Chapter 19

Beth smiled lightly as she exited her apartment, locking up and dusting off her clothes. She didn't have far to go so she simply decided to walk.

'Things have been going so well, I can only hope that things will get truly better.' She reflected. 'Enid said Sophia is getting better every day, not only that, but she and Carl are now…'

She grinned at the recollection of Enid revealing Carl and Sophia's relationship; she was glad to hear that things were getting better for the poor girl now. Ever since seeing her first show up at the hospital in such a terrible state, she was glad that now Sophia was managing to go around her life mostly normally now. She still had some issues here and there and while sporadic now she was still experiencing nightmares.

Beth bit her lip. 'She's opened up to Carl and he was able to explain some of it to his dad, with Sophia's permission of course. But there still things that we don't know.'

But she knew they'd need to still give her time, she'd tell them when she was ready. In the meantime she had to focus on her current task which was to get to her sister's home to babysit her nephew.

Resuming her walk towards her sister's home, she was startled out of her thoughts by her shoulder bumping into someone else.

"Oh sorry."

The man grunted. "Careful there."

Beth bit her lip, the man was scruffy looking with shaggy medium length grey hair, a short grey beard and moustache and brown eyes that made her feel uneasy. Rolling those unsettling eyes, the man turned and stalked off and Beth narrowed her eyes.

'That's odd...Who is that, I've come to know almost everybody here in town, but I've never seen him before.' She wondered. 'Why did he make me feel like that too, it was like he was staring right through me.'

Shaking her head she tried to focus again and kept on moving to her sister's home. Yet despite everything the sight of that man and the way he looked at her kept making her feel uneasy. It wasn't until she reached the driveway at the end of the rather nice yet modest two story house that her sister lived in, that she realized what it was.

She grimaced. 'Urgh, that creep was actually undressing me with his eyes. Perv.'

Shaking her head, she made her way up the driveway and to the door. It disgusted her, but she wasn't surprised, he wasn't the first man to eye her up like that. Beth was just grateful for the self-defence classes, run by a friend of Rick's, Morgan Jones, she'd taken that left her move confident in her ability to deal with men like that if they tried more than just look.

Finally at the door Beth knocked and put on her best smile as the door opened to reveal an Asian man in his mid-twenties with medium length black hair and black eyes, dressed up for the night out.

"Ah Beth, hey." He greeted her warmly, stepping back to let her in.

She smiled as she entered. "Hi Glenn, hope I'm not too late."

Glenn Rhee, her brother-in-law shook his head.

"No it's fine, just in time actually, we've just finished getting ready." Glenn explained cheerfully.

Closing the door Glenn led the way through to the living room. Inside was Beth's sister, Maggie Rhee nee Greene, a woman slightly taller than Beth, close in age to her husband Glenn, with medium long brown hair, brown eyes and fair skinned, she too was dressed up and was happily playing with the two year old boy who giggled as she tickled him. Maggie and Glenn's son, Hershel, named after his maternal grandfather.

"Hey."

Beth's simple greeting brought a reaction from both of them.

"Auntie Beth!" Hershel burst out, giggling.

Maggie grinned. "Hey Beth, glad you made it."

Helping Hershel down Maggie approached her sister happily, while Hershel scampered towards her, hugging her legs tightly and joyfully. Beth grinned, this was partly why she adored babysitting her nephew, he was such an affectionate little boy.

A short while later, Beth smiled warmly as she set up some of Hershel's favourite toys, sitting on the floor opposite him. They had seen Maggie and Glenn off as they headed out for dinner and with Hershel already fed, Beth decided to spend time playing with her nephew and enjoying the time she spent here. Playing for a while, Hershel looked up from his playing to look at Beth for a moment.

Then he asked. "Beth, where Enid?"

Beth smiled, Hershel knew Enid of course, he had in fact been at her family home with Glenn and Maggie when she came out as well as introducing Enid to the family. Despite Enid's nervousness around Hershel, claiming that she never babysat as she wasn't good with kids, they actually got along well.

'She's better with kids than she admits. She has babysat Hershel along with me before and it went great. She was fine even when I had to step out.' Beth reflected as she answered Hershel. "She couldn't come today, buddy. She had a family thing to go to."

"Aww." Hershel sighed.

Beth smiled gently. "I'm sure though, the next chance, she'll be here, I'll even ask her myself."

Hershel's face lit up at that and he cheered and they continued to play. Beth just gladly enjoyed the way things were now finally improving at last.
