I had no idea how long I had been walking at this point. I was so lost in my embarrassment that I didn't notice any of the turns I'd take down random halls. Before I knew it I was standing in the middle of a library.
"How in the-" I was immediately shushed. Looking around, I noticed the room was fairly devoid of humans except for one other girl. Her hair was in waves and neck length. She had small trinkets laying in the curls as well. It was a gorgeous blue color. She was sitting at a table near the back window of the room. Beside her were about twenty scrolls from the looks of it, all of which were written in different languages.
She seemed to be in her own world, a small smile graced upon her face. Her eyes were a chocolate brown, much nicer than my own. Not wanting to disturb her further, I turned to leave. Unfortunately my clumsy feet ran into the bookshelf beside me. I winced in pain and tried my best not to make too much noise, only for the sound of a rumble to occur in the room. Looking up in horror, I saw the bookshelf begin to teeter back and forth.
Well shit.
I bit my lip as I tried to steady the shelf. My arms were shaking and my shoulders were tense. I kicked off my heels in hopes of steading myself as well but gravity had won against me and it was there that a loud crash could be heard in the room. I sat up wincing in pain, as well as covered in novels. A sigh escaped from my dejected face and a small voice entered my ears.
"Are you alright?" Looking up, the bluenette had reached a hand out to help me up. I didn't even hear her approach. Flushing in embarrassment, I accepted the helping hand and dusted myself off. "Yeah, but my pride is a little wounded." She laughed in response before looking over the mess I had made.
"How bad is the damage Doctor?" I joked trying to lighten up the mood. She looked at me tensely, I could feel a slight amount of sweat develop on my brow. "I might need a second opinion, Ma'am." My eyes widened as I heard the amusement in her voice. "I'm Levy McGarden by the way." I nodded my head in response before introducing myself as well. "Lucy, Lucy Heartfilia." She looked away from me, a sudden pink to her face.
"Nice to meet you…" She looked anywhere in the room except at me. "You..as well.." I felt really awkward. "So um…" She finally turned to me with a flustered expression on her face. "Y-yeah?" I wasn't expecting her sudden outburst that followed. "HAVE YOU EVER READ MY BROKEN HEART BY LIGHTSPEED? BECAUSE YOU LOOK JUST LIKE HOW I IMAGINE THE MAIN PROTAGONIST TO LOOK!"
I nearly jumped out of my skin at her new level of volume. She began to gush about the character, an excited grin on her face. "N-no, I'm sorry-" She suddenly started pulling me around the library in search of the book. "DON'T APOLOGIZE! I KNOW YOU'LL LOVE IT!" She started going through the fiction section, a rambling of sentences escaping her mouth. She started handing me books upon books and before I knew it, gravity had increased by tenfold on me.
"T-thanks.." She beamed at me from around the mountain of books in my hands. "So what's your favorite genre to read?" I was thankful when we finally reached a table to place all of the books she had given me down. "I guess romance stories, mysteries, and dramas are my favorite." I huffed, trying to regain my breath.
"Oh really? I like mysteries too! What about non-fiction? Anything of interest?" Her gaze was intense as she started going through the scrolls she had been reading. "I-I like reading about the knowledge that's known about Klareista." She jumped in excitement at that.
"REALLY?! ME TOO!" She started moving scrolls aside before picking up a few and shoving them into my hands. "These are all about the traditions and holidays native to the kingdom- oh and this one is about the flora and fauna that originated there as well as a bit of information about their climate- oh and this one is my favorite, this one is theory of how the kingdom fell."
This grabbed my attention. Looking over her shoulder, I tried to read some of the words on the parchment but was disappointed to find that it was in a different language. "But wasn't it confirmed that the kingdom fell because their neighboring countries kept trying to invade for their resources and landmass-"
"That's what historians believe really happened, but there are a lot of more promising theories that are way more interesting. For instance, this scroll says the kingdom was burnt to the ground and it's land was never able to flourish again. Mostly because of all the smoke." I looked at her skeptically. "And what's the proof for that theory? No one knows where the modern day of Klareista would've been located."
Levy gave me a playful grin as she looked over more of the scroll. "It says here that a few historians have found genuine ceramics in the basement of a commoner's home. When questioned, the commoner said they had no clue where they had come from or for how long they had been down there for. But the ceramics had burn marks all over them as well as smelt of ash. The commoner's house had no history of catching fire in the past either."
