Ember and her friends were in the city of Alto Mare where a water chariot race, called the tour de Alto Mare was taking place. The tour de Alto Mare was a traditional race held annually in Alto Mare, and what competitors did was race through the canals of Alto Mare, riding on floating platforms that would be pulled by their own water Pokémon.
Ember and Misty were entering the race and Brock was going to watch it on the big screen TV, which was shown on the side of a building near the starting point of the race. Ember was using Chomper and Misty was using Corsola. Tesla was with Ember on her shoulder and Brock was taking care of Togepi.
"Testing. Testing." The announcer said, "Ladies and gentlemen, it's a beautiful day for Alto Mare's annual Water Chariot Festival and it looks like we've got a record turnout. Are you ready for the main event?"
The crowd cheered with excitement.
"Trainers, when you hear the Xatu, that'll be your cue."
Three Natu's were standing on top of a Xatu. The three Natu's spread their wings one by one and then Xatu spread out its which meant that the race had started and the competitor's water Pokémon were swimming through the canals like crazy. The people, who were watching the race cheered for the competitors like crazy. Ember and Misty were doing very well and they were all eager to win first place. Another competitor who had a Wailmer, a whale type Pokémon, was going neck and neck with the two trainers.
After going through many twists and turns during the race, Ember, Misty, and the Wailmer trainer were getting near to the finish line. Ember, Misty, and the Wailmer trainer were neck and neck to the finish line, hoping to cross the finish line first. Suddenly an invisible shadow took hold of the rope that Chomper was pulling Ember's floating platform with, and then pulled her fast to the finish line. Ember and Tesla noticed the invisible shadow pulling them along. But before she knew it, she and Chomper crossed over the finish line first and the shadow disappeared.
Ember got congratulated by Misty and the Wailmer trainer and was presented the glass medal as her prize. The medal was a beautiful clear glass medal, with a green tint and green figures that looked like Pokémon and a green circle in the middle. A ribbon came with it as well. Ember decided to have her medallion sent home at once; that way it would be safe at home and not end up broken on her travels.
Then the race was over, the Wailmer trainer, whose name was Ross, offered to give the gang a tour around the city in his gondola. The gang agreed and Ross got his gondola ready for the tour. Soon the gang were riding Ross's gondola and admiring Alto Mare. When they were at the entrance of Alto Mare, where the canals reached the sea, the passed by two big and tall pillars that held a statue each.
"Hey those statues are the same figures on my glass medallion." Ember said.
"Those are known as the guardians of Alto Mare. That's Latios on the left and Latias on the right. Legend has it that they watch over our town and protect us in case of danger." Ross explained.
"Are they just statues or do they really exist?" Brock questioned.
"They say they do." Ross answered.
"Do you think that we'll be able to meet Latios and Latias while we are here?" Misty asked.
"Something tells me that we will." Ember replied.
"Ahh let's not worry about it," Brock assured them, "for now, let's just enjoy sightseeing Alto Mare."
The others agreed with that plan.
At that time Ross had dropped the gang off to where the gang could get some ice cream. Just as the gang were heading towards the ice cream shop, Tesla noticed a water fountain and they wanted a drink from it. But when she got to the water fountain, she saw that there was no one to make the water come out for her. But then someone turned on the water fountain for them. It was a girl with brown hair and wearing a green top and white skirt. Tesla was grateful and started to drink the water at once and then washed herself with it. At that moment, Ember turned up.
"Ah there you are. I was wondering where you ran off to." Ember said.
The girl saw Ember and started to look at her strangely in all directions. Ember and Tesla watched in confusion as the girl started to run off without saying anything.
"Well, that was strange." Ember said.
"Rai." Tesla agreed.
Tesla went back to washing her head with water.
A few minutes later, Tesla sensed that trouble was brewing and started to run to see what was happening. Ember turned off the water fountain and then she followed Tesla.
Ember followed Tesla and saw the girl from before wrapped in a Ariados's webs. Ember recognized the two sisters, Annie and Oakley. Ember and Tesla were not happy with how Annie and Oakley were treating the girl.
"Hey what are you doing?!" Ember demanded.
Then she started to try and get the sticky web off the girl.
