"He lied to you!" Bobby yelled with conviction. "Crossroad deals are absolute, Carly. Once Dean made the deal, there is no going back. Azazel doesn't have the power to reverse it."
Carly looked toward Azazel as he shook his head. "They're lying. Do you think they would tell you there's another way? They want you to stop, but you know what the right choice is."
She looked toward the gun and then back at the others. Her resolution was breaking as she hesitated.
"Carly, I love you," Sam said, her gaze meeting his. "I know you don't want Dean to suffer for you, but doing this will make things so much worse. I love you...please don't twist that gun."
Carly looked down at the gun, toward Sam, and then back again. With a sigh, she pulled her hand off the handle and took a step back. The movement caused Azazel to laugh almost manically.
"Oh Carly, you really shouldn't have done that," Azazel said.
He flipped his wrist and flung Carly down upon one of the gravestones. Her back collided with the cement with a crack. She laid there gasping for the air that was just pushed from her lungs. Sam tried to fight against Azazel's hold so he could go to her, but he didn't have the strength to break free.
Jake walked up to the door and placed his hand on the handle, Dean yelling at him. "You don't want to do this!"
"I get an army to control, who wouldn't want that," Jake said, glaring back at them. "I've always fought on the side of good and lost many friends doing it. Maybe fighting for evil will give me an advantage."
When Carly hit the gravestone, all the breath was knocked from her lungs, but she was still awake and not stuck like the others. She noticed a knife near Bobby's foot, which he probably dropped when he hit the tree. Carly crawled over and grasped the knife in her hand. She rose onto wobbly feet.
The others were focused on Jake and what he was about to do, so they didn't notice Carly sneak around the side of the mausoleum. She got right beside Jake before he even had a clue. This time she wasn't going to lose.
"Jake," Carly said.
Jake turned to face her. "What?"
"I didn't appreciate being stabbed," Carly said, holding the knife up in her hand. "I think it's time to return the favor."
Before Jake could react, Carly embedded the blade in his stomach in almost the exact same spot he'd stabbed her. Jake looked down at the knife as he wretched it from his flesh, blood cascading down his shirt and pants leg. As he collapsed, Jake bumped the gun, which in turn unlocked the door. This distracted Azazel enough that he dropped Bobby, Sam, and Dean from their trapped state. Seconds later, the hell gate burst open, knocking Carly backward onto the grass.
The door flung open as spirits, demons, and other creatures of the dark came out onto land. Everyone ran up to the hell gate and tried pushing the door closed, but even with all their strength it wouldn't budge. Dean looked back to notice Azazel trying to flee. He wouldn't let him get away, not again. Dean wedged the colt from the door and ran after the monster.
Dean got up close to Azazel when the demon stopped running. Azazel turned around with a smile. He tilted his head as that smile went sadistic.
"Never sneak up on a demon," Azazel said.
He threw Dean into a nearby gravestone and as he hit, the colt flung out of his hand, landing a few feet away. Dean turned to look at Azazel as he became stuck to the grave. Azazel crouched down in front of him with a smirk.
"Did you see what Carly did to Jake? That was really cold, wasn't it?" Azazel taunted.
"Shut up," Dean muttered, reaching for the colt.
"Are you sure what you brought back is 100% Carly? I mean she was in hell for only a short time, but time down there works differently. She may not remember it but hours up here is days, maybe weeks. Are you sure her soul isn't damaged?" Azazel asked as they both looked at Carly.
Dean wouldn't listen to his taunts. "Even if she is damaged, at least she isn't a demon like you,"
Sam noticed Azazel pinning Dean against the grave and he had to do something. He left Bobby and Carly at the door to help Dean. As he ran over, Azazel rose to his feet, flinging Sam into another grave when he got in close distance.
"Sammy, my favorite child. I have so many plans for you, you can't even imagine," Azazel said, walking up to Sam as Dean still reached for the colt.
"I will fight against whatever you have planned and you'll be defeated," Sam spat.
"Oh, Sammy. Even if I lose, the plans I have go above me in ways you cannot fathom. Besides, I highly doubt you can save yourself and your precious Carly. Honestly, I'm happy you brought her back. It makes things so much easier in the end," Azazel said.
"If you touch her, so help me God!" Sam said, struggling against the gravestone.
Azazel laughed aloud. "All my special children have a purpose. You and Carly are the last ones left, the most special in my eyes. You two will do great things. The children with demon blood coursing through their veins."
"I don't think you're going to be here to carry out those plans," Dean said.
