You had to be one hundred and two centimeters tall to ride Big Space Mountain.
"Mukai, here. Stand on your tiptoes." Said Mob as she stood her little sister next to the sign. Mukai had been too little for this ride last time they'd been at Disneyland but now she was older and taller and wiser…well Mob didn't know what wiser had to do with it but it must have had something to do with something…right?
Maybe if Mob had been wiser she would have known what to do about this.
"I'm tall enough! I grew! I'm a big girl now!" said Mukai as she pressed her back against the sign and stood on her tiptoes. She held her churro up high, too, so that people would know how tall she was. She wanted to ride the big ride with Sho and Shigeko. She didn't want to sit on the bench with Mama and Mine. The bench was boring and it was hot out and they had a couch they could sit on at their house!
She needed to ride the big ride…right now!
"It's only two centimeters, I don't think that anyone's going to notice." Said Sho. He reached over and tried to hold Mukai;s churro for her but she hit him with it…but that was ok. Everything she did was ok. Everything both of his sisters did was ok. After all it would have been so easy to have not had any sisters at all…it wasn't like they had to stay with him. He was amazed that they even wanted to stay with him. He was so…
He needed to stop smoking. It wasn't making him feel any better.
Or maybe he needed to smoke more. He pulled his pen, one of the ones he'd stolen from Big Sis, from his pocket and hid it in his sleeve. He hit it while Big Sis tried to figure out how to get Mukai to stand even more on her tiptoes than she already was. Maybe she thought Mukai could stand like a ballerina or something…but the park guys were bound to notice something like that. It wasn't fair, Mukai was totally tall enough for this ride! She just needed to grow two more centimeters really fast…but what was two centimeters, really? It wasn't like she was going to go flying out of the ride like in that movie he saw about the killer amusement park. Nobody died at Disneyland, or at least not his Baby Sis. If it came down to it he could just hold onto her with his powers…if he didn't fuck up like he fucked everything else in his life up…
He hit the pen again. Maybe it would make him feel better this time.
"But if they do then they'll kick her off and she'll be upset." Said Mob as she waved her hand. She did he best to make the smoke go away. Sho wasn't the best at smoking in public…though pens weren't smoking, they were vaping. Disneyland kicked you out for both, though, and the last thing that Mob wanted was to get kicked out of Disneyland. She didn't know where she would go if she wasn't allowed to go to Disneyland anymore.
Where else was there?
There was Universal Studios of course but they didn't have any Frozen stuff there. Mario World…that kind of looked fun…but she felt better at Disneyland. This was the closest thing she had to a happy place. She wasn't all the way happy…she didn't know if she would ever be all the way happy again. She should have been happy. She was at Disneyland with her little brother and sister and her best friend too. Her best friend who kept on saying that they weren't mad at her even though they should have been. Her best friend who kept on talking about breaking up with the love of their life because of her…because of what she did. Her best friend who had to live at Disneyland with her even though this wasn't their happy place at all because they loved her and…and she had messed up so bad and…and…
Tsuchiya was here too. That was good.
She was here, she was happy, and she would have been even happier if Mukai had finally been tall enough to ride this ride. She had been wanting to ride big kid rides for a while now and what kind of a big sister was Mob if she couldn't give Mukai what she wanted. That was what you did when you loved someone, you gave them whatever they wanted. You let them have giant churros even though they never finished them and you let them ride the big kid rides even though they were too short and you let them borrow your pens without asking and hit them right in the middle of Disneyland even though people were starting to look and if enough people looked you got kicked out.
Mob was trying her best to be a good big sister…she just had no idea if it was working or not.
"No! I'm going to ride, right now! Don't kick me off!" said Mukai as she tried to make herself even taller. The sign was mean. She was still in the red part, she could tell. She needed to get taller right now. Mama said that she was growing every day…but Mama was wrong! If she had been growing every day then she would have been as tall as Sho and Shigeko!
It wasn't fair.
"Mukai, no, don't get upset." Said Mob as she glanced behind her. If Mukai got upset then Tsuchiya was going to make her go back to the hotel and take a nap. It was way past her naptime but Mob didn't think that she needed one. She didn't like naps and she slept all night now, not like when she had been a baby. Also Tsuchiya was probably going to ask Mob and Sho to come with and then she was going to ask Mob to come back to the house and Minegishi…well they were going to agree with Tsuchiya that Mob needed to come back to the house. Also they were going to tell her that she needed to go to HQ and fill in for Dad even though she didn't need to.
Hatori was doing a great job…an ok job…he was doing his best and his best was good enough. Dad had put him in charge for a reason after all.
"I'm upset! I'm upset!" said Mukai as she threw her churro on the ground. She wanted to ride the big kid ride and this wasn't fair! She was a big girl now!
