Back with the update. Now I got a question from Alphasdragon in the reviews asking how long this takes place before canon, and the answer to that is about 1.5 years before the sludge villain incident. I actually don't know the exact length Anne lived in Amphibia, but I would like to think it was about 6 months. Also, don't worry about the powers, we are nowhere near that time but I have a general idea of how I want to display them. So don't worry!
Wartwood.
A neat little town, full of froggy characters living life to the fullest. For some, that means just trying to get through the day without being eaten. Others try to make a living through their crops and products that they sell to each other. Some may be content with living out their life without anything drastic changes happening to them, but not for Sprig Planter.
All his life he lived with his grandfather Hop Pop and his younger sister Polly. He was always looking out for the next fun thing to appear, even if he didn't always think it through. Sure he may have blown up their dinner, rode a millipede until it crashed into Hop Pop's bedroom, and made giant moths crashed into their house yesterday… But he was responsible! He would prove it to Hop Pop and Polly. Now all he has to do is catch a beast that no one has ever seen before in the history of Wartwood.
…
Should be simple.
From what he heard from Wally when he was speaking to the angry mob, the creature had a large head, a bump right in the middle of its face, and deep green eyes who seem to watch over your every move with an analytical gaze. So after making the totally responsible decision of bribing his tadpole sister with candy, he set off to the woods in search of the beast. Hopping over logs and swinging through the trees, and looking for any signs of the creature.
After a while, he landed on the ground and crouched after noticing some weird tracks embedded in the mud. They were long and round, almost oval-shaped. With the top being wider than the bottom. There were symmetrical lines that ran across the foot horizontally. There didn't He was suddenly knocked backward when a yellow bag of some kind hit him and made him get tangled into a bunch of vines that were hanging low to the ground.
Slightly dazed at the impact, the young frog blinked a few times to get to clear the blur from his eyes. When he got his vision back, he saw an odd creature who was panting very hard as it stared at him with wide green eyes. Said eyes also had slight bags under them, and messy green curls that covered his giant head with four distinct dots on both of its cheeks. Then he noticed the distinctive face bump that was planted on the middle of his face.
"The beast!"
"W-Why are you following me?!", the green-eyed creature asked fearfully.
"Don't try to eat me you monster!", the frog yelled defiantly, "I'll have you know that I taste terrible!"
"I-I'm not going to eat you."
"You tried to eat Wally!", Sprig threw an accusatory finger at him from the tangled vines.
"I-I was trying to ask him for help!", the beast pleaded, "He r-ran away screaming when he saw me."
"Yeah, that does sound like Wally."
Before the two could say anymore, a loud piercing screech was heard through the jungle that didn't sound too far off from where they were standing. Off in the distance, the sound of trees getting knocked down can be heard as thundering footsteps drawled closer to their location.
"I-I-It's coming back...", the beast paled as his green eyes widened and his legs started shaking.
"What is?!"
The green-haired beast then took off running past the frog as the thundering stomps neared, leaving Sprig flailing in the vines struggling to get free. "Ahhh!"
While Midoriya thinks that was the most pleasant conversation he had with someone that didn't involve his mother, he was still just trying to make it out alive. He had only made it a couple of steps away with his backpack in hand before he heard the frog scream. Freezing in his tracks, he looked back and saw the pink anthropomorphic frog struggle to get the vines off of himself. What was he doing? Leaving someone to get eaten? Was that something a hero would do?
Even if all his life he was told that he wouldn't amount to anything, he still had to try. Because a real hero wouldn't give up! So after mustering all the courage he had inside of him with a deep breath, he turned around and charged towards the tangled amphibian. He started to claw and pull apart the vines to the best of his ability, making a steady process as the frog slowly started to get untangled.
"What are you doing!?", the tangled victim screamed at his savior.
With a shaky grin, he looked up to the frog, "Y-You looked like you were asking for help."
As the frog got free, he wasted no time in picking him up and booking it to a rotten log. He threw the backpack in some nearby bushes and crawled into the log with the frog next to him, covering the amphibian's mouth as a giant spiky red foot stomped next to the outside. The two held their breaths as they saw a giant red praying mantis through the log, with the giant bug looking around before giving up and stomping away.
When they couldn't hear the footsteps anymore, they both released a sigh of relief as they flopped against the inside of the log. The frog looked at him in amazement as he adjusted his hat.
"You... you saved me...", before cheering in amazement and wonder, "You're not a beast at all! You're a hero! An ugly ugly ugly hero!" He said in complete confidence.
The quirkless teen blushed brightly as he tried to fight off the compliment with some awkward stammers, "I-It was n-nothing, I m-mean you need h-help and I...", suddenly his eyes were blown wide as he stared at the other in disbelief. "W-What did you call m-me?"
Suddenly the frog looked a bit guilty, "Look, I'm sure you're good looking by whatever standards your kind is used to. It's just that I have never seen your kind before, so to me, you look kind of..."
"N-Not that! T-The other thing!"
The pink frog just tilted his head in slight confusion, "A hero?"