"Oh we only wanted to have a chat with her." Annie responded.
"Well this is no way to do it! So leave her alone!" Ember shouted.
"Such pests." Oakley stated.
"Espeon, Psybeam!" Annie ordered.
Ember got hit by the Psybeam and got crossed.
"I can see that you two women are bad news. Tesla, Thunderbolt!" Ember ordered.
Apart from hitting Espeon and Ariados with thunderbolt, Tesla also shocked Annie and Oakley. Then Ember and Tesla ran off with the girl. Annie and Oakley were angry and told their Pokémon to chase after them at once.
Ember, Tesla, and the girl ran as fast as they could to get away from the Pokémon and the two sisters. They ran through many alley ways, twists and turns, over bridges and up and down stairs and the girl helped out too, because she seemed to know exactly where to go.
Thankfully they lost the two sisters and their Pokémon. Then Ember found that they were now back where they started. Ember wanted to ask the girl what had happened, but she disappeared again.
"Tesla, something is going on in this city," Ember said, "I can feel it."
"Raichu." Tesla agreed.
"Something also tells me that we haven't seen the last of those two women." Ember added.
Tesla nodded, which meant she felt it too.
Ember and Tesla met up with Misty and Brock again, and Brock told them that they were now going to visit the museum of Alto Mare.
The museum of Alto Mare was where the pillars, with the statues of Latias and Latios, were and it was a very big place.
"Wow, this place is more like a palace rather than a museum." Misty commented.
Ember and Brock were impressed with the building too.
"It says that this place is actually a temple, but it was made into a museum for tourists." Brock informed them.
When the gang went inside the museum, the gang thought it looked more magnificent inside than outside. They saw fossils of an Aerodactyl and a Kabutops. There were also stained-glass windows dedicated to the legend of Latias and Latios in Alto Mare. But what caught their most attention was some sort of machine, surrounded by metal pillars, standing at the back of the museum.
"What is that thing?" Misty asked, interested in the machine.
"I can answer that question." said a voice.
The voice belonged to an old man, who was the curator of the museum and introduced himself as Lorenzo. He explained that the machine was called the Defense Mechanism of Alto Mare or DMA for short.
"A very long time ago, this temple and the sun tower were built by the ancient people in gratitude for Latios and Latios who protected this city," Lorenzo explained, "and the DMA was also built for peace. But of course, nobody knows how to use it, but this temple and machine has stood here in Alto Mare ever since."
The gang was fascinated by the story.
"Rai?" Tesla pointed at the glass-stained window.
Ember turned to where Tesla was pointing and saw a girl, drawing one of the glass-stained windows. Ember knew that the girl was Bianca and not Latias.
The girl was packing up her easel and other art things and was now leaving the museum. Tesla went off after the girl.
"Tesla!" Ember called out to her Pokémon partner.
"Excuse me." Ember pardoned herself. Then she ran after her Pokémon partner.
"Where's Ember going?" Misty asked.
Brock shrugged, "Don't know."
Ember followed the female electric rodent Pokémon and saw her standing in front of the girl out on a bridge.
The girl blinked in confusion at Tesla in front of her, "Um."
"Sorry," Ember apologized as she picked up Tesla.
"Please keep an eye on your Pokémon, please." The girl requested.
"Sorry once again." Ember apologized, "Hey, why did you disappear from us before?"
The girl looked at her confusingly. "Excuse me but I don't know you and I don't know what you're talking about." she said.
"Oh, sorry then." Ember apologized.
Then the girl continued to walk on. Ember and Tesla continued to follow her but they got lost.
"Where did she go?" Ember asked.
"Rai." Tesla pointed at something.
Ember turned to where Tesla was pointing and saw the girl, who was standing on the bridge.
"Okay, why do you keep disappearing?" Ember asked.
The girl didn't answer, but she signaled Ember and Tesla to follow her and she started to run again. They followed her at once. The girl led them all the way to a vine-covered road and into a dead end. But then she magically walked through a wall. Ember and Tesla couldn't believe with what they saw and bravely walked through the wall too.
The wall led them through a dark passageway and into a huge garden, with trees, bushes, flowers and grass everywhere. There was also a big pond, a big water fountain, stone statues and statues with wind chimes. There were also Pokémon living in the garden; there were Butterfree, Yanma, Oddish, Poliwag and Wooper.
