THE HOMECOMING
"Time to get up, sleepyhead," Candy Bolt says laughingly to her husband, Jeremy, as she hits him gently with her pillow.
Jeremy turns over and moans, "Just five more minutes!"
"Now, we'll have none of that," Candy replies as she grabs the sheet off Jeremy exposing his nude body.
Jeremy tries to grab the sheet to pull back over him. "Candy, what are you doing? You want a free show?" Jeremy yells.
"I'm trying to get you up out of this bed. Have you forgotten that you're suppose to be leaving for Tacoma today? I want you to leave early enough so you'll get there before dark. I don't like the thought of you traveling by yourself at night."
"No, I haven't forgotten. I just don't want to go. I'd rather stay here and let Josh go," Jeremy says as he pulls Candy down in the bed beside him and snuggles up close to her.
"Jeremy, Joshua told you why he doesn't want to go this time. And just what in the world do you think is going to happen by pulling me back in bed? Jeremy, we don't have time for this."
"Come on, Candy, we can make time."
"No, we can't Jeremy. As much as I'd like to, we really can't. Jason is waiting downstairs for you. He says he has something to tell you about that order you're suppose to be picking up."
"Oh, good grief! Can't he wait until we get finished up here," Jeremy snorts.
"Do you really want your brother to know that we're up here enjoying ourselves while we ignore him?"
"Right now, I don't care what he thinks. I want to make love to my beautiful wife," Jeremy says as he begins kissing her on the neck.
"I want that too, Jeremy. Maybe after Jason leaves, we'll have time before you have to leave, " she says as she kisses his cheek.
"Candy! Jeremy!" they hear Jason shout. "I think you need to get down here. Your son seems to have filled his diaper full of, uh well, you know what!"
Jeremy grunts. "Well, so much for that. Go on, while I get some clothes on. I'll be right down."
"All right," Candy says as she gives him a quick kiss, then rises from the bed, smoothing her hair and clothes back in order. "Don't take too long."
"I won't," Jeremy replies as he gets out of bed and heads for the washroom. "Tell Jamie, he has awful timing."
Candy laughs as she heads downstairs.
After receiving his long list of instructions from Jason and eating breakfast, there isn't any time left for Jeremy and Candy to meet back upstairs. Plus, Jamie is wide awake and wants attention from both his parents.
While loading up the wagon, Jeremy asks, "What are your plans for today, Candy? You won't get into any trouble while I'm away, will you?" Jeremy chuckles.
"Jeremy Bolt! You always seem to think I'll do something wrong, if you're not around. Don't you trust me?" she replies with a pout.
"Oh, come on Candy. Of course I trust you. I was just teasing," he says as he walks over and kisses her cheek. "Now, what are your plans for today?"
"Well, I thought I'd take Jamie to the park for a little while. We've been cooped up here at home for the past few days, what with him having the sniffles and all the rain we've been having."
"That sounds good. A little bit of sunshine and fresh air will do you both some good."
Candy replies, "That's what I was thinking, too. We won't stay too long. I don't want to tire him out." She hands him his canteen and a bag of food to take along. "I'm so glad they built the park. Now, if we could only get them to add more benches and maybe some swings for the children to play on."
"Baby steps, Candy. Don't push the council too much or they'll dig their heels in and refuse to budge."
"I know. I'll just have to keep reminding myself not to demand things, only request things with a sweet smile on my face. Oh, I hate playing this game. It's so not me," she fumes.
Jeremy laughs. "Well, I like a sweet smile on that beautiful face of yours." He puts the last of his baggage in the wagon and takes Jamie from Candy. "Now, you be a good boy for your Mama and I'll see you tomorrow." He plants a kiss on Jamie's forehead. "I love you, son." Laying Jamie on top of his gray striped jacket that is in the back of the wagon, Jeremy then takes Candy in his arms. "Remember Candy, if you need anything, just let Jason and Josh know."
"I will, I promise. Oh, I'm going to miss you so much," she says as she slides her arms around his neck. "You be careful and don't worry about us. We'll be fine."
"I know you will, but I can't help but worry, at least just a little," he chuckles as he scrunches up his nose. "I'll miss you. Both of you. I love you," he says as he kisses her lips softly.
"I love you, too. Hurry home."
"You know I will," Jeremy replies as he picks Jamie up and hands him to Candy. Kissing her cheek, he then climbs onto the wagon. He smiles at Candy and heads the wagon down the road.
Candy shouts after him, "Bye Jeremy! I love you!"
She watches as he twists around in his seat, waves, and yells back, "I love you, Candy." She watches until he is out of sight, then turns and goes into the house to prepare for her day.
The next morning as Molly and Christopher are eating breakfast, Molly asks, "Candy, were you here in the kitchen last night? Was something wrong? Couldn't you sleep?"
"No Molly, I had a very sound sleep last night. Why?"
"Oh, I thought I heard you opening the cupboard doors, like you were looking for something."
"I heard that too. And the floor squeaking," Christopher adds.
"I didn't hear anything," Candy says. "I was so tired last night from all the housework, I think I passed out as soon as my head touched the pillow. Maybe you were dreaming. But you both wouldn't have the same dream, now would you?" she laughs trying not to worry the children. "I'm sure it was nothing. You two better hurry or you'll be late." She goes over to the cupboard and checks inside. Noticing some things missing, she decides to make a list of everything that she can remember that may be gone, like some food and two of Jamie's bottles.
After Molly and Christopher have left for school, she checks throughout the house for anymore items that may have gone astray. What she finds is that some of Jamie's dirty clothes, blankets, and diapers that were in the basket next to the backdoor waiting for laundry day, are nowhere to be found. She is puzzled over why anyone would take dirty laundry.
Candy prepares herself and Jamie for a trip into Seattle, so she can talk to Lottie and some others about the intruder she had last night. She also knows she needs to send word to Jason and Joshua, but she'll wait to see what Lottie says first.
As she drives her buggy into Seattle square, there are more people than usual gathered around talking. She sees Lottie, Aaron, Jason, Joshua, and Ben, trying to calm several young upset mothers.
Holding Jamie, she walks up and listens. It seems that she wasn't the only one to have an intruder last night.
Ann Sawdust is complaining that someone has taken some food and some of her baby's clothes and diapers. Canada's wife, Frannie, is missing diapers and bottles. Even Ben says someone broke into his store and took a basket, blankets, milk, and some food.
Candy adds, "Well, we were hit, too. Jamie's dirty clothes, two bottles and some food are missing. Oh, and one of Jamie's stuffed bears. Molly and Christopher heard a noise in the kitchen, but they thought it was me. Thank goodness they didn't go out and look. It's hard telling what the thief would have done to them."
"Candy, are you and the children all right?" Josh asks.
"Yes, we're fine. Just a little rattled. Oh, I wish Jeremy were here," she answers.
"I know, but he'll be back later today," Jason replies.
Ann asks, "Dirty clothes? Why would anyone take dirty clothes?"
"The only reason I can think of is, all of Jamie's clean clothes are upstairs. They didn't want to risk going up the stairs, so they took his dirty ones. They can wash them," Candy answers.
As Ann faces the men in the group she asks, "Well, what do you suggest we do about this?"
"Frankly, I don't know," Aaron says. "We could go out and look for this person, but I don't even know where to start. They're probably long gone by now. I personally think it must have been someone passing through the area and they were desperate for these items to take care of their baby. I doubt if they meant any harm."
"You may be right, Aaron. But ladies, be sure you lock your doors tonight, just to be on the safe side," Jason adds.
"Oh, you can be sure of that. Billy is home now putting locks on all the doors and windows," Ann replies.
Frannie says, "So is Dakota. He says he isn't going to take any more chances."
"Well, we have locks on our doors and windows, but we hardly ever lock them. Guess from here on, I'll be sure they're locked, especially when Jeremy is out of town," Candy states.
"Candy, if Jeremy isn't back by dark, I'm going to come over and wait with you until he returns," Josh says.
"Do you really think that's necessary?" she asks.
"Do you want Jeremy jumping down our throats because someone is not there with you and the children with an intruder on the loose?" Josh chuckles.
"No, I guess it is necessary after all," Candy laughs.
"All right, everyone go on home and live your lives," Jason tells them. "Keep your eyes open for anything strange going on."
Jason takes Jamie from Candy. "My goodness, Jamie. You're getting to be a handful. You keep growing like this and your Uncle Jason will have you up on that mountain chopping down trees before you know it."
"Not if I have anything to say about it, Mr. Bolt," Candy says sternly. "Three lumberjacks in this family is enough."
"And just what is wrong with being a lumberjack?" Jason asks.
"I can answer that question," Aaron replies.
"Now, you stay quiet, Aaron. This doesn't concern you," Jason chuckles. Handing Jamie back to his Mama, Jason tells her, "Here, I think he needs changing again. Josh and I need to get up to the camp."
Candy laughs, "You men are always so big and tough until Jamie's diaper needs changing. Then you're ready to run off and hide."
"Not hiding, dear sister-in-law. Just getting gone as soon as possible," Jason laughs.
"Come on Jamie, let's go into Lottie's and leave all these strong men standing here trembling in their boots," Candy says as she heads inside.
"Candy, I'll check on you before dark and to see if Jeremy is back," Josh calls out to her.
"All right, Josh. See you later."
"Lottie, do you mind if I stay here awhile," Candy asks as she finishes changing Jamie's diaper.
"Candy, you don't need to ask me that, you're always welcome here. Plus, I get to spend time with my grandson. Isn't that right, Jamie?" Lottie says as she takes him from Candy's hands. "Grandma loves her little lumberjack," she laughs.
