Dean helped Carly back onto her feet as she gritted her teeth in pain. With a deep breath, the three readied their weapons and snuck around back. Dean prepared to break the lock when he pulled on the handle and it opened with ease. That was either really good luck or Famine knew they were coming.
The three hoped for the first option as they entered the back of the diner into the kitchen. They tiptoed in and ducked behind the counter, peeking over top to see Famine surrounded by men in suits. The sight of him surprised them as he was in a wheelchair and feeble in nature. If they got through the guards, they could take him out easily.
Their confidence left just as fast as it arrived when Castiel disappeared from their side. Carly and Dean looked at one another as demons appeared behind them. They grabbed the back of Carly and Dean's shirts and threw them over the counter, crashing into the floor with all the air being knocked from their lungs.
When they pulled themselves up, those same demons came up behind them, pulling their arms behind their backs. Castiel was near Famine eating out of a tray of raw meat. The two tried to break free but the demon's grip was stronger than they originally thought.
"Why are you doing this?" Dean asked.
Famine met his gaze with a smile. "Because America is all you can eat, all the time. Consume, consume... And yet, you're all still starving, because hunger doesn't just come from the body, it comes from the soul."
"Well, I don't feel any effects," Dean snapped.
Famine rolled forward and placed a hand on Dean's chest. Heat radiated through his fingertips as pain shot through Dean's entire body. He gritted his teeth as he fought against the demons holding onto him. When Famine removed his hand, Dean was gasping for air.
Famine shook his head with a sigh. "That's one deep dark…nothing you've got there Dean. Can't fill it, not with food, or drink, not even with sex."
"You're so full of crap," Dean snapped, Carly peering over at him with concern.
"Oh, you can smirk and joke and lie to your brother, lie to Carly, lie to yourself, but not to me! I can see inside you, Dean. I can see how broken you are. How defeated-you can't win! But you just keep fighting, just keep going through the motions." Famine said, his gaze meeting Dean's. "You're not hungry Dean, because inside you're already...dead."
Carly and Dean looked at one another. Carly with worry and Dean with denial. He didn't want to admit to Carly that it was true, that what Famine said was true. Yet, him being completely fine in the presence of Famine when Carly and Castiel were struggling said a lot.
"Carly on the other hand is starving. She wants to quench that fire in her gut. To be the powerful woman she knows she can be with just one sip," Famine said.
"I'd rather suffer than give in to my urges," Carly said with conviction.
Famine laughed under his breath. "Oh, I know you would. You want to be the good guy. The heroine. The martyr if need be, but you want to be a savior. You want to be on the side of light, is that it?"
"Yes."
"Well, that isn't who you're meant to be, Carly. Pushing your nature down into the depths of yourself because you're afraid is foolish. You are squandering your potential, which is why I'm going to help you with your decision."
Famine snapped as the demons holding Carly dragged her from the room. Dean fought against his captors to try and go for her as Carly struggled and screamed for the demons to let her go. Famine just laughed as Carly was pulled out of the sight.
Sam laid against the bathroom wall, gritting his teeth in pain. The hunger was growing stronger by the second, making him want to snap the chain and attack whatever demon he found first. He closed his eyes and focused on his breathing. He just had to hold back until Dean, Carly, and Castiel killed Famine and the hunger would be gone...hopefully.
He tried to listen to his heartbeat, counting the beats and tapping his finger against the floor to the rhythm of it. It was starting to work when he heard the door to the hotel room slam open. Sam knew instantly by the pain in his gut that it wasn't Dean. He tried to stay calm as the bathroom door creaked open, a woman and man walking into the room.
Sam could tell by the scent that followed them that they were demons. His mouth began to water as he bit his tongue. The man of the duo crouched down in front of Sam and looked him up and down with a smirk.
"You don't look like anything to write home about," he said.
"He's more powerful than he looks." The woman said, looking down at Sam.
"Well, let's see if he stands up to the hype," the man said.
He moved forward to undo the handcuff as Sam struggled back. "I suggest leaving the cuff alone if you want to live."
"I think I'll take my chances."
The man didn't heed Sam's warning as he broke the cuff off Sam's hand. He got to his feet as Sam did. Sam tried to hold back but he could smell the blood in their veins and he wanted it...bad.
His gaze met the man's as he kicked him out of the bathroom into the dresser on the other side of the wall. Then Sam bashed his hand into the mirror, shattering the glass as it fell around him. He grabbed a large shard of glass and slashed the woman's throat.
Before Sam had a chance to drink, the man tackled Sam into the main room. The two fought as the woman grabbed an angel blade from her waistband and went for Sam when his back was turned. He twisted around and she instead stabbed her cohort whose eyes and mouth lit up before he collapsed onto the floor.