"I think that telling people not to get upset just makes them more upset." Said Sho as he bent down and picked up her churro. Now she was going to need another one…but this was one mostly ok. The chocolate inside was still good…not that he was going to eat it…but he was kind of hungry. If Shimazaki had been here then he would have eaten it. He would have snatched it right out of Sho's hand and taken a bite…or just leaned down and bitten the end of it off. It would have been funny…fun…things were always more fun when Shimazaki was around. Like now. This would have been way more fun if Shimazaki had been here. He could have teleported them to the front of the line or…no, wait, that would have been a bad idea. He could have just walked to the front if he'd worn sunglasses and brought one of his canes. People always practically ran out of the way when he did that…and Sho did hate waiting in lines…he liked getting to the front of the line and…and he did like eating churros….
Ten second rule.
"Sho!" said Mob as she snatched the churro out of his hand before he could even take one bite.
"That's mine!" shouted Mukai as she reached for her churro. No! That was hers! Nobody got to eat it but her and maybe Mama if she asked really nicely but mostly it was just for her!
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I thought that she was done with it." Said Sho
"It's mine! It's my churro!" said Mukai
"It's nobody's churro. Mukai, Sho, you can't eat food that's been on the ground. You'll get sick." Said Mob. She couldn't believe that she had to explain this to Sho…but then again he was a boy. Mukai was three and she didn't know about germs yet, that was why she did things like eat her own boogers and throw people's toothbrushes and stuff in the toilet, but Sho was twelve and a half. She had known about germs when she was twelve and a half and that meant that he knew about them too. They went to the same homeschool after all.
"Ten second rule." Said Sho
"This many." Said Mukai as she held up all of her fingers.
"There's no such thing." Said Mob as she tossed the churro into the garbage can behind her. Boys! What was the matter with them? Mob hoped that she had only girls. At least girls grew out of it. Not that she was having any kind of baby right now…but when she did she wanted a whole bunch of girls…and maybe one boy so Sho could have a friend.
Not now, though, not for…probably the rest of her life since she was never…she didn't want to think about that right now.
"Hey! That's my churro! Mine! For me!" shouted Mukai. Shigeko could be so mean sometimes!
"I know it was yours but it touched the ground. If you want another churro then I can get you won…even though you're probably not going to eat it. I mean we can get churros right now if you want to." Said Mob
"Not another! That one!" said Mukai
"I'm telling you, Big Sis, ten second rule. If it's on the ground for less then ten seconds then you won't get sick. Shimazaki said so and he never gets sick…fuck! Sorry, sorry!" said Sho. He shouldn't have said that…he wasn't thinking. He never thought and now he'd messed everything up all over again and Big Sis was probably going to cry or freak out or get upset or-or something like that! He was the worst little brother in the world…he always fucked up….he was such a fuck up and it was like he just…he didn't know what was wrong with himself!
He hit the pen again. He needed to feel better and it was bound to work eventually.
"Fuck!" shouted Mukai. That was what you were supposed to yell when you were mad. She didn't know why so many people were looking at her now. She was upset and when you had feelings then you had to show them. Mama had said so and Mama knew everything…most everything. She didn't know anything about big kid rides or Disneyland, that was why she was sitting on the bench talking to Mine…she wished that Mama had been here! Mama would have known just what to do!
"It's….it's ok." Said Mob as she made the smoke disappear again. She looked down at her shoes. She…she was fine. She didn't want to think about him so she wouldn't think about him. She wouldn't think about how she had ruined everything. She wouldn't think about how they all used to be good friends and now they weren't. She wouldn't think about how…how if she hadn't made Shimazaki fall in love with him and if she hadn't done all the things with him then they all could have been at Disneyland together….well not Serizawa since he hated crowds and not Hatori since he hated the outside world and not Dad because he hated everything that wasn't Hatori and ketchup omelets…things would have been different though. Better.
Closer to normal.
"Not it's not, I fucked up again and-" said Sho
"It's ok, Sho, you ok. We ok. We get new churros. We ride the ride. We go see Mickey again. We get big lollipops. We climb the castle. It's ok." Said Mukai as she took Sho's hand in hers and patted it. Sho could be kind of a crybaby sometimes. He got upset at everything even when he had no reason to be upset. Sometimes she felt like the big kid and he was the little kid…it wasn't fair that he was taller than her. She wasn't the crybaby, she should have been the taller person.
"See? Mukai's right, Sho, it's all going to be ok. We're going to get new churros and ride all the rides and see Mickey again, and Elsa, and Nick and Judy if they're out-" said Mob
"Rapunzel too!" said Mukai
"And Rapunzel too if she's out. Then we can get big lollipops too…but not climb the castle because they're going to kick us out if we do that. We can look at the castle, though, that's always fun." Said Mob as she took Sho's other hand in hers.
"…that's only fun for you guys. If you can't climb the castle then it's just a big decoration or…or whatever." Said Sho softly
"We can do things that are fun for you, too, Little Brother. Whatever you want." Said Mob. Sho took his hand from hers and wiped his eyes with it. He was better…better-ish. He would probably wind up being upset again later. He had been hitting her pen a lot and he always got kind of weird when he overdid it. He got all sad and scared. She didn't know why. She kind of wanted to take it from him…
But she wouldn't.
