AN: Hello everyone, and welcome to Kinship Between Demons! Title is honestly a work in progress. The idea jumped into my head a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't been able to shake it yet. This is my first proper try at a fic, not counting that honestly embarrassing attempt at a Destiny crossover a few years ago. I like to think I have grown since then and would like to attempt a proper one with the things I have learned since then.

Now, context. This is a POST DMC5 fic, set in the Naruto Universe. Starting out during the Kyuubi attack, and featuring very little in huge plot divergence. I do not have enough confidence in my skill as a writer to attempt to diverge from canon too drastically. This was heavily inspired by the DMC works from smilingsamurai, and as such the Vergil I intend to portray is heavily based on theirs.

Now without further prattling from myself, onwards!

His blade sung through the air, first down then across. A click as the hilt met the sheath was drowned out as a rip in space time opened in front of the man. He looked to his brother, lounging in his office chair with his boots up on the desk, the man's head hung back as a magazine featuring scantily clad women was draped across his face. Unkempt silver hair hung down around the back of the article, barely visible to the first man

"Dante. I am leaving, as we discussed previously. Nero," another man, younger than the other two, yet obviously related by the silver hair and fondness for long coats, "Please make sure that Dante at least keeps up a vaguely respectable appearance." Nero shrugged and gave a two-finger salute, glancing up from his book. "How long you going for? Never actually told us and I know the old man will forget and then pester me for the answer."

Vergil started walking towards his portal, dismissing his sword, replying "I will first see if this world has anything worth doing or seeing. However, I should be back in a few days, not counting any… delays I might encounter." Vergil paused just before the threshold of the rip. "Stay safe, son. And pass my farewell to Kyrie" Nero nodded, returning to his book. "You got it pops, and if we don't hear from you for a month, I will start staging a rescue op."

Vergil smirked as he turned back to his portal, "As if I would need rescue." He marched over through the portal. There was a brief moment of disorientation, a sensation of twisting and turning through a very narrow tunnel, before there was a slight pop! And the swordsman looked up to find himself in clearing. Blinking once, he looked around, noting the very lush tree line, the towering trunks of the trees, the dense leaves forming a canopy that even his eyes struggled to pierce.

But as his eyes searched his surroundings, Vergil's more otherworldly senses stretched out, searching for any signs of life. The Dark Slayer's finely tuned senses picked out… something he couldn't immediately identify. It oddly reminded him of sensing demonic energy, only this energy emanated from what could only be human sources and lacked the dark tinge that every demonic entity had. And yet at the same time, it seemed to be remarkably less potent than the demonic energy he wielded.

Hmm, a mystery to solve. This trip is already proving interesting. He thought to himself, before startling. The humans he had sensed had abruptly taken off at great speed, almost directly away from him. But there is no way for them to detect me, I had suppressed my presence before even arriving in this world. But then something else hit his senses. As he acclimated to the world, his senses spread further, and he had detected what could only be the cause of the human's sudden departure.

Now that is quite the source of power. It is similar to the energy I sensed coming off the humans, but it carries the tinge of anger, hate. This bears further investigation. With that thought in mind, Vergil vanished in a muted flash of blue, reappearing on a tree branch, before repeating. Moving closer to the source of that hateful energy. Quiet swooshes heralded his arrival, before just as quickly announcing his departure from that particular branch, appearing so briefly that any eyes would simply see a brief flicker of the man before he was gone again. Before long, Vergil began seeing signs of civilization. He crossed over a road, and ended up on top of a gate standing before what appeared to be a decently sized town. A town that appeared to be under siege, judging from the massive smoke cloud that obscured a huge portion of the town.

And then then the sky split. A ball of condensed energy screamed out of the fog, moving towards a cliffside overlooking the village (which he idly noted had several faces carved onto it), before abruptly vanishing. His sharp eyes picked out a figure falling with blonde hair, before being drawn to a massive explosion out in the distance. That attack was moved somehow, and that falling man has something to do with it. Vergil looked back to the man, only to find a yellow flash in his place. Hmm. Teleportation. Similar to mine I wonder? Vergil idly mused before turning back to the dispersed smoke cloud, only to see a very large eye looking through the hole left by the technique.

Now that the smoke had dispersed some, Vergil could see the probable cause of the explosion. A massive, orange fox adorned with nine swinging tails. He looked into the eye again, noting how it was filled with rage, before the fox seemed to shake its head. A jet of fire slammed into one of the creatures' ears, before the fox gave an incoherent snarl and began to shift to swing its massive tails. An attack with that much power behind it would level a good portion of this village, and I can sense many people down there. I can FEEL Dante giving me that gimlet glare. Curse my do-gooder brother. Vergil sighed, before making a gesture like he was grabbing something. In a flash of blue fire, his sword appeared in his hand.