"Oh, not you too, Lottie. Why does everyone just take it for granted that Jamie will grow up to be a lumberjack?"
"He's a Bolt, isn't he?" Lottie asks. "It's in their blood."
"Well, I'm positive Jeremy would be thrilled if Jamie followed in his footsteps. Me on the other hand, would like for him to be a doctor or a lawyer. But that's a long ways down the road. I have plenty of time to gently persuade him to go in my direction."
"I'm sure you and Jeremy will be happy with whatever he becomes."
Candy sighs, "You're right. I just don't want to worry about him getting hurt up on that mountain. I worry enough about his Daddy as it is."
"I know, but there are perils in just about every job you do. At least around here. Come on, let's go back downstairs. I need to get lunch started for my hungry men that will be expecting a good hearty meal."
As they go downstairs Candy says, "I could help you with lunch. Or tend bar while you're in the kitchen."
Lottie raises an eyebrow, "Candy, are you afraid to go home, what with the break in and all?"
"Maybe not so much afraid, but more like, uh, apprehensive. I just feel like there is more to the break ins than we're aware of. Oh, I'm being silly, I guess. Aaron was probably right. I'll just be glad when Jeremy gets home. He knows how to make me feel better and to forget about all the bad things."
"Yes, I bet he does," Lottie laughs and gives her a wink.
They find a quiet corner for Jamie's basket, but one that they can watch him while they prepare the meal. After a while, Jamie gets fussy so Candy goes over and picks him up, "Hey there sweetheart, I bet you're getting hungry yourself. You probably want to go home, don't you? Well, to be honest with you, I'd rather be at home too. I tell you what. Let's go in the backroom so I can feed and change you. Then let's go to the park for a little while before we head home. I need to get supper started soon. Your Daddy will be hungry when he gets home."
She takes Jamie into the backroom and takes care of his needs.
When she re-emerges into the saloon, the place is starting to fill up with hungry loggers and mill-hands looking for one of Lottie's home cooked meals.
"Lottie, thanks for letting us spend the morning with you, but I think we'll go on over to the park for a while before heading home."
"Are you sure you'll be all right at home? You know you're welcome to stay here," Lottie tells her.
"I know, but I think I'm over it now. Besides, Jeremy will be home later and I want to fix him his favorite meal. I'll be too busy to even think of the break in. I'll see you later."
"All right, Candy. Let me give my little sweetie a hug before you leave." Lottie takes Jamie from Candy and hugs him tightly. "Now you be sure to come back and see Grandma real soon. Grandma loves you, sweetie." She kisses his cheek and puts him in his basket. After giving Candy a hug, she goes back to serving her customers.
Walking over to the park, Candy encounters Helen and Maude who are sitting on a park bench. She rolls her eyes and turns her head, pretending she doesn't see them. She finds a bench in front of a hedge of bushes that will give them some protection from the harsh sunlight. She places the basket on the bench, checks Jamie, and then sits down.
It's not long before she hears Maude ask, "Miss Pruitt, you're not trying to avoid us, are you?"
"No, why would I do that? And as you both well know, my name is Mrs. Bolt now," Candy answers.
"Yes, well, that's debatable," Helen snorts. "I hear you had an intruder last night."
"Yes, I did," Candy responds.
"Well, I am glad you and the children are all right. But you should know, that bad things will continue to happen to you. I believe God is punishing you for your sins."
"Don't you two have somewhere you need to go? Like a book burning or something?" Lottie asks as she walks up to them.
"What? Why I never! You mark my word, young lady. I'm sure I'm right about this!" Helen huffs. "Come along Maude." Candy and Lottie watch as they walk off with their nose stuck up in the air.
"Thank you Lottie, but you didn't need to come to my rescue," Candy says.
"I didn't. I just brought Jamie's stuffed bunny to him. I found it on the floor," Lottie explains. "I couldn't help but put my two cents in when I heard what those two busybodies said to you. Are you all right?"
"I'm fine. No, that's not true. How can they be so cruel?" Candy asks with tears in her eyes as she places the bunny in the basket with Jamie.
"Don't let them get to you. It's in their nature. You know how they like to act so superior to everyone else."
Candy bites on her bottom lip. "Lottie, do you think God is punishing me? You know, for what Jeremy and I did. Was the break in part of my punishment?"
"God isn't punishing you. He doesn't work that way. If he did, why would Ann, Frannie, and Ben be punished too?"
"You're right. He wouldn't punish them for something I did," Candy says. "But still . . ."
"Candy, from here on, just ignore Helen and Maude."
Candy laughs, "That's what Jeremy tells me to do, too. Smile and ignore them."
"Smart man that husband of yours," chuckles Lottie. "Well, I better get back before those men eat me out of house and home." As she turns, her feet get tangled up with a ball that somehow just appears on the scene. Lottie loses her balance and falls to the ground.
"Lottie! Lottie are you all right?" Candy shouts as she springs to her feet to help Lottie.
"Well, I think I am. Just skinned my hands and knees." She sits up and brushes her hands off. "And bruised my ego. I'm so embarrassed," Lottie replies.
Helping Lottie to her feet, she helps brush the dirt off of Lottie's clothes. "Are you sure you're all right?" Candy then picks up the ball and asks, "How did this ball get here? It wasn't here before." She shrugs her shoulders and when she turns around to place the ball on the bench, she notices that Jamie's basket is gone.
"Jamie! Where's Jamie? Oh my God! Lottie, Jamie's gone!" Candy panics.
Forgetting about her skinned hands and knees, Lottie joins Candy in calling for Jamie and looking all around the park. Candy takes off running back to the square shouting for help. Soon just about everyone in town comes to see what is going on.
Aaron grabs her by the shoulders. "What's wrong? What's happened?"
Candy is hysterical now. She tries to tell them, but with her sobbing, they can't understand her.
Lottie rushes up to them. "Aaron, Jamie is missing. We were at the park and Candy took her eyes off him for just a second and he disappeared. Somebody go get Jason and Joshua."
Aaron yells, "Harve! Get up to the Bolt camp and tell Jason what has happened. Tell him to bring every man available. Get going! And hurry!
"Candy, calm down. We'll find him," Aaron tries to soothe her.
"Candy, come with me," Dr. Allyn Wright says as she takes Candy's arm.
"No!" Candy screams. "I have to find my baby!" She tries to run from them, but with Lottie, Aaron, and Allyn holding on to her, she is soon sitting in a chair inside the saloon.
"Please let me go! I have to find Jamie!" she cries.
Lottie sits beside her and wraps her arm around her shoulders. "Honey, we'll find him. Wait till Jason and Joshua get here."
"But that might be too late," Candy sobs. "Don't you understand? They're getting farther away the longer we just sit here." Candy lays her head on the table, then suddenly jumps up.
"Jeremy! Jeremy has to know! I have to find Jeremy!" Then she passes out.
As Jason, Josh, and their men rush into Lottie's, they see an unconscious Candy stretched out on the floor with Allyn checking her vital signs. "What happened? Is she all right?" Jason demands to know.
"Shh," Allyn says. "Give me a second to finish up." She checks Candy's pulse, then turns to Jason. "She's going to be fine. Physically that is. She's overwrought and that caused her to pass out."
Lottie gently wipes Candy's face with a cold wet cloth. "Jason, Joshua, did Harve tell you what happened?"
"I don't understand. Why would someone take a baby from it's mother?" Josh asks.
"Has there been any communication with the kidnapper? A ransom note? Anything?" Jason inquires.
Shaking his head, Aaron answers, "No, nothing. Jason, first the break ins with someone taking baby things and now Jamie missing, well, this doesn't look good."
"My thoughts exactly, Aaron. It looks like someone has been planning this. It's no random act," Jason says.
"Well, at least it seems like they're wanting to take good care of him," Lottie adds. "They took plenty of clothes and diapers and food. Not much milk though."
"Yeah, but old man Jensen said one of his cows went missing too," Ben announces.
"We've got to get going if we intend to find him anytime soon. Men, get whatever you need for an overnight trip. Maybe a two or three day trip. I'm not stopping until we find him," Jason barks.
Candy begins to stir trying to wake up. Opening her eyes slowly to get them to focus, she sees everyone standing around her. "Jeremy," she whispers. "Where's Jeremy?"
Lottie talks softly to her, "Candy, Jeremy isn't back yet."
Candy slowly pushes herself up on her elbows. "Jamie! Has anyone found Jamie?" she cries.
"Candy, how do you feel?" Josh asks as he kneels down beside her.
"I'm fine. It's Jamie you need to worry about. Help me up!" she states. "Jason, why hasn't anyone left to go find my baby?"
"We just got here, Candy. We're getting ready to leave now," Jason answers.
"I'm going with you," she cries as she heads for the door.
"Candy, no you're not!" Jason bellows, grabbing her arm.
"I have to find him and you can't stop me!" Candy declares as she tries to pull away.
"Yes I can and I am!" Jason shouts.
Josh interjects, "Candy, you need to stay here in case they send a ransom note."
"A ransom note? Do you think they'll send one? I don't have much, but I'll give them everything I have. I just want Jamie back," she cries.
"I know you do, Candy. We all do," Jason assures her while he places an arm around her shoulders. "If the kidnapper sends a note and you or Jeremy aren't here to receive it, they might do something drastic. And since Jeremy isn't here yet, that leaves you to stay here just in case. Do you understand?"
Nodding her head, she replies, "Yes, I do, but Jason what do I do if they send a ransom note? I don't know how to deal with this."
