Chapter 26

Carl sighed as he waited, hopeful that he was nearly done. After being checked over and having his burns treated, the wound to his neck too, he was now just waiting to get his new glass eye. Soon the doctor arrived, holding a small box.

"Here we are, Mr. Grimes." He said calmly. "Your new eye. How are you holding up?"

Gratefully taking the box, Carl sighed. "I'll be fine, once I get to see Sophia."

The doctor nodded. "Of course, well, that's all for us, you've recovered well physically. But you and Miss Peletier might need more help down the line."

"I understand, thank you." Carl replied.

With that he was permitted to leave and so left the office. Not wanting to cause a scene of any sort he ducked into the nearest bathroom and made sure to fit his eye in place. Once done he left and made his way down the corridor, heading for Sophia's room.

"Carl."

He turned and smiled. "Hey dad."

Rick shook his head. "You nearly get killed and that's all you have to say?"

Carl shrugged and then, both of them just laughed and hugged.

"I'm glad you're alright." Rick said quietly.

"Me too dad." Carl paused and then added. "Thanks to you, Shane and the rest of the police."

Rick stepped back, smirking. "Well, I'll never complain about you, or other teens, being practically glued to their phones after this. It's how we found you after all."

Carl smirked, he had an idea it was something like that, being tracked by their phones. He didn't mind, it worked, that was what mattered.

Rick looked at Carl carefully, inwardly grimacing at the still visible, but no longer lurid, mark on his neck, he otherwise seemed fully recovered and even managed to get his damaged glass eye replaced.

"Looks like you're in the clear."

"Physically yes." Carl admitted. "Right now however, I just wanna see Sophia."

Rick nodded. "Well, what are we waiting for."

Grinning Carl walked along with his father until they reached Sophia's room. Inside, Carol and Henry were there, fussing over Sophia, making sure she was alright.

Sophia smiled gently. "Really, I'm okay, compared to last time, this was nothing."

"Oh, honey, I wish you wouldn't-" Carol groaned, unable to believe her daughter was joking about this.

Henry looked up and spotted the Grimes family. "Oh, Carl, Mr. Grimes."

The others turned to them too, smiling.

Carol stood up. "Rick, I...thank you."

"It wasn't just me." Rick reminded her.

But to Carl and Sophia, all that mattered at this moment was each other. They locked gazes and were unable to look away, hope and joy filling them as it sunk in, they were both safe, they were together and their captors had been arrested and would certainly be going away for a very, very long time. Sensing the mood, Rick leaned in closer to Carol.

"Maybe we should give them some, alone time?" He whispered.

Carol smiled at that and nodded, gently ushering Henry out as Rick left with them. Now just the two of them Carl sat down and immediately took Sophia's hand, the two of them overjoyed and basking in each other's presence.

Smiling warmly, Sophia gently pulled Carl closer and kissed him softly.

"I'm so glad you're alright, I-"

Carl shook his head. "Don't start feeling guilty. We had to stay strong, we couldn't let anything get to us and you know I'd gladly risk everything for you."

"But if you'd died-"

Carl cut her off by kissing her again and then spoke. "But I didn't and I'm here, so…"

She laughed softly at that and they took a moment to enjoy their happiness. Then suddenly Rick burst in.

"Dad?"

Rick's eyes were wide and he seemed breathless as he revealed.

"Michonne just came in, she's gone into labour."
