Disney World had stopped being fun a long time ago.
Back when she and Sho had been little they had practically lived at Disney World. That was because they had no friends. Once they had friends they had something else to do with this time, mainly hanging out with their friends in a place that wasn't hot and crowded. She had forgotten how hot and crowded Disney World was. The original one…well they were all kind of hot but this one was somehow the worst.
Kind of like being back in Japan.
Osaka. This place felt like Osaka. It was hot and sticky and also it rained sometimes for no reason at all. That was what the ponchos were for…though it was going to be hard to get Mukai into one. She was having too much fun…so much fun that she was crying tears of joy. Also she wanted a soda…even though she had a soda…and she wanted a big lollipop too even though she'd thrown and broken the last two big lollipops that Mob had gotten her. Mob…well she wanted to get Mukai another one, she loved to make her little sister happy after all, but…it was kind of wasteful is all she was going to do was throw them on the ground so they shattered. Also dad hated it when she was wasteful…not that she cared what dad thought. He was all the way back in Japan and…and if he thought that he had a say in whether or not Mukai was wasteful then…then he shouldn't have called her a mistake and he shouldn't have gotten rid of her and…and…
And he should have been a better dad!
She calmed down. She calmed down before she even felt upset…any more than she already was. It was hot and sticky, plus she was wearing leggings, plus she felt gross, plus she was just…mad at everything. It was like everything in the world was trying to make her mad…but she didn't let it show. She was at Disney World and this was supposed to be the happiest place on Earth. Also she couldn't upset Mukai…any more than she already was. She was tugging on Mob's skirt asking for more soda…even though she had a cup of soda. Why couldn't she just enjoy what she had? She was acting like dad. He was never happy with what he had either. He had a whole bunch of people in Claw but he was always off looking for more people to recruit. He had a best friend but he had to go and take one of Mob's best friends with him so he didn't end up feeling lonely…she didn't think that Hatori would have been very happy here since he spent most of his time inside….but still! It would have been nice to have had him around…even if it was just to keep Serizawa company…but no, he was gone…and Minegishi was gone…and all of her friends were leaving her until it would just be her and Sho alone in Disney World day in and day out until it got so boring that-
Mukai wanted soda. Mob was going to deal with one thing at a time.
"Mukai, please stop it…you have soda, see? A whole collector's cup full of Coke…and mine has Sprite if you want it." Said Mob. She smiled when she said that. She did her best to smile with her face and with her aura, since Mukai could read both, but she might have been doing it wrong. Some people walked past and gave her a look that she wasn't even about to try and read. She smiled weird, most things about her were weird, she knew it. The kids at school, back when she had gone to school, said that to her all the time….but that was ok. She couldn't help who she was. Right now she had to help her little sister.
Her little sister who just tried to throw a whole collectable soda cup on the ground.
They were expensive. Everything here was. Mob didn't care about the money, they had entire suitcases of it back at the hotel, but Tsuchiya sometimes did. She was always making Mob count up how much money she spent. It was hard because what things cost in this country wasn't written on the price tag. There was sales tax and stuff…which was kind of annoying…but she could deal with that. She had no idea why Tsuchiya cared so much though, it wasn't her money that Mob was spending, and even if it was if Tsuchiya needed money she could just get some out of the suit cases.
The lines, honestly, were the worst thing. Mob didn't care if it costed a billion yen just to stand in the sun and sweat. It was the lines…the constant lines…and the soda lines were some of the worst.
"I've got blue stuff if she wants blue stuff." Said Sho as he held out his cup. Mukai just pushed it away and crossed her arms. That wasn't nice at all…but Mob wasn't in the mood to teach Mukai manners right now. It was hot, very hot, and she just wanted to be somewhere cool. She would even have gotten Mukai another giant lollipop to throw if it meant that she got to be somewhere cool for just a little bit.
"I've got lemonade. How about some lemonade, huh Mukai?" asked Shibata as he held his drink cup out. He accidentally hit Mukai with a souvenir bag…but she didn't seem to mind. She mostly just pushed his cup away too. Mob hoped that this wasn't one of those times when Mukai wanted them to play twenty questions to figure out what she wanted. Mob felt a bead of sweat drop down from her hair and onto the front of her shirt. It was a white shirt with the Disney Castle on it…and it was showing through in some places with sweat…even though she wasn't even in that many layers. She wasn't even wearing an undershirt today but she was still all sweaty and gross…and probably gross looking too. She could feel her sweat making her hair stick to her forehead…and that was bad for your skin.