"If you get a note, I want you to ring Lottie's bell or the church bell. Or both. Then I want you to fire two shots up into the air. Hopefully, we'll hear it and come back to town. Do you understand?"
Nodding her head again, she states, "Yes, but Jeremy needs to know what's happened. Oh, he is going to be devastated." She starts crying louder. "He's going to hate me."
"Hate you? Candy, this is not your fault," Josh says.
"Yes, it is. One of the last things Jeremy told me was to stay out of trouble while he is gone. And what do I do? I let our house get broken into and I-I-I lose our baby," she sobs. "Maybe Helen was right. God is punishing me." She plops down in a chair at the nearest table and lays her head down and bawls.
"When did Helen tell you that?" Jason asks angrily.
Lottie speaks up. "Candy had taken Jamie to the park earlier. I found Jamie's little bunny and took it over to her. When I arrived, Helen and Maude were giving Candy a hard time. Helen said God is punishing her for her and Jeremy's sins. A little later, Jamie disappears."
Jason and Josh look at each other. "Wait! You don't think. . . you don't think they took Jamie, do you?" Josh asks.
"I don't know, but I'm going to find out right now!" Jason shouts as he storms out of the saloon.
Jason, Josh, and Aaron arrive at Helen's house. Jason starts banging on the door causing the windows to rattle. "Helen! Helen get out here now!" he bellows.
Opening the door, Helen is startled to find the three men standing on her porch with the angriest looks she's ever seen. "Jason? What can I do for you?" Helen asks. Maude walks up beside her.
"You can give Jamie back to his mother, that's what you can do!"
"Jamie? Why. . .Why, I don't have Jamie. Believe me, I didn't even know he was missing," Helen states.
"You expect us to believe you!" Jason yells.
"Jason, calm down. This isn't going to get us anywhere," Aaron says. Turning to Helen he continues, "Helen, shortly after your encounter with Candy in the park, Jamie disappeared. Just vanished."
"And you think we took him?" Maude asks.
"Well, we don't want to accuse you falsely, but yes we thought maybe you did. Do you mind if we come in and look around?" Aaron inquires.
"I most certainly do mind," Helen replies. "Now, if you all will excuse us, we are in the middle of our Bible study." She starts to shut the door when Jason sticks his foot inside to keep the door open.
"Listen here, you old," Jason begins then stops. He shakes his head as he clears his throat. "Listen Helen, Maude. I'm sorry for coming on so strong, but that little boy means the world to us. We just want him back and we'll do whatever it takes to see him reunited with his parents. Candy is so distraught, why she even fainted. Please, if you can help us, we'll be eternally grateful."
"I'm sorry he is missing, but I promise you we had nothing to do with his disappearance. After we left the park, we came straight here to prepare for our Bible study."
Josh asks, "Did you see anyone while you were in the park that you haven't ever seen before? Or on your way here?"
"No, Miss Pruitt and her baby are the only ones we saw," Helen answers.
"We did see that dreadful saloon woman, Helen. Maude adds, "Lottie insulted us."
"I hear you kind of asked for it. You insulted Candy not once, but twice," Jason responds.
"We did no such thing, Jason Bolt," Helen huffs.
"Not acknowledging her and Jeremy's marriage by still calling her Miss Pruitt is one insult. Telling her God is punishing her for having Jamie, is another."
Reverend Adams walks up to the door to see what is going on. "Is there a problem, gentlemen?"
"We thought Helen and Maude might have something that belongs to us, but I guess we were mistaken," Josh explains.
"They thought we stole Jeremy and Candy's baby," Helen informs the Reverend.
"Jamie? Jamie's missing?" Reverend Adams shockingly asks. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Just say a prayer that we find him soon and unharmed," Jason answers. "Sorry to interrupt your Bible study." Jason, Josh, and Aaron turn and hurry back to the saloon.
After stopping off at the Bolt cabin to quickly get their horses and gear and Aaron going home to get the same, they ride to Seattle square where practically every man is ready and waiting to ride.
Dismounting, Jason and Josh hurry to Lottie's porch where Candy, Lottie, Allyn, Biddie, Molly, and Christopher are waiting eagerly for news of their meeting with Helen and Maude. "Sorry, Candy. Nothing. They didn't have anything to do with Jamie's disappearance," Jason informs them.
"Are you sure?" Candy asks desperately.
"Yes, we're sure. Reverend Adams was there doing their Bible study. He would surely see or hear Jamie if he were there," Jason says. "We're leaving now. If we meet Jeremy along the way, we'll tell him whats happened. I'm sure he'll want to see you before he goes out hunting for his son."
"No. You tell him I said to go find Jamie. As much as I need Jeremy with me right now, Jamie needs him more." Candy wipes the tears from her eyes. "Everyone be careful and thank you," she addresses the men.
Jason gives his wife Allyn a goodbye kiss. "Take good care of Candy. Don't let her leave town." He turns and gives the orders, "Let's go men. Let's split up into parties of three or four. We'll cover more ground that way. We'll meet up later."
With tears rolling down her face, Candy says, "Jason, Joshua, please find him. I can't lose him for good."
The women stand with arms connected while the men ride out of Seattle.
"This waiting is getting next to me," Candy says after several hours have passed. "I don't know how much more I can take. Don't you think we should have heard something from the kidnappers by now?" A thought pops into her head and she cries, "Oh no! What if they don't want money! What if they want Jamie! I'll never get him back!"
"Now Candy, you don't know that," Biddie tells her.
Sitting down at the table next to Candy, Lottie takes Candy's hands in hers. "Honey, I know it seems like it's been a long time since Jamie went missing, but really it hasn't been that long. I'm sure we'll hear something soon."
"I don't know Lottie. I'm so afraid we'll never hear from them. I'll never see my baby again. Poor Jamie. And Jeremy, he trusted me to take good care of his son and I failed," Candy cries. "He'll never forgive me."
"Nonsense, Jeremy will not blame you for this. He knows you're an excellent mother who loves Jamie with all her heart. Have faith in him, Candy."
Molly and Christopher begin playing tag in the saloon, chasing each other and knocking a chair over. Candy loses her temper and shouts, "Will you two stop it!"
"Sorry Candy," Molly apologizes. "Can we go outside and play?"
"No! You certainly cannot. I can't be worrying about the two of you on top of worrying about Jamie and Jeremy," Candy says sternly while beginning to bite her nails.
"Candy, would it be all right if I take Molly and Christopher over to my house. I have some games and puzzles to occupy their time," Biddie asks.
"I don't know, Biddie," Candy answers. "Maybe they should stay here."
"Please, Candy," Molly and Christopher beg. "Please."
"Well, I guess it'll be all right. But you two be sure to stay indoors and listen to what Biddie tells you. Promise?" Candy reluctantly gives in.
"We will, we promise. Thanks Candy," Molly says as she hugs Candy.
"Yeah, thanks Candy," Christopher adds as he kisses Candy's cheek. "Come on Biddie, let's go!"
As they get to the door, Molly turns around and runs back to Candy. She gives her another hug and says, "I hope you hear something soon about Jamie. He'll be okay." She runs to the door to catch up with Biddie and Christopher.
"I wish I knew that for certain. And I wonder where Jeremy is," she begins to cry.
Candy props her elbows on the table and rests her head in her hands. Then she sobs.
Being that Jeremy wants to get home as soon as possible to see his wife and son, he decides to take a shortcut up to the logging camp. It's a rougher ride but a shorter route. When he arrives at the camp, he finds it deserted. Saws and axes are laying abandoned next to the trees. He tries to figure out what could have happened that would make everyone leave their equipment just laying where they were working. Checking the tent to be sure there isn't a note for him, he shakes his head. After unhitching the horses from the wagon, he leads them over to the corral and gives them water and feed. I could use something to eat too, but I guess everyone left before cook had a chance to fix anything. Doesn't matter. I know Candy will have something fixed. After all, it is close to suppertime. He jumps on the bareback of one of the horses and rides to his house.
Arriving home, he notices how quiet it is. Molly and Christopher are usually running around making a lot of noise, but now it is only silence. He hurries inside and finds the house dark, quiet, and empty. Now where on earth are Candy and the kids. What's going on around here? Going into the kitchen, it looks like Candy hasn't cooked since breakfast. He grabs a small slab of ham and puts it inside a cold biscuit. He gets back on his horse and rides to the Bolt cabin.
He finds the same thing when he goes inside the cabin. Dark, quiet, and empty. Well, there's only one other place everyone could be. They must all be at Lottie's. Riding into Seattle square, he doesn't see anyone. The streets are deserted. There are at least some lights on in a few places.
Opening the door and seeing Candy and Lottie he says, "Finally! Where is everyone? It's like a ghost town out there," he laughs.
Candy jumps up and runs into Jeremy's arms. "Oh Jeremy. Thank God you're home," she cries while holding tightly to him.
"Candy, I've only been gone one night. Why all the tears? Did you miss me that much?" he chuckles.
"Jeremy, I-I-I," she sobs.
"Something tells me these aren't happy tears. What's wrong?" He hugs her tighter.
Candy has problems telling him with all the sobbing she is doing. "Candy, I can't understand you. Calm down. Come on, sit down," he says as he helps her over to a chair. He sits beside her and takes her hand in his. "Take some deep breaths. That's good. Now what is going on around here?"
"Jeremy, there's no easy way to say it," she says as she wipes her eyes. "Oh Jeremy, something awful has happened."
"I figured that much out. What happened?"
"Jamie. He's. . ." she begins, but Jeremy interrupts her.
"Jamie! Jamie isn't . . .d-d-dead, is he?" Jeremy asks scared to death of a yes answer.
