Dean helped Carly into the motel room and onto a bed. She merely sat down as a slamming knock sounded upon the wood of the door. Sam grabbed his gun and slowly approached, Dean sitting beside Carly in case she needed to be protected. Sam threw the door open to find a worse for wear Castiel on the other side.
Sam quickly placed his gun on the small table near the TV and helped Castiel onto the other bed. He was cut up, bruised, and each breath wracked his body with pain. He honestly looked like hell and Dean was the first to point that out.
"You look like crap," Dean said, looking Castiel up and down.
"Well, taking on six angels all on your own will do that to you," Castiel muttered, pulling himself up, so he could lean against the headboard. "But seeing as you all made it here, it was worth it."
"So, what's our next move?" Sam asked, taking a seat at one of the small chairs at the table.
Castiel sighed before meeting Sam's gaze. "Well, we need to defeat Death and grab his ring. We have that then we have the key for Lucifer. He can be thrown back into hell with no battle ever having to take place."
Carly and Dean shared a look, knowing what throwing him back in involved. Neither said anything as they went back to focusing on the conversation at hand. Yet, both knew they should've spoken.
"How do we even find Death? I highly doubt he's just walking around," Sam said.
"Actually, he sent me a message to say he wants to meet," Castiel admitted.
"Like a fire message from Harry Potter?" Dean asked with a raised brow.
Castiel looked at him with annoyance. "I don't understand that reference but he did not contact me through a message of fire. He texted my cellular device."
"Death texts?" Carly asked with surprise.
"Yes, and he is willing to meet, but only with Carly."
Sam, Castiel, and Dean all looked toward Carly. She glanced around at their gazes and shrugged. "Why would he want to meet with just me?"
"He did not specify and I did not ask. He wants to meet tomorrow night at a cafe a few towns over. I have the address and the time, Carly just has to show up," Castiel explained.
"What if it's a trap?" Dean asked.
"It may very well be, but It's better to go than to make Death angry. Of the four horsemen, from what I've heard, he is the most understanding. He just wants to talk with Carly. We three can wait outside and if something happens, we'll step in," Castiel said.
"But Carly is weak," Sam insisted, motioning to Carly's shaking hands. "If it is a trap, she wouldn't have the strength to fight back. Wouldn't it be better if one of us went in her stead?"
Castiel shook his head. "No, he specifically asked for Carly and so she will go. We do not want this to go off the rails if we can help it. Carly must go."
"I'm fine," Carly grunted, clutching her stomach with squinted eyes.
"No, you're not." Dean said, looking back at the others. "We need to get her demon blood."
"What?!" Sam asked a little too loudly.
"She's in pain because she needs blood. We give her that and her strength will return. Then she won't have any problem protecting herself," Dean explained.
"But she'll just go off the deep end all over again like I did," Sam insisted.
"No, she won't," Dean said, getting to his feet to face the three. "When I found her, she was high on demon blood, but she wasn't out of control like you had been. I reasoned with her. She has more control and I trust her."
Carly's weak gaze met Dean's confident one. He truly trusted her and that made her smile. She wasn't as keen on the idea as he was but being weak when meeting Death was not a good idea and they all knew that.
"So, what do you want to do? Go get a demon off the street and cut them open like a juice box?" Sam asked, the anger rising up within himself.
"What's your problem?" Dean asked.
"All of you are!" Sam yelled, motioning to the three. "When I was detoxing, you locked me up and with Carly, you want her to give in to her urges. How does that make any goddamn sense?!"
"Because we realized detoxing doesn't work!" Dean yelled back. "Now that you've fully detoxed, yes you're back to being you, but while in the process you attacked Carly and started the damn apocalypse! I am not going to risk Carly losing her mind at a time like this. When this is all over, we can figure something out, but for now, this is the best answer. If you aren't comfortable with it, you can wait outside."
"Gladly."
Sam stormed out of the motel room, slamming the door behind him. The slam caused Carly to jump, Dean running to sit by her and rub her shoulders to tell her it was okay. Castiel was on the fence about this idea, but if Dean believed it would work then he was willing to try.