Azazel turned around to find the colt in Dean's hands. He cocked the barrel, which only had one bullet left. Azazel moved away from Sam with crossed arms, his brow raised.
"You only have one shot, Dean. Are you sure you won't miss?" Azazel mocked.
Dean slid his finger over the trigger with a grin. "I never miss."
Dean pulled the trigger as the bullet cascaded forward, hitting Azazel in the shoulder. Suddenly, Azazel flashed yellow near his wound than in his chest, and then his entire body flashed. Two more flashes and the demon collapsed; dead.
The hold on Sam and Dean ceased as the two fell forward, breathing deeply. The two looked at each other with wide smiles. They rose to their feet and hugged one another.
The two's happy moment was short-lived when Bobby yelled for them. "A little help guys!"
Sam and Dean looked over to find Bobby and Carly trying to push the hell gate door closed as creatures pushed through. The boys ran over, Sam on Bobby's side and Dean on Carly's side. After a few minutes of pushing, they finally got the door to close and lock.
When the door clicked, the four breathed a sigh of relief. Carly was the first to ask. "How many do you think got out?"
"Hundreds at least," Bobby muttered, looking up at the night sky.
"Cleaning this up is going to be a bitch," Sam whined.
"Well, it'll give us something to do," Dean shrugged. "I'm going to talk to Bobby, why don't you two head to the car?"
Sam and Carly nodded as they left Dean and Bobby by the gate. The two walked back toward the impala in silence, neither knowing what to say. Carly was still pissed at Sam and he knew it too.
He was about to apologize when Carly spoke first. "I saw Azazel on the ground, is he...?"
"Yeah, he's dead," Sam nodded.
"Thank, God," Carly muttered.
The awkward silence started again. They made it to the car but had to wait for Dean to get inside. As they waited, Sam decided to try again.
"Carly, I'm so sorry," Sam apologized. "I just got you back and seeing you lifeless like that broke me. When I lost Jess, I couldn't save her, but I knew I could save you. I knew I could bring you back."
"By selling your soul?!" Carly exclaimed.
"I would rather have ten good years with you than not have you at all," Sam admitted, grabbing Carly's hand in his. "I have not felt like this since Jess and even with her it was never like this. When I am not with you, I feel like I can't breathe. I want to see your eyes light up in excitement, I want to see that wide gummy smile, and I want to see you happy."
"Sam…"
He took a step forward, placing his hand on her cheek. "Seeing you like that broke everything within me and I didn't know my heart could be shattered anymore than it already had, but I was wrong. I couldn't lose you, I just couldn't. Dean took my place, but if he hadn't, I would not have hesitated to give my soul away for you."
"Sam, I'm not worth that much," Carly admitted.
"You are worth that and so much more. I know you have had people step on you your entire life, but I see your worth. I see your beauty, your light, your everything. You are worth fighting for and I would do it again and again. I love you, Carly and I mean that with everything I have," Sam confessed.
Carly stood there in shock for a moment, tears coming to her eyes. For a second, Sam thought he had said something wrong and upset her, but the tears weren't of sadness. A smile appeared on her lips as she tried her best to wipe the tears away.
"I love you too,"
She leaned forward and kissed him. Sam kissed her back, softly at first, and then with a swift gradation of intensity that made Carly cling to him as if she couldn't stand without his grasp. His insistent mouth was parting her shaking lips, sending wild tremors along her nerves, evoking from her sensations she had never known she was capable of. The motion of their lips sent electricity through their entire bodies. They wanted this to continue forever, but Dean had to interrupt.
"Alright, stop making out. I think I may puke from the cuteness," Dean joked.
The two pulled back, awkwardly taking a step away from one another. Sam changed the subject. "Where's Bobby?"
"He went home to get supplies to protect himself from the monsters that came out of the gate," Dean explained.
Sam nodded as Dean walked around the car to unlock it. When he had, Carly got in the back and Sam decided to get in the front with Dean so she could sleep and they could talk. Dean pulled out of the grass and got back onto the main road. He had no idea where they would go, but anywhere but here would work. Carly had fallen asleep an hour into the drive, so Sam used this chance to talk to Dean.
"Dean, how are we going to fix this?" Sam asked.
Dean shook his head. "I don't know if there's a fix, Sammy."
"There has to be something we can do. This was something I wanted to do, but now you are stuck with the consequences," Sam said.
"Don't worry, we have a year to figure this out and if we don't, then it was worth it. Seeing you happy is all I need," Dean reassured.