"No, oh no, he's alive," Candy hurries to reassure him.
"Thank God! Is he hurt?" Jeremy asks.
"Not that I'm aware of."
"Then what? If hes alive and not hurt, what else is there?"
"J-J-Jamie, Jamie's missing. He was taken from the park," Candy begins sobbing again.
Jeremy's eyes get larger as he asks, "Missing? You mean he's been kidnapped?"
Candy nods her head. "I'm sorry. It's all my fault." She lays her head down and sobs.
"Lottie," Jeremy asks. "What happened? Who took him?"
"Well Jeremy, Candy took Jamie to the park around lunch time. I found Jamie's little bunny on the floor so I took it over to them. Candy was sitting beside Jamie on the bench while Helen and Maude were being their usual rude selves. I got rid of them fast. We talked for a little while and when I turned to leave, my feet got tangled up with a ball that seemed to appear from nowhere. I fell and Candy jumped up to help me. She got me back on my feet and helped brush the dirt from my clothes."
"Are you all right, Lottie?" Jeremy asks.
"Yes, yes, I'm fine. A couple scrapes and bruises, that's all. Anyways, when Candy turns around she sees that Jamie's basket is gone. We searched everywhere for him. Jeremy, Candy only took her eyes off him for a minute. Please, don't blame her."
"Blame her? Why would I blame her? Candy, I don't blame you," he says as he takes her in his arms. "Helen and Maude! Did they take Jamie?"
"No, Jason checked. They're clean," Lottie answers.
"Well, who then? Has there been a ransom note?" Jeremy demands.
Candy cries, "No, no note."
"So that's where all the men are? Looking for Jamie?"
"Yes. They've been gone for hours. I haven't heard anything," she says as she wipes her eyes. "Jeremy, I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault. Stop blaming yourself. Do you know where the men went? Maybe I can catch up with them," Jeremy states.
"Jeremy, the best thing to do is wait till daylight. You'll do no good roaming around out there in the dark. Go home, get a little rest, and start fresh in the morning," Lottie tells him.
"But Lottie, that's my son that's missing. How can I go home and get a good night's sleep when I don't know where Jamie is?" Jeremy argues.
"Jeremy, can I see you over by the bar?" Lottie asks.
He follows her over and listens while she pours him a shot of whiskey. "I know you'll not sleep much, if any," she whispers. "But I think Candy needs to go home and rest. You're the only one she'll listen to. Allyn almost had her talked into going home until she got a message that the Jackson baby was wanting to come out and meet the world. She had to leave and Candy has been more upset knowing that someone is going to have their baby while hers is missing. Take Candy home. Then if the men aren't back by morning, you can go look for them."
"But. . ." Jeremy starts.
"Jeremy, just look at her. She's exhausted. She's been crying nonstop ever since Jamie disappeared. She needs you too, Jeremy."
He looks at Candy and his heart aches. "All right. But if you hear anything, anything at all, you'll let us know. Won't you?"
"You know I will. I'll come stay with Candy in the morning, so you can leave."
Jeremy nods his head and drinks his whiskey in one gulp. "Thanks, Lottie." He goes over and stoops down beside Candy. Taking her hand he kisses her fingertips. "Candy, let's go home and get a little rest . . ."
"Rest? How can you rest not knowing where Jamie is? Jeremy, I'll go look for him while you sleep," Candy fumes.
"You'll do no such thing. I'm taking you home. I said we'll rest, I didn't say we'll sleep. Candy, you know I want to go look for him right now, but Lottie is right. I can't do anything in the dark. I'll leave early tomorrow morning. Right now, I'm worried about you."
"Me? I'm fine."
"No you're not. Candy, even if you don't need me right now, I need you. I need to be able to hold you and talk to you. Just the two of us. Please," he pleads. "Let's go home."
Candy looks into his teary blue eyes and places her hand on his cheek. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound like you don't care. I know you're hurting just as much as I am. Let's go. I do need you, Jeremy." She takes his face in her hands and kisses his lips tenderly. "I love you."
"I love you, too. Let's go." Rising and helping Candy to her feet, he asks, "Lottie, will you be all right here or do you want to go home with us?"
"Thank you, but you two need to be alone. Besides, I need to stay here just in case a note comes. I'll let you know if it does."
Jeremy nods and says, "Thanks."
As Lottie watches them leave she whispers, "Dear God, please let them hear something soon."
Sitting in the hidden cold, dark root cellar, the kidnapper peeks out from a small crack. Finding it almost dark outside, they turn to look at Jamie who is awake laying in his basket. "Wells, look at ya. Ya finally wakes up. Ya missed all the excitement. It looked like all of Seattle was here lookin' fer ya. But theys so stupid, theys don't look fer a root cellar under the floor. I guess its safe enough fer us ta go up now. Theys won't be comin' back."
They slowly move the trap door and raise their head out the hole. They climb out and going to the windows and doors, look out to be sure no one is about. They go back to pick the basket up and carries it to the table. "Welcome home, little fella. I think yer name is Jamie or somethin' like that, but ya need a new name ta go with ya new home. Let see. What name ya be? Wells, I be thinkin' bout that. No hurry. Ya be here fer now on. Ya can fergit bout that high falootin' Ma ya ust to have. She don't deserve ya anyways. And that no good varmint of a Pa ya had, wells ya fergit bout him too. He ain't never gittin' ya back. This is payback."
Jamie starts to cry so the kidnapper goes back to the root cellar and gathers some of everything they stole the night before, bringing them up and piling them on the table.. Fixing a bottle with the milk, they stick it in his mouth. "I knows this ain't what ya ust to, but ya git ust to it soons enough. An don't pect me ta coddle ya. I ain't inta that. Ya gonna grow up ta be strong and be able ta do fer yerself."
They light a small candle so they can see, but it won't give off enough light to be seen from the outside. Trying to straighten the place up a bit while Jamie takes his bottle, the kidnapper says, "Place ain't as nice as what ya had, but I'll clean it up a bit and ya won't knows the difference."
They open a can of beans and eats them right from the can. "Goods thang ya still a milk baby, cause I can't be having fars. Theys sees the smoke, theys come snoopin' round. No sir, we be roughin' it fer awhile. After thangs die down a bit, then we be able ta do more."
They continue to talk to Jamie while cleaning up the cabin. When bedtime comes, they change Jamie's diaper and puts some warmer clothes on him before putting him down for the night. "Night, little un. Ya know, ya are a might cute little fella, even if ya do favor yer Pa. But that's somethin' ya can't help. I hope ya Ma and Pa are sufferin' over the loss of ya. All them Bolts. Serves em right. Sees ya in the mornin'."
Candy warms up the ham and biscuits. She opens a can of soup and pours it in a pot, setting it on the stove. "I hope you don't mind eating left overs and soup. I just don't feel like fixing a meal tonight," she tells Jeremy.
"Candy, this will be fine," he says. "I'm not hungry anyways." He leans over and kisses her on the cheek. "I'll set the table."
Jeremy then goes and stands looking out the window, but not really seeing anything, his mind being too occupied with more important things. Candy calls him back to the present, "Jeremy, come eat while it's hot."
They hold hands across the table while Jeremy says the blessing. "For this food we're about to receive, let us truly be thankful." He squeezes Candy's hands and opens his eyes to look at Candy. She opens her eyes as he adds, "Lord, we ask that you take care of our little boy. Please let whoever took him, realize what they've done and return him to us unharmed. We just want our Jamie home with us. Thank you for your many blessings. Amen."
Candy wipes her tears away with the handkerchief Jeremy hands her. "I think I'll go lay down. I'm not hungry," she says as she rises from her chair.
Jeremy takes her arm and says, "Candy, please eat something. I'm not hungry either, but I know I have to eat so I'll have the strength to go look for our son. You need to eat so you'll be able to take care of him when I bring him home. Please."
She looks into his eyes and sees the love and worry he has for her and Jamie. "All right, I'll try." She sits down and they eat in silence.
After the dishes are done, she goes upstairs. Walking by the nursery, she notices the door is ajar. Looking in, she sees Jeremy kneeling at Jamie's crib with his hands clutching the rails. His head is bowed and she hears him crying. Should I go to him or let him have this time alone? she wonders. He speaks, "Candy?" as he holds his hand out.
Candy rushes to him and falls to the floor taking him in her arms. "Oh Jeremy, I'm so sorry. Please forgive me," she cries with him.
He wraps her in his arms and they sit there on the floor crying. "There's nothing to forgive. You did nothing wrong."
"But I couldn't protect him. He must wonder what is going on. Where are the people he has depended on to love and take care of him."
"He'll see us again real soon and he won't even remember this time, us not being there with him," Jeremy says.
"You think so?" she asks.
"That's what I have to believe," he answers. "So I'll stay sane."
"Jeremy, when you leave in the morning, I want to go with you," Candy tells him.
Jeremy, looks into her eyes and replies, "I know you do. I wish you could but the truth is Candy, I need you to stay here just in case the kidnapper sends a note or even returns our little boy."
"Returns? You honestly think they would return Jamie to us?"
"I guess it's more of hoping they will return him. I just pray they will see how wrong this is and bring him back home."
"Well, that would be the answer to our prayers, wouldn't it?" she asks. "All right, I'll stay here. For you. . .and Jamie."
"Thank you. You're such a strong beautiful woman and I'm so lucky to have you for my wife and the mother of my child. I love you Candy."
"I love you, too, Jeremy." They wipe each others tears away and share a sweet tender kiss.
"Let's go get a little rest. I have a feeling, tomorrow's going to be a long day," Jeremy says as he helps her from the floor. Arms wrapped around each others waists, they go lay down to rest.