That wouldn't have been fair to him. How could she have punished him for something that she did all the time? Of course she only hit the pen when she was sure that nobody was looking…but she was older and she knew better. She was older and she knew better…she should have known better. She should have know better than to do a lot of the things that she did and…and she was…they were going to have a nice day. They weren't going to fight. They weren't going to get upset. They were all going to have a nice day here and then tomorrow would be nice and then the next day and the next day and the next day…until they went home…but she had no idea when that would be…
It didn't matter. She had to focus on today.
"I want to ride! I'm tall enough now!" shouted Mukai. She didn't care what Sho wanted. She wanted to ride this ride and even if she wasn't tall enough she was still going to ride because she wanted it! Right now!
"But you're too little. We can ride other things like, um, the teacups! Everyone loves the teacups." Said Mob
"No, not the teacups ride, this! Listen with your ears." Said Mukai
"It's only two centimeters, that's barely anything. That's like-like one centimeter! I mean it's not like she's going to go flying out and stuff if she's only two centimeters too short…and even if she did we could just catch her with our powers." Said Sho
"But then the normal people would notice." Said Mob
"What's more important? Normal people noticing or Mukai dying in a rollercoaster accident?" Said Sho rolling his eyes.
"No, no accident! We ok, Sho, we going to be ok. You ok." Said Mukai
"She's not going to die…um…she's too small to ride, that's all…but it's only two centimeters…but people might notice….um…hang on." Said Mob. She didn't want Mukai to die, nobody would have ever wanted that, but it wasn't safe and they could get kicked out…..but Mukai wanted to ride and Mob loved Mukai. When you loved someone then you got them whatever they wanted.
You always found a way.
She just needed to find a way to make Mukai taller than she was now…two centimeters all. Well more like three, maybe, but…but it was doable. Sho used to be the same way when he was too short to ride things. Not Disneyland stuff, they had never been too short for that, but when they went to places with real rollercoasters like that one place in China when they had been seven and eight. Sho had been a lot shorter than her back then, they were about the same height now, but sometimes he looked taller. It was mostly because of his hair.
Mob had an idea.
"No, no, leave my hair alone! Not a hair day today." Said Mukai as she tried to slap Shigkeko's hand away.
"Yeah, this isn't time to be doing hair." Said Sho. Girls! Honestly. She hoped that Big Sis and Shimazaki had a bunch of boys…it would have been weird either way but having a bunch of boys to do boy stuff with would have made the whole thing a lot less weird. Like having a bunch of little brothers but not actual little brothers. If he had actual little brothers then Dad would have liked them better and then….Sho didn't care what Dad liked or didn't like and…and he wasn't a what, he was a who, even if he didn't always feel like a who…well not the kind that lived on snowflakes and had Christmas stolen…
He hit then pen again. He needed to feel better.
"This isn't the time to be…never mind. Remember when we were little? And you were too short to ride things? I was just thinking that-" said Mob
"I was never too short to ride anything. Even when I was people just thought I was taller because of my…oh! Big Sis, you're a genius!" said Sho as he started to undo the rest of Mukai's braids. Big Sis always knew what to do. She was smarter than him too…she was better than him about this and…and everything else. He sucked at this and….and he sucked at everything and…and he didn't know what he was supposed to do about this. So he helped with Mukai's hair…
And he hit he pen again, too. He just needed to feel better.
"Thanks Sho, I love you." Said Mob as she let go of Mukai's hair and hugged Sho. He was such a good little brother…she just wished that she was a better big sister….but it was hard. This whole thing was just so hard sometimes….she wished that everything could have been as easy as helping Mukai get tall enough to ride a ride. She wished that she was little, that her problems were that easy, she wished…she wished that she was less selfish. She needed to stop thinking only about herself like that. She just…she needed to be nicer. She needed to be better. She needed…
She needed to get Mukai on this ride before she got upset again.
"I love you too!" said Mukai as she hugged Sho as hard as she could. She didn't want to have her hair done right now but she didn't want Sho to be sad anymore. He was always sad…maybe because he smelled bad today. Worse than normal. It was that pen thing…he needed all the love that he could get. He was so sad all the time. Even when his face didn't show it his colors did.
Poor Sho.
"I love you too Mukai, I love the both of you more than anything else in the world." Said Mob as she and Sho began to undo Mukai's braids. She didn't sit still for it, and she didn't like it, but in the end she was tall enough to ride. Nobody noticed how most of her height was in her hair. Nobody noticed that she was too short to ride, that she kept on saying that she was tall enough now, and that the bar didn't exactly come down over her the right way. Nobody noticed, either, that she kind of went flying out of the car. Nobody noticed, either, that she and Sho caught her.
Mukai was too small to ride but Mob and Sho loved her and they wouldn't let anything bad happen to her. Mob especially, since she was the big sister for the both of them and she had to take care of them both….and that meant giving them whatever they wanted.