"This garden is amazing." Ember said.
Tesla liked the garden as well. Just then they saw the girl swinging on a swing next to the pond.
Ember was about to go over to her, but then the wind chimes started to move and an invisible shadow burst out of the fountain and started to attack Ember and Tesla.
"That shadow looks like the shadow that helped us win the chariot race." Ember said.
Tesla tried to attack the shadow with thunderbolt, but the shadow tackled her and then charged towards Ember and Tesla again. The two braced themselves for the attack, but then the girl ran out in front of them and stretched out her arms.
The shadow stopped charging and revealed itself. The shadow turned out to be Latios. Ember and Tesla couldn't believe their eyes when they saw Latios. Latios was trying to get the girl to stand aside but the girl refused to.
"What's going on here?" asked a voice.
The same girl from the museum had turned up into the garden. Tesla was surprised seeing that the girl in front of them now and Bianca, holding the easel.
"Sorry about the intrusion." Ember apologized, "I'm Ember and this is Tesla. We followed this girl into the garden and then Latios began attacking us." She explained.
"Oh really?" Bianca asked, "Get them Latios."
Latios was about to attack and then,
"That's enough." A man's voice called out.
Everyone turned to the source of the voice and saw Lorenzo come up to them.
"Bianca, Latios. I'm sure that this girl meant no harm." he said.
"But Grandpa, they were..." Bianca trailed off.
Lorenzo shushed her, "It's alright. You just wanted to play with your new friends right, Latias?"
"Rai? (What, Latias?)" Tesla blinked.
The girl glowed, and then revealed herself to be Latias. Ember and Tesla were speechless.
"I thought there was something strange about you, Latias." Ember admitted.
Latias flew over to Ember and nuzzled her like crazy; apparently, she liked Ember very much. Latios whimpered to Tesla, apologizing for attacking her and her trainer.
"Raichu. (You're forgiven.)" Tesla said.
Then Tesla was riding on Latias's back and would jump onto Latios's back as they flew around the garden.
"My name's Bianca and I'm sorry I almost attack you, Ember." Bianca apologized.
"Ah no problem," Ember assured her, "besides it's really my fault for entering this garden without permission. But I have to ask, why did Latias look like you, Bianca?"
"That's one of her powers. She can take the shape of a human. Since Latias and I are best friends, she transforms into me all the time." Bianca explained.
"I take it that turning invisible is another ability of Latias and Latios right?" Ember asked.
"That's correct young lady." Lorenzo replied.
Latios and Latias helped Tesla land back to her trainer. Then Latios' eyes glowed white and then he dived under the water, and swam through an underwater tunnel which led to the canal of Alto Mare. Latias' eyes started to glow too and then Lorenzo, Bianca, Ember and Tesla were shown a projection image of what Latios was looking at while underwater in the canals.
"Wow, what is this?" Ember asked, amazed.
"Latios has the power to project to us exactly what he's seeing." Bianca replied.
"It's Sight-sharing." Lorenzo added.
"Sight-sharing?" Ember questioned.
"This is a rare privilege, to see through the eyes of Latios." Lorenzo replied.
"I guess it's safe to say that both Latios and Latias really trust you Ember." Bianca stated.
After the sight-sharing was over, Lorenzo and Bianca told Ember of the legend of Latios and Latias, and Alto Mare. There were stone slabs in front of the big water fountain, and they showed pictures of the legend about Latios and Latias. Ember noticed a picture of the same DMA that was in the museum.
"Our ancestors built that machine to bring out the true power of the Soul Dew with the help of Latios and his friends to protect the island." Lorenzo said.
"For some strange reason, it feels like the opposite." Ember commented.
"What are you saying, Ember?" Bianca questioned.
"The soul of a Pokémon shouldn't be used as a weapon. I witnessed firsthand how that turned out." Ember pointed out, remembering how Mewtwo was being used by Giovanni as a weapon, "It should help protect them without that kind of machine. I also have a bad feeling that if in the wrong hands, it could cause disaster."
"I agree as well." Lorenzo agreed.
