Chapter 23
"You sure you're ready for this Sophia, this is a big step?" Henry asked worriedly.
They were in the living room of their house, Sophia had dressed up for another date. This time it wouldn't just be her and Carl, they would be having a double date with Beth and Enid too. Carol had just entered the room at that point and bit her lip, looking over at Sophia who smiled.
"I'll be alright, really." She said. "This will be fun."
Henry nodded. "Well, okay."
Carol then added. "Just remember, if anything happens you just have to contact me."
"I know mom, thanks." Sophia replied.
It was then they heard the knock at the door and Sophia went to answer it, she smiled widely at Carl who returned the smile.
"Hey." He greeted her with warmth, eyes lighting up.
She grinned. "Hey yourself."
Laughing softly they embraced and kissed and Sophia looked over her shoulder.
"Okay, I'll see you when I get back."
Carol nodded. "Have fun dear."
Henry grinned and waved as they closed the door and headed off to where Beth's car was parked, waiting for them.
"C'mon lovebirds, don't keep us waiting." Enid teased through the window.
Carl laughed. "Oh, like you and Beth didn't keep me waiting when she went to pick you up?"
Beth just laughed too. "Just get in the car with your girl, Grimes."
Smirking at Sophia Carl opened the door and allowed her to climb in, following her in and closed the door. They were soon buckled up and Beth drove off.
It was a bit of a drive but they soon reached their destination, one that still surprised the occupants of the car, but the three teens especially.
"I still can't believe they actually still have a drive in movie theatre here...or anywhere." Carl remarked.
Beth just laughed softly. "There are apparently enough retro movie fans to keep this place in business."
"Seems that way." Sophia remarked as she looked around at the other cars already in place.
Beth soon parked in their assigned spot and went to get some food for them all. They had a good place, with an excellent view of the main screen.
"So?" Enid began suddenly. "How have you guys been holding up?"
Sophia smiled lightly. "Managing. Things a lot better now than they were."
Carl agreed. "Yeah, you managed to speak to dad too, we have people out looking. Soon those guys will be found and brought to justice."
"I certainly hope so." Sophia replied with a soft smile.
It was then Beth returned and soon they all had their snacks and were making small talk, waiting for the movie to start. As they waited Carl reflected on what Sophia had said, about things being a lot better. He knew she wasn't wrong, especially as she was starting to be the one to initiate some things between them, taking his hand, hugging or kissing him, often without hesitation.
'She may never again be the same as she was...but she's getting damn close.' He thought happily.
She even proved it at that exact moment when she leaned into him, head resting on his shoulder and he responded by putting his arm around her.
The movie then started and they settled back, watching and enjoying. Their peaceful happiness a testament to all the hard work and effort it took to get this far. But in the shadows of the nearby trees, two men stood, watching. Their eyes fixated on one car in particular, Beth's car. More exactly they were watching Carl and Sophia.
"That's her." One of them stated. "But damn if shit didn't end up getting more complicated."
The other shook his head. "Not really, the boy will have to be punished for ruining our work and for stealing from us, but we just take him with us and the girl can be fixed easily."
"Yeah except the police are on our asses now, she must've fucking talked." The first said again.
Rolling his eyes the second figure turned away. "You're making a lot of assumptions. But even if she did, it woulda been under duress, after all, she knows the rules."
"Rules or not, she's clearly not part of us anymore and that boy could have easily influenced her, changed her." The first one stated.
"Then all we have to do is reverse it, nice and easy to do of course, especially when we'll be sorting him out as well." The second stated, in a tone that suggested that was all that would be said on the matter.
With that he stalked away and left. After a moment of uncertainty, the first one also left still wondering how they were going to take back what was theirs with all the police around looking for them and knowing their faces. Meanwhile, unaware of the danger that was brewing, the two couples sat, enjoying the moving and basking in the peacefulness of the moment.