As Jeremy lays back down in the bed, he tries not to wake Candy. He knows how hard it was for her to finally fall asleep and he wants her to get as much sleep as possible.
Candy jerks awake, "Jamie!" she calls out.
"No, Candy. It's only me. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you," Jeremy says as he pulls her close to him and takes her in his arms.
"Jeremy? Jeremy, is there any word about Jamie?" she asks as she clings to him.
"No, nothing."
"Are you coming back to bed? Where were you?"
Jeremy answers, "I couldn't sleep so I packed my gear to take with me. And I checked to be sure there wasn't a note outside."
She asks, "What time is it?"
"It's almost two. Go back to sleep for a little while longer. I'm going to try to get a couple more hours myself."
"Yes, you need to. You have to be worn out from your trip and now you have to leave again. I'm sorry Jeremy," she begins to cry.
"Candy, it's not your fault. You have to stop blaming yourself," he says as he kisses her cheek.
"But if I would have stayed seated and not jumped up to help Lottie, Jamie would still be here with us."
"You did what anyone else would have done. You helped a dear friend in need."
"But. . ." she begins.
"No buts. Lottie needed help and I'm proud of you for helping her. It's not your fault or Lottie's fault. Everything will be okay."
"But Jeremy, what if you can't find him?"
"We'll find him. Don't give up hope. I haven't even started looking yet. I won't stop until I find him. Trust me, okay?"
"I do trust you. I know you'll bring him home," she says as she snuggles closer to him. After a few seconds she whispers, "Jeremy?"
"Hmm?"
"I love you."
Jeremy replies, "I love you, too. Close your eyes and try to sleep."
As Jeremy packs his gear on his horse, Lottie rolls up in her buggy. She has brought a picnic basket and a small knapsack, both full of food. Handing the knapsack to Jeremy she says, "Here, I'm sure Candy fixed you some food to take, so if you can't use this at least give it to Jason and Joshua or someone else. I'm sure they'll take it."
"Thanks Lottie and thanks for coming up here to stay with Candy."
"You're welcome," Lottie answers. "How is Candy this morning?"
"About the same. Still blaming herself. Lottie, I don't know what will happen to her if we can't find Jamie. It scares me to think about it. If I've lost my son, I can't lose my wife too," he tears up.
"Well, we're not going to think that way. I truly believe you'll find him. It may not be today or tomorrow, or even next week. But I know you'll eventually find him. Have faith, Jeremy."
"Thanks Lottie. I'll try," he says as he gives her a hug and a kiss on her cheek.
Candy walks up and greets Lottie. "I'll go inside so you two can have some privacy," Lottie says.
Jeremy wraps his arms around Candy as she gently tugs at his jacket collar. "You take care of yourself while I'm gone. Remember, you need to eat and sleep so you can take care of our son. All right?"
"All right. I'll try. Jeremy, you do the same," Candy tells him.
"I will."
"Promise?" she asks.
"I promise. Do me a favor, will you?"
"Anything, What is it?"
"Say a special prayer. For Jamie and all the men out there looking for him," he says as his eyes mist over.
"I already have, but I promise to keep saying it every morning, noon, and night. Jeremy, I'm going to miss you, but I'm so glad you're going to join the search. I know you won't leave a house unchecked or a stone unturned. Thank you."
Jeremy nods his head, then hugs her tightly. "I'll miss you too. Hope this is a short trip. I love you, Candy."
"I love you too, Jeremy." He covers her mouth with his and tears mingle in with their kiss.
Parting, Jeremy says, "See you soon." He squeezes her hand.
"Soon," she whispers.
Jeremy climbs on his horse, gives her a feeble smile, and heads down the road. Candy goes up on the porch, sits in the swing, and cries.
"Time ta wake up," says the kidnapper to Jamie. "Guess, ya be hungry and needin' yer bottom changed. I'll git ya taken care of, then I need to git busy fixin' this place up. It didn't look this bad when I lived here befer." They change Jamie's diaper and gives him a bottle. "Oh, I thought of a new name fer ya. Hows do ya like the name Zeke? I thinks ya look like a Zeke. Hello there Zeke." They take Jamie's hand and shakes it. "Glad to meets ya, Zeke. I knows we be feelin' like family soon. Nothin' like havin' a family. I had me a family once. That was befer the Bolts took em away frem me. Them Bolts. Theys think theys can do anythin' theys want. So high and mighty. But they nothin' but trash. Pecially that little sawed off runt Pa of yern. Well, I bet he don't feel so high and mighty now. Ah, but ya don't want ta hear bout him. Ya go on and finish ya bottle. I might jest take ya outside fer a spell later."
They begin to hum while they clean, keeping a close watch on Jamie/Zeke.
Early the next morning, Jeremy meets up with some of the men. They're still at their campsite discussing what to do and where to go.
"Jeremy, good to see ya. Sorry to say, we've had no luck, so far. Want some coffee?" says Ben Perkins.
"Yeah, I'd like some, thanks. No leads at all?" Jeremy asks.
"Nothing," Aaron answers. "Jeremy, we're all sorry for what you and Candy are going through. Wish we had some news for you."
"I don't understand it. It's like they just vanished," Jeremy muses as he sips his coffee.
"It's a mystery, all right," Corky replies. "What do you want us to do now? We've looked at every house and old shack from here to Seattle."
"I appreciate what you all have done, leaving your homes and families to help look for my son. I'll understand if you need to return to Seattle. Aaron, you have a mill to run. Has anyone seen Jason and Josh?" Jeremy asks.
"They said they were going to Tacoma to talk to the sheriff. To give him Jamie's description, just in case he shows up there," Aaron tells him.
"I was thinking of going there myself. I want to have some flyers printed up offering a reward for the safe return of Jamie," Jeremy says. "I'll post some in Tacoma and the rest I'll tack up on trees on the way back to Seattle."
"That's a good idea. I'll help by giving some money to the reward fund myself," Aaron offers.
"Thank you Aaron. I'm much obliged," Jeremy says gratefully. "You all go on back to Seattle if you need too. Corky, you take over at the camp. As soon as enough men have returned, get things going again. Oh, and I need someone to go by and tell Candy what my plans are. Tell her we haven't given up and I think a reward might help us find Jamie."
"I'll let her know Jeremy," Aaron volunteers. "Godspeed."
"Thank you." Jeremy climbs back on his horse. "Aaron, tell Candy I love her." He turns his horse towards Tacoma and rides away.
Jeremy rides into Tacoma before noon. He goes straight to the sheriff's office to see if Jason and Josh have been there. While conversing with the sheriff, the brothers walk in.
"We thought that was you we saw going by the hotel. How are you, Jeremy?" Jason asks as he gives him a bearhug.
"Not so good. I'm tired, sleepy, hungry, and worried. That about sums it up," answers Jeremy.
"We were just going to get some lunch, so we can at least help you with the hungry part," Josh grins as he pats Jeremy on the back.
Jeremy nods. "Any news?"
"No, sorry. Not a trace. We gave the sheriff here," he nods over at the sheriff, "Jamie's description. If they come here, he'll find them," Jason replies. "Come on, let's go."
"Wait. Sheriff, where can I get some flyers printed. I want to offer a reward for Jamie's return," Jeremy tells them.
"I guess at the newspaper office. It's across the road from the hotel. That's a smart idea you've come up with. Hopefully, someone will come forward with some news. If I hear anything, I'll be sure to get in touch with you. Good luck," the sheriff responds.
"Thanks. Is it all right if I tack some flyers up around town?" Jeremy inquires.
"Help yourself," says the sheriff.
After they get the flyers printed and tacked up, they go eat lunch where they can sit and talk. "I wonder where he could be? Who has him? Why did they take him? Was he just randomly taken or was he targeted? These questions are driving me crazy," Jeremy tells them.
"I know, Jeremy. We're asking ourselves the same questions," Jason says.
"It doesn't look good for there not to be a ransom note. I'm afraid they don't want money. They want to keep Jamie," Jeremy says as his eyes fill with tears. "That will destroy Candy."
"How was Candy when you left?" Josh asks.
"Not good. She blames herself for Jamie's disappearance."
"But she's not responsible," Josh says.
"Well, I know that and you know that. Everyone knows it, except Candy. I'm afraid if we don't find him and find him soon, that she'll never recover," Jeremy replies.
"We'll just have to find him then," Jason says. "Let's finish up here and get going. Times a wastin'."
After several more days of searching for Jamie, Jason decides it's time to head back to Seattle. "But Jason, I can't give up. I can't stop looking. I can't let him down. And Candy? I can't let her down either," Jeremy groans.
"I'm not telling you to give up, Jeremy. I know you'll never give up. And neither will we. But we need to go home and rest. We'll regroup and in a few days, we'll start again," Jason says.
"But, I promised Candy I'd bring Jamie home. I don't want to," he stops to gather his thoughts. "I don't want to see the disappointment in her eyes."
"Jeremy, I think you need to go home and let Candy take care of you," Josh tells him. "You're worn out."
"I'm not sick! I don't need to be taken care of. All I need is to bring Jamie home to his Mama," Jeremy shouts.
"I think Josh is right," Jason says. "Jeremy, you've been going non-stop ever since you found out about Jamie. Now I know you want to continue the search, we all do. But there comes a time when you have to stop and think about what you're doing to yourself. You're not going to be any good to Jamie or anyone else, if you continue on like this. You're going home. We all are."
"But. . ."
"No buts about it. You're going home!" Jason says loudly and sternly.
"All right, but Candy will never forgive me for this," Jeremy says mournfully.