Then Lorenzo and Bianca showed Ember the Soul Dew, which was in a little fountain in front of the stone slabs.
"I'll tell you something, Ember, that jewel not only contains the spirit of Latios, but also the power, if in the wrong hands, could destroy this town." He turned to Ember, "I want you to promise that you will keep everything that you saw today a secret, and to never tell anyone where the Soul Dew or Latios and Latias are. If word of this gets out, I fear that someone evil may come after Latios and Latias and the Soul Dew."
"I understand your worries, Lorenzo. Don't worry, I'll keep today's events a secret. You have my word." Ember promised.
Lorenzo smiled, knowing that Ember was trustworthy.
Just then Ember realized that it was now time that she and Tesla went back to Misty and Brock, because it was now starting to get late. Latias didn't want Ember to leave because she wanted to play with her some more. But Ember reassured her that she could come back to play with her tomorrow.
Lorenzo had a workshop where he built and repaired gondolas and the workshop was another entrance to the secret garden. Lorenzo and Bianca led Ember and Tesla out of the garden through the work shop.
"Bianca, please escort Ember back to the Pokémon center." Lorenzo requested.
"Okay, grandpa." Bianca accepted.
"Oh, wait a minute, there is something I nearly forgot to tell you earlier." Ember remembered. She told Bianca and Lorenzo about the two bad women who attacked Latias earlier.
"If there are bad people here, then we better take precaution if they're willing to catch Latias or Latios, or worse take the Soul Dew," Lorenzo turned to Bianca, "Bianca, come back here as soon as you can after you take Ember and Tesla to the Pokémon center."
Bianca nodded, "Understood."
As much as Ember wanted to warn them that the two sisters will attack Lorenzo and take Latios and the Soul Dew. Then the two sisters will start up the DMA and try to cause destruction on the city. In order to save the city, Latios will sacrifice himself. She didn't want that to happen. But they'll find it hard to believe. So, she thought of a different plan.
"If it's not too much to ask, Bianca, Lorenzo, could I leave two of my Pokémon with you two?" Ember requested.
"Why?" Lorenzo asked, confused.
"I have a bad feeling that those two women aren't going to give up easily. It would make me feel more at ease that if something does happen, my Pokémon can help." Ember explained.
Bianca seems to ponder for a moment. Then she sighed. "I guess you can. But if nothing bad happens, I'll tell them to go back to you." She spoke.
Ember nodded and let out her two Pokémon, "Cobalt, Houdini!"

Cobalt and Houdini appeared in front of their trainer. "Guys, I need you two to do something for me."
Ember explained the situation with Latias and Latios being hidden in the garden and the two women that are after them. She told them to protect the two legendries along with Bianca and Lorenzo. If something bad happens, Houdini will teleport them to Ember for safety.
Then Bianca, Ember and Tesla left for the Pokémon center in a motor boat.
Ember and Tesla met up with Brock and Misty later. They didn't say anything about being in the garden with Latias and Latios. Instead, they told them that they got lost and then they were able to find the way back to them.
So, they went to the Pokémon center and planned on exploring more of the city tomorrow. Then they went to bed.
It was later that night when Ember felt someone nudging her.
"Raichu! (Ember, wake up!)" Tesla called out.
Ember sat up and rubbed her eyes and saw Bianca, Lorenzo, Latias, Latios, Houdini, and Cobalt in their room. She gasped and got out of her bed, "Are you guys okay?"
Latias flew over to Ember and hugged her. Ember could easily tell that she was a very scared. She rubbed Latias's head, hoping to calm her down.
"Don't worry. We're fine." Bianca assured her.
Soon enough the others also woke up. Misty and Brock were more shocked to see Latias and Latios in the same room with them. Ember explained how she and Tesla ran into each other when they chased after Bianca at the museum.
"What happened after we left?" Ember asked.
"Those two women showed up at the garden. They tried to take Latias and Latios. Luckily Ember's Lucario and Alakazam were there to protect us and teleported us out of there." Lorenzo replied.
"Good job you two." Ember complimented Cobalt and Houdini, who smiled at that and she returned them.
"However, they got the Soul Dew." Bianca said with dread.
"But why were they after Latias and Latios?" Brock questioned.
