Sam, Dean, and Bobby stood around Carly with immense concern. She had been safe for only a day before she was attacked again. Bobby took a closer look to check for bites. It's possible a vampire had followed the boys, but as far as he could tell, there were no wounds other than the one she already had.
He checked for anything else that may point to what attacked her when he found something on Carly's skin. Bobby lifted her hand and found yellow powder on her fingertips. With one sniff he knew what it was, which meant things were so much worse than he originally thought.
"She was attacked by a demon." Bobby said, lifting Carly's hand into the boys' view. "There's sulfur on her fingertips."
"Why would a demon attack her?" Dean asked.
"I don't know…" Bobby shrugged.
"Did the demon possess her?" Sam asked.
Bobby checked for signs of possession. Carly's skin was cold and clammy...eyes darting back and forth under her eyelids...her pulse slow and steady, yet more stuttery than normal. All these signs could be that of a nightmare or catching a cold, but the icing on the cake was the dusting of sulfur on her lips.
Bobby looked back at the boys with a nod. "The demon is still within her."
"Then why hasn't the demon taken control and tried to hurt us?" Dean asked.
"I don't think the demon wants us. I think it wants to speak to Carly alone. Within her head, she can't get away until it allows her to leave," Bobby admitted.
"So what do we do? Should we put her inside a demon trap just to be safe?" Sam asked.
"Good plan. This demon may still attack if we let our guard down," Bobby agreed.
Bobby had a demon trap painted on the living room ceiling, which helped make the situation easier. Dean grabbed a chair as Sam and Bobby helped Carly into it. They tied her to the chair and prayed the demon couldn't break out of the constraints. Dean and Bobby went into the kitchen as Sam kneeled beside her.
He took her hand in his. "Carly, I'm sorry. You lose everyone you care about and now you get possessed by a demon. I shouldn't have left you alone...I hope you can forgive me."
Within Carly's mind, she found herself lying upon the floor. She shot to her feet, finding herself in a place she thought she'd never see again...her home. Carly looked around in confusion when she saw a figure walk past the doorway. Part of her told her to stay put, but the other part wanted to follow.
Carly ran into the hall and found the figure disappear around the edge of the staircase. She ran up the stairs and into another hallway to find the figure stepping into a bedroom...her bedroom. Carly followed the figure into the room to find it standing over a crib.
She maneuvered around the back so she could see the face of the figure and sadly, it was the man she had so many nightmares about. This is when what happened in Bobby's yard came flooding back in. Carly was unconscious and this was all in her head.
She opened her mouth to speak when he beat her to it. "You know you were a cute child. A child who deserved better parents than the ones you were wracked with. I mean even before I killed your mother I saw the mistreatment they forced upon you. I may be a demon, but even I have feelings."
"Are we just here to relive the nightmare you always cause?" Carly asked, his eyes meeting hers. "I run up here to find you by my crib. Mother walks in to see what's the matter and you kill her, pinning her to the ceiling like a party balloon animal. Then the room is consumed with flames as I wake up screaming?"
"No, not this time, even though that is a classic. I'm here because I'd like to speak to you without the Winchesters listening in. They don't like me too much since I took their parents and poor ole Jessica from them," he admitted.
His words hit like a truck. "You're the demon that they've been hunting…"
"Yes, the name is Azazel." he smiled with a slight bow. Carly's hand flew out to slap him, but he caught her hand mid-air. "That's no way to treat a friend."
He flicked his wrist, throwing Carly backward into the wall without even touching her. She tried to lift her arms but they flew back like magnets to metal. Azazel approached with a smile, scanning Carly up and down with his eyes.
"You know you were one of the first special children I ever made. This plan came to me and I went around picking children I thought would fit the bill for what I needed. Yet, you're a late bloomer. The other's abilities have already begun to take hold, but you're different. Your abilities have stayed dormant...unlike Sam's."
"Special children? Abilities? What the hell are you talking about? What does Sam have to do with any of this?" she asked, trying to break free.
"You don't know, do you?" Azazel asked, a smile playing across his lips.
"Know what?" Carly asked with concern.
Azazel leaned in close. "Sam is special like you. Both of you have abilities given to you by me. Sam has these premonitions connected to me and my special children, but he will grow stronger and have more abilities than you can ever imagine...and then there's you. Your ability is one of my favorites and quite useful, but it hasn't been activated yet, which I can fix."
"You're lying!" Carly spat.
"Why do you think I killed your mothers?" Azazel asked, pointing to the baby in the crib. "I killed them because I was interrupted with giving you power. It was simple...just a few drops of my blood and that was all that was needed to change you."
"Blood?" Carly asked, feeling her stomach fall to the floor. "You put demon blood in me?!"
"Yes, and more of it will strengthen your gifts. In your case, it should awaken them inside of you. You deserve a fighting chance," Azazel explained.