Sam looked up from the body and stepped over it, approaching the woman. She stumbled backward and tried to stab him, but he grabbed her arm midair and wretched the blade from her grasp. Sam grabbed her by the throat and slammed her back into the wall, causing a painting to fall onto the floor.
The demon's confidence from earlier vanished entirely as she begged. "Please, don't do this."
"I thought I wasn't anything to write home about?" Sam asked.
"My partner was wrong. Just please let me go," she begged.
"And why would I do such a thing?" Sam asked.
"To save Carly."
The second the words left the demon's mouth, Sam's anger turned to worry. "What do you mean?"
"Famine knew that they'd leave you behind, that's why he sent us to take care of you, but he has different plans for Carly," she admitted, meeting Sam's gaze. "He plans to undormatize Carly's powers. He wants to force her to give in to her urges."
"No," Sam muttered.
"If you go now, you might have a chance to save her."
Sam nodded, letting the demon go. She smiled before making her way toward the door. Before she made it to the hall, Sam lifted his hand into the air and threw the blade into the demon's back, the meat suit falling to the floor.
Carly was dragged into the back room with the two demons coming in with her and locking the door behind them. Carly tried to fight back against them and she got a few good punches in, but without a weapon, they had the advantage in size and strength.
One demon came up behind Carly and pinned her arms behind her back as the other cut his wrist open with a broken beer bottle. She struggled her damn hardest but the demon pressed his wrist upon her lips as she tried to keep her mouth closed. Eventually, the pressure and the need to breathe made her open her lips.
The blood came into her mouth and she tried to pull back to spit it out as she had done with Marie, but the demon wasn't budging and he wouldn't move until she swallowed. Carly closed her eyes with a tear as she drank. After the first sip, a warm feeling began to replace the pain within her stomach, which slowly consumed every part of her body.
Then it was as if a lock was shattered within in her mind because with the warmth came this other feeling. A tingly type of feeling as if electricity was coursing through her veins. The more she drank, the stronger this feeling became and she liked it...a lot.
When he pulled back with a painful gasp, Carly wanted more. She kept her gaze on him as she threw the demon holding onto her arms into the opposite wall. Her smile widened as she lunged at the demon in front of her, tackling him onto the floor.
She bit into his neck and used her teeth to draw blood. He struggled to get her off of him but she was the stronger one now. She fed until he could barely move and then she did the same to the other demon, feeding until he was too weak to fight back.
She rose to her feet and approached the door, using her foot to kick the metal door down. She stepped over one of the bodies, making her way back into the room. Famine and Dean were talking when she entered.
Neither of them noticed her until she spoke. "Let them go!"
Famine's gaze met Carly's with a proud smile. Dean was pulled back toward Castiel so he could get a good view of Carly. She had blood upon her lips and a dark glint to her eyes, even Dean could sense the power radiating off of her and his stomach hit the floor.
"Carly no…" Dean muttered.
She looked toward him with some guilt but that guilt was outweighed by the hatred that coursed through her. The demons standing beside Famine went to attack but he stopped them.
"No one lays a finger on this sweet little girl. Don't worry. You're not like everyone else. You'll never die from drinking too much. You're the exception that proves the rule. Just the way...Satan wanted you to be. So…" Famine began, lifting his hands to gesture to the demons guarding him. "...cut their throats. Have at them!"
Carly shook her head slowly as her hand flew into the air toward the demons. She looked at each of them with a sadistic grin as she brought her hand into a fist. As she did, smoke began to bellow from their throats, their meat suits collapsed to the floor. Dean was free but he stayed where he was.
She looked from the smoke to Famine himself. "No."
"Well...fine. If you don't want them...then I'll have them."
Famine smiled as he began to suck the air around him. As he did, the smoke flew upward into his mouth. He swallowed it all and smiled at the taste. When his gaze returned to Carly, her hand had risen once again and this time it was pointed at him.
Famine laughed aloud. "I'm a horseman, Carly. Your power doesn't work on me."
"You're right. But it will work on them."
Her hand lowered to point at his stomach and with the twist of her wrist, Famine began to cough and wheeze. His stomach moved around as if a monster was inside. Sam ran into the diner as blood dripped from Carly's nose. Her hand rose, clenching her fist as Famine exploded into dust, his ring clattering to the floor.
Castiel rose from the tray of meat, wiping his face. Dean grabbed the ring and put in his pocket as Sam came to stand beside them. All three looked toward Carly with worry.
Dean approached and placed his hand on Carly's shoulder. "Carly, are you okay?"
She looked up to meet his gaze but it was clearly obvious the high of blood was still in control as her smile went sadistic. Carly grabbed his hand and twisted it in the wrong direction, throwing it back at himself. Then she raised both hands into the air and moved them toward the three, flinging them back into the tables.
She walked out of the diner, whispering under her breath. "Better than ever."
