Chapter 6
Entering the school, Carl smiled lightly, getting ready for another day. His mind still full of the shocking revelations about Sophia's return, yet thankfully far from the momentary angst he had been dwelling on regarding his eye.
"Kept me waiting, Grimes, almost thought you weren't coming in today." A voice caught his attention.
He turned to the source, smirking. Standing there was a sixteen year old girl, slightly shorter than him with long brown hair, green eyes and pale skin, slender and clad in skater chic clothes.
Carl just shook his head. "Good morning to you too, Enid."
Shrugging Enid walked over from where she had been waiting, coming up to join him as they walked to class.
"So, what've you got planned for today?" She asked casually.
Carl paused for a moment, considering. "Ah, that's actually...you know, there's something I really should tell you."
Enid quirked an eyebrow at that. "Oh...dramatic much? You know by now you don't have do all these big build up speeches and that. We're friends Carl, you got something to say, you can just tell me."
Carl smirked at that, once more glad for the 'little reminder' of their friendship. That 'bluntness' was one of the reasons he truly valued having Enid as a friend.
They had been friends for three years. First meeting on the one year mark of Sophia's disappearance. At a time when Carl still had both eyes and was just angry at the world because of Sophia going missing. She had stepped in on a fight he had got himself into, not to save him, or anything like that, just to even the odds. They had both been caught and suspended by the Principal, but due to 'mitigating' circumstances, the suspension only lasted a couple of days, far less than the suspension faced by the ones they had fought. It had been those two who had provoked Carl after all. What had at first caused friction and anger between them, the fact that she was blunt and told Carl to his face he had to deal with his problems instead of moaning about them, soon became appreciation as Carl realized she had been right. They became fast friends just after that, sadly it didn't stop all friction or drama. At the time Enid had been dating one of Carl's friends, Ron Anderson. But he soon became suspicious of their closeness especially when Enid broke up with him. It led to him all but challenging Carl in the school parking lot one day. This time Carl kept his cool and Ron ended up the only one in trouble, although it cost both of them any positive relationship with Ron afterwards. Shortly afterwards, Enid revealed the truth to him, that she broke up with Ron because she'd finally come to terms with and accepted her sexuality. Carl did his best to express his support and they had remained friends to this day. It had finally been after he lost his eye that Carl revealed the truth to Enid about his previous anger and issues, telling her about Sophia's disappearance.
Now he began to consider recent events, the news of Sophia's return. She was right, he really should just tell her, instead of making some big build up.
'She was supportive when I told her what happened, helped me get through the worst of it. To be able to actually live again...despite still feeling so...lost about Sophia.' He reflected then shrugged. "Yeah, you're right. It's just...Remember I told you about Sophia."
"Yeah, of course." She said, expression softening.
Carl smiled. "She turned up at the hospital, early this morning. She...she's back."
Enid froze at that, causing Carl to stop as she stared, wide-eyed.
"Wh-what, really. I mean-"
"I couldn't believe it at first either." Carl replied. "But it's her, they've confirmed it. She's alive."
Enid couldn't help but grin at Carl's expression. "Wow, that's, that's great."
Carl nodded and they continued on to their class, all as Enid rolled her eyes at the sheer obviousness of Carl's joy at hearing about Sophia's return, certainly far more than one would expect merely from a friend. He still had it bad after all these years, no wonder he'd never dated and endured the taunts from other boys. He'd still been holding on to hope for Sophia. She just hoped that the poor girl's recovery would go well and that she'd give Carl a chance if he found the courage to ask.

Beth smiled lightly as she checked her phone, noting the text from her girlfriend. She was finally packing up, ready to go home and get some sleep. But before she did she wanted to do one last check. Heading to the ward she paused by the window and smiled as she looked in. She'd been surprised but relieved to hear Sophia had woken up again and now she could see her, still awake. It was clear she was still struggling, but Carol was right there with her, doing her best to reassure her, helping her through things. Henry was in the ward with them and Beth guessed Carol was introducing him to Sophia, telling her all about him.
"You made a terrible mistake, Ms. Greene." A voice suddenly said.
She turned and tensed, it was the doctor who had glared at her when she'd tried to help with Sophia when she first arrived, the same one who had been arguing with Denise earlier. Pete Anderson.
"I do not recall-"
"You interfered in something that wasn't your place to do so." He snapped. "You need to remember you are just an intern here. I am a doctor and I know what is best for the patients."
Beth shook her head. "Then you should know, what I said was-"
"Out of bonds. It was not your concern. Do not dare overstep again." He cut her off.
With that he turned and stalked away, leaving Beth shaken by his sudden attitude, especially considering how her help had actually resolved the matter and how it was clear he had been making things worse.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
