The three prepared for the end as they squeezed their eyes shut. When they reopened them, they expected to see Heaven or Hell, but instead, they were on a plane. They looked around with confusion as the plane shook heavily, Carly glancing out the window to see a bright light shooting up into the sky. No one else on the plane seemed to notice, whether that was due to it being invisible or something entirely different they couldn't be sure.
The plane landed with no hiccups, aside from some turbulence. The three found themselves in the parking lot, still not understanding how they got on that plane. What made things even weirder was the Impala was parked on the other end of the lot. They had an inkling it was Castiel who rescued him, but they couldn't be sure.
When the three were away from people and calmed down from what had just occurred, the silence was thick with awkwardness. Sam felt guilty as hell with Dean and Carly being angry, so angry it made them sick to their stomachs.
Carly and Dean started for the car with Sam trailing behind. Halfway there, Sam spoke. "Can we talk about what just happened?"
"What is there to talk about, Sammy? You started the apocalypse," Dean muttered, keeping his back to Sam.
"I didn't mean to. I didn't know that was going to happen!" Sam insisted.
Carly turned around and snapped. "I told you it would happen, but you didn't listen, did you? Lilith is dead, but now the devil himself is released. What do you think will happen now? How many will die because you couldn't listen to me?"
"I…"
Carly shook her head. "Don't."
She turned her back on Sam and made her way to the car. Sam tried to go after her, but Dean placed a hand on his chest to stop him.
"Leave her be," Dean said.
"I should…"
"Apologize?" Dean finished with a sigh. "Sam this isn't an issue a simple sorry can fix. I don't know exactly what you did to her, aside from kidnapping her and drinking her blood from the looks of her neck, but a simple 'I'm sorry" ain't going to solve it."
"I didn't mean to do any of this. I just wanted to kill Lilith," Sam insisted.
"I know, Sammy. We should've told you why we locked you up, but we thought it better to wait until you were clear minded. If we told you when you were high on blood, you may not listen and that is exactly what happened. Carly tried to warn you, but you wouldn't listen," Dean said.
Sam took a step forward. "How can I fix this? Please just tell me how I can fix this."
"I don't know if you can fix this," Dean sighed with a shrug. "What you did was not some little hiccup. You hurt Carly, you hurt Bobby, and worst of all you started the apocalypse, Sammy. That isn't something you can just forget and forgive. I just don't think I...can trust you."
Sam's eyes rose to meet his with shock. "Dean…"
"I think it's time to head back to Bobby's."
Without another word, Dean turned around and made his way toward the car where Carly was waiting patiently. He found the door unlocked with the keys resting on the seat. Dean got in the drivers, Carly in the passenger, and Sam slid into the back. The ride was in utter silence, the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
A few hours into the drive, Sam fell asleep. Dean peered back at him before his attention turned toward Carly. "Are you okay?"
"Far from it," Carly muttered.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Carly sighed, looking down at her feet. "Sam…he...he drank my blood against my will and tried to make me drink the blood of a demon Ruby had kidnapped."
"And...did you drink the demon's blood?" Dean asked.
"No, Sam forced my mouth against the demon's neck and the blood got into my mouth, but I fought out of his grasp and spit the blood back in Ruby's face. I knew the power I could receive from just one sip, but if I ended up like Sam then I'd rather be powerless than a bloodthirsty...monster," Carly explained.
"I'm glad you didn't go down that path," Dean muttered.
Carly looked over at him with immense concern. "What are we going to do, Dean? I mean he started the apocalypse. Is there any way we can truly get out of this or is this the end?"
Dean returned her gaze with a shrug. "I don't know. I really don't know…"
The silence returned as Dean picked up the pace. The goal was to get back to Bobby's and figure something out, whatever that something may be. In honesty, Dean had no clue what to do next. He thought he'd get to Sam before this happened. He never thought of failing and what the consequences of that would be.
When they arrived, Sam was still asleep. Whether he was actually asleep or faking it to avoid confrontation, neither Carly nor Dean could be sure. They left him in the Impala nonetheless, when they went to talk to Bobby. They found him drinking at the kitchen table, looking angry and sad all at once.
When he saw Carly, he rose from the table, setting his beer down to bring her in for a hug. She squeezed him back just as tight.
"I'm so glad you're alright," Bobby muttered.
Carly smiled against his shoulder. "Yeah, you too."
Bobby moved back and hugged Dean just as tight. Then he offered Dean and Carly to take a seat. The two did so and Bobby could tell, by the look on their faces, what had happened.
"He killed Lilith, didn't he?" Bobby asked.
Dean and Carly nodded, Dean speaking for the both of them. "We tried, but we couldn't get through to him before it was too late."
"How did you guys manage to get out?" Bobby asked. "I'm guessing opening the cage to the devil wasn't some simple lock breaking."
Carly sighed. "We got out because…"
"Because I got them out last minute." Castiel said, appearing beside the table. "I tried to intervene sooner, but Lilith and Ruby were blocking me. When they died, I could get through. I teleported them onto a nearby flight and made sure the Impala was waiting for them at arrival."
"What are we going to do guys?" Carly asked, looking around at each of them. "How are we going to stop this?"
