Raine sped across the sidewalk of a bridge in her wheelchair. Flames were practically rising from her tires, when she had to screech to a stop. Police cars had been parked in front of her, while two roadblocks made sure that she wouldn't cross past them. Even though the lights flashing ominously overhead, Raine didn't feel like giving up in the least bit.
A female cop climbed out of one of the cars, turned on her megaphone, and commanded something through it. However, Raine didn't hear what she said, as she clutched the handrims of her wheelchair tightly, weighing her options in her mind. She looked behind her and was startled to see those two cops, who had found her at her hideout were still tailing her. Even though they had slowed to a jog after they finished clambering up the bridge's stairs, she acknowledged that they put up a great chase by foot.
Raine tapped her fingers nervously. That's when she eyed the gap between the chain-link fencing and the short, concrete walls that lined the bridge. She had crossed by this gap a couple of times during her trips to work at the gas station nearby, but she had never looked at it properly until now.
Luckily, the gap was large enough for a person to fit through. She felt uneasy when she looked through the gap though. It led to a grassy, downhill slope before it met a sidewalk that was connected to some rugged part of the city. Crooked trees surrounded the worn, brick buildings, while dead leaves were strewn all over the place.
Raine shuddered. She had never ventured down there before, because the place creeped her out. Willing to take her chances though, she slowly turned her wheelchair to an angle in preparation to zoom through the gap. She faced the cops and slowly put her hands up halfway first, pretending to surrender to them, before she rapidly put them back down and rushed through the gap. She had done so just before a police car had arrived behind her.
Unfortunately, the hill wasn't as smooth as she'd assumed. She lost control over her wheelchair. Then, one of her fingers snagged on the spokes of her wheelchair, causing her to recoil in pain. There was a big bump near the end of the hill that sent her tumbling out of her heavy wheelchair. The wheelchair flew over Raine's head at an alarmingly close distance, while Raine scraped her shoulder badly against the asphalt. Using the wheelchair's armrest for support, she hopped on her only foot, and got back into her wheelchair.
The two cops who had first found her were treading briskly down the hill now. Raine felt that if she did not get away in time, they were going to arrest her for paying for her wheelchair. With a whoosh, Raine was on the roll again, heading down the unkempt sidewalk. Attempting to lose the cops, she rounded a corner and headed into an alleyway between two, tall, brick buildings. She turned around to see how close the cops were, before she almost ran into the brick wall in front of her. It was a dead end!
Raine jammed her foot into the wheelchair's tire spokes in utter defeat. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks from her beautiful, blue eyes as the reeking stench of garbage made her feel queasy. She tugged at her dark brown hair wildly as she felt that the cruel, brick walls of buildings around her cackled mercilessly as the tall, worn fence in front of her made it impassable. There was nowhere else to go, and the police were approaching too quickly for her to turn around and escape. "No, no, NO! I won't, I won't!" she thought with all her might, "I wish I was somewhere else— anywhere else! I- I don't want to be alone anymore," she finished vehemently. This was it, this was the end for her, here it was and just as the police turned the corner... she felt the air woosh from below her feet.
Raine thought, "That's not possible. The wind only blows side to side; it doesn't blow straight from the ground beneath and up into my hair." Suddenly, Raine felt a gut-wrenching sensation when the asphalt sidewalk disappeared from beneath her feet. From where she was sitting, a big, purple puddle seemed to swirl underneath her feet. When Raine began to struggle moving away from it though, she realized that it wasn't a puddle; it was a hole! Raine thought, "This had to be a sick joke from someone! Please let this be over!" She swung her arms wildly in the air, hoping for something to grab onto, but she grew more distant from the edges of the rough pavement every time. Desperately, she hoped that someone would save her from this, but there wasn't anyone around to stop her fear from coming true. Hopelessly, she tumbled in.
She squeezed her eyes shut in terror, as she expected to have a rough fall into this hole, only to find that she was actually floundering in it. She didn't have to hold her breath, because there was no liquid in there for her to drown in. She floated in the middle of this puddle, before the dark containment lit up again. Swirls of purple danced around her, making her feel dizzy, while she waved her limbs around causing her to look like she was swimming in place. She couldn't move towards any of the purple swirls to check if there were any openings to let her out of here if she was stuck in place! Therefore, Raine shut her eyes and tried calling for help with the little energy she had left. When she opened her eyes, she was looking up, and saw that the hole above her was still open! With a spark of hope, she tried propelling herself towards it, but when the hole started closing, she began panicking and speeding up her movements, but they did nothing to move her any closer towards the opening. Her brown ponytail stopped floating and drooped down beside her, the moment that the hole had closed completely. She could still hear her wheelchair rattling from up there though.