"Yes, she will. She'll understand," Jason tells him.
"But I still have some flyers I need to put up," Jeremy protests.
"Let me have them. You and Jason go on home. I'll finish putting these up for you." Josh takes the flyers, a small hammer, and some tacks from Jeremy. "I'll see you soon."
"All right. Let's go," Jason says.
Jeremy and Jason arrive home to find Lottie sitting in the porch swing. "Where's Candy?" Jeremy asks.
"Where she usually is," Lottie answers as she points down to the water's edge. "She says she can't stand it in the house. Everything reminds her of Jamie. I take it, you didn't find him."
"No, we didn't," replies Jason as him and Jeremy dismount. "We thought we better come home and rest up before going out to search again."
"I need to go see Candy," Jeremy says. "Thanks Jason. And you too Lottie." He slowly begins to descend the small incline to the water.
"Candy," Jeremy says a little above a whisper, when he reaches her.
Candy jumps as she is startled. "Jeremy? Jeremy, did you find him?" she asks anxiously.
Tears form in his eyes as he sits down beside her. He takes her hand and squeezes it. "I'm sorry, Candy. I tried. I tried so damn hard and I couldn't find him."
"Are you giving up?" she asks.
"I'll never give up. Jason just thought we should all come home and rest up before continuing our search. We're all pretty worn out."
"Oh, I see," Candy says as she bites on her lip.
"Candy really, I promise I'll go back out and search for him just as soon as I get a little rest." He brings her hand up to his lips and kisses her fingertips. "Can we go up to the house? I'd like to get something to eat and lay down for awhile."
"Of course. Now that you're home, maybe I can at least take care of you, since I didn't take care of our baby." She stands as her tears fall.
Jeremy stands and takes her in his arms. "Candy, you have to stop blaming yourself. It's not your fault. You're the best mother that God ever put on this earth." Jeremy kisses the top of her head. "Come on, let's go home."
"Guess what Zeke? We're gonna go outside fer a little bit. Ya like that? Ya need some of that there sunshine. Whys yer white as snow. We git ya lookin' like a trapper, yet." They pick up Jamie's basket and carries it outside setting it on the porch. "We start outs here and moves ya in the sun slowly. Don't want ya turnin' inta a beet," they laugh.
"How's ya likin' ya new home? I like havin' ya here. Ya are a lot of company. It was too lonesome here all by meself. I ust ta live here with me two boys. How I miss'em," they muse. Shaking their head, they come back to the present. "Theys were good boys. Oh shore, they'd get into mischief ever now and then. But yer Pa and them two brothers of his, tookem away frem me. All's us had to go to that there big jail in Olympia. Only two of us git to walk out. Me youngest boy, they hanged. He did wrong, but he didn't have ta hang. Me oldest boy, he said he didn't want nothin' ta do with me. Goin' somewhere else where nobody knowed em. Make a new start fer hisself, that's what he said. Well, we see how long it takes em fer he realizes he needs me." They wipe their eyes. "I pect em ta come home any day now."
Getting up, they move Jamie out into the sun. "Yep, that Pa of yern ain't nothin' but trouble. He ust ta play with Junior when theys were little thangs. Junior is me youngest boy. Yer Pa stuttered somethin' awful. But we didn't care. We liked em okay. Then he grows up and thinks he better than the rest of us. Jest like them brothers of his. Nows that he has hisself a high falootin' woman, he looks down his nose at us that ust ta be his friends. Hey, yous ain't gonna stutter, are ya? Don't matter. It's jest yous and me and Eben when he gits here. Eben is me oldest boy. The one that left me. He'll be back. He can't make it without his Ma."
A couple days later, Jeremy awakens to find Candy packing her bag. Wiping the sleep from his eyes he asks, "Candy? What are you doing? Where you going?"
"I'm sorry Jeremy. I didn't mean to wake you. Go on back to sleep," she answers.
"Sleep? Candy, not until you tell me what's going on." He sees a letter laying on her pillow. Picking it up he asks, "What's this?" He begins to read it.
My dearest Jeremy,
Please forgive me, but this is something I have to do. Do for you and Jamie. I love you both so much and I can't go on keeping you apart.
Jeremy stops reading and looks at Candy, confused. "Candy? What? What do you have to do? I don't understand what's happening."
Candy walks over to him as he lays in the bed propped up on his elbow. "Jeremy, I'm sorry.
I. . ."
"Yeah, I get that. That you're sorry. But sorry for what?"
She places her hand on his cheek. "You are so handsome. How I wish I didn't have to do this."
"Do what?" he almost shouts.
She begins to cry and Jeremy sits up. Taking her hand he says, "Candy, please. Sit down and tell me what's going on. Please."
Candy sits down but can't look at Jeremy. "All right. I was hoping I would get gone before you woke up. It would have been so much easier if I didn't have to tell you goodbye."
"Goodbye? You're leaving me? You're leaving me because I let you down and didn't bring Jamie home?"
Candy shakes her head no. "No, I know you tried your best. You didn't let me down. Please believe me."
"Okay. So why are you leaving me?" Jeremy asks with misty eyes.
"I've had this thought, this feeling for days that I know where Jamie is and who has him. I. . ."
"You do? Who? Where?" Jeremy says excitedly.
"Uh, yes, I do. I'm going to go get him right now. If all goes as I hope, you'll have your son back with you sometime tomorrow."
"And you? You're coming back too, right?" he asks.
"Oh Jeremy, this is the hardest thing I've ever had to do," she cries.
Putting his arms around her, he says, "You're really worrying me, Candy. Look at me and tell me what are you going to do?"
"I'm going. . .I'm going to go make an even swap. Me for Jamie. If they will have me, I'll give myself over to them completely, to do whatever they want, if they will give Jamie back to you," she begins to sob.
"What?" Jeremy shouts. "No! No, you can't do that. I don't know who you're talking about, but Candy there's no way that I'm letting you walk out that door. You tell me who has Jamie and I'll go get him and bring him home."
Sitting up straight, Candy wipes her eyes. "Jeremy, that won't work. He'll kill you. And we both know he will do it this time."
"This time? Candy, do you mean Rafe? Rafe Holiday?"
"Yes, Richard has our son. I know it."
"But why do you think it's Rafe? I mean, has he sent word to you or something?" Jeremy asks.
"No, he hasn't. Who else could it be? He didn't get what he wanted the first time, so he's going to try again. I'm going up to that cave and make him an offer he can't refuse."
Jeremy takes the corner of the sheet and begins to wipe Candy's tears away. "There's no need to go to the cave, Candy. The day I left here to go look for Jamie, the cave is the first place I looked. I had that same thought. He wasn't there. The cave was cleaned out. The only thing I found there were a couple of those Crosse crates and they were empty."
"Well, just because he wasn't at the cave, doesn't mean that he didn't take Jamie. I'll look all over for him. I want to bring Jamie home," she begins to cry again.
"Think about it Candy. If Rafe has Jamie, why hasn't he made any demands. He knows you would do an even swap. He knows how much your loved ones mean to you. It wasn't Rafe that took our son."
"You really don't think it was Richard?" she asks.
"No, I don't. I think if Rafe had Jamie, he wouldn't hesitate to let us know it. He would be bragging about having my son and that he would soon have my wife. He would have demanded for you to come to him. You know he hates me, so what better way to get under my skin than to gloat over his triumph. So, forget about him. You go unpack, while I get dressed." He kisses her cheek.
"All right." She leans into his chest while he wraps his arms around her. "Jeremy?"
"Yes?"
"Do you think Jamie is close by? Or did the kidnappers take him out of the territory?"
"I don't know for sure. I'm going to guess they're close by. They're hiding out somewhere that we haven't thought of. They wouldn't want to risk someone seeing them."
"But didn't you and the men check everywhere close by?"
"Yes, we did. That's what is so baffling. I really think he's close, but I don't know where else to look. Candy, I know it's useless me telling you this, but I'm going to say it anyways."
"Say what?" she asks.
"Don't worry. We'll find him."
She smiles at him. "You're right. It was useless, but thank you for trying to give me hope." She kisses him and he returns the favor. "I love you Jeremy Bolt."
He smiles at her. "I love you Candy Bolt." He chuckles, "I'm not going to have to worry about you sneaking out of here to go look for Rafe, am I?"
"No, I promise I won't leave. I believe you. I know you would never lie to me," she replies.
"You're right. I wouldn't."
Several more days go by when a stranger comes up to the camp asking for Jeremy Bolt. Corky directs him to the tent, then sits down to sharpen some axes.
"Uh knock, knock," the stranger says as he gently raises the flap of the tent. "Can I come in?"
"If you're looking for work, I'm sorry. We're not hiring just now," Josh says.
"Ohs, I don't want a job. I'm a trapper, not a logger," the stranger replies.
"Well, what do you want then?" Jason asks annoyed. "Who are you?"
"My name is Jeb. I'm looking for a Jeremy Bolt."
"We're Jeremy's brothers What do you want with Jeremy?" Jason inquires.
Jeb takes a paper from his pocket and unfolds it gently. "I want ta know if this here is fer real? There's a reward for this here baby?"
"Yes, it's true. Do you have any information for us about Jamie?" Josh asks.
"Maybe. But I need ta talk with yer brother. Hes got the reward money, right?" Jeb asks.
"Well, he doesn't have it on him. You see, we have the money in a safe place. Any of us three brothers can get it. Now, how about you telling us what you think you know and we'll go from there," Jason states.
"I don't know. Cans I trust ya?" Jeb asks.
