After a difficult week, Fenton and Ava finally returned to Duckburg. When they got back to the trailer, Fenton helped carry his daughter's things inside. "You can have my room," he told her.
"Where will you sleep?"
"On the couch."
Ava frowned. "I'm not taking your room."
"Oh, it's no big deal," he told her, cheerfully. "You need a space of your own."
Ava was still unhappy about his decision but didn't say anything else. Fenton told her, changing the subject, "After you get your stuff unpacked, what do you say we go visit Scrooge McDuck?"
"Your boss?" Ava asked, skeptically.
"Yeah! He's a swell guy. I want you to meet him and his family."
"Okay," the preteen said, unsure.
They took a cab and rode to another part of Duckburg. They stopped in front of a grandiose mansion with a fountain in the front.
Fenton knocked on the front door. It opened, and a tall dog in a suit stood in the doorway. "Hey, Duckworth!" Fenton exclaimed, cheerfully. "Is Mr. McDuck around?"
"Yes. Right this way."
Ava hesitantly followed Fenton inside the manor.
Duckworth led them to the living room, where Scrooge McDuck was sitting in an armchair, reading the newspaper. "Mr. Crackshell is here to see you, sir," Duckworth said.
"Hi, ya, Mr. McDuck!" Fenton greeted.
Scrooge didn't look that happy to see him. To Ava, he just looked like a grumpy old duck. "Good afternoon, Fenton. I see you're back from your trip."
"We sure are. Just got back this morning." He looked to see where Ava was. She was standing behind him. "Don't be shy, Ava," he told his daughter, moving out of the way. To his boss, he said, "Mr. McDuck, I want you to meet my daughter, Ava Talon."
Scrooge got up and shook Ava's hand. "Hello, Ava. Your father has told me a little bit about you."
"Hello, Mr. McDuck," Ava said, quietly. She felt uneasy but made an effort to be polite.
"You're from New Stork, aren't you, lass?"
Ava nodded. "Yes, sir."
"It's a big city. I've gone there a few times. Well, welcome to Duckburg. It's a fine place to live, once you adjust to it."
"Thank you, sir."
At that moment, three children ran into the room. They wore matching outfits, a shirt and a ball cap, but they wore different colors. One wore red, one wore blue, and the third wore green.
"Uncle Scrooge, can we go to the movies? The Giant Moths from Outer Space is playing."
"In a few minutes, boys. I want you to meet Fenton's daughter. This is Ava. Ava, these are my grand-nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie," Scrooge introduced.
The triplets' eyes widened. "Fenton, we didn't know you had a kid!"
"Boys..." Scrooge warned.
Fenton chuckled, good-naturedly. "I didn't, either, until a week ago. She's the best surprise I've ever gotten!"
The boys shrugged, not understanding what he meant.
"Say, Ava, why don't you go to the movies with Huey, Dewey, and Louie?" Fenton asked her. "You might make some friends."
"No, it's okay," Ava said.
"Ava wouldn't like The Giant Moths from Outer Space," Dewey said.
"Yeah, it's a boys' movie," agreed Louie.
"Besides, it would be too scary," Huey added.
"Sci-fi is for everybody, not just boys," Ava stated. "I just don't want to go."
"Maybe another time, then," Fenton said.
A younger, female duck walked into the room, holding a doll. She sniffled. "Uncle Scrooge, the boys said they don't want me to go to the movies with them!"
To Ava's surprise, Scrooge picked up the little girl and sat her on his lap. He said, "Webby, you're not old enough to see the movie they're going to watch. Why don't you stay here and play with your dollhouse, instead?"
"Okay, Uncle Scrooge."
After Webby went upstairs, Huey, Dewey, and Louie went to the movies. Fenton asked Ava, "You sure you don't want to go? It'd be a lot of fun."
"I'm sure," she replied, looking down.
Fenton and Ava stayed awhile longer, and Fenton and Scrooge talked. Later, Scrooge said he had some important work to do, so they left. Ava breathed a sigh of relief once they went back outside.
"So, what do you think?" Fenton asked his daughter after they got in the cab.
"About what?"
"About Mr. McDuck and his family."
"Oh...They're okay." She looked out the window.
"What's wrong, Ava? You can tell me."
"I'm just not good around people, and Mr. McDuck is...intimidating."
"Scrooge McDuck? Intimidating?" Fenton was surprised at first, then he nodded. "I guess I can see why you feel that way. He can be a little grumpy, but deep down, he's a big softie."
"If you say so."
"I know so. You just have to give people a chance." He gently patted her shoulder. "They might surprise you!"
Ava just nodded and kept looking out the cab window as they rode home.