Then, she heard the skirting of rubber boots when the cops turned the corner. An astonished voice from a female gasped, "She- she's gone! There's no way that she could've jumped over that wall. She's a cripple!" That's when the female cop's eyes landed upon the wheelchair. She lifted it off the ground and turned it the right way up. "This has to be her wheelchair," she said aloud, "Search the area!"
"We're dumpster diving for her?" replied her male partner reluctantly.
"Yes!" hollered the female in return, while it sounded like she tossed a cardboard box aside with some old newspapers and trash aside.
"Look," her partner reasoned, "She can't have crawled into a trashcan in-time, if she's a cripple."
"True," responded his partner, who was still digging into the trash, "But she could've been strong enough to vault or push herself in there."
"Uh huh," nodded the male.
Raine heard the female stop tossing trash aside. "Are you doubting me?!" she shouted taken aback.
"No, of course not!" confirmed the man frantically.
During their moment of silence, Raine saw this as her chance to cry for help. She'd willingly go quietly with the cops right now. After a few shouts, it was dismally clear to Raine that they couldn't hear her in here. Unexpectedly, the hole had gotten too dark for her to see in. She hoped that the cops could see this strange hole that she had fallen into, but it was clear to her that they could not when she heard the male officer chuckled, "Well, at least we don't have to chase her down anymore. Ow!" His partner had jabbed him in the side. He laughed, before he caught up with her, as she exited the alley. She frowned, "I swear, if you did this again..."
Raine panicked at the sound of their footsteps fading away. They were leaving! Suddenly, Raine heard a strange noise. She felt herself turning, before the vortex illuminated again, allowing Raine to see the purple swirls around her again. It made her think about what the cops said again. Who did this... again? Had this happened multiple times? What if the cops knew about this strange phenomenon, but acted as if they didn't know in order to keep her calm or prevent themselves from believing in it? What if this was actually a trap that they had set?!
Raine only broke out of her thoughts, when she was suddenly sent sliding down the vortex! This was no longer a hole; it was a tunnel! One end of the portal closed as she could see another one open. Raine found herself zooming airbourne towards the other side at an alarming speed. She closed her eyes, because the moving swirls made her feel sick, but the movement made her feel even worse. She suddenly had a sense that… was this a portal?! That couldn't be possible, could it?!
Raine felt her hair rise, as the air crackled around her, as if it had been electrified. The static crackling gradually got louder, before she heard something else at the end. She began to question, "Am I actually being taken to the afterlife, or am I hallucinating?" She knew that she wasn't dreaming, because when she had toppled off of her wheelchair and into the hole, she had scraped her leg and felt real pain sting her.
Then, she heard a voice at the other end clearly shout, "Someone's coming!" That feminine voice seemed to raise with hope, before the static-charged air dropped its act. The light blue sky with the purple tunnel in the midst of it rumbled like thunder, before Raine plummeted out of it. In midair, she screamed at the top of her lungs, while teardrops flew from the ends of her eyes. "Oof!" cried Raine, when she splattered into a deep mud puddle with all four limbs sprawled out.
"No, unfortunately, it's three limbs," Raine reminded herself. She recalled the appalling tragedy, as she spat out the revolting mud out. More mud trickled down from her hair, as she began to slowly crawl out of the mud puddle. Raine sighed at her misfortune; she was a cripple. In order to save her, her right leg had been amputated, while she was unconscious from the car crash. She was 12 at that time, and it had been four years from then. Shuddering from her worst memory and the bitter chill that seeped through her clothing, she trembled as her limbs throbbed with pain. She had to yank some of the grass, in order to pull herself out of the mud puddle.
Exhausted, she barely managed to stand up, before she subconsciously attempted to sit back down on her wheelchair—which she did not pay for—as that useful item had always which had always been right next to her after she jolted out of it. "Wait!" she realized, "Where is my wheelchair?! How was I able to stand up without any support?" She had already leaned too far back though, and couldn't prevent herself from plummeting into the filth once more. As she tumbled back, she caught a glimpse of… two legs! Raine gawked; it was a miracle! But why were her legs shaped so funky?
Nearby, some kids in the audience that had seen her arrive, snickered at her folly. That was when someone with a familiar voice burst through the crowd, and reprimanded Raine for ruining her nice clothes.
"Never mind her clothes," shrieked another girl, darting to the front of the crowd. This dark-haired girl snorted air out of her nose like an angry bull. Accompanying her features were blood-red eyes, tan skin, and a rigid stature. Slitting her eyes, it was clear the it was this girl who held the leading power in this group. She was the iron-headed leader that kept this group from scattering. The girl pointed and screeched, "Behind you!"
