The next day it was time for Ember's second gym battle and the gang were walking to Azalea Town's gym.
"So Ember, do you know what type of gym Azalea Town's gym is?" Misty asked.
"Actually Misty I do, but I don't think you'll like this one." Ember replied.
"Why not?" Misty questioned, confused.
"Because this gym is a Bug-type gym." Ember answered.
Misty began to turn pale, "Oh great! Of all the types it just had to be bug Pokémon!" She cried.
"Rai Raichu Rairai. (There she goes creeping out again.)" Tesla whispered.
"I'm going to feel sorry for the gym leader." Brock whispered.
"Hey Misty, if you want, you can stay at the Pokémon center and not watch the gym battle." Ember offered.
"No way!" Misty shouted, "bugs or not, I don't intend to miss any of your gym battles, Ember."
Then Misty began walking in front of Ember, Tesla, and Brock.
"Is she going to be all right?" Brock asked, concerned.
"I don't know," Ember replied, "but we better keep an eye on her."
Finally they reached Azalea Gym; it was like a giant green house. When they entered the gym, trees and grass was everywhere.
"Wow, this is just like a forest." Brock commented.
"Yeah this reminds me of Viridian Forest back in Kanto." Ember added.
Misty was walking slowly and keeping her eyes open for bug Pokémon. Sure enough, the gang ended up seeing Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, and Kakuna. Misty started to scream when she saw them.
"Oh boy," Ember sighed, "I do hope she doesn't scream while I have my gym battle."
"Hey! Would you stop the screaming please?" A male voice called out.
A boy about thirteen years old, with lavender hair, walked up to the gang. Ember recognized the boy as Bugsy the Azalea Gym Leader.
"Sorry about my friend's screaming. She's afraid of bug Pokémon." Ember apologized.
"If she's afraid of bug Pokémon, then why is she here?" Bugsy asked, confused.
"I'm here to battle the gym leader and she wants to watch me." Ember explained, "and my name is Ember Ketchum."
"I see, well I'm Bugsy the gym leader of Azalea Gym and I accept your challenge, Ember." Bugsy introduced himself and led the gang to the battle arena; it was in the middle of the gym with lots of grass and trees surrounding it.
"Since I use bug Pokémon, I intended to make my gym like a forest, since bug Pokémon love forests." He explained.
"I understand what Bugsy means. Gym leaders like to make their gyms just right for whatever type of Pokémon they use." Brock stated.
Now it was time for the gym battle to begin. Ember and Bugsy got ready to battle on the arena, while Misty, Tesla, and Brock stayed by the side lines to watch. Misty was still looking nervous because of the bug Pokémon.
"This official Pokémon Battle between Bugsy Tsukushi the Azalea Town Gym Leader and Ember Ketchum the Challenger from Pallet Town is about to begin." The referee announced, "Each Trainer may use three Pokémon. A Gym Badge is at stake. Are the trainers ready?"
"Yes."
"I am." Ember said.
"Let the battle begin!" The referee announced.
"I'm going to start off with..." Bugsy held out a Pokéball, "I choose, Spinarak!" He sent out the string spit Pokémon.
"Spinarak!" The Pokémon appeared.
"I choose you, Cinderace!" Ember released her Striker Pokémon.
"Cinder!" Cinderace appeared on the field.
"Spinarak use Poison Sting!" Bugsy ordered.
"Spin Spinarak!" The string spit Pokémon fires poisonous needles towards the Striker Pokémon.
"Dodge it and use Ember, Cinderace." Ember countered.
Cinderace jumped into the air to avoid the Poison Sting and he fired Ember attack.
"Spinarak use String Shot to dodge!" Spinarak fired a string of web towards a tree branch and it avoided the Ember attack. "Now use Night Shade!" It fired a Night Shade attack.
"Protect!" Cinderace brought up a green colored barrier around himself, protecting him the Night Shade attack, "Now use Flamethrower." The Striker Pokémon immediately launches a blast of flames towards the string spit Pokémon.
"Protect!" Spinarak brought up a green barrier around itself. "Electroweb!" The string spit Pokémon fires electricity web toward the Striker Pokémon.
