I stood up from in front of my locker and followed Matt and Shay out of the locker room.
I pulled on my turnout gear and put on my fire boots and threw my jacket on and hopped in the truck.
I didn't pay attention to the call, all I heard was "fire" so it was probably a house fire or an apartment building fire.
I was still somewhat angry at Shay for announcing my and Darcy's first miscarriage to everyone, but I knew she was sorry.
Tony halted the truck to a stop behind 81, I hopped out and started to hear Boden barking orders. "51, get 2 lines in; 81 start searching the first floor, Squad; 2nd floor," I pulled my oxygen tank on, and kneeled to the ground to start putting my mask on. "Tony, go with Capp. Cruz, you're with me, search every apartment, and be careful of any collapses," I ordered. They nodded in agreement and we all in sync put our masks and helmets on.
Cruz was following me as I was climbing the stairs. "Fire department, call out!" I yelled. I swore I heard a faint voice coming from the back bedroom. "Cruz! the back bedroom," I said.
He followed closely behind me and helped me pry the door open because it was stuck. I slowly walked in slowly and saw a girl hiding in the corner. She looked scared. I knew at that moment that now that Darcy's pregnant again, I'll be scared for the rest of my life as far as the baby is concerned. "Hey, let's get you out of here," I courageously said.
I knew she didn't want to leave, and her mom and dad were already outside and being treated after Casey and Gallo pulled them out. "Your mom and dad are already outside and being taken care of, you're safe," I said. She grabbed onto me like a leech when I told her that her parents were outside.
I carried her, as Cruz led us out. I sat her on a waiting gurney and walked off with Cruz and pulled our masks off, and our faces were both covered in soot. I took a deep breath, as the paramedics were assessing the girl. I was excited to be a father in a few months and this call shook me a little with the girl hiding out in her bedroom.
I knew once when I and Darcy's child got older, they would be scared about doing things for the first time, but I and her would encourage them. Sylvie and Shay had already taken the mom to Med, another ambo took the dad.
We arrived back at the station after about an hour of doing overhaul back at the scene.
I pulled off my jacket and hung it on the truck, took my turnout pants off, and put my normal work shoes on.
I overheard Gallo and Ritter talking about that this was I and Darcy's 2nd pregnancy and our miscarriage. "Gallo, Ritter, a word?" I heard Herrmann. Herrmann didn't have enough time to shut everyone up about me and Darcy's miscarriage, as it was a tough topic for us to touch on.
I walked into my quarters and pulled my phone from my coat pocket and saw that I got a text from Darcy.
"What's our dinner plans?"
I replied:
"I think we were planning on pizza for tonight, at least that's what Shay said,"
I was working on my report when my phone went off again.
"I'm craving pizza as we speak right now,"
"Of course you are; I need to finish this report I'm doing and I'll see you when I get off shift, love you," I replied
"Love you too, see you when you get home,"
I smiled at her message and set my phone down and started to work on my report.
I heard the door to my quarters opening and saw Casey standing there.
And he was holding up cigars; signaling that he wanted to go out for a smoke break.
"Alright," I chuckled.
I set my pen on top of my folder that contained my report in it.
I followed Matt out, and we walked to the nearby bench.
"So, I see you're staying away from the common area," Matt says as he's lighting his cigar
"It's because if I walk in there; everyone will be quiet. Since Shay brought up our miscarriage; that's all everyone can talk about," I say lighting mine after Matt did
"Herrmann didn't have time to shut everyone about talking about our miscarriage," I added.
"What are you meaning?" Casey asked.
"He knew what it was like to have a miscarriage, as Cindy had one before. He didn't like that it was broadcast in front of everyone, he said he was sorry for our loss," I respond
"Damn, I didn't know Herrmann went through that," Casey somberly said.
"Yeah, it was hard for me and Darcy when we had the miscarriage. We've never told anyone this until now; we're afraid that we'll miscarry again, I just hope we don't, I want Darcy to bring a happy and healthy baby into this world," I say
"Kel, we're all here for you; Me and Shay; even Sylvie, you have a support group behind you," Casey said, resting a hand on my shoulder as I took a puff of my cigar.
We sat there and talked, smoking our cigars.
We walked back inside, and Matt went to the common room and I went back to my quarters to finish my report that needed to be on Boden's desk by the end of shift.
And I hadn't heard any more gossip on me and Darcy, so that meant Herrmann had shut them all up.
And I was glad on that part because I about had enough of gossip and was about to shut them up myself.
I was walking out with Shay after shift, I wasn't planning on going to Molly's tonight. "We still ordering pizza?" Shay asked me
"We were planning on it, Darcy texted me and said she was craving pizza," I chuckled.
"Well, I still want pizza; so pizza it is," Shay said.
I chuckled as we parted ways and got in our separate vehicles.
I pulled up next to the sidewalk in front of Shay's and mine and now Darcy's apartment and got out of my Mustang and grabbed my jump bag and hoisted it over my shoulder and walked in.
I opened the front door and spotted Darcy sitting on the couch, her brunette hair still in the messy bun that I loved.
"Hey you," I said, plopping my jump bag by the front door.
"Hey yourself," she said standing up
"How was shift?" she asked me
"Well, Shay accidentally brought up our miscarriage. I got mad for a part of it and one of the guys related with me on it, and shut the others up about it," I say, pushing a hair out of her face.
"Well, at least one of them related with us on it; and we'll have a support group for this little one," she said, guiding my hands to her bump.
"Matt even said that he would support us; even Shay and Sylvie. So we're both right, this baby will have a support group until they graduate," I say, kissing her temple.
I heard Shay walking in behind us and she sat down her jump bag and walked into the kitchen.
"When are we ordering pizza?" she asked me, as I looked at the time on the clock.
It was only 4:00 in the afternoon, and I couldn't think of the time I would order the pizzas.
"5:30 maybe?" I reasoned.
"Alright, 5:30 it is then," she breathed.
After shift was her time when she went on a walk around our neighborhood, she always did.
Darcy and I would always talk on the phone when we were still long-distance.
But now we weren't which meant we could spend quality time together.
Shay ran upstairs, to get changed into her workout clothes.
"So, what shall we do while she's on her walk/run babe?" Darcy asked me.
"Well, we could cuddle up on the couch... Or go upstairs into bed," I said.
"Hmm, I like the couch better," she said, brushing her fingers down my forearm.
"Alright then, couch it is," I say, taking her hand and leading her to the couch.
A few hours had passed. I already ordered the pizza and we all were already eating.
I was eating and drinking a beer on the kitchen island as Darcy was drinking water and eating her pizza.
Shay had already eaten hers and was already gone off somewhere, probably to Molly's knowing her.
Once I and Darcy finished our pizza, we headed upstairs and she went to my bedroom and I went into the bathroom to take a shower.
I was in the shower for 30 minutes and walked into the bedroom, the towel wrapped around my waist, and saw that Darcy was sitting up in the bed and waiting for me.
I saw her try and attempt to stifle a yawn. I chuckled.
"I know you're tired," I say, reaching for a shirt out of my drawer.
"Alright, you got me. I am tired," she said.
I slipped on my underwear and sweatpants and crawled into bed and wrapped my arms around her without her noticing since she was asleep within a minute.
She had turned her bedside lamp off already so I reached over behind me to turn off mine and we both fell asleep peacefully.
I couldn't stop thinking about what Herrmann said, but at least he related with me on a personal level.
And, the most important thing was that I was thinking about proposing someday soon.