Taking the form of a beautiful katana, the Yamato is a lifelong companion of Vergil, the sheath, composed of lacquered black wood, with the hilt wrapped in a white silk, and the tsuba emblazoned with a golden engraving in a triangular pattern. Vergil inspects his sword for a moment, before turning back to the fox. Getting into a runner's stance on the gate, he waits for the fox to draw back its tail, before making his move.

The Son of Sparda blurs into action. The tiles on the gate shatter as he pushes off, blurring across the rooftops faster than the eye could see as he closed in on the fox. Pushing off the closest rooftop, Vergil takes note of the humans gathering around the fox, many attempting to stop the fox by… firing a ponds worth of water out of their mouth? Putting it off as unimportant for now, Vergil shifts position in midair, positioning his foot out in a flying kick, backed by all the power of one who has consumed the fruit of the Qlipoth. Vergil's heel makes impact with the fox's brow, and the beasts head snaps to the side, the attack diverted in the face of such overwhelming strength. The ground shook as the fox slumped to the ground, momentarily dazed.

Vergil appears back on the rooftop in a crouch, surrounded by the strange humans. They pause in their gawping to take note of this stranger, who has appeared out of nowhere, dressed in odd clothing and grasping a clearly well-made sword. "Well?" Vergil demands. "Get on it, I have stopped its attack! I will ensure your town remains safe while you combat the beast!" Shook out of their stupor by his words, the humans around Vergil go on the attack once again.

"Coordinate water jutsu at the Kyuubi! Once it's hit by the water, anyone with lightning jutsu has attack priority! Keep it stunned and on the back foot!" One dressed in what looks like a green flak jacket yelled, before turning with some of his compatriots, making some movements with his hand, and yelling "Suiton: Exploding Water Colliding Wave!" as him and several others spit a frankly ridiculous amount of water at the fox's face. Vergil nods in satisfaction. He turns his senses to the humans doing the technique, noting how they were using the energy they produced to make the water do their bidding. So, they can perform techniques they call 'Jutsu' by fueling it with their internal energy, and directing it with the hand movements. This has been worth it indeed.

Vergil found his inner musings distracted by the arrival of a single kunai cutting through the air and embedding itself into the ground. He had only a moment to ponder on its design, ending with three points instead of the traditional design Vergil was familiar with, before there was a bright yellow flash and the man he witnessed teleporting earlier arrived.

Now that Vergil was closer, he could see the honestly quite ridiculous hairdo the blonde possessed, along with the long coat with the kanji on the back denoting the man as something called the Fourth Hokage. The blond looked towards the apparent ninja soaking and electrocuting the fox, before turning towards Vergil. "I saw what you did, stopping that attack. Thank you protecting my people. My name is Minato, but further introductions will have to wait. Do you think you can immobilize the Kyuubi for a minute? I need time to gather the chakra needed to Hiraishin this damn demon away from the town to a location where I can deal with it."

Vergil gave the man a stare for a moment, before nodding. "I can immobilize it for however long you need, just give me a moment." The Slayer closed his eyes for a moment, gathering his power and focus, before sharply snapping his eyes open to reveal them glowing a with a blue fire. "AWAY FROM THE BEAST NOW!" Vergil snapped over the sound of the battle, before giving the shinobi a second to jump away. A moment later, thirteen massive blades formed of Vergil's blue demonic energy, his mirage blades, hovered over the fox's body as it struggled to its feet, before slamming down on it, holding down all nine tails and it's four limbs. All but the most seasoned Jonin paused to gape at the spectacle holding down the Biju, before the Hokage blurred down to the pinned fox, slapped a hand on it, and vanished in a spectacular yellow flash that had the shinobi blinking spots out of their eyes.

Vergil raised his eye upon seeing that teleportation technique again. I felt his... chakra he called it, reaching out to a point before he teleported. So, he needs a predetermined point to teleport to. Hmph. I still feel that beast's chakra, I should follow. I want to see where he is going with this. With that thought in mind, Vergil teleported away from all the shinobi left on the ground, beginning to move about helping wounded allies and gathering their dead.

The Son of Sparda arrived at a massive purple dome, which was positively pulsating with the chakra Virgil had been sensing. He could sense the presence of the Fourth Hokage, along with two others. One whose chakra had the distinct flavor of the foxes, and one who felt… new, young. Vergil stepped towards the barrier and held his hand out towards it. It felt distinctly hostile and bluntly forcing his way through would take time that the Hokage didn't have. No, this will require some skill. And so, Vergil finally unsheathed the Yamato, the brilliantly shining blade hanging at his side, held loosely in his grasp as Vergil examined the barrier. Settling into a wide stance and bringing the blade up so that it would be held across his body in both hands, Vergil struck. Cutting twice, slicing a portion of the barrier out so he could slip his body through, the barrier repairing itself behind him. Huffing slightly in agitation, Vergil sheathed his blade and turned to face the inside of the barrier.