Minegishi had said so.
If Minegishi had been there then they would have said to find some shade or some air conditioning. They would have found the Starbucks so they could read…and they would have brought their big book satchel…and they would have said something like 'find me when it's time to go' and…and Mob would have wanted Minegishi to come and have fun with her. She would have wanted Minegishi to ride the small world ride. There were some really cute dolls there…well they didn't like cute dolls but they loved playing dolls with her…and…and there was that Frozen ride, the new one. It got you all wet and they hated being hot…but also they hated being wet. Well they could have come with her and Mukai to the princess makeover room, they let her give them makeovers sometimes…but they were a lot older than she was and she was too old to fit into the dresses there, she had to bring her own, and she didn't have anything big enough to fit Minegishi…
Ok, maybe they wouldn't have had fun here…but it would have been better having them here than wherever they had gone to in Japan.
"I have no idea what's in here but it tastes like orange soda…Toshi would have loved it. I mean Toshi would have hated it here. They hate the heat and they hate crowds but they do love orange soda…I mean they think that sugar is poison but-" said Shimazaki. She knew him and she knew when he was sad. He should have been having fun…this was just the place for him! He loved crowds and he loved new places and…and also he probably would have loved roller coasters...and also there was chocolate here! A lot of it. He was eating fudge! And he'd just had a Mickey Mouse ice cream bar! He should have been happy but he was all…like that…of course he was. He had lost the love of his life. He had…well they were still alive…but they were gone. They were back in Japan and they should have been with their boyfriend. That was why you had a boyfriend, so you had someone with you all the time who loved you and cared for you more than anyone else in the world.
If Mob had a boyfriend then she would have been with him always.
He would have held her hand while they walked down Main Street. He would have held her hand on Splash Mountain. He would have ridden the tea cups with her but he would have been sure not to spin them too fast because he would have known that she didn't like being dizzy. Also he would have shared a Mickey Mouse ice cream bar but let her have both ears because he loved her and the ears were the best part. Also he would have ridden the new Frozen ride with her, the one where you got wet, and he wouldn't had said that it was boring or that he was sick of Frozen...he would never have gotten sick of anything that she liked. Also he would have thought that she was pretty even when she was all sweaty. He would have loved her and…and they would have gone to be our guest together since that was the nicest restaurant…and also after dinner they would have gone to the parade and held hands and kissed…and then they would have gone to the top of the castle and-
-and these were not the thoughts to have when she was with her brother, sister, and some of her friends.
Also she didn't even know if Teru would have liked Disney World. She didn't know much about Teru. She knew that he was blond…and he was a good kisser…and he liked soccer…and he was part German and…and that was it. She didn't know him and he didn't know her and…and she wanted to know him better but she was never going to see him again…and if Minegishi had been there then they would have told her that she was being ridiculous and that there were lots of other boys around that she could talk to…like the tall boy who was looking at her…the one in the Star Wars shirt…and she kind of liked Star Wars…she thought that the baby Yoda was cute…and she could have liked the rest of it…
She had to worry about her friends and family now. She didn't get to worry about boys.
"Maybe we shouldn't talk about them right now." Said Tsuchiya
"Yeah, let's um….let's get something else drink! Or we can find something that Mukai's tall enough to ride…and that I'm not too tall to ride." Said Shibata
"That's a good idea. Come on, let's do that and not talk about Minegishi. We shouldn't anyway because…um…they wouldn't want that. They don't like it when people talk about them. It makes them think-" said Mob. She didn't want to talk about Minegishi because it made her sad…but that was selfish of her. She should have been thinking about her friend and how they didn't like it when people would talk about them…or she should have been worried about Sho and how talking about Minegishi would just break his heart more than it had been broken already….or even she should have been worried about how sad Shimazaki was going to be if they kept on talking about the love of his life. She should have been less selfish…
But when she got like this it was hard to think of everyone else. Especially when she was so conscious about herself and…stuff.
"Who cares what Minegishi thinks? They ran away." said Sho with a click of his tongue and a wave of his hand…and Mob was going to stay calm…and she was not going to freak out…even though Sho had just said…something that wasn't true. Sho was just trying to be mean because he was jealous and his heart hurt. She had never been rejected, the only boy who had ever kissed her for real was kept apart from her because they were on opposite sides, like Kovu and Kiara from the second Lion King movie. They didn't have to be on opposite sides…he could have been in Claw with her…but he kept on being accidentally kidnapped and even if he joined Claw he wasn't ever going to be with his parents ever again since he was born an esper and they were normal people…but…but she wanted to see him. She wanted the boy she loved…and she wanted her friends back…and she just…she wanted to stay calm.