"We could ask the same thing, Jeb wasn't it?" Josh says as he is getting impatient. "Can we trust you?"
"Settle down Josh," Jason says. "Jeb, we need to hear what you know. If we think it's for real, we'll get Jeremy. We just don't want to get his hopes up and then have them dashed. I'm sure you understand."
"Okay. But whats I have to tell em is fer real. I seen a baby. Matches what this here paper says." He shakes the reward flyer in front of him.
Jason and Josh look at each other. "Where? Where did you see a baby? This baby?" Josh asks excitedly.
"Jeb, what makes you think it was this baby?" Jason asks calmly.
"I'm kinda new ta these here parts. I was sittin' my traps when I happened ta see this old run down cabin. I sneaked up real quiet likes cause I didn't want the old lady out front ta shoot me. Shes was talkin' to somebody, but I nevers saw anybody there with her. Then she picks this here baby up frem a basket. She says, 'Zeke, ye have the bluest eyes I ever seen. Just like yer Pa. Too bad. There's nothin' I can do ta change the color of yer eyes. Now the hair is easy ta change.'" He pauses to see their reaction. "That old lady weren't his Ma. She too old."
"Well, maybe she was his grandmother," Josh says. "Besides, the baby we're looking for is named Jamie, not Zeke."
"I figured ya wouldn't believe a trapper, so when she went back in the cabin, I sneaked up and took somethin'." He pulls a little stuffed bunny from his pocket. "I don't know if this here bunny means anythin' or not."
"Jason, that's Jamie's bunny," Josh almost shouts.
"Wait here." Jason says as he heads towards the tent opening. "Have a seat Jeb. Josh, give this man something to eat and drink, if he wants it." Out the tent he hurries, hollering for Corky. "Corky! Corky!"
Corky jumps up and runs over to Jason. Putting his hand on Corky's shoulder, Jason says, "Corky, I need you to hurry down to Jeremy's and bring him up here fast. Just tell him that Josh and I need his help about something. It's important."
"But Jason, you know Jeremy. He's going to want to know more than that," Corky says.
"All right. Tell him it's a matter of life and death. Mine and Josh's. That's all you know. Now get movin'!"
Jason watches as Corky jumps on a horse and gallops away. Returning to the tent, Jason says, "I just sent for Jeremy. He should be here soon. Is there anything else you need?" he asks seeing that Josh has given Jeb a shot of whiskey.
"Only the reward money. I needs it sos I can leave this place. If any of them other trappers finds out I talked, I'll be as good as dead. I got ta git out of here and fast."
"Well, we have to go check this story out first. And if indeed this baby you saw is our Jamie, then we'll get you the money and safe passage out of the area." Jason pours himself a shot of whiskey to calm his nerves.
Corky bangs on the door of the Bolt house. "Jeremy! Jeremy Bolt! You in there?" Corky yells.
Opening the door, Candy asks, "Corky? What's wrong? Is it Biddie?"
"No, I'm sorry Candy. I need to speak with Jeremy and fast."
"Well, he's in the barn with the horses. You go on out there and speak to him. Corky, you need to calm down," she smiles.
"Right! Thanks Candy!" Corky says as he runs to the barn.
"Jeremy! You in here?" Corky shouts as he enters the barn.
"Yeah, up here," Jeremy answers from the hayloft. "Anything wrong?"
"You need to come up to the camp now before Jason and Josh kill each other," Corky blurts out.
"Kill each other? Aren't you exaggerating?" Jeremy chuckles.
"No, I'm not. Jeremy please. You've got to help them."
"What are they fighting over?" Jeremy asks as he climbs down from the loft.
"Who knows! You know those two. They get started and just don't know when to stop. Hurry!" Corky pleads.
Jeremy grabs a saddle and tosses it to Corky. "Here, make yourself useful while I go tell Candy I'm going to the camp."
"Candy!" shouts Jeremy.
"In the kitchen," she answers.
As Jeremy enters the kitchen, Candy asks, "Why is everyone shouting? First Corky and now you."
"I don't know. Corky says I'm needed at the camp. Jason and Josh are going at it and he's afraid, well, he said for me to get up there before they kill each other."
"My goodness. What's gotten into them?" she asks.
"Probably the stress we've all been under. Will you be all right here alone while I'm gone? Do you want me to have Corky get Biddie to come stay with you?"
"No, I'll be fine. Molly and Christopher are in their rooms. If I need anything, I'll let them know."
"All right. I don't know how long this is going to take," he says. "I love you."
"And I love you right back. Hurry, okay?"
"You know I will." They give each other a tender kiss.
"Let's ride," Jeremy tells Corky as he mounts his horse.
Jeremy runs into the tent and stops in his tracks. He looks at his brothers with surprise. "I thought you two were killing each other," he says. "At least that's what Corky told me." He turns his head to look at Corky.
"Sorry, Jeremy. Jason told me to tell you it was life or death, his and Josh's. I just changed the words a little," Corky replies.
"We had to get you up here quickly and that's the only way I could think of without telling the truth," Jason says. "We didn't want anyone else to know whats going on. Even Corky doesn't know."
"I'll just go back to sharpening the axes," Corky states as he turns to leave the tent.
"No Corky, we need you to stay and hear this," Jason requests. "Jeremy, this is Jeb. Jeb, this is our brother, Jeremy Bolt, the one you wanted to speak with."
Jeremy nods his head and says, "Jeb. How you doing? You wanted to speak to me? Why?"
Jeb takes the flyer from his pocket, unfolds it, and shows it to Jeremy. "This here says there's a reward fer findin' this little boy. True?"
"Yes, that's true. Do you know where my son is?" Jeremy asks as he begins to tremble.
Jason grabs Jeremy's arm and helps him to sit. "Josh, get Jeremy some water. You all right, Jeremy?"
Taking the dipper from Josh, Jeremy takes a couple of swallows. "I'm fine. Just nerves, I guess." Looking at Jeb he repeats, "Do you know where my son is?"
After Jeb tells his story to Jeremy, Jeremy shakes his head. "It sounded promising up until you said his name was Zeke. My son's name is Jamie. I don't think it's my son."
Josh holds out the stuffed bunny. "Jeremy, Jeb took this from where he saw the baby. Isn't this Jamie's bunny?"
Jeremy takes the bunny and looks at it closely. "It does look like Jamie's. But. . ."
Jason interrupts, "Jeremy, this bunny was in Jamie's basket when Jamie disappeared. It has to be him."
"But I thought Ma Oates was still in prison. How did she get out?" Corky asks.
Jeremy stands and heads for the tent opening. "I don't know about any of this, but I'm going up there to see for myself," he says.
"Jeremy, wait! We have to be smart about this. We can't just barge in and demand she hand over the baby. She probably has her traps set up around the area. Besides, she might open fire on us. No, no, we need to plan this out."
"Well while you sit here planning this out, I'm going to go get my son!" Jeremy shouts.
"Come on Jeremy! You don't want to risk her hurting Jamie, do you?" Josh asks.
"Hurt?" Jeremy asks .
"Yes hurt. If Ma Oates feels the least bit threatened, she may do something drastic. We don't want to take that chance," Josh answers.
"Well, what do you propose we do then? I'm not going to wait too long," Jeremy replies.
"Okay, we need some more men to go with us. We'll surround the place. But we'll have to be sure there's no traps around. And quiet. We have to surprise her. Good so far?" Jason asks.
Everyone nods their heads. "I'll go on into town and get Aaron, Ben, and Clancey, if he's here and sober. We'll meet you at the turnoff to the Oates's cabin," Josh states.
"Josh, be sure this stays quiet. I don't want Candy to get wind of this and get her hopes up only to be disappointed," Jeremy says.
"I will. See you all soon," Josh says as he grabs his gun and runs from the tent.
"Corky, I need you to stay here with Jeb. Keep him out of sight and above all else, keep him safe. And remember, keep this quiet." Jason grabs a rifle and tosses it to Jeremy. He gets another gun along with some ammunition. "Ready?" he asks Jeremy.
Jeremy answers, "Ready." He turns to Jeb. "Thank you. If this is Jamie, you're going to be a rich man. Thanks, Corky."
"Good luck," Corky says as he watches his friends leave for what he hopes is a happy ending.
The men spread out and surround the house being very careful where they step. They sure don't want to get caught in one of Ma Oates's traps. Jason keeps Jeremy by his side. It's all he can do to keep Jeremy from running in there to get his son. They hope the plan they have worked out works. Josh is to draw her out of the house and hopefully Jason and Jeremy will be able to run in and get Jamie.
Josh finds a long stick and places in inside the trap triggering the trap to snap shut. He lays down at the trap pretending to be caught. He let's out a continuous howl.
"Well, looks like we caught us somethin'. Never heared a howl like that befer. Ya just stay put whilst I goes see whats we got," Ma Oates says to Jamie. She grabs her gun and opens the door. Josh continues to howl.
When Ma Oates gets near Josh, she stops and laughs. "Why it looks to be one of them there Bolts. Done git yerself in a fix, didcha? Ya Bolts always was trouble."
"Please! Help me! Get me out of this thing?" Josh pleads.
While Josh is keeping Ma Oates busy, Jeremy and Jason run into the house. Jeremy says, "I'm almost afraid to look. What if it's not Jamie?"
"Hurry Jeremy," Jason tells him. "We need to go."
Jeremy runs to the basket and tears spill from his eyes. Picking up his son he holds him close. "I never thought I'd see you again. Thank you Lord!"
"Why shore, I'll help ya," she laughs at Josh. Ma Oates starts to raise her gun when she hears several clicks behind her.