Lorenzo told them about the Soul Dew and its sad history and the power it possesses. He told them if the Soul Dew is attached to the Defense Mechanism of Alto Mare, anyone using the device can drown the city in water and awaken the Fossil Pokémon, Kabutops and Aerodactyl, in the city museum.
"We have to stop those two." Ember declared.
"Yeah, but how?" Misty questioned.
Then they noticed the metal bars were about to lock up the Pokémon center. Before that happened Ember quickly grabbed her belt of Pokéballs and then she, Tesla, and Latias jumped out of the window and into the canal.
"Ember, what are you doing?" Misty called out.
"We'll head towards where those two women are. Meet us at the garden!" Ember called back.
Brock nodded, "Be careful!"
Latias helped Ember and Tesla onto her back and they headed straight towards the museum.
Ember, Tesla, and Latias were almost at the museum, but then a water twister was heading towards them. They quickly docked on land and ran to the museum on foot, but then they got trapped in a large column of water and the water was choking them. Latias used Safeguard to break the water apart and to save Ember, Tesla and herself. It knocked the wind out of them a bit, but they were okay.
They soon reached the museum. But they stayed out of sight, Ember peeked around the corner and saw the two sisters near the machine. Oakley was already inside and using the controls. Ember knew that they had to think of something fast.
Then Ember spotted the Soul Dew in the stand part of the DMA. She knew that if she possibly held it, it might corrupt even more or worse break into pieces. But she had to take the risk. So she concentrated on the jewel which outlined in light blue and was lifted out of the DMA, shutting it down, preventing Oakley from leaving the machine.
"W-What?" Oakley shuttered, shocked.
Annie blinked in confusion, "What just happened?" Then she noticed the jewel floating away. "Wait Jewel! Come back!" She called out as she ran towards the jewel.
When the jewel went around the corner, she ran after it. Only to ram into something and fall onto her back. She groaned as she placed her hand on her head. The Pokémon ran over to her.
Annie groaned as she sat up, "What did I ran into?" She asked with their Pokémon next to her.
"Trouble." A female voice replied.
Annie and their Pokémon look up and see Ember, Tesla, and Latias, who's carrying the Soul Dew, glaring down at them.
Then Ember released Chomper and he glared angrily at them.
"Chomper, Ice Beam." Ember ordered.
Chomper fired his Ice Beam attack Annie and their Pokémon, encasing them in ice.
"Now stay cool." Ember joked and then she and her Pokémon left the museum.
Soon enough, Ember, Tesla, and Latias made it to the garden when Houdini teleported them there.
"Ember!" Misty called out when she spotted them.
Ember, Tesla, Houdini, and Latias went over to the others.
"You got the Soul Dew back!" Bianca smiled.
Ember nodded and put the Soul Dew back in its original place. She could easily sense that jewel was very weak now since it had been out of the water for too long. So, she took out her ocarina and began to play Lugia's song which enchanted everyone at its mysterious melody. Ember was outlined blue as the jewel gave off a sapphire blue glow.
Everyone but Ember gasped as the jewel glowed along with the water. When the song ended, the glow died and revealed that the jewel was back to normal.
Bianca awed at the Soul Dew, "Wow."
"How did you do that, Ember?" Misty asked.
"What do you mean?" Ember questioned.
"How did you know that Lugia's song would help the Soul Dew?" Brock asked.
"I don't know. For some strange reason, I sensed it." Ember replied as she put the ocarina away.
"Sounds like a good enough answer for now." Misty agreed.
Then Ember saw black spots in her vision and started to fall forward. Luckily Latios caught her in his arms.
"Ember!" Brock and Misty called out.
"Ember, what's wrong?" Bianca looked down at her worriedly.
Ember looked up at everyone around her and they were getting blurry. Then everything went black.
Ember slowly opened her eyes and saw the sun beaming down on her. She noticed that she was in a bed. Then she turned her head to the side and saw Tesla asleep in a chair. Misty and Brock were asleep on the couch with Togepi resting in Misty's arms as Misty rested her head against Brock's shoulder. Ember smiled at them. She was glad to see them.
Then the door opened and Ember saw Lorenzo entered. He soon noticed that Ember was awake.
