Bubble Guppies Teen Years: Thanksgiving Special
Chapter 2: Problems appear
Thanksgiving Day had arrived. That cold autumn morning marked the beginning of the celebration. Normally that would be a day off for workers and students, but the Bubble Guppies had to get up early. They must get up early to prepare everything they need for dinner that night. The night was important to everyone and everything had to go according to plan. Each family was assigned a task. The Gordons family took it upon themselves to make quite a bit of mashed potatoes. The Gentilella family were in charge of bringing boiled vegetables. The Wahler family made two pumpkin pies (making sure their two children didn't eat it first). The Shaskan family made two apple pies. The Pirruccello family would be in charge of some blackberry tarts, in addition to bringing more boiled vegetables. The Brooks family made a great Green bean casserole. The Lee-Rivers family made cranberry sauce and would bring apple cider and champagne.
Things were going well ... until we remember that the Imani Family had to take care of the turkey. The most important dish at dinner. The problem (which the others did not know) is that Goby's father was unwilling to cook. Goby had decided to go it alone. He managed to get the necessary ingredients and tried to do it alone. The other guppies didn't know about that. In fact, they met to see how each family was doing.
"My dad is coming to dinner. The truth surprised me a lot. I am happy about that" Gil said with a smile.
"I'm happy for you Gilly" Molly answered with a hug.
"I'm honestly worried. My brothers will come ... and you know what that means" Deema crossed her arms.
"Are you talking about your brothers? Don't worry, my brother will keep a good eye on them" Oona calmed her a little.
"Hey Oona! What did Nonny say? Will he be able to arrive tonight?" Zooli asked.
"Yes, he told me he will arrive here. Also, he said it brings a surprise" Oona answered.
"I wonder what he means. We haven't seen him since he left" Gil commented.
"Hey! Anyone know anything about Goby?" Molly asked a little worried.
"He hasn't texted us since yesterday" Urchin analyzed.
"He hasn't even said anything to me" Deema added.
"Mmmm maybe you have to find him, Deema" Oona commented.
"You´re right! He's been upset lately. Maybe I can help him" The blonde girl said with determination.
"You better go soon. Dinner will be tonight. Everything has to go well" Molly ordered. Deema decided to find her boyfriend.
After a while, Deema decided to go to Goby's house to ask how he was doing with the turkey. She came to the house and knocked on the door, but no one opened it. She noted that this was rare for him. More when she saw that the door was open. She entered without making much noise. There was no one in the living room. However, she saw the kitchen and saw a big mess. The kitchen was dirty, there were things on the floor, ingredients scattered everywhere. She saw Goby taking something out of the oven. The bad thing is that it smelled burning. Well, it looks like the turkey that Goby was a mess
"AGH NO NO NO….NOT AGAIN!" He screamed in frustration.
"Goby?" Deema asked, trying to calm him.
"Oh...D..Deema…" Goby was ashamed. He looked elsewhere "W..What are you doing here?"
"I came to see how you were doing with the turkey ... and I see that you are not doing well at all" Deema pointed to the whole kitchen, especially the burnt turkey.
"Oh….yeah" He was disappointed in himself.
"What happened here? Why are you doing it alone?" Deema asked confused.
"Well...My dad broke his tail and he can't help me" Goby confessed.
"Really?! W..Why didn't you tell us anything? Why didn't you tell me anything?" Deema asked, a little bothered.
"Because I wanted to do it alone. This is more important to me than to others" Goby raised his voice tone.
"What?! What are you talking about? Do you want to prove something to us? Is it because of what Gil said yesterday?" Deema was more confused than before.
"Well ... it's something more personal" Goby admitted. He decided to sit with his head down. He knew that he shouldn't keep hiding things from his girlfriend anymore "I wanted to prove to myself that I can make a great Thanksgiving dinner like my mother did"
"Your...mom" Deema was surprised. Her boyfriend never spoke to her in detail about his mother "Goby….I know it's inappropriate but ... you never told me about ... your mom's death. We met her but ... she seemed very healthy ... what happened?" Deema asked. She didn't want to bother him with that kind of question, but maybe it would help her understand her lover's problem.
"I never knew for sure when all that started. I was a child. Neither Dad nor Gabriel bothered to explain. I guess they didn't want me to suffer the truth so quickly. They always told me that mom was sick, but she would soon be cured (sigh) What a big lie" Goby started to remember these times "She suffered from cancer. She never knew when she started, but this disease appears unpredictably and without explanation. For a long time she endured that illness ... until she couldn't take it anymore"
Some years ago
It was a normal day in an elementary school. All the children played non-stop, as it was recess time. We can see a little Goby playing soccer with other children. Our guppy was enjoying his day with his friends, until the news came.
"GOOAALLLL!" Goby screamed with joy as he scored on his game.
"Nice done, Goby!" One of them high-fived him.
"Yohoo!"
