Late update, but hope you enjoy it.
It has been a week since Midoriya and Sprig went on their little mushroom hunt, and thankfully there weren't any problems getting back. They were able to put the key into Hop Pop's pocket without any disturbance and were able to breathe a sigh of relief after the deed was done. After that, the week was much more relaxing for the green-haired teen. With Hop Pop and Polly getting used to him not being a threat. (Though Polly did seem disappointed in the fact that Midoriya wasn't even going to try to eat them).
Another thing that he found out was that even if he was a guest in the household, he still had a list of chores to do around the house. Anywhere from doing the dishes to some farm work done alongside with Hop Pop. Not that he minded, since it was the least he could do while he stayed at their house for free.
However, this now takes him to the present, as he nervously gulped at the dish laid out in front of him for breakfast, a grub plastered smack dab in the middle with a side of his mushrooms. He still had a few mushrooms left over from his trip out with Sprig, but he was worried that he wouldn't get the proper nutrients he needed for his body. Since he was pretty sure a person was not made to live on fungi alone.
He steeled his nerves as he slowly picked up the grub while keeping his eyes shut tight, and slowly bit into the bug. Hop pop and Polly looked on with interest while Sprig looked unsure about the outcome. After a few chews, the teen finally swallowed down as the frog family looked on in anticipation.
"It… tastes pretty good."
"Ha! No one can resist the Planter's secret recipe!"
Hop Pop seemed pretty proud of his accomplishment of being able to serve a creature from another world. Sporting a huge grin as he went back to the kitchen to clean up. Midoriya wasn't lying about the taste either, though it helped that he didn't think about the fact that his meal once had legs.
"So what's on the agenda today Hop Pop?", Sprig asked as he took a bit of his own breakfast.
"Well, today I was hoping that we take Midoriya out to see the rest of WartWood. I've been needing to head out to buy so more supplies for our guest here. Besides, it has been a whole week since he's been here and he hasn't gotten into any troubles whatsoever!"
Sprig and Midroiya stopped eating their meals to give each other a knowing look, with Hop Pop being unable to see as his back was turned around. An agreement between the two to not let Hop Pop know of their encounter with the giant lizard.
"And I was thinking you guys could show him around while I do some shopping."
Midoriya didn't dislike the idea, though he was kind of nervous about how the town may react to him. When he first showed up, everyone thought he was a monster that was going to eat them alive. While the Planters were able to adjust to his presence after a while, the town didn't have that luxury. Though the idea of staying in the house the entire stay didn't seem that appealing to him either.
Sprig didn't seem to have any problems with it though, "That sounds like a great idea! We can show him our favorite hangout spots!"
"Just don't get into any trouble now.", Hop Pop warned them while pointing a wooden ladle at them, "This is your first impression towards the town, and I would like for them to get to know Izuku."
While Sprig waved off Hop Pop's concerns with a dutiful nod as he went back to eating his meal, Midoriya couldn't help but worry about his venture out into the town.
The family was soon out of the house, with Hop Pop leaving the frogs with Midoriya as the old frog went off towards the numerous stores that were scattered in town. Which left Sprig, Polly, and Midoriya to wander. Although, Polly certainly had an interesting choice of transportation, as she was all snuggled up in the teen's wild green locks.
"What's the point of carrying around the pail for you if you won't even get in it Polly?!"
"But his hair is soooo fluffy! You should try it Sprig!"
Sprig raised an eyebrow as he reached up to ruffle the hair as well. "Oh my frog! You're right! It's like I'm touching silk."
"G-Guys. I think you should stop. People look are staring at us,"
Sure enough, several of the townsfolks were giving the trio odd looks before Sprig managed to separate with a sheepish chuckle.
"N-Now then, where should we go to?"
Sprig thought about it with a finger on his chin, deciding the best route for them to take before getting an idea. Why settle for one place when they could take him to see everything? With a big grin, he pulled Midoriya's arm to start leading him to the various buildings throughout the small town. With Polly giggling in his hair throughout the entire way.