"Drop your gun, Mrs. Oates," Aaron tells her. "and turn around slowly. Josh, you okay?"
Josh jumps up and grabs the gun from Ma Oates before she can drop it. "I've never been better, Aaron," he answers. "Jason, Jeremy! All's clear. You can come out now."
As Jeremy, holding his son and Jason emerge from the cabin, Ma Oates hollers, "Hey, whatcha doin' wif me grandson. Ya can't take em. He belongs ta me. Eben give him ta me. He don't want em."
Jason walks up and stands in front of her. "You say this is Eben's boy? Got any proof of that?"
"I's don't need proof. That boys a Oates."
"This is my son Jamie! You took him from the park and made everyone's life a living hell!" Jeremy shouts.
She laughs. "And what kind of proof do ya have?"
"For starters, look at his eyes. They're my eyes. Look at his hair. It's the color of mine and Candy's hair mixed. He. . ."
"Don't mean nothin'. Eben's woman got blue eyes and red hair too."
"Eben's woman. Where is Eben's woman?" Jason asks.
"Dead. Died givin' birth ta the boy," Ma Oates says. "That why Eben don't want em. Says he kilt his woman."
"And where is Eben?" Josh asks.
"Don't know. Jest left," she answers.
"Likely story," Jeremy says. "I'm taking my son home. You're going back to jail. And I hope you rot in Hell." He begins to walk to the horses.
"Stop em! He's takin' me boy! Zeke!" Ma Oates screams.
"Mrs. Oates, you need to come with us, quietly. We'll keep you in jail until the Judge comes through. Looks like we'll be having another trial. In the meantime, we'll contact the authorities at the prison to see why you and Eben are free. We'll check out your story."
"But Zeke? Who gonna take care a Zeke?" she asks.
"His parents, Candy and me. His name is Jamie and you know it," Jeremy answers.
"Ya not his parents!" she shouts. She tries to think of something to stop them. "He has a freckle on his tummy. Did ya know that?" she asks.
"Yes, I did. Anyone changing his clothes would know that. It's pretty obvious." Jeremy starts to turn around and walk off. He stops and faces Ma Oates. "He also has another one somewhere else. You would know that if he were really yours. It's pretty obvious too, but it's in a place you may not have thought of. You see, Candy and I love our son. We inspected him from head to toe. I can tell you several things about him. Can you do the same?"
"Jeremy, will you tell us where another one is? Maybe we can put an end to this right now," Aaron says.
"I'll be glad to, but first I want her to tell me where it is. Do you even know?" Jeremy asks her.
"Well, shore I know."
"Well, tell us where it is?" Jason demands.
"It's, uh, it's on, uh, it's on his rear?" she guesses.
"Let's look and see," Aaron says. "Jeremy, do you mind showing us his uh, rear?"
Jeremy lays Jamie in Jason's arms and removes his diaper. Holding Jamie up in the air, he shows that there is no freckle on his rear. He diapers him again. "Now I will tell you where there is a freckle. It's between his toes." He takes Jamie's foot and spreads his toes apart showing the freckle. "He also has one on his left elbow." He then proceeds to show it. "Proof enough for you?"
"Hmm, to be such a devoted loving grandmother, you sure weren't very observant, were you?" Josh asks.
"Ben, do you have the cuffs?" Aaron asks.
"Right here," Ben says as he takes them from his pocket.
"Put them on her," Aaron replies. As Ben handcuffs Ma Oates, Aaron tells her, "You know, Mrs. Oates, things don't look good for you. And once we check with Olympia, I have a feeling your story is going to fall apart. Why don't you make it easy on yourself and confess to the kidnapping of Jamie Bolt? It may help you in court."
"Ya thinks so?" she asks.
"Yes. I do," Aaron replies.
"Can I tell him bye?" she asks as Jeremy starts to hand Jamie to Jason so he can mount his horse.
"Sure, I can't be as heartless as you," Jeremy answers.
Jeremy takes Jamie over to her. "Make it quick."
"Bye little fella. I don't guess I'll be seein' ya again. Thanks fer keepin' me company. Now, ya be a good boy fer ya, uh, Ma and Pa, ya hear? Even if they don't deserve ya, fer what them Bolts did to my Junior, I knows they do loves ya. I's loves ya too. But ya are a Bolt, through and through." She turns her back to them and says, "I's ready ta go."
Jeremy holds Jamie extra close on his ride to his house. He can't wait to surprise Candy.
It's mid afternoon and Candy is getting worried about why Jeremy isn't back yet from the camp. Are Jason and Joshua really that upset with each other? I know they have gotten into some big arguments before, but they always work it out. I hope they don't put Jeremy in the middle of one of their silly disagreements. He has enough on his mind without adding his brothers to the mix. She continues to pace back and forth on the front porch.
"Candy! Candy, make Christopher stop it," Molly yells.
Going inside she hears her brother and sister arguing over who knows what. "My goodness! What are you two arguing about now? Can't anyone in this family get along?" Candy asks them. "Now what's wrong?"
"Christopher, is whats wrong! He's licking his hand and trying to put his hand on my face!" Molly tattles.
"Christopher Andrew Pruitt! Is that true?" Candy demands to know.
"Well, maybe. But she started it. She sneezed in my face!" Christopher defends himself.
"Molly, did you sneeze in his face?" Candy asks.
"Yes, but it was an accident. I didn't have time to turn my head. I told him I was sorry," Molly replies.
"Yeah, she apologized after she laughed about it. So I was trying to pay her back," Christopher says.
"I want both of you to apologize right now and go to your rooms. You're to stay there until I tell you, you can come out. Do I make myself clear?" Candy scolds them.
"Yes ma'am," they both say pitifully.
"Sorry, Christopher."
"Sorry, Molly."
As they walk slowly from the room, Candy says, "You two have given me a headache. I'm going up to my room and I better not hear a peep out of either of you. Now scoot!"
Shaking her head, she gradually ascends the stairs. She freshens up, sits down in her rocker, and begins to read her Bible.
Jason, Joshua, and Jeremy cradling Jamie, arrive at the house. Jeremy hands Jamie down to Jason while he dismounts. As they walk up on the porch, Jeremy whispers, "It's awfully quiet around here. Maybe they're not home." He hands a key to Jason.
Josh says, "Maybe they're taking a nap."
Jeremy chuckles quietly, "Molly and Chris? That'll be a first."
Jason gently opens the door and they all step inside. Walking silently they check the kitchen and parlor. "You go on upstairs. Josh and I are going up to the camp. We have someone waiting on us for his big reward. We'll see you later."
Jeremy says, "All right, but would you thank Jeb for Candy and me. We'll be eternally grateful for what he did for us." Jeremy shifts Jamie a little so his right hand is free. He holds out his fist, while Josh places his hand on Jeremy's, and Jason places his hand on Josh's. "Thank you both. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Get upstairs and see if that beautiful wife of yours is up there. This will be one homecoming that neither of you will ever forget."
Jeremy quietly walks up the stairs, while his brothers go tend to the reward for Jeb.
Jeremy peers into their bedroom and sees Candy sitting in her rocker reading. He steps inside and says gently, "Candy?"
"Well it's about ti. . ." she begins as she turns to look at him. Her hands fly up to cover her mouth as tears swell in her eyes. "Jeremy? Jeremy, is it really him?"
Standing beside the rocker, Jeremy leans down and places Jamie in his Mama's arms. "Well, it better be, because I'm already in love with this little guy," he chuckles.
Candy cradles Jamie in her arms and weeps. Taking Jeremy's hand in her free hand, she kisses it and says, "Thank you, Jeremy. Thank you for bringing our son home. How did this happen? I thought you were going up to the camp to stop an argument between Jason and Joshua."
"I thought so too, but turns out they used that as an excuse to get me up there. I'll tell you everything later, but right now, I just want to soak in the happiness we feel. Uh, I think I felt that he needs changing, too. His bottom felt kind of squishy," Jeremy laughs as he wrinkles up his nose.
"You're right," Candy says. "But I don't want to let go of him just yet." Candy brings Jamie up on her shoulder and talks sweetly to him. "Hey sweetheart. Oh, how I've missed you. I'm so sorry I didn't take better care of you. But you're home now and I love you so much." Tears flow freely as she kisses him. "I love your Daddy too. Oh Jeremy, thank you! I do love you."
"I love you too," he says as he wipes the tears from his eyes. "Candy, I think you better change him before he gets a raw bottom," he chuckles.
"I think so too, he's starting to smell. But I have even missed that smell," she laughs. She takes him over to the bed and changes his diaper. Candy says, "Watch him while I take this to the washroom." She washes her hands before stepping back into the bedroom. She sees Jeremy sitting beside Jamie, holding his hand, and talking soothingly to Jamie.
"Jamie Bolt, I am so glad you're home. I'm sorry it took me so long to find you. I tried. I promise you I tried so hard to find you. Your mama and I have been worried sick about you. We missed you so much. But you're home now where you belong. You'll have to forgive her, but your Mama will probably be suffocating you for awhile. I know I will. I love you son," Jeremy breaks down and cries.
Candy rushes over and wraps her arms around Jeremy and they cry together until Jamie begins to cry too. "I guess he felt left out," Candy laughs. Picking him up, she sits on the bed beside Jeremy. Looking lovingly into Jeremy's eyes, she asks, "Have I told you how happy you've made me? I love you, Jeremy." She leans over and they share a tender kiss.
"I'll do everything I can to make you happy. I love you, Candy," Jeremy says as he puts his arm around her shoulder and draws her closer.
They sit like that for the next hour, just admiring their son and thanking God for his safe return.
THE END