She had tried…and that was good for something. Right?
"They didn't! They just have something to do in Japan." Said Mob. Her voice got small towards the end. She had almost shouted at her brother…and now all of her friends were looking at her…but not Mukai. She was busy throwing her Mickey ears hat up in the air. Mob didn't know if she was having fun, bored, or just working out some anger. Mob hoped that Mukai was working out anger. That was a bad feeling, the one that made you lose control, and the one that made you lose everyone you loved. She didn't need to get mad…she was happy. Sure her little brother and sister were upset and her best friend was gone and…and her family was broken and…and her heart hurt so much when she thought about the boy, the only boy, who had ever liked her…she may have had all of those feelings inside of herself and…and that was where they had to stay.
Conceal, don't feel. For Mukai's sake.
"That's what dad says, he has work to do, when he feels like running away…and I say let them run away. They don't know how to have fun and they're a mother fucking-" said Sho
"Sho! Stop saying bad words." Said Mob. There. That was…something that she could say. She wasn't angry. She was just…teaching Sho manners. That was it. Her job was to teach Sho manners and cursing, even if it was in Japanese, was bad manners…and now she sounded like dad….and Fukuda…but maybe they had a point. Sho shouldn't have been saying things like that. For Mukai's sake.
She was like a little parakeet.
"Mother fucking! Mother fucking!" shouted Mukai. Tsuchiya put her hand over Mukai's mouth. People were looking but nobody could understand them…at least it didn't seem like anyone could understand them. Mob didn't know and she wasn't about to ask. She just wanted this to be done with, she didn't want to make it any worse than it already was.
"All I said was-" said Sho
"We all heard what you said, now stop saying it. I don't want Mukai learning those words…any more than she already has." Said Tsuchiya
"What's the problem? It's not like anyone around here speaks Japanese." Said Sho
"The problem is-" said Tsuchiya
"You don't even like them, you know, so why are you defending them? You said that they were a bitch. I heard you." Said Sho. Well he did have a point there. If Tsuchiya didn't want Sho to curse then she shouldn't have been using the b-word like that…and also she shouldn't have been calling Minegishi the b-word. Minegishi was not the b-word. They were her best friend. Sure they had been kind of mean lately but that was just because they were tired all the time…and also because of their period…and also because they hated riding on planes…and also because…um…well she didn't know all the reasons why they were like that, she couldn't read minds, but she did know that her best friend was not a b-word!
If any of her friends were a b-word then it was Minori…but she would never say that out loud. It was bad enough that she had thought it.
"That's not the-it doesn't matter how I feel about them, what matters is that you're standing in the middle of Disney World cursing like it's going out of style." Said Tsuchiya
"When will cursing be out of style? Soon?" asked Mob. She didn't know why everyone was looking at her like that. Cursing going out of style was a good thing. It meant that maybe Sho could stop saying f-word this and f-word that all the time. She missed when they were little and Sho didn't curse...those had been good times even if they had been very short.
"Shigeko, it's just a figure of-" said Tsuchiya
"Fuck Minegishi. If they want to leave then fine. They're boring and they ruin everything that they're a part of by being all boring and shit." Said Sho. Mukai looked like she was trying to repeat what Sho said but Tsuchiya quickly covered her mouth again…and now she dropped her cup. Great. There was soda all on the ground and on Mukai's legs and sandals…and also on Mob's sandals. She was wearing extra high jelly sandals...and they were hard enough to walk in as it was without her feet sliding around in them…or getting covered in blisters because soda dried sticky…but Mob wasn't going to be upset. She could always get new shoes…and wash her feet off in the bathroom sink…even though that was a really gross thing to do since people washed their hands in there…
If Minegishi had been there then they would have told Mob to stop being ridiculous…but they weren't there so Mob was going to keep on being ridiculous.
"Kid, I have no idea what green is but I get the feeling that you're it. Don't talk about Toshi like that…and stop being jealous. I don't like jealousy, it's boring and annoying." Said Shimazaki. Mob wished that he hadn't said that. Sho's whole aura went close to him like he was hiding under a blanket. Shimazaki knew that Sho was in love with him…why did he have to be that way!? Well he did think that jealousy was boring, that was why he was in an open relationship with Minegishi. That meant that they could both go off and kiss…and more…with other people….but Sho couldn't have been one of those people because Shimazaki didn't like him like that and he wasn't going to wait for Sho to grow up and stuff…
Even though that would have been easier on everyone, especially Sho, if he just told him to wait until he was an adult…or something.