"I don't know if there is a way to stop this. This was long foretold and the angels have been planning this for centuries, demons the same. Now that I have defied them I will be shut out from anything they plan, I will be hunted just like the rest of you," Castiel warned.
"Then what are we going to do?" Carly asked.
"The best thing to do now is to ward yourselves and lay low. I will do my best to avoid capture and figure out what is going on, getting back to you when I find out," Castiel said.
"How are you going to ward us?"
They all turned back to look in the open doorway to find Sam standing there with red, puffy eyes from crying. In any other circumstance Carly and Dean would be worried, but their anger outweighed that worry.
Castiel met his gaze with a sigh. "I have to carve enochian symbols into your ribs. This will make you harder for the angels to detect and then I suggest using demon wards where you plan to stay as you may not be able to be possessed due to your tattoos, but that doesn't mean they can't hurt you."
"How do you plan to carve symbols into our bones?" Carly asked with a raised brow.
"Simple."
Castiel's hand flew forward, landing upon Sam's chest. Sam followed the movement with his eyes, but before he could speak, Castiel's hand lit up. As it did, Sam's body tensed up with a painful gasp, falling to his knees when Castiel removed his palm.
The sight of Sam's pain made Carly and Dean look toward one another with hesitation, but in the end, it was probably for the best. So, one at a time, the two approached Castiel and let him carve the symbols. He offered for Bobby just in case and he agreed. Once they were carved, the three sat back down, Sam going to stand against the wall in the corner.
"I suggest putting the wards up as soon as possible. I will return in a few days time with anything I discover," Castiel said, turning to leave.
Carly stepped forward, grabbing his hand to his surprise. "Thank you."
"You are most welcome."
He vanished from the kitchen, Carly's hand falling to her side. The silence returned as Dean and Bobby went to plan the next move. Carly tried to join them when Sam spoke.
"Can I talk to you for a moment?" Sam asked.
She turned to face him. "What is there to talk about?"
"Please, just come outside with me," Sam pleaded.
"I'm not going to be alone with you for a… very long time. So, you can say whatever you have to say in here so Dean and Bobby are within earshot," Carly insisted, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Fine, I want to apologize for what I...did to you," Sam said, wringing his hands. "The more demon blood I consumed, the less I cared about anything else but killing Lilith. I focused on that and wanted to watch her suffer. Deep down I knew what I did to you was wrong, but the blood just made me not...care."
"I have dealt with people breaking down my spirit my whole life. Whether that be a bully at school or my father using my skin as an ashtray. I have held that pain and tried to fight through with a smile on my face. But I trusted you. I thought you were different, Sam. I felt safe with you like I had never felt with anyone else. Now I realize you are just like them," Carly said.
"I am different."
"Are you?" Carly asked with a shaking head. "You fed on me against my will on two different occasions and then you tried to force me to do the same to someone else. That's not something you can just say sorry about and have everything be fine. That broke whatever trust I felt with you."
"I wasn't in my right mind."
"I know you weren't and at first I told myself that. I said, 'this isn't Sam, it can't be', but the more time that passed I realized that it was you. You chose to drink the blood and you chose to make killing Lilith your number one priority, not caring who got in the way. My powers may have activated if I drank that blood, but then I'd have ended up like you," Carly admitted.
She turned away so she could go into the other room. As she took a step, Sam grabbed her hand in his grasp. Carly stopped short, turning back to look at him.
"Will you ever forgive me?" Sam asked.
She pulled her hand from his. "I don't know…"
Carly could tell her words had hurt him, but it was the truth and she wasn't going to deny it. Without turning back she went into the other room to join Bobby and Dean. It was obvious they had heard the fight, but neither were going to ask and Carly appreciated that.
They caught her up on the plan, which consisted of Dean, Carly, and Sam going to a motel across the state line in Michigan. It was run by hunters and basically a safe house in disguise for those trying to lay low. The three could stay there until something safer could be figured out. Dean offered for Bobby to come along, but he wouldn't abandon his home, not if he could help it.
The plan wasn't the best, but it worked for the time being as they had nothing else to go off of. As they talked, Carly realized that Sam never followed after her and the kitchen was abnormally quiet. She left the two and went back into the kitchen to find the door wide open with a piece of paper folded in half strewn across the table.
Carly took it into her hand and returned to the living room. When they saw her, they knew something was wrong.
"What happened?" Dean asked.
"I found this," Carly said, holding up the piece of paper.
Dean took it from her hand and opened it. He read the note aloud.
Dear everyone,
I have decided it is best if I leave. Staying here and reminding you of what I did won't help anyone. I will be hiding out and laying low as you all do, but alone. I am sorry for all the pain I caused and I know there is nothing I can say to fix it, there may never be, but just know I am sorry...
From,
Sam
P.S. Carly, I never wanted to make you feel unwanted or unsafe, but that is exactly what I ended up doing. I want you to know that I did care about you more than I have for anyone else in a long time, but my own selfish self ruined that. I hope you do find happiness because you deserve to smile.
When Dean finished reading, he crumbled the note tight in his hand. As he did, Carly, Bobby and Dean looked toward the open door.
