Five Truths About Rabbitleap
i.
Fallowfern's favorite story was about the lucky rabbit. A creature so quick and agile that even death could never catch it.
Her firstborn son, a small brown kit, struggles to breathe. Fallowtail holds her breath as Echosong massages his chest. After a long moment, Echosong cries, "He's breathing! Lucky little kit!"
Lucky indeed. Her lucky little Rabbitkit.
ii.
It's a nice story, but Rabbitpaw despises it. What is luck, if not success without skill?
He dreams of leading SkyClan, someday. He will achieve his dream because he is skilled and hardworking, not because he is lucky.
iii.
Growing up, his greatest inspiration is his mentor, Sharpclaw; and his father, Waspwhisker.
iv.
A SkyClan apprentice who is afraid of heights.
Irony in its cruelest form.
v.
He thinks that corralling his littermates would be a great sign of leadership, if only they would cooperate with him.
Plumwillow could be his deputy one day if she would quit drooling over Sparrowpelt. Creekfeather would like to pull pranks on his Clanmates rather than provide for them. Nettlesplash is just… Nettlesplash.
They drive him crazy, but at the end of the day, he can't imagine his life without them.
(Bonus i.)
When Sharpclaw falls sick, the deputyship becomes tangible. He uses every minute of the day to prove to Leafstar that he deserves the position over Mintfur.
However. When Mintfur begins to look at him with soft green eyes, for the first time ever, his dream wavers.
(Bonus ii.)
In the end, the decision is his: the deputyship, or Mintfur?
He wishes he could have both. Unfortunately, Rabbitleap isn't that lucky.
I'm currently rewriting The Impossible Life of a SkyClan Warrior (AGAIN!) so I hoped this little one-shot would help inspire me! Rabbitleap can sometimes be a pain to write, so this was helpful.
Enjoy the cliff hanger ;)