"Sorry…." said Sho quietly. He was red, now, and his eyes were getting watery…and Mob didn't blame him. She didn't know what she would have done if her boyfriend, not that she would ever have a boyfriend, and not that Shimazaki was Sho's boyfriend said that to her.
"Sho, don't be sad…we're at Disney World." Said Mob. She didn't even believe it when she said it. That was the kind of thing that she would have said when they had been little. When they had been sad, still, because mom had just left them. They were still sad, or at least she was, or at least she was at least a little bit…but the hurt had scabbed over. Maybe the hurt that Sho felt because of Shimazaki would scab over…she hoped that it happened soon. She didn't know what she would do with him if his heart never scabbed over.
"Sho sad…Sho so sad…" said Mukai as she got free of Tsuchiya. She put her hand on Sho's and patted it. Someone walked past and said that it was cute…well it wasn't. There was nothing cute about her little brother being hurt, his heart being hurt, and there was nothing cute about Mukai having to take care of him. Mob…even she got tired sometimes…but this was her job. She was the big sister, not the little sister, and she had to take care of everyone. She had to worry about everyone. Mukai was lucky. All she had to worry about was herself.
"He's not sad…he's just thirsty! Yeah, who wants a refill? We should all go and get refills right now." Said Shibata
"Refill! Soda! Now please and thank you!" said Mukai as she let go of Sho and picked her cup up off the ground…she would need a new one…and Mob hoped that Tsuchiya didn't make her do any math. She didn't care how much money she spent. What would have made more sense to do would have been to count all the people in line and figure out some math to tell her how long they would be standing for…
She didn't need math to tell her that she would have been waiting in that line for a very long time.
"Alright, what kind do you want? Do you want more Coke or do you want diet…well nobody ever wants diet anything…but they have green and blue and orange and grape, like you mom has and-" said Shibata
"Please stop offering my daughter soft drinks." Said Tsuchiya with a groan.
"Um…alright…they have water, too. They have water and bubbly, which is like soda but without the stuff that makes it taste good, and they have beer…but Mukai's too young for beer." Said Mob
"I need a drink." Said Sho suddenly. Mob blinked. Well at least he was calm…though she didn't like the way that he said that. She hoped that he didn't mean it like she thought that he meant it. She didn't think that he needed a drink the way she needed a drink. Sure his heart hurt but his insides weren't trying to become his outsides…and also he just…he didn't need it like she did…and when you started it was very hard to stop…
So maybe she shouldn't have let him start in the first place.
"Do you want some of my Sprite? Or do you want a refill on the blue…whatever that stuff was? The blue soda?" asked Mob
"It was blue raspberry soda…and that's not what I meant. I meant that I want a real drink. Like you drink all the time. I need one right now." Said Sho. Mob had no reason to say no…at least no good reason. She didn't want her brother to have to need to do what she needed to do. She wanted him to be…she didn't even know. Better than she was? He had been saying, for as long as she could remember, that she had been born right and he had been born wrong…but she was pretty sure that he had it backwards. He was the one who could control his powers after all. She was the one who needed a lot of extra help. She wished that she could have been…well if didn't matter what she wished for. Wishes didn't come true no matter how many paper cranes you folded.
"Alright, now there's a plan-" said Shimazaki. Well he was happier now…and if he was happy then Sho was happy…and also she was happier. She wasn't happy about Sho drinking, she didn't want him to be like her, but if he only drank a little bit, not a lot, then maybe…then maybe it would be ok. She wanted him to be happy…she wanted everyone to be happy…even if she wasn't entirely happy…though maybe she wasn't trying hard enough. She was in the happiest place on Earth after all.
"You're eleven. They aren't going to serve you…at least they better not." Said Tsuchiya. She had a point. She always had a point…and she really hated drinking and smoking too. She didn't really like fun all that much…but she couldn't help it…and even she had a point sometimes. Sho wasn't going to be served. She probably wasn't even going to be served either. She was dressed more like a kid, she wasn't showing her stomach and her skirt was a lot longer than was cool. She got served when she went out with Shimazaki but that was because she looked older and also people thought that she was his girlfriend….which was gross…not that she would ever say that out loud. She would never have hurt his feelings like that.