All the while, Midoriya couldn't help but notice the various reactions of the residents as they witness a small frog drag along a human across the village. They eyed him as he was dragged along while speaking to each other in hushed whispers. He felt like he was back in school again, with everyone talking about the quirkless kid behind his back. Thankfully, he didn't have to deal with them for long before making it to the center of town. With various stores littered throughout the area. They settled on a small shop that sold various supplies and trinkets littered throughout the store, with the trio looking through the various items through the shop before someone else entered.
The stranger who entered was Ivy Sundew, a yellow frog girl with two orange tuffs peeking out from a turquoise hat with ragged patches, frayed overalls, and light green farming clothes. She was sent here on an errand by her mother to retrieve some items for their home when she saw her friend Sprig sorting through various items. Looking past him, she gasped as she saw that there was the beast that she heard rumors about throughout town.
"Hey Sprig!"
The frog paused in his search as he heard his name being called out, turning around to only get his head shoved down on his head to cover his face. He laughed out loud, knowing only one frog who could've done this to him.
"Hey Ivy!"
After he lifted his hat a bit so that it wasn't covering his eyes, he two greeted each other with a high five before sharing a laugh. Happy to see each other.
"So, I heard that you guys were keeping a monster in your house."
"Monster?"
The two frogs looked over to see Midoriya lift a candle towards his hair to let Polly take a sniff, only for her the tadpole to stick her tongue out in disgust. With Midoriya raising an eyebrow in curiosity and taking a sniff at the scented candle as well, only for his face to turn slightly green in before hastily shoving the candle back onto the shelf.
Ivy blinked at the gesture, while Sprig laughed at her surprised expression.
"Yeah, he's about as scary as a butterfly.", he looked between the human and his friend before lighting up, "Do you want to meet him?"
"Are you kidding? Of course!", Ivy then took off towards without another word. While Sprig laughed at her good-natured spirit and followed after her to introduce them to each other.
Unaware of the upcoming stranger, Midoriya continued to sort through various items through the shelves as he listened to Polly's description of each item and its uses. Most were pretty straightforward, but some made him do a double-take a couple of times. Like how some appliances were in the shape of mushrooms and fungus while some glues were held in the shape of bugs. He was so caught up looking through items with Polly that he didn't notice Sprig approach with someone until the stranger called out to him.
"Hello!"
Midoriya yelped as he fumbled a mushroom that he was holding as he heard Polly giggle at his jump. After finally managing to settle his heartbeat so that it didn't feel like it was about to jump out of his chest, he finally looked down to see a yellow frog looking up at him in amazement while Sprig looked at him in slight worry.
"Are you the monster everyone is talking about?"
Midoriya gave a slight grimace. He knew he didn't make much of an impression towards the town after showing up out of nowhere and holing up with the Plantars for a week. He watched as the new frog circled around him, inspecting him as one would do before buying and occasionally poking and prodding his arms and legs. Sprig didn't seem to know what she was doing either, as he shrugged at the teen when their eyes met.
"You are much skinnier than I thought you would be for a monster.", the frog girl said with a tilt of her head.
"Um... T-Thank you?", Midoriya said dumbly as he had no idea how to respond to that statement. The other two chuckled at the display before the yellow frog shot her hand out towards the teen. "Ivy Sundew! Let me be the first to say 'Welcome to a Wartwood!"
Midoriya couldn't help but smile and shake her hand at the gesture, happy to receive a warm welcome from one of the townspeople. Before she shot up with an eager smile as an idea popped into her head. "Hey! Let me get the stuff my mom needs and then I can travel with you guys!" She then shot off to grab a basket before booking it towards the shelves, muttering to herself the items that her mother told her to buy before disappearing to another aisle.
"So... What do you think of Ivy?", Sprig asked curiously as he looked up to Midoriya.
The teen could only look on where the yellow frog disappeared to, never before meeting someone who was quite that hyperactive. "S-She's certainly something."
"Yeah...", Sprig said with a faint blush and sigh that went unnoticed to the human before the pink frog shook his head and grabbed Midoriya's hand to lead him to the front of the store. "We better head to the front and wait for her to finish, it's almost time to head back home."