"Ember, it's good to see you awake." Lorenzo spoke in a low voice so that he wouldn't wake the others.
"Yeah. How long was I asleep?" Ember asked.
"Two days. Everyone was worried about you." Lorenzo replied.
"The Soul Dew. Did it work?" Ember questioned.
Lorenzo nodded, "Yes, it did. Alto Mare is safe now."
"What happened to those two women?" Ember asked.
"Officer Jenny arrested them. Then the G-Men showed up and took them away. They won't be seeing the light of day anytime soon." Lorenzo answered.
Ember nodded, "That's good. How are Latios and Latias?"
"They're both in perfect health." Lorenzo responded.
Ember let out a sigh of relief, "Thank goodness."
At that moment, Tesla woke up and saw her trainer wide awake.
"Raichu! (Ember!)" Tesla cheered as she leaped onto the bed and snuggled against Ember's chest, "Rairai raichu! (You're finally awake!)"
Ember smiled as she petted Tesla. Then Misty, Togepi, and Brock wake up and see that Ember is now awake.
"Ember!" They shouted with relief.
"You're finally awake." Misty smiled.
"Sorry that I worried you all." Ember apologized.
"Try not to do that again." Brock pleaded.
"I don't think I can." Ember admitted, sheepishly.
Everyone chuckled lightly at that.
Later that day, the gang has late breakfast with Bianca and Lorenzo along with their Pokémon in the garden. Soon afterwards, all of the Pokémon were playing with Latias and Latios. Ember also played with them. Then she decided to take a break and walked over to where the others were.
"So you'll be heading out tomorrow?" Lorenzo asked.
"Yeah, we need to get to New Bark Town for Prof. Elm to tells us where the Silver Conference is." Ember explained.
"I see." Lorenzo understood.
Ember turned to Latias and Latios playing with the Pokémon, "I'll miss Latias and Latios though." She smiled sadly.
"I'm pretty sure they'll miss you too." Bianca smiled sadly as well.
Latias flew over and changed into her human form. Then she hugged Ember as Latios stood beside her. Lorenzo stared at the two for a moment.
"You two wish to go with Ember?" Lorenzo realized.
Latias and Latios nodded.
"Is that okay? What will happen to Alto Mare if I take Latias and Latios?" Ember questioned.
"You don't have to worry about that." Lorenzo pointed to the wind chimes and the wind chimes were making a calm noise. "I have studied the chimes sounds all my life, and those chimes are now saying that more Latios and Latias will be arriving here soon."
"So that means Alto Mare will be having new guardians." Bianca smiled happily.
"But are you sure?" Ember asked.
Bianca nodded, "We're sure, Ember. I can easily tell that you'll take good care of Latias and Latios."
Ember blinked in surprised and then smiled softly, "Thank you. Don't worry, I promise I will take good care of them."
Lorenzo handed Ember two light blue and white Pokéballs. "These Pokéballs are called Dive Balls. They're usually used for capturing water Pokémon, but Latias found these some time ago in the canals and she likes them. So you can use these to capture her and Latios."
Ember accepted the two Dive Balls and took out her rotom phone. She sent Lapras and Blastoise back to the lab. Then she held the Dive Balls in front of Latias and Latios.
"Are you two absolutely sure that you wish to come with me?" Ember asked.
Latias transformed back into her Pokémon form. Then Latias and Latios nodded and both tapped the Dive Balls. They were soon sucked into the balls and wiggled for a second. Then they stopped, a successful capture.
"You should also take these as well." Bianca held out two Mega Stones to Ember.
"Are those-" Ember trailed off.
Bianca nodded, "Yes. These are for Latios and Latias. Latios found them around a year ago. Since you have a Key Stone, I figure you should have these."
"Thank you." Ember thanked her.
"You take good care of them Ember." Bianca requested.
"Don't worry, I will." Ember promised.
Later that day, the gang was leaving Alto Mare. Before they left, they said goodbye to Bianca and Lorenzo and left on a boat. While they were sailing away from Alto Mare, Ember and Tesla noticed a Latios and a Latias flying towards Alto Mare. It was clear to Ember and Tesla that they were going to be the new guardians of Alto Mare.