"Seems to be a bit of a stretch don't you think." Levy pouted in response before giving a small shrug. "But that's what makes the theories so much fun." I give a small laugh before looking over the scrolls I could read.
"So what do you think of the competition?" Levy seemed to frown at that. She pondered over the scroll she was looking at for a moment before looking up at me. "I don't want to participate to be honest. In truth, the only reason I agreed to come here was so that I could look over the palace libraries."
"Libraries..as in plural." She nodded a small smile gracing her lips. "What about you Lucy?"
I looked over the books and scrolls around us and sighed. "I don't know… I've made a fool of myself everywhere I turn. If anything I'm grateful I have yet to meet the prince."
"What do you mean?" I looked to Levy, who was now returning all of the books and scrolls back to their proper places. I tilted my head as she returned to the table to gather up more books. "What do you mean, what do I mean?" The question made my heart quicken.
"Well...you were at the dinner weren't you?" I gave a tentative nod as she smiled bitterly. "Lucy...Prince Natsu was there at the dinner...don't you remember?"
I felt the air in my lungs rush out of me. "NO!" My face was bright red as she bit her lip. "Well the Prime Minister was there, you remember him right?" She looked at me with a careful glance, I could only nod...even though I didn't exactly remember much from that night. "Well when the cards were being handed out to us, there was a servant boy standing by the wall. I noticed he had pink hair as well as a strange stance to him… it was much more confident than that of a servant.
"You don't mean-"
"Prince Natsu was there in disguise… I don't know if many of the other girls noticed but he wasn't exactly blending in with his role." I could slowly feel my face turning pale.
"So what you're saying is, not only have I made a fool of myself to the Prime Minister, the other girls here, and the king...but to the prince as well… Why am I still here?" I could feel my face fall on the table. "Why haven't they gotten the royal guards to drag me out of here yet?"
Levy looked over the damaged room for a moment, her eyes staying on the fallen bookshelf from Lucy's grand entrance. "Maybe the prince likes you?" I laughed at that. "Likes me? He doesn't even know me. All he's seen of me is me being a cluts. Not to mention the fact that I don't even know if I want to be apart of this competition-"
The blunette gave a small shrug before patting my head. "Well if you don't want to be a part of the competition then you can always join me in the research of Klareista's disappearance. Lord knows there are more scrolls here than I can count." She gives a small smile towards me and I return it in kind. "-And if you want to participate in the competition then just continue to be you. Besides, what's the worst that could happen? The guy has already seen you drunk." We laughed together at that.
"That's true. Plus if he sees the state of this library and somehow I'm still miraculously here tomorrow morning that has to mean something, right?" Levy gave a hearty nod before looking back at the fallen bookshelf. "We should really get that cleaned up." I turned my head towards the mess and could feel sweat glistening on my brow.
"Can't be too hard, right?" Levy nodded, not moving from her seat. "Yeah, it can't be too hard…" We both just continued to stare for a moment or two before returning to the remaining books and scrolls that had yet to be put away. "Perhaps we should put these away first." I asked while playing with my braided hair. Levy immediately started picking up two or three of the books. "A most excellent idea, no one likes a messy houseguest!"
By the time I got back to my room it was already night. My entire back ached with every step I took from the library. Mira smiled her normal smile towards me as I entered the chamber.
"You look tired Lady Lucy." I only nodded as she started to remove the braids and flowers from my hair. "Would you like for me to draw you a bath?" I nodded again, a sudden pain in my neck forcing me to wince.
"Mira, remind me to never run into a bookshelf again. For as long as I live." She gave me a confused expression before agreeing. "A-alright?" She then exited the chamber into the bathroom that was attached. While she was gone I began to crack my bones, hoping to ease the pain.
A sudden knock from my window entered my ears.
Who in the hell could that be?
Making my way over to the far window, I reached for a parasol that leaned up against the wall. I waited with baited breath for a moment or two before glancing out the window. There wasn't anyone there, but I did notice one of the flower pots had been moved. I threw the parasol onto the carpet and opened the window.
Looking around for a good moment or two, making sure the coast was clear, I then picked up the flower pot. A small piece of parchment fell onto the room. Placing the flower pot back onto the window sill I picked up the parchment.
"Lady Lucy, the bath is ready!" I jumped at Mira's sudden call and turned to face her with a small smile on my face. "Thank you Mira." She returned my smile in kind and made her way over to me. I closed the window sometime during her approach before following her to the bathroom.
I'll just read the note later, for now relaxation time.
Hope you all enjoyed and stay healthy!
