bella, but he ran out of time. "Sounds good." He agreed and then t hey helped Caroline carry the food back.

Jasper looked up at Matt and Tyler as they sat. Matt saw Jasper holding Bella's hand and felt the jealousy rise just a bit.

Bella smiled. "Awesome. I'm hungry," she said and stuck a fry in her mouth.

Caroline invited Jasper back to the house to hang out and he agreed, surprisingly. Caroline's mom was out of town at a police conference, so the house would be empty.

Bella smiled at Jasper. He was turning out to be really interesting, and Bella liked that about him. Sure he was mysterious, but he was warming up to her and her friends, and seeming to feel more comfortable. After they finished food, they piled up in their vehicles and headed towards Caroline's house for more fun.