"Protect again!" Cinderace brought up a green colored barrier again, the Electroweb disappeared as it hit the barrier, "Now use Agility and Pyro Ball!" Cinderace disappeared and then reappeared in front of Spinarak and picked up a pebble with his foot and bounced it around and fired its fire attack. The attack hit Spinarak, causing it to fall off the branch and burn its body.
"Spinarak!" Bugsy called out.
Spinarak collapsed onto the ground with swirling eyes.
"Spinarak is unable to battle! Cinderace wins!" The referee announced.
"Great job, Cinderace!" Ember smiled and hugged Cinderace, "You were great."
Cinderace smiled at his trainer's affection and hugged Ember back.
"Spinarak, return." Bugsy returned his unconscious Spinarak.
"Wow, Cinderace was really great." Misty complimented.
"Well, he was trained by Ember's fire type Pokémon. So it makes sense that he's powerful." Brock added.
"Togepriii!" Togepi cheered.
"You've beaten my first Pokémon but this one is going to be a lot harder." Bugsy stated, "Metapod, go!"
"Metapod." The cocoon Pokémon said, appeared.
"A Metapod!?" Brock and Misty exclaimed, shocked.
Ember returned her Striker Pokémon, "I see, a Metapod... Poseidon, I choose you." She sent out the Johto Region Legendary Pokémon.
"Aaauuu~" Poseidon appeared.
Bugsy and referee gaped at the sight of the Legendary Pokémon on the field.
"Dear Arceus, a Lugia. How have you gotten yourself the Legendary Pokémon of Johto?" Bugsy asked, flabbergasted.
"Um, I'll explain after the gym battle." Ember replied.
"Aaauu~~" Poseidon said, ready.
"Okay Metapod, Tackle that Lugia." Bugsy ordered.
"Metapod!" Metapod jumped to Tackle the young diving Pokémon.
"Fast!" Misty gaped.
"I see," Brock said, "Bugsy must've train that Metapod in speed and strength."
"Poseidon, use Gust." Ember ordered.
"Aaauuu!" Poseidon stood up on his legs and flapped his wings, performing a gust of wind towards the cocoon Pokémon.
"Meta Metapod!" Metapod lost its concentration and flew backwards.
"Sunny Day." Poseidon fired a white orb from his mouth into the sky, making the sun shine brighter than before.
"Now Poseidon use Weather Ball." Poseidon opened his mouth and a red-orange ball of fire streaming around it, appeared, he fires it at the cocoon Pokémon.
"Metapod Metapod!" The cocoon Pokémon cried out in pain as the Weather Ball hits it.
"Meta... Metapod..." Metapod was injured from the Weather Ball attack.
"End this with Iron Tail." Ember said.
"Aauu!" The young diving Pokémon tail glowed metallic color and he slammed his tail at the cocoon Pokémon who was sent backwards.
"Metapod!" Bugsy called out.
"Metapod..." Metapod had swirling eyes, knocked out.
"Metapod is unable to battle! Lugia wins!" The referee announced.
"Wow," Misty said, "Even though Poseidon is still young he can actually fight well."
"There's no doubt about that. Baby Pokémon can grow up quicker than you think, Misty." Brock agreed.
Misty nodded, "Yeah."
Bugsy returned his unconscious Metapod, "You're good, Ember. You're the first trainer who lasted to the third round match with me in a long long time. Lucky for me, I've saved the best Pokémon for last." He commented, "The Bug Pokémon Warrior, I choose you Scyther."
"Scyther Scy." The mantis Pokémon appeared.
"Poseidon return." Ember returned her diving Pokémon and took out another Pokéball, "I choose you, Pele!" Ember sent out the fire mouse Pokémon.
"Cyndaquil!" The fire mouse Pokémon appeared ready.
"I had a feeling that you would use a fire type Ember, but I warn you, me and my Pokémon have trained a lot for fire type Pokémon." Bugsy warned.
"Yeah?" Ember said, "Well even if you have, it's not going to stop me from winning this battle."
"Scyther Fury Cutter!" Bugsy ordered.
Scyther got its scythes ready to slash at Pele.
"Quick dodge Pele!" Ember commanded.
Pele managed to dodge Scyther's scythes with ease.
"Now use Flamethrower!"
Pele's flames appeared on his back and then he shot a flamethrower towards Scyther.
"Use Sword Dance Scyther." Bugsy countered.