Midoriya's lips started to tremble as tears started to form at the brim of his eyes, "Y-You r-really think so?"
"Are you kidding?!", the frog looked at him in disbelief, "Of Course! You were totally brave and saved me, even when you could've escaped!"
With that Midoriya broke down, gripping his shirt as steady streams of tears started flowing from his tightly closed eyes. He always loved the idea of saving others like All Might, but he was always ridiculed for having that dream because he didn't have a quirk. Yet for once, there was someone who believed what he did was right. Someone who believed that he was a hero.
The other panicked seeing his response, "Whoa man! You alright? I'm sorry if I said something that offended you."
"N-N-No.", Midoriya said with a wet chuckle escaping his throat, "It's just s-something I always wanted to h-hear.
The frog was confused but happy that the other didn't hold any grudges over his comments and stuck a hand out in goodwill, "Well then, I'm Sprig Plantar. What about you stranger? Got a name?"
The green-haired boy took his hand and shook it as he wiped the last of his tears away, "Izuku M-Midoriya." The handshake had left some mucus sticking onto Midoriya's hand, but he took it in stride and wiped it off of the log. Before the two can continue their conversation, Midoriya's stomach grumbled loudly and made him blush in embarrassment.
"S-Sorry, do you have anything to eat?"
"Sure do!", he lifted a piece of rotten bark that had numerous grubs and beetles crawling around it.
With a slight grimace, he corrected him, "Something that isn't bugs...?"
"No bugs huh...?", he raised an eyebrow before eating a beetle-like it was a potato chip. He then left the log to lead Midoriya somewhere, "Come on! We'll have to look around a bit."
Midoriya looked a little skeptical at the command. While he always tried to be kind to others, being quirkless led him to be wary of other people's intentions since they usually led to him being ridiculed and mocked. "How do I know you're telling the t-truth?"
"Aw come on!", Sprig then turned around and made the biggest puppy-eyed expression Midoriya had ever seen. "Does this look like a face that can deceive you?"
Sprig was actually surprised when Midoriya's guarded expression didn't lessen up before the green-haired teen just sighed reluctantly after grabbing his backpack and started to head in front of him. Sprig frowned at the gesture, wondering what made someone doubt others so much. Before running after him in search of some food.
Sometime later, the two were sitting on two tree stumps with a pile of various mushrooms and plants in between them. Midoriya looked at the pile before picking up a purple one and began to look at it thoroughly, taking experimental sniffs and licks before biting into it. He chewed it a bit before smiling at the surprisingly fruity taste, "I-It taste pretty good..."
Sprig gave him a smug smile, "Told you." Before he couldn't contain his excitement and curiosity any longer. "Soo... WHAT ARE YOU AND WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?!"
Midoriya flinched a bit at the shout and swallowed the food that was in his mouth before answer, "I'm a h-human, and I come from another world."
The adventurous amphibian had stars in his eyes, "Wow... Do you know how you got here?"
Midoriya was about to answer that by showing the box that was inside his backpack before stopping himself. This may be his only way back home, and he wasn't sure if could fully trust Sprig yet. Sure, he may have brought him food and called him a hero, but what if it was all an act? Did he really care or was he waiting for him to drop his guard? He wasn't sure, so he decided to hold off showing the box for now.
"I-I don't k-know.", he answered while looking away to avoid looking at Sprig in the eyes and changed the subject, "W-What about you? Why are you in the woods?"
"Proving that I'm responsible!", Sprig said with confidence.
Midoriya just raised an eyebrow at the statement, "H-How is that responsible?"
"Uhhh...", Sprig trailed off unable to answer the real reason he was in the woods.
Midoriya suddenly saw the blue frog with the one shut-eye he saw yesterday pop out of the bushes near them with a shout. "There they are!" And numerous frogs carrying torches, pitchforks, and rope started to surround both him and Sprig. The frogs all ganged up on Midoriya, restraining and tying him up with rope. Sprig tried to stop them but was no match for the town's unified effort. Soon Midoriya was thoroughly wrapped up and tied to the ground with some stakes.
"Well done, Sprig!", Sprig's grandfather croaked next to him with a proud smile, "You caught the monster! I'm impressed."
Sprig only barely heard the praise as he looked at his new companion tied to the ground. His friend's green eyes were wide with fear, but there was also a hint of acceptance. Like he expected to be treated like this either way. Heck, Izuku didn't even look that betrayed when their eyes met with each other, only sad.
Suddenly a giant green praying mantis emerged from the trees, startling the group of frogs and nearly sent them into a panic. Until an extravagantly dressed toad yelled out, "Mantis Formation!" Making all the frogs form a pyramid that was only slightly bigger than the terrifying predator.
The mantis looked at it for a moment before slowly backing away, making Midoriya blink at the scene in confusion. "We did it!", the frogs cheering for the effort before the larger red mantis from before landed with a large crash.
"Nope. That scared it off.", a young tadpole corrected the group.
The predator wasted no time in cutting the pyramid down, making all the frogs scramble for their lives. Midoriya squirmed to escape from the rope tied onto him until he felt them loosen from his arms. Looking up he saw Sprig undoing the last of the rope, before finally sitting upright.