Midoriya only nodded as he let himself be dragged off by his friend to wait outside for Ivy. As the two waited for Ivy, Midoriya couldn't help but feel nervous about walking towards the middle of town again. Ivy may have been nice to him, but that was only because she was Sprig's friend. He had a feeling that the townspeople weren't going to be as open and accepting of his presence when they went on the move again.
Ivy finally finished her shopping and joined the trio on the venture back to town, where once again the townspeople noticed the presence of the human. Sprig and the others didn't seem to notice, but Midoriya did. He kept his head down as he ignored the stares and tried to listen to his new friends eagerly talk to one another as they headed back toward the Plantars'. Until they heard a cry.
"Help! Somebody stop my snail!"
Looking ahead, they saw a stranger trying to catch up to a snail who was charging ahead at a rapid pace with a panic expression. While Midoriya was surprised by how fast the snail was moving, he was more shocked that it was heading towards three young tadpoles whose eyes widened in fear at the marching mollusk. Sprig's eyes widened at the incident, but was startled when Polly was suddenly shoved into his hands and Midoriya charged forward with an entirely different look in his eyes.
The young frog could see that his new friend was still scared as he charged into the fray, but there was also firm determination to protect those that needed saving. It reminded him of the time when he charged at the giant mantis to fight alongside him. Sprig watched in awe as Midoriya grabbed the three tadpoles tight to his chest as he faced his back towards the charging snail.
Sprig couldn't just stand there watching his friend defend against the mollusk on his own, and judging by the look on Ivy's face she thought the same. They both nodded to each other before rushing in to join the teen in his efforts, with Sprig jumping onto Midoriya's shoulders and Ivy standing on his own, all topped with Polly balancing herself on the yellow frog's head. The combined efforts resulted in a towering figure that broke the snail out of his panic state of mind, causing it to skid just a few centimeters shy of the boy.
After breathing a sigh of relief, the first thing the freckled teen did once he heard that the commotion was settled was to look down at the three tadpoles that were in his arms and try to give them the best smile he could muster to reassure them.
"A-Are you guys ok?"
The three tadpoles in question only looked on in awe as tears were spilled from the brim of their eyes. Surprised to see a random creature try to protect them from the danger that was heading towards them a few seconds earlier. The owner of the runaway snail thanked the frogs for stopping the mollusk from hurting anyone as the townspeople started to gather.
"Whoa..."
"Did you see that?"
"That beast tried to protect them."
Meanwhile, a panicked Hop Pop burst through the crowd with a bundle of groceries in each hand. "What happened?! Are you guys ok!? I can't believe this; I leave you guy alone for one afternoon and you guys are already getting into messes!"
Midoriya winced at the accusation, with Sprig and Ivy moving in to defend his actions. Yet before anyone can say anything, a large light green toad wearing a maroon jacket and a white undershirt stepped forward.
"Now now, there no need to make a fuss Hopediah. Why it's because of the bravery of this creature that the lives of three young tadpoles were saved.", he sported a proud grin towards the boy and he stuck a hand out, "I must admit that we haven't exactly shown our hospitality when it came to welcoming you into Wartwood."
Midoriya was still wary about the newcomer, but reluctantly took the toad's hand as he stood up with the tadpoles still wrapped around his arm. A blue frog with pink hair covering one of her eyes quickly came forward to snatch the three who were in trouble before looking up at the teen in gratitude.
"Thank you for trying to save my sisters. What is your name?"
"I-Izuku Midoriya."
The boy tensed when he felt a hand on his shoulder, but relaxed seeing that it was just the toad from earlier. "Well now, let's give Izuku here a warm welcome to Wartwood!"
The unease and nervousness of Wartwoods' residents immediately dissipated as they all came forward to greet their new visitor, with Midoriya blushing at all the attention put on him. Yet even under all the embarrassment that he was feeling at the moment, he could also feel the knot in his stomach disappear as he was introduced to each new frog that came across him. He soon realized that the looks and whispers from the residents earlier weren't formed from hate or despite, they were just unsure about his intentions.
Despite being away from home and his mother, he thought that maybe he didn't have anything to worry about when it came to staying in Wartwood after all.