The fox was still pinned to the ground, but was struggling mightily to unpin its limbs, the daze of the blow to the head having evidently worn off. Supplementing his mirage blades, were brilliant chains composed of vermillion chakra of a woman with shockingly red hair. Looking closely, Vergil realized that she was the one who smelt of the fox, and that her appearance was leaning more towards the haggard side. At her side was Minato, who had just placed a baby sharing his hair color on an altar in the middle of the area. Wincing as he stood up, Minato began flashing through hand signs, before slamming his hands onto the ground. Black script scrawled itself onto the ground, as he called out "Fuinjutsu: Dead Demon Consuming Seal!"

As soon as Minato called his technique, Vergil felt a chill upon the area. Looking around frantically for the source, he sees a specter reach out for the Kyuubi, and promptly carve it into two, before eating one half of the resultant energy, and taking the other half in hand and moving towards the child. Reaching it, the specter reaches out with its other hand, preparing to place a finger on the stomach of the child. At least, that was until Vergil, unwilling to watch something happen to a babe who he could tell was not even hours old, interposed himself between the specter and the child. Placing his blade against the wrist of the hand reaching out for the baby, the blade shimmering a cold blue as he channeled energy through it to actually be able to touch the spirit. "Cease. Lest I take your hand." The Slayer instructed with a hint of cold anger peeking through. Minato coughed behind him, "Wha… How'd you… Let him through! I don't want to, but this is the only way to stop the Fox!"

Vergil turned a single eye towards him. "Are you certain? This thing reeks of death, and I could easily kill that Fox." He asked with a voice that shook all around with its power. Minato nodded sadly. "I wish I didn't have to, but this is the only way to both stop the fox and guarantee that my son has the power to stand up to the future. The man who did this is still out there, and he will need that power to stop him." Vergil stared a moment more, then nodded once and lowered his blade. The specter seemed to grin at the Slayer, as it once more reached out towards the child and tapped its stomach. There was an orange flash and a final roar as the Fox was sealed away. As the specter faded away, Minato sagged. He collapsed onto his back, breathing heavily.

Vergil could sense his life force draining away. He moved to kneel next to the downed Hokage. "That technique had a heavy price. You are dying." Minato chuckled dryly, "I knew that already. But if my sacrifice means that my village, my people can keep going, then I will make it a thousand times with a smile on my face." The small smile faded slightly, "Even if it means that my son is condemned to a life that I never would have wanted for him." Minato grabbed at his sleeve "Please watch over my son. You are powerful, more than me, and I can tell you have a good heart." Virgil gave him a strange look. "You barely know me. We met minutes ago, when I kicked that fox in the head. Why me? I am hardly the role model a child should look to." The red-haired woman managed to drag herself over from where she had fallen after the sealing. "But you are all we can reach. That alone means you are our best choice." At this, Vergil had to concede. He thought for a moment. I suppose watching over doesn't mean caring for, and at very least it will be different from hunting the weaklings so my idiotic brother can pay his bills on time.

Vergil nodded to them both. "Very well. You have my word that I will watch over your son, at least until the point when I determine he no longer needs my supervision." The woman sighed, "Good. Then at least he has… you…" With that, she slumped, no longer breathing. Vergil could hear the sound of glass shattering and could sense the barrier falling with her death. Minato watched, pain and grief warring in his eyes for a moment before he steadied himself. "Listen, I don't have much time, the Shinigami will have my soul soon. I need you- "He was interrupted by the sound of leaves swirling and a light breeze. Vergil turned and saw a old man dressed in black combat gear with a thick staff held in one hand. Following was the sound of more leaves and more shinobi appearing, dressed in all black with porcelain masks adorning each face. Vergil turned back to Minato, "You can tell him then, I will not know what to do with your last words, I am new to this world. I will watch over your son; you have my solemn vow." With those words, and with Minato watching in shock and pain as the weight of that revelation washed over him, Vergil turned away and drew Yamato. Noticing the old man stiffening, he quickly slashed open a portal back home.

I'm going must tell my dearest brother that I am taking all my vacation days and then some. Let him put some work in these days.

AN: And that is chapter one! Do let me know how you thought it went. I am stupid new to all this and will take any constructive criticism you have to offer. This will also probably be edited at some point, though I will notify everyone at the top of any chapter that has been edited.

(Fair warning, dialogue and combat scenes for the first while are gonna ~suck~)