Raine didn't hear the girl from far off, but she felt her instincts caused her to turn around. Raine shrieked when she saw this hideous creature behind her. The rotting corpse of a human groaned as it stumbled, causing more blood to ooze from its recent wounds. Raine shuddered and without thinking, she unsheathed a katana from the scabbard that was strapped to her back. She leapt gracefully into the air, turning as she soared about.
Unexpectedly, she glimpsed into a puddle and saw the change in her appearance. Strangely, her hair color was now black instead of brown, while her eyes were dark brown instead of blue. Secretly, she liked this, because it served as a disguise, in case anyone could recognize her.
Rousing from her thoughts, she landed a powerful blow into the creature's skull. Those who stood by to watch gasped in awe, as the creature toppled in finality. In a split second, the creature's remains began blinking like a light. It blinked once, twice, and thrice, before it burst limb from limb. The remains then flashed brightly, before it vanished.
Raine gasped in utter horror at her act. She attempted to drop the sharp weapon, but it remained stuck to her hands as if it had been super-glued to them. Every attempt to detach the katana from her hands failed, until she decided to sheathe the blade.
Afterwards, Raine put her hands in front of her to find another strange surprise. Instead of her ten fingers, her hands were shaped like a robot's hands with its strange crescent shape. She felt like a LEGO figure with this peculiar, body reshape. Furthermore, she couldn't get enough of her two feet! This was too good for her to believe. She wondered whether she hit her head hard and started dreaming, but when the earlier wounds on her arm stung, she knew that this was real.
Another terrible scream erupted, but this time, it wasn't from the crowd, but from above. The next thing that Raine knew, she was slapped in the face by a mint-green ponytail, which belonged to a new girl who had appeared. Raine had been rammed back in the mud puzzle, and felt practically flattened. Raine blubbered with her face in the mud, "Owww. Gerr off of me pwease!"
The girl understood that Raine wished for her to get off of her immediately. "Oops, sorry!" she squeaked. She leapt off of Raine and by mistake, she had kicked Raine in the back of her head. Raine groaned, saw stars, and face-planted back into the mud. That made the new girl panic even more, and she shrieked shrilly, "Oh no, I'm so sorry! Sorry! Ahhhh, I'm so, SO sorry!"
It took time before Raine got back up and saw that this girl had quite the appealing outfit. On top of her mint-green hair sat a hat that looked like an ice cream cone. Her knee-length dress had a criss-cross plaid pattern with shamrock-green and chocolate brown colors that ran across it, before a frilly, white apron covered the front of her dress.
"Nice catch," sniggered an auburn-haired girl in the crowd that was spectating them. This audacious girl had elaborately decorated hair that was quite a sight to see, even from a distance. Her auburn hair was tied up in a bun, while a braided strand was clipped onto the other side. Cinnamon-colored sparkles ran through her hair, while autumn leaves dappled it here and there.
There wasn't much time to admire any more outfits when the fierce, red-eyed leader from earlier shouted once more, "Look out!" The girl in the plaid dress pivoted around just as Raine got up, and to Raine's agony, that girl's foot caught her face once more, and she was sent sprawling into the mud again, causing the crowd to roar with laughter or to feel sympathy.
Unlike the rest of the crowd, the fierce girl with red eyes and jet-black hair seethed at their stupidity when it came to handling dire situations. Shunting one of the spectators aside, she shouted, "Step aside, juniors!" Without another word, she charged. She saw Raine stagger away from her with a look of fear in her eyes.
Raine presumed that she was going to get slapped by this girl, but that was not the case. Instead, she felt lighter when that girl had lifted something that was equipped to her back.
Cocking the gun that she had taken from Raine, the courageous girl ran towards the hoard of zombies and remarked, "I don't know why they call it a minigun, but this thing sure does more than a miniature amount of damage!" Securing it against her hip, she began firing rapidly at the zombies.
The crowd watched in amazement, as the warrior landed a kick to a shrieking creature's face when it got too close, before she put her last bullet into another creature. Realizing that the gun was empty, Talia landed a kick to a shrieking creature's face, before she used the empty weapon like a sledgehammer to slam the last of the horde to the ground.
Meanwhile, Raine was immersed in her thoughts and didn't seem to have heard the racket that that battle had made. Raine took in her surroundings. There was a baseball stadium directly in front of this vast mud puddle. An icy pond sat to its right with a football field even farther to its right. There were statues of people attempting to defend or run away from horrid creatures, and behind her, there was a bell tower… "Wait, did I just see someone up there?" questioned Raine. She squinted to get a better look, but the humanoid silhouette was gone, so she assumed that it must've been a trick of the bright daylight.
Turning around, Raine saw a school. "Oh no," gasped Raine. It now confirmed where they were. How was this possible?! "How are we in a game?!" shrieked Raine, "This- this is Zombie High School in Roblox!"