"So, how are we going to do this?" Castiel asked, moving to sit on the edge of the bed.
"I know what to do," Carly muttered.
She shakingly got off the bed and walked to the end. Dean watched with worry and was ready to catch her if she fell. Carly took a deep breath and closed her eyes tight. Under her breath, she whispered a name. She continually did this until she reopened her eyes to find Marie standing in front of her.
When Carly saw her, she smiled and started to fall, Marie catching her. Marie helped Carly back onto the bed when she noticed Castiel on the other one. They shared a look of discomfort, but neither said a word, Marie's full attention was on Carly.
"What happened?" Marie asked, looking Carly up and down with worry.
Dean got up from the bed to stand beside her. "A few demons forced Carly to consume demon blood, which undormitized her powers."
"I'm so sorry," Marie whispered, squeezing Carly's hand.
"Thanks," Carly muttered, a small smile playing across her lips.
Dean cleared his throat and continued to explain. "She hasn't had blood in over a day and it's weakened her. She needs her strength to meet with someone powerful and...that's where you come in. In any other circumstance, we would try to detox her entirely, so she could go back to normal, but in the end, trying to learn control over this may be the better option."
"You're worried she'll act like Sam did when he was detoxing, am I right?" Marie said, her gaze meeting Dean's.
Dean nodded silently, knowing Sam may be listening through the door. Marie looked from Dean to Carly with a sigh. "I don't think giving in to her urges is a great plan but if you believe it is the only option, I am willing to help."
"It is the only option," Castiel said, butting into the conversation. "She needs her strength for what is to come."
"Well, then I will gladly open a vein," Marie said, looking at Dean and Castel. "But could we have some privacy?"
"Oh, yeah sure."
Dean helped Castiel up and they went outside into the parking lot. As Marie closed the door, you could hear Sam and Dean beginning to bicker. Marie ignored this and made her way back over to Carly who was still sitting at the end of the bed. She took a seat beside Carly and looked her over.
"You know you look like crap," Marie pointed out.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Carly said, both looking at each other with a smile.
Marie grabbed the sleeve of her sweater and rolled it up to her elbow. Then she swiped her nail across her wrist, blood pooling on the surface. Carly's eyes locked onto it with need. Marie offered it to Carly as she grabbed it in both her hands and pressed the wound to her lips, the taste exploding in her mouth.
The second she swallowed, the fire in her gut began to dim as if the blood was water to the flames. Each sip made the strength return, the color to her face brighten, and cause electricity to shoot through her veins. When she felt Marie pinch her hand, she instantly let go while breathing deeply.
The wound on Marie's wrist healed as she rolled her sleeve back down, Carly wiping her lips clean as she did. Marie looked a little pale but Carly hadn't taken enough to hinder her in any way, other than maybe some dizziness. Carly took another deep breath as Marie peered over at her, which Carly noticed.
"What?" Carly asked, looking back at her.
"You're just so peculiar," Marie muttered.
Carly raised a brow. "Is that a good thing?"
"In this case yes," Marie said, laughing under her breath. "I mean when Sam drank demon blood it slowly took control of him and when he was detoxed and drank even more he went off the deep end. Yet, not you. You've had demon blood but you haven't lost your humanity. You're different, yes, but not unrecognizable."
"That's because I have someone who won't give up on me," Carly said, looking out the curtained window to see a shadowed Sam and Dean still bickering.
"So, you two have finally admitted your feelings?" Marie asked.
Carly looked at her with shock. "How did you know about that?"
"It was clear as day when Dean had to kiss you to stop that panic attack. The look you both shared afterward spoke volumes. I said nothing at the time because it wasn't my place, but I'm glad you took that leap. In these dark times, love is really all we have," Marie said, looking down at her feet with a smile.
"Do you find it weird that you cannot see him?" Carly asked, Marie meeting her gaze. "Your love I mean. Isn't it weird having him in your mind?"
"At first, yeah, but honestly it's become a comfort. When I am in trouble, he aids and soothes my fears. I never feel truly alone as he is always with me," Marie said.