"W-Why did you save me?"
Sprig just gave him a smirk before answering, "You looked like you were asking for help." Before taking out a slingshot from his pocket and telling him, "I'll distract that thing, you get out of here!", and charged in with a battle cry.
Midoriya could only look on at him wide-eyed as Sprig started shooting rocks from his slingshot. Like him earlier, he also could have just left him for his own safety. And yet, he freed him from the rope. Realizing the irony of the situation as they had both saved each other with the same line, he didn't hesitate to follow him into battle. By now Sprig managed to hit the mantis in the eye, causing it to swing its arm at the young frog. However, Midoriya was to grab it by the femur before it could hit him. Midoriya gritted his teeth as he strained and the beast continued to apply pressure, looking the most determined Sprig has ever seen him so far.
"Can you help me?!", Midoriya looked back at the frog who saved him with a flash of blue lighting up his usually green eyes for a split second.
Sprig was too focused on the mantis to notice and quickly grabbed the rope that was used to tie up Midoriya. He ran around the legs of the mantis before hopping around the arms and thorax, tangling the monster. After landing back on the ground, he started to pull on the end of the rope and tightening the mantis so that its arms were pinning itself. Midoriya noticed the plan and started to pull on the rope along with him, trapping the monster and making it fall with a fatal hit on its head.
The other frogs started to cheer once the beast was down for the count, with Sprig and Midoriya having their own celebration.
"We did it!", They both cheered before meeting together for a high-five. Well, Midoriya was going for a high-five. Sprig used his own tongue for the gesture, but Midoriya figured it was a cultural thing and just wiped the spit away.
The other frogs made their way towards them with a smug light green toad looking at the quirkless teen, "Now that that's settled, we should probably run this thing out of town. Let it be someone else's problem." The crowd started to surround Midoriya once more, making him nervous, and started to back away.
Until Sprig jumped in front of him with his arms outstretched, blocking others from harming his new friend once more. "Stop! He's not a monster! He's just lost and needs help!"
Midoriya looked at Sprig in awe, since until this point, no one had ever stepped up for him when it came to others picking on him. He could feel his eyes brim with tears as he gave him a grateful smile.
"Are you crazy?"
"What if it starts eating people?"
Before Midoriya could open his mouth to protest against the claims, he saw an elderly reddish orange-skinned frog with tufts of white coming out from each side of his head wearing a gray-green waistcoat along with a buttoned yellow shirt come out from the crowd.
"Don't worry! I will take care of them!"
The toad narrowed his eyes at the other before throwing his hands off in exasperation, "Fine! Have it your way Hopediah Plantar, but I don't like it. Alright, boys let's move out!" The frog mob left with them grumbling, but not unsatisfied since they got a giant mantis meal out of the event.
"Looks like I'm still causing problems for the family again huh Hop Pop?", Sprig said as he grabbed his arm and looked away from his grandfather.
"Sprig, standing up for this creature against that angry mob was some of the bravest, most responsible things I've ever seen.", Hop Pop said with a proud smile.
"It was also really dumb!", his sister decided to add her own input.
"Yes, really really dumb.", Hop Pop agreed.
Midoriya looked at the banter with a slight smile before making himself known, "W-Well either way thank you, but I think I just need a map before I make my way out of here." He knew this was sort of a bluff since he knew absolutely nothing about this world or what made be lurking, but figured with the new food source Sprig showed him he can survive without being a bother to anyone.
"I don't think so.", the orange frog Midoriya now knows is Hop Pop explains as he pulls out a map, "The valley is surrounded by mountains that are impenetrable this time a year. You are going to have to wait a couple of months before you can leave."
"A couple of months?!", Midoriya panicked as he clutched his green curls. "W-Where am I going to stay?!"
(Later)
…
Turns out Midoriya was going to be living in a basement for the time being. Which he supposed goes with the whole 'monster in the basement' trope that sometimes appears in movies. It's not all bad though, at least he's not sleeping in cramped spaces fighting off monsters every night. There was also food, but it may just be more bugs. He just settled down with the sleeping bag before he saw Sprig jump down with a bunch of plush toys in his hand.
"Hey! Brought some toys to keep you company since I'm too old for these...", the young frog's eyes wandered before grabbing one, "...Except for this one... and this one... and this one too..."
Midoriya looked on with a slight smile. Sprig may have shown bravery in the face of danger, but at the end of the day, he was still just a kid. Which also applied to Midoriya, just a boy trying to survive in this crazy unknown world he was suddenly thrown into.
"I'm glad you are living with us Izuku...", Sprig threw him a reassuring smile.
"T-Thank you for having me here.", Midoriya smiled back, happy to know that at least one person didn't see him as a bother.
With that Sprig left for bed, leaving Midoriya alone with his thoughts as he brought his backpack to his lap and dug out the mystical box. He already tried to see if he could go back when he was out of the woods with little success. He had a lot of questions when it came to the object in his hands. How did it work? Why did it bring him here? Does anyone from this world know about it? And the most important one: Can he go back home?