"Goby Imani! Someone came to pick you up earlier. It seems that it is urgent" A teacher called him. The boy just went to pick up her things and went with her. When they both left school, it was his older brother, Gabriel, who came to pick him up. Although it did not seem, his face was not very happy
"Oh, Gabriel? Why did you come looking for me? You know that school dismissal time is later" Goby asked confused. Gabriel tried to stay strong in front of his younger brother.
"Bro….We….euh….We have to visit mom" He said with a sad tone. The adult guppy said that before they started driving off together in his car. They both knew that their mother had to go back to the hospital. What they didn't know is that something had happened at the hospital while they were going there.
Finally, both brothers arrived at the hospital and decided to go quickly to the apartment where their mother was. When they arrived they saw the doctor talking to Megan, Gabriel's wife. Quickly, the doctor withdrew and Megan did not look well. Gabriel was the first to quickly approach her while Goby did not understand the situation. He only saw how his brother talked to his wife. Gabriel was very saddened by what she told him. Goby approached them, because he didn't know anything.
"Bro...are you okay? What happened?" Goby asked. Megan ordered her husband with a look. She knew that he deserved to know the truth.
"Goby…..Listen ... you have to be strong. What happens is that ... Mom will not come home anymore ... she has died" Gabriel told him while holding his urge to cry. That was very strong news for the boy. He could not react, that news was as if a bucket of cold water had fallen on him.
"No...No...NO! It is not true! Tell me it's not true!" He started to cry loudly.
"I….I can't lie to you. It's true ... Mrs. Imani ... just passed away" Megan confirmed. Goby did not take it well and entered the room where his mother's body was. When the boy entered he saw his father with red eyes, possibly from crying. Goby quickly hugged his mother's body and cried into her chest
"Mom! MOM! PLEASE! DON´T LEAVE US! DON´T LEAVE MEEEEE!" The boy cried like he never did before. Megan and Gabriel tried to separate him, but Mr. Imani stopped them and let his youngest son pass a few minutes before the doctors processed the body for the family to perform the funeral acts.
Back to the Present
"...I went through a great depression in my childhood. I was never the same again ... although with time I managed to assimilate that situation, it will always hurt ... I'm sorry I didn't tell you before ... Returning to the topic ... My mom's favorite holiday was always Thanksgiving. She always made the day the best. Since she died ... nothing has been the same again. I wanted to feel like Thanksgiving again. Or at least, rescue the legacy of my mother, who has always been the Special Turkey. She always made the best turkey ... and she wanted to teach me how to do it" Goby explained all the situation.
"Goby….I'm really sorry for your loss. It is sad not to see the people you love the most, less on a holiday like this. But ... you are not alone. Your dad, your brother, your sister-in-law and nephews, your best friends and I ... we will always be with you. If you had told me before I would have helped you. I bet the other guppies would have done it too"
"I know. I just wanted to replicate mom's recipe ... if only I knew how to do it" Goby said as he picked up some things and put them in the fridge. He slammed the door and noticed that it caused a piece of paper to fall to the ground. The Afro-descendant boy took the paper and noticed something strange. It was a letter. The first thing he said was "For Goby" and the letter on the letter was his mother's. Without wasting time, he began to read the letter.
"My little Goby. If you are reading this it is because surely I am no longer with you. It's sad to know that I won't be able to see you grow into a big man. But at least I enjoyed seeing you as my baby and enjoying your childhood with me. I want you to know that whatever happens, I will be proud of you.
It seems like I won't be able to keep my Thanksgiving promise, but you know, I always keep my word one way or another. You have to look under my bed for a suitcase. The suitcase is closed with a padlock with a 4-digit numerical code. The code is the date you first ate my Imani's Special Turkey. You are a smart boy and I know that you will discover the answer.
I love you very much
Your mom"
Goby felt a little joy in his heart, although that could not prevent a tear from falling from one of his eyes. Goby decided to take the letter and went to his parents' room without saying anything to Deema.
"Goby...what are you doing? Goby!?" Deema asked desperately.
He entered his father's room without making much noise. Mr. Imani was fast asleep. Silently and stealthily, Goby managed to remove the mysterious suitcase that was hidden under the bed, just as the letter said. Then he went back to the kitchen and showed his girlfriend what he did.
"What is this thing?" She asked confused.
"Look!" Goby showed her the letter. She read it and she was surprised.
"Wow! What do you think she hides in the suitcase?" She asked very excitedly.
"We will know when we open it. I just have to remember that date ... The date I first tried the ... Mom's Special Turkey ... Oh ... Got it!" Goby tried to put a code that could be the password: "1125"
"1125? And what does it mean?" Deema asked.
"November 25th. I remember that date. That was on Thanksgiving Day" Goby explained. The code worked and the lock opened. Goby opened the suitcase and a smile formed on his face when he looked at the contents of the suitcase "Deema….we will make the best turkey in the world! You gonna help?" He smirked to his girlfriend.
"Ohh I love that smile! I´m on! We will save this party!" Deema said very excitedly
