Author's note: This is my first attempt at a fanfic, it will not be following any conventional story in the Pokémon franchise. I will be taking influence and ideas from various Pokémon games, manga, and the anime to create a unique story from that. There may be lemons or there may not, i haven't decided yet but this will be a mature story and it will get dark and violent at times as a direct result. After the initial introduction scene, the story will mostly be from the perspective of the two main characters, the pokemon more often than his trainer.
for future reference, the following examples of text will indicate different origins of thought and speech as it relates to characters in the story. Pokémon speech will be translated for the main character by the pokemon partner via the Battle AR. I decided to take my own idea to expand on how it works by linking the minds of the human and pokemon partners via thought and empathy link which will will be a recurring theme throughout the story.

The sun was rising on a lakeside house that was home to a young teen named Daniel who would soon be starting his Pokémon journey like so many had before. Unlike his fathers or their friends did, this young man was not planning to take the gym challenge in his native region of Hoenn. The adventures of his fathers and those of their friends ensured everyone in the region knew his name as he grew up, always being compared to the now retired champions of Kalos and Hoenn. Daniel had his eyes set on a a different league in another region where battling was entirely different from what was seen in Hoenn and Kalos: The Iron League of the Ferrum region. His partner had already been received as a young child, a gift from one of his "uncles" in the form of an energetic and determined oshawott, nicknamed Riley by the young boy. The now evolved dewott was the most eager of the pair for their journey to begin.
"Danny, breakfast is ready." a raven-haired trainer in his mid 30's yelled out the back door. Hearing no response he calls out again, repeating the announcement. "You already know he won't hear you Calem, not while they're out doing their thing." His husband replied, a fit and and well tanned man with a swimmer's build and shoulder length brown hair, his emerald eyes meeting an aquamarine gaze as Calem turned around. "They were out all night and have been going at it since dawn. They'll pass out from exhaustion again before they get back if we don't interrupt them." Calem stated, only to get a quick protest from his partner. "Oh no, no no no no no, I am not doing it. Not after the last time, they almost took my head off when I interrupted them." Upon hearing the reaction, Calem sighed. "You're the best suited of the two of us for this. Your pokémon are better trained for that, mine aren't. Send Riri, he can do it no problem." Brendan had to admit Calem had a point, Riri was the best choice of any if their pokemon to bring Danny and Riley back to the house. "All right you win, I'll go tell him to find them and tell them breakfast is ready."
Riley's perspective
"What are you doing Danny? Run away, i'll distract it" We were sparring to practice our battle tactics after camping out overnight, but we had been interrupted by a very angry Shiftry that for some unclear reason had a grudge against trainers and their pokémon. Unfortunately that meant us, and I had to do what i could to keep Danny safe. "I can't do that, i won't leave you alone." Danny and I had been communicating by thought through the link established by his Battle AR. It was this device that was the cornerstone of our training and chosen path as a pokémon team. We decided to forgo the Hoenn league nor had any interest in Kalos. We chose to pursue something quite different, the Iron League of Ferrum. I saw this shiftry as an obstacle to overcome in my training for that goal, but this pokémon wanted only to bring harm to my trainer and myself.
"Danny run, he's after you because you're a trainer. I'll be fine, if I can't beat him we have no hope in Ferrum" It was readying an attack but I knew I was in no condition to stop it. I was too exhausted from our sparring session he'd interrupted and could barely move. He made his move by going for an attack from his left. I tried to block it with my scalchops but it was a feint. He dodged the block and spun around me to the left, hitting me in the back of the head with his right hand. It then jumped back readying a Shadow Ball, the last thing I saw before losing consciousness was it being intercepted with a ball of light.
Danny's perspective
"Riley!" I yelled as my partner was knocked to the floor by the shiftry. Riley couldn't hear me, I got no response even with the Battle AR. When the shiftry readied the shadow ball I thought I was done for, it was aiming for me. When it launched the attack I couldn't even move. Suddenly from out of the trees a ball of light intercepted the attack. I immediately recognized it as Aura Sphere, that meant my father's Lucario was nearby. Riri followed it up with an attack i recognized as Bone Rush and then Dark Pulse, the combined force of both attacks sending the shiftry flying into a tree and then knocking it over. It wasn't moving but it was breathing. I ran over to Riley and picked him up in my arms, he was heavily injured but still alive. I would have begun crying on the spot if not for the presence of Riri, the stalwart jackal assured me he'd be ok but we had to get back home as quickly as we could. In the heat of the moment I forgot I even had Riley's ball and carried him the entire way home.
My parents were standing at the doorway waiting. As soon as they saw me carrying Riley they quickly exchanged looks and ran towards me asking what happened. I barely remember what followed, I was too out of it and worried about my partner and best friend to even think clearly. luckily my dad had a Gardevoir from his journey in Kalos, it used heal pulse on Riley but told us he would still need a lot.of rest. I ate the now cold breakfast but I wasn't very hungry. Whatever appetite I had was gone, I couldn't stop thinking about how useless I was as a trainer. How could I take Riley on a journey to Ferrum if we couldn't even defeat one shiftry? Before I knew it I fell asleep from exhaustion laying my head next to Riley on my...no our bed.
