"Merci beaucoup." Chloe called as she left the building. She had retrieved the keys for her new apartment in Geneva's city centre, a ten-minute walk to her new hospital. She was thankful for the basic French she had learnt when she took it for her Highers, and had picked up certain phrases during her time, and a few hours a week spent on Duolingo had helped her. Majority of patients and staff she worked with spoke near-perfect English, but with her accent, it had proved difficult to communicate certain points, so she had stuck with French.
The brisk walk to her new home made her pale cheeks flush a shade of pink, and her mustard scarf made the cold breeze seem almost bearable. As she unlocked the door, the heat from her flat hit her, its underfloor heating warming her feet almost instantaneously. Two years ago, she'd have never thought it would be possible for her to move into her own flat, let alone in another country to her family: mainly her mum. But Ange doesn't need Chloe in the same way anymore: she has Josh, Isabella and Alistair, Dom of course and Chloe knows that none of that means that her mum doesn't love her, it's just she doesn't depend on her in the way that she used to. Come to think of it, Chloe doesn't quite depend on Ange in the same way: she's gained more independence, begun to manage her anxiety better, and gained a reputation as an outstanding Cardiothoracic surgeon.
The basically furnished flat was a blank canvas in Chloe's mind, the sunlight streaming in as she opened the door to the kitchen with the black and white tiling gleaming in the corner of her eye. She sat at the desk close to the window, opening her laptop and taking notes of everything she knew that she required from a trip to IKEA, memories of the trip that her and Ange had taken to the furniture warehouse after they moved to London.
"Chloe! I'm not buying you another huge bear, we're furnishing a new house, not a toy shop!" Ange called across the section of the shop.
"Oh, but mum, look at him, please please please!" Chloe begged, her heart was set on the giant bear. "He's like Mor'du, only calmer and softer, please?"
"Who?" Ange questioned, confused.
"Don't you know anything? He's the evil bear from Brave," Chloe stated, as though it was obvious to her mum.
"Oh, you mean Scottish Frozen?"
"Yes! Or to anyone else in the world, Brave."
"Fine, fine, you can get him, but just the one, no more," Ange tried to speak sternly to her adult daughter as they shopped for furniture for their new home in London. Chloe had just started her F1 year in London, and Ange had requested a transfer to the same hospital, and Ange thought that a morning's retail therapy would do them both good. When they finally reached the checkout, Ange had spent far more than she imagined, and Chloe had managed to slip plenty into the trolley without her mum noticing. But all in all, their trip had been successful, and their new house was going to look far less like a blank box, and more like a proper home.

Incoming call
Chloe's phone blared out her familiar ringtone from across the room and she scurried to her feet to grab it.
"Chloe?"
"Hello stranger!" the surprise at her brother's call was evident in her voice. "Are you not at work?"
"No I'm not working today, I've got a couple of weeks off, but that's not the point, I was ringing to ask how you are and what are you up to?"
"I'm ok, I've just got the keys to my apartment and I'm off to the shops in a bit to pick up some coffee and something for dinner, why do you ask?"
"Look, I might as well get straight to the point: I'm here! In Geneva, at the station and I have no clue where to go!" Dom admitted as if her was telling a secret.
"What?! You're here? Why didn't you say?" Chloe laughed in shock and disbelief at the fact that her brother had used his annual leave to visit her. "Right, ok, give me a minute, which station are you at?"
"Ummm, Genève-Champel, I think," he spoke in an attempt at a French accent.
"Dom. Please don't tell me that you studied French at school, that was the worst French accent I've ever heard," she laughed as she pulled on her cherry red Doc Marten boots.
"No, I dropped it thankfully, but still, don't be so mean, it was a good attempt," he giggled.
"Right, well we can debate that in a bit, I'll be about ten minutes," she hung up once Dom had confirmed that he was indeed at the station he had told her,
"Hi!" Chloe called as soon as she saw Dom and walked quickly towards him, throwing her arms around him as soon as she was close enough.
"Chlo! I've missed you so much, facetime just isn't the same," he spoke as he returned the gesture.
"It's freezing out her, come on, let's get back to mine. I'm afraid it's very basic, as I said, I only got the keys for it today, but it's got two beds, a sofa, a kitchen and a bathroom so it should suffice," she explained as they walked back, Chloe nipping into the shop that they passed to get dinner and some basic food essentials.
When they returned, the two immediately sat down on the sofa and spoke: Dom filling Chloe in on all the Holby gossip and Chloe explaining how her new department worked.
"So, what do you have planned tomorrow?" Dom asked his younger sister.
"Well…this place could do with a more homely feel to it, so I was planning on a trip to IKEA, but if you just want to do touristy things, I'm completely fine with that, it's up to you," she replied.
"Are you kidding? A trip to IKEA would literally be my dream! Did you see that interior design show on the BBC before you left? I could be your very own interior design expert; I'd love to come with you!" he exclaimed.
"That's settled then, just don't tell mum- she'll be on the phone to you all the time, making sure that you don't let me buy something like one of those huge bears," she laughed, glad that she had her brother by her side for her shopping trip.