"How did you two meet? If you don't mind me asking," Carly said.
"It's no problem," Marie said with a smile. "Matthew had been a demon for quite some time and grew tired of the torment and pain. He didn't want to hurt people, he wanted to help, so he possessed someone who had no plan to continue living and turned that person's life around. In the end, he became a doctor to heal the humans rather than harm them."
"Wouldn't someone from hell notice he was gone?" Carly asked.
"Matthew was a low-level demon with no importance and so no one came looking. He became quite good at what he did and was the best surgeon in my town. I had gotten in a car accident and when I was hauled to the hospital, I was covered in my own blood. My vision was blurry and everyone's words sounded like mumbles, but when he came into the room, his voice was clear. He assured me everything was going to be alright and I truly believed him," Marie explained.
"What happened next?" Carly asked.
"I went into surgery and it was touch and go for a while but I came out of it alive. He checked on me every single day to make sure I was okay and when he did, we would talk about the most random of things. By the time I could go home, we had grown so close that he asked me to dinner. We dated for almost a year before he told me his secret," Marie explained.
"And how did you react?"
"At first, I didn't believe him. I mean would you if your boyfriend told you he was an actual demon?" Marie said with a chuckle. "I didn't truly believe until he showed me his eyes and instead of fear, I felt closer to him. One day we were taking a walk when this car came out of nowhere. It hit us both but I was only minorly injured, Mathew on the other hand was near death, or at least his body was. I allowed him to possess me and then we called the police. As I cried looking down at the body he once possessed, he spoke to me and calmed me down."
"So, why didn't he find a new body after that?" Carly asked.
"Because he knew that he could protect me and we would never have to be apart."
"That sounds like you two are soulmates," Carly muttered.
"Maybe we are and maybe you've found yours too," Marie said, bumping Carly's shoulder.
Carly looked down at her feet with a sigh. "I don't think it's meant to be."
"Why?"
Before Carly could respond, the door opened with Dean, Castiel, and Sam in toe. When they saw that Carly had gotten better each had a smile on their face, even if Sam's was filled with annoyance as well. Marie met Sam's gaze and instantly took a step back to further herself from him as she took her leave. She said goodbye to Carly and disappeared from the room.
Then Dean ran to Carly's side, checking her over to make sure everything was alright. When he saw she was fine, he brought her into a hug and squeezed her tight. She did the same to him with a sad look in her eyes that Sam picked up on. He wanted to ask her about that look, but Death was waiting and they didn't want to be late.
Castiel offered to fly the three there, but they all denied as dizziness and nausea was something none of them wanted. So, the four packed into the car and went on their way. They didn't have a plan other than sending Carly in and them waiting outside in case things got hairy. Dean wanted to go in with her, but Death asked for Carly alone and they were going to oblige.
When they arrived, Dean parked the Impala across the street from the cafe. Carly got out of the car as Dean did. He hugged her once more and kissed her, a shock of electricity shooting through them both.
Dean pulled back, his gaze meeting hers. "Be careful."
"I will."
Carly squeezed Dean's hand with a small smile before turning her back to the impala and walking across the street. She may be strong due to the demon blood coursing through her veins but she was meeting with Death himself. That would make anyone nervous.
She made it to the door and wrapped her hand around the doorknob. With a sigh, she pulled the door open with the ding of a bell. She approached a man sitting at a table with no one else in sight, not even a barista. It was eerily quiet and that made Carly even more on edge.
She pulled the chair out and took a seat across from the man. He looked in his mid-fifties, black hair, a black suit, and a silver cane resting against the table's edge. He had a pastry half-eaten on the plate in front of him with a cup of black coffee beside it.
Carly scooted her chair in with a squeak, the man looking up from his plate to meet hers. He wiped the corners of his mouth with a napkin before turning his attention back to her. "You must be Carly."
"And you must be Death."
He smiled with a nod. "Indeed, it's nice to finally meet you."
"What is it you want?" Carly asked in the nicest way possible.
"I want you to throw Lucifer back into the cage."