Scyther crossed its scythes across its chest and then spun round like a spinning top. And when Pele's flamethrower came in contact with Scyther, it just bounced off.
"Wow," Brock gasped, "the way how Scyther spun really fast like a fan repelled the flamethrower."
"But if it still keeps doing that," Misty pointed out, "then Ember will have no chance of winning."
'That technique was good,' Ember thought, 'but I know how to get past that technique.'
"Pele get ready to use Flamethrower again." Ember said.
"Cyndaquil!" Pele nodded.
Bugsy raised an eyebrow, "Again huh? Use Sword Dance Scyther." He said.
"Scyther Scyther Scyther!" The mantis Pokémon spun around again.
"Okay Pele jump right above Scyther, and then use Flamethrower." Ember ordered.
"Cynd Cyndaquil!" Pele ran fast and used his leg strength to jump as high as he can, when he's above Scyther, he immediately opened his mouth and launched a stream of fire towards the mantis Pokémon. Since Pele was using flamethrower from above and not at the side, Scyther's sword dance technique didn't work this time.
"SCYTHER!" The mantis Pokémon cried out in pain as the flames hit it, scorching it as well.
"Now use Tackle to finish it off."
Pele charged towards the mantis Pokémon really fast, the attack hit Scyther in the stomach.
"Scyther..." Scyther collapsed onto the ground with swirling eyes. "... Scy ... Scyther..."
"Scyther is unable to battle," The referee announced, "this match goes to Cyndaquil. Therefore the winner of the gym match is Ember from Pallet Town."
"Yes! We did it!" Ember cheered as she caught Pele.
"Cyndaquil!" Pele smiled.
Tesla, Misty and Brock went up to Ember.
"That was great thinking in that battle, Ember." Misty complimented.
"Yes," Brock agreed, "Both you and your Pokémon were great."
"Rai Raichu! (You were all great!)" Tesla smiled.
Bugsy returned back his unconscious Scyther back to its Pokéball, "Great job Scyther. Take a good rest now." He said and than looked towards the gang. "Ember, I felt for sure that my Scyther would always win against fire type Pokémon," he said, "but after this battle with you, I realize that I still have a lot more training to do." He held out his hand, revealing his badge, "Here, this Hive Badge is yours."
The Hive Badge was a shape of a back of a ladybug, with three spots on it.
"Thank you." Ember smiled and took the badge not before giving a small bow.
"Raichu..." Tesla looked at it.
"Cyndaquil!" Pele smiled.
"I was thrilled of going against your Lugia. Morty will be speechless when he hears about this." Bugsy said.
"Morty?" Misty asked.
"Morty is the gym leader in Ecruteak City," Bugsy replied, "and he studies about legendary Pokémon all the time. So there's no doubt he will be surprised when he realizes you have a legendary Pokémon on your team."
'Poseidon aren't the only legendries I have.' Ember sweat dropped.
She chuckled, "Then I look forward to seeing his surprised face."
Ember and the Azalea Gym Leader shook hands.
"Thanks again Bugsy." Ember said.
"Good luck, Ember." Bugsy said.
After they left the Azalea Gym, the gang went to the Pokémon Center to heal Ember's Pokémon. Once they were healed, Ember sent Poseidon to the corral for some rest from their training. When they left, the gang met Maizie outside the Pokémon center.
"Grandpa sent me to give you guys the special Pokéballs." she said.
She gave Ember her seven Pokéballs. The level ball was black, white and yellow with a red V mark on it. The lure ball was blue, white and red, with three small yellow lines. The moon ball was blue, black and white, with a yellow crescent moon. The friend ball was green and white, with red marks. The love ball was pink and white, with a pink heart. The heavy ball was black and white, with blue bubbles on. The fast ball was red, white and yellow.
"Wow." Ember was thrilled to have one each of different Pokéballs.
Maizie gave Misty her two lure balls and Brock his heavy ball. Maizie also explained that her grandfather hadn't figured out the GS ball yet.
"He promises to tell you immediately once he does found out about it." She said.
The gang thanked Maisy, bid farewell to her.
"Bye!" Maizie waved.
"Bye!" The gang waved back.
Getting her second Johto badge, Ember and her friends left Azalea Town to head for the next city.
