Chapter 10

Smiling lightly to herself as she left home, Enid made her way down the street, as usual clad in her skater-esque clothing.

'Thank God it's the weekend, finally get a break from school and some peace and quiet.' She thought. 'That is...whenever I get out of the house. I swear.'

She laughed a little, shaking her head. Her aunt from her mother's side had come over with her cousins for the weekend. She loved those two delightful bundles of energy but said energy usually didn't come with a volume control and could sometimes get on her nerves.

But she knew she'd be going out anyway. 'Already made the arrangements at the start of the week. I just hope mom isn't run ragged by those two ragamuffins while I'm gone.'

Still smiling she continued on her way, heading for the nearby cafe where she had arranged to meet up with her girlfriend. Just the thought made Enid smile, especially as this week had been busy for her girlfriend, they hadn't had much time to talk, especially with her working the night shift. But they had time now and it wouldn't be long before they saw each other once again.

'Just talking on the phone isn't enough for me.' She thought, her smile widening. 'I wanna be able to see her, to take her hand and-'

Her thoughts trailed off and her smile widened into a grin upon seeing her girlfriend waiting for her just outside the cafe, Beth Greene.

It was certainly a marked change from the Beth Greene seen during the week, where she'd usually be wearing scrubs. Now she was clad in a simple pair of jeans, slightly worn at the knees, an olive coloured tank-top and black cowboy boots. Seeing Enid Beth also grinned and Enid hurried over to join her.

"Hey babe." Beth greeted her with a playful drawl.

Enid rolled her eyes. "Hey yourself."

They briefly kissed and remained lost in each other's eyes. As they did so, Enid couldn't help but reflect on how they came together. Their first meeting had in fact only been a year ago, when Enid was new to the town. Beth had already been studying for her nursing degree and they had ended up meeting right in the very cafe they currently stood outside of. Beth had been in the cafe studying, while Enid had been approaching it, searching for a place that served the particular brand of breakfast cinnamon rolls she was fond of. It was pure luck that not only did the place sell those rolls, but that Beth happened to be there too.

Reflecting on that, Enid mused. 'Luck, or maybe it was fate.'

Their first meeting had been rather chaotic to say the least. It was a windy day, Enid had been hurrying and so had pretty much just opened the door in a rush. The resulting gust had sent Beth's papers flying. Naturally Beth had been upset by that and Enid, despite her usual snarky and sometimes distant demeanour, had instantly felt bad.

She had immediately leapt in to try and help salvage the mess she had made, apologising repeatedly. It wasn't until she finally handed the papers over to Beth and their eye met that she finally noticed just how pretty the blonde was. She instantly felt awkward even thinking that, considering they were practically strangers. She hadn't noticed at the time, but Beth had in fact been reflecting her very same expression back at her. From there things had simply taken off. Enid had bought a plate of cinnamon rolls, with extra, offering the extra to Beth as an apology. They soon got to talking and slowly but surely from there, things began to change until, six months ago, they finally confessed their feelings and had started their relationship.

'And here we are now, still going so strong.' She thought.

"Enid?" Beth queried, getting her attention. "You alright?"

Enid nodded quickly. "Yeah, yeah, just...remembering how we first met."

"Oh yes." Beth laughed. "So romantic. 'You blew over all my study notes'."

"Well, it worked for us, didn't it?" Enid replied coyly.

Beth gently squeezed Enid's hand at that. "I'd say it did."

They stood like that for a while, basking in each other's presence, enjoying the peace of the moment, before finally heading into the cafe together, looking forward to the first part of them having a peaceful weekend to themselves, especially after the drama of the week, what with Sophia's return.