"How about we get some soda or milk shakes-" said Shibata
"That's a great idea. Tsuchiya's right, they won't serve you. You're too young but if we get milkshakes then I bet that Shimazaki has something in his flask we can add. Vodka is good in milk shakes and so is…what's that other stuff called? The stuff that I had in the sea salt and vanilla shake we got from that one place-" said Mob. A little, just a capful, that was enough. Any more and Sho…well Sho didn't do well when he got drunk and….and also this was Disney World and people did not get drunk at Disney World. This was not the place for it. Elsa and Anna were here, well actresses dressed like them, and she did not want Elsa and Anna to see her and Sho like that.
"You've been going places with Shimazaki without me?" asked Sho. His eyes were narrow and his aura was focused on her…and…oh! He was jealous! She wasn't Shimazaki, she didn't think that jealousy was boring, but that didn't mean that she liked it. She actually hated it, hurting Sho, and also…also…why did people keep trying to pair her up with Shimazaki! First Fukuda and dad and now Sho! She just…she was calm. Conceal don't feel. If Elsa had been on their side of the park, and also real and not an actress, then she would have been proud of Mob. Even prouder than mom had been when Mob learned to braid her hair on her own.
"We just hang out. I don't like him like that." Said Mob. She was calm and she wasn't going to….to shout. She stepped away from Shimazaki just a little bit…even though she knew that Sho wasn't going to change his mind just because she took a step away from the boy he loved most in the entire world.
"Ouch." Said Shimazaki
"Sorry, I just don't have feelings like that about you. You're my best friend's boyfriend and Sho loves you a lot too and-" said Mob. She had hurt his feeling…she had hurt her friend's feelings! She was a bad friend and…and no wonder Hatori and Minegishi had left. She was a bad friend and one day she would wake up and…and everyone would be gone and she would be all alone and…and it would all have been her fault!
"Shigeko…shut up." Said Sho. His aura was flaring against hers and…and he was mad. He was mad and…and she was the reason. She went back over what she had said…and she had said too much. She had been clueless…and now she had to go back and fix it.
"Here. You're overheating…probably because you're wearing a coat." Said Mob. There. Now everyone would think that he was just hot and not embarrassed. She had saved him. She was a good big sister…and if Minegishi had been there then they would have agreed with her…but even if they hadn't left then they would have been somewhere dark and cool so they could read and…and she maybe wanted to be somewhere cool and dark….but she had to be out here, in the sun, because this was where everyone else was…
She should have bought a shady hat.
"Hot outside!" said Mukai
"If he faints then I can catch him…maybe I should just carry him." said Shibata
"Carry me…now! Please and thank you!" said Mukai holding up her hands. Sho picked her up, not Shibata, which made sense because he didn't like to pick her up. He was worried about hurting her…and she should have been more worried about hurting people too. She should have thought more about her little brother and her little sister and her friends, too. She had been way too selfish lately…but she could fix it…somehow.
"Right. Alright…um…yeah. It's hot as fuck out. Come on let's…let's go ride Splash Mountain or…or something." Said Sho. That….was his least favorite ride. He hated getting wet, that was why he hadn't had a real bath since Tokyo, and getting water on his face was the worst…so why did he want to go? Because he used to like it when he was little, before dad had put him in an awakening machine? Or maybe it was because Mukai had never ridden it...but she was way too short…and Shibata was way too big and the ride was way too small…
She didn't get it.
"But…ok." Said Mob. She didn't get it but she wasn't going to fight with Sho. He wasn't angry. She wasn't being yelled at. He was…he wanted to have fun…and she was going to let him have all the fun that he wanted. She wanted everyone to be happy, she wanted everyone to have fun, everyone who was there. She loved…..she loved her friends and…and she was going to make her friends happy. All the ones that she had left. They were going to ride all the rides and eat all the snacks and go to all the restaurants and get all the autographs and even…she would even get Mukai all the giant lollipops that she wanted….since Mob wanted to make her happy.
She wanted to make all of her friends happy. That was the point of Disney World.
Disney World had stopped being fun a while ago…for Mob. Mukai had never been before, and neither had her other friends, and Mob…well it didn't matter how hot and sweaty and gross she was…and how angry her little brother got….or how jealous he was…even though he had no reason to be jealous and…and…and…
This had stopped being fun a long time ago…but that was ok. Everyone else was happy. That was what mattered.