He stepped forward, cutting his wrist with his nail. She saw the blood and tried to fight the grip he had on her, but he was in control and there was nothing she could do.
"Don't do this please," Carly begged.
Azazel laughed at her pleading. "If I don't, you have no chance of beating the others. In the end, this is the best option."
"Beat the others? What are you talking about?" Carly asked.
"Don't worry. You'll find out soon enough."
He grabbed hold of Carly's head and pushed her mouth against his wrist. She tried to keep her mouth closed, but eventually, the pressure caused her lips to part. The iron liquid came into her mouth, sliding down her throat. The second a drop hit her stomach she felt something within her mind opening as if a lock was unlatching. Excruciating pain filled her entire body as if electricity was coursing through her veins; hot and sizzling.
Azazel pulled back as Carly felt warm and cold all at the same time. Her entire body was buzzing and she couldn't get the taste out of her mouth. Azazel took a step back, his wound stitching itself back up like it was never there at all. Suddenly, the entire room began to shake as Carly fell from the wall and onto the floor.
She rose up, noticing a look in Azazel's eyes. "What's happening?"
"The Winchesters have us within a demon trap. I believe they are trying to expel me from your body. My work here is done, but I might as well say hello," he smiled.
Azazel grabbed Carly by the shoulders as a black mist escaped from his lips. The mist traveled from his mouth to hers. It went down her throat and saturated her entire body, her vision going entirely black.
Sam and Dean stood beside Bobby as he recited the incantation to expel the demon from Carly's body. As they did, she began to shake and shutter, painful gasps escaping her lips. Sam wanted to stop him, but Dean said to leave it alone. Bobby continued as Carly woke up with eyes as yellow as the sun.
"Azazel…" Sam muttered.
"Hello, Samuel. It's nice to see you again," Azazel said, causing Carly to smile.
"Why did you possess her? What's your plan?" Dean asked.
"Well, I wanted to have a chat with Carly without you boys listening in of course." Her smile turned smug. "It was lovely actually."
"Why would you need to talk to Carly?" Sam asked with concern smothering his features.
"Well, that's something Carly can tell you herself. I don't want to spoil all the surprises," Azazel said.
Bobby, annoyed by the demon, began to recite the spell once again. Carly shuttered at his words and her eyes glared toward him. Her head slightly moved back and forth in a slow shaking motion.
"I would stop if I were you." Azazel laughed, a vicious grin playing across Carly's lips. "You don't want to hurt the nice packaging, do you?"
"Get out of her or so help me god!" Sam threatened, stepping forward.
The demon laughed aloud. "What will you do, Samuel? You can't do anything while I'm in here. Just break the barrier and I'll leave."
"How do we know you aren't just lying?" Dean asked.
"You don't, but if you continue that incantation I will hurt her within this barrier. I don't think you want me to do that, do you?" Azazel threatened.
They looked at one another before Bobby continued. Azazel laughed as he began to recite an incantation of his own. The room shook around them, causing the ceiling to crack, which in turn broke the barrier. Once it was broken, Carly ripped through the ropes with ease.
She rose to her feet, throwing the three into the walls, sticking them there like glue. Carly approached Sam and smiled at him. He tried to get loose, but they both knew it was no use.
"Samuel, don't test me. You may be my favorite, but my patience does wane," Azazel warned.
"What do you want, Azazel? What are you planning?" Sam spat.
"Well, if I told you that then it wouldn't be a surprise, now would it?" Azazel said, moving back from Sam.
Azazel smiled at Sam one last time before Carly faced the ceiling. A black mist shot out of her mouth like a billowing volcano before exiting out the back door. When the mist was gone, she collapsed onto the floor and the other three fell from the wall.
Sam ran to Carly's side and pulled her into his lap, making sure there were no serious injuries. The other two approached with immense confusion on their faces.
"Now what the hell was that?" Dean asked, looking to the other two for answers. "Why would Azazel possess Carly? I mean she's just a girl from Wisconsin."
"Maybe, she isn't just a girl," Bobby said.
Sam's gaze met his. "What do you mean?"
"Well, think about it." Bobby said, moving so he could look at both of the boys. "Carly is the same age as Sam, her mother died when she was young, and Azazel wanted to talk to her alone. Doesn't that sound like…she's a special child?"
"We save her from vampires and then Azazel just appears out of nowhere. Why now?!" Dean exclaimed.
"Maybe...he planned it." Bobby said with realization. "He could've convinced the vampires to attack Carly and her friends. He knew Sam and Carly would have a connection, which meant he would stop at nothing to save her life."
"Before we jump to conclusions, can we please wait until Carly wakes up." Sam muttered, looking down at her. "Maybe, her mother died because of some natural cause and Azazel did this to mess with us."
"Sam, I don't think that's the case here...it just…" Bobby began
"Please!" Sam snapped, causing Bobby to jump. "I want to hold out some hope she isn't cursed. Can we please just wait until she wakes up before we say she's evil...like me."
