And everything will be alright
Regina had lost the count of how long they had been in the Enchanted Forest. Well, not really. She was perfectly aware of how many days she had been without her little prince. That amount of time had been hell for her. Saying goodbye to Henry forever, going back to a place that was the source of a lot of her nightmares, finding out she had a psychopath sister she didn't know anything about but hated her anyway. It was all too much too soon.
But if she was to be honest with herself, she could list at least a couple of things that weren't that bad. Her relationship with Snow White was somehow improving, or at least they weren't trying to capture/kill each other, and Roland, the littlest Merry Men, who had been able to capture her heart the first day they had been back.
She had saved Roland from a flying monkey, (later they found out it was one of her sister's beasts) and she had given him a toy. They bonded after that and became inseparable.
People, especially his Merry Men, thought that Robin was crazy for leaving his son with her, but he knew he was safe with her. He didn't know why, he just knew.
Robin, who was Roland's father and leader of the Merry Men, was another 'not too bad' aspect of the Enchanted Forest. Yes they detested each other and were always at each other's throat, neither of them losing the chance to say something about the other, from the smell to how they behaved. But only a blind person couldn't see the change from angry comments to flirterious ones.
They kept saying it wasn't true. Regina claimed there was no way she would like someone who smelled like forest, as she had told Snow multiple times and the same thing went with Robin. He told his men that there was no way he would like someone so snobby and that glared at people so critically from head to toe everyone.
But the truth was that you could always find them talking in the middle of the night in the library, in the garden or in the kitchen where Regina would bake any kind of thing, but then in the morning, she would always deny it was her. Granny knew better, even if she didn't push the queen.
Everything was going as well as it was possible with the menace of the Wicked Witch, until the day Roland requested that both of them give him a bath. It was on that occasion that Regina saw it: the lion tattoo. Her lost chance at true love.
Tink had said she hadn't ruined only her life but the one of the person she was destined to be with, so what had happened to Robin because of her? She kept it together until Roland was asleep, but as soon as the boy's eyes closed, she bolted out of the room. By the time Robin went after her, approximately ten seconds later, he could only see vanishing the purple smoke of Regina's magic.
Regina was able to avoid him for a while, only staying with Roland when his father wasn't around, and when Snow asked, she always said she was fine and that everything was fine. Everyone could see that the queen and the thief were both miserable, but no one had the courage to talk to them.
Then the Wicked Witch happened.
She first sent her monkeys to attack the people who were scouting, some for food, some for defence. Then she decided it would be a good idea to pay them a little visit in person. It took a lot of Regina's magic to make sure the protection shield didn't fall, but at the end of it all they could say they had survived another day.
By the time everything was over, the former evil queen was physically, emotionally and magically exhausted, she didn't even know how she was able to make it back to her room. The next day she didn't leave her room, there was no way she could face Snow White without yelling at her. She was still exhausted, angry, hungry since she hadn't eaten the day before, and facing a room full of people ready to sell her to the wicked witch was not a good idea.
She was ready to incinerate whoever was knocking at her door but she changed her mind when she saw who was on the other side.
She smiled at him, a shy smile, but her expression changed quickly when a ball of energy and curls collided into her and Roland smiled up at her. The almost shy smile she reserved for her thief was replaced with a warm, bright, genuine and soft smile, one that was reserved only to one person in that realm: her little knight.
The thief and the queen hadn't talked yet about what had happened the day they put Roland to bed together, and it wasn't for lack of trying. Robin had tried multiple times to talk to her, but she always found an excuse to get away from him.
This time Robin was determined to talk with her.
They spend the day together, eating and playing in her room. And it was there that Roland fell asleep. Once the boy was all tucked in in her big bed, Robin followed Regina on the balcony.
"I don't think jumping down to avoid me is a good idea." It was meant to be a joke but Regina just took a sharp breath as she straightened her back.
Her hands were still on the banister, holding it so tight her knuckles turned white. "Funny you said that."
Robin put his hand on the small of her back. "What do you mean by that?" Then he slid his hands to her shoulders in order to turn her around. Once where she wanted her, he looked directly into her eyes. "What is going on Regina? What happened? Why are you avoiding me?"
Regina took his hand and passed her fingers on his lion tattoo. She didn't look up as she spoke.
"Many years ago I was on this exact spot and I don't know what happened, but the banister gave up. I fell down but before I could hit the floor a fairy named Tinkerbell saved me."
Regina explained to Robin how the fairy told her she needed love, that everyone out there had a soulmate and that she could help her in finding hers.
"She brought me to a tavern and showed me my soulmate, but I never went in to meet him, I was too scared of the unknown. I never saw his face but I saw something else..." She stopped herself from talking and she began to stroke his tattoo.
The thief's eyes moved between her and his tattoo as a thought began to form into his mind. Robin put his finger under her chin to look into her eyes. "You saw my tattoo? I'm your soulmate?" It took her a moment but she nodded and a smile began to form on his lips.
"I get that you were scared all those years ago but why did you run this time? You know me now, the kind of person that I am."
The moment of the truth. "Because when we were in Neverland -Regina had talked about it during one night talk- Tink told me I hadn't only ruined my life by not going in, but my soulmate's life too. And to be real, who wants as a soulmate someone like me?"
Regina looked down again and Robin pulled her in his arms. "I assure you what was ruined in my life wasn't because of you."
"But…"
"No buts. Unless it was you who caused the illness that killed Marian, you didn't ruin my life and that little boy who is asleep on your bed is the living proof of that."
Robin pulled back so that he could look into her eyes. "And I want a soulmate like you. You're amazing, strong, you love with everything that you are, and not that I really like it but you are always ready to sacrifice yourself for the other. What 's not to like?"
He smirked and she smiled up at him. "And what about the evil queen part. You know what I did…"
"I know what you did and who you were but you are not that person anymore, you changed and for the better."
The moment of silence was broken by Robin. "Can you accept that I like you just for who you are and nothing else? That I know about your past but I don't care about it because nothing is just black or white?"
She bit her lip. "It might take a while."
"All the time you need." Robin leaned forward and kissed her. When they broke apart he took her hand and guided her to the bed beside Roland and they went to sleep with the little boy between them. Once in bed Robin took her hand squeezing it lightly and she squeezed it back, seeking comfort from the gesture.
But the peace and quiet that was created in her bedroom didn't last long. In fact, the very next day, Snow White and Prince Charming called a meeting. The object of the meeting was always the same: finding something to stop the Wicked Witch.
They went around the same thing for hours before Robin suggested they should look into Rumplestin's castle.
After a lot of arguing, they decided that the queen and the thief would be perfect for that job: her because she has magic and him because he had already broken into said castle.
In the days before their departure, people were betting on who would kill the other first because everybody knew the pair couldn't stand each other's presence. At least that was what Grumpy the dwarf said. For their part, Robin and Regina were pretty happy to keep up the pretense of hating each other, knowing that at least they would have some time for each other. Granted they would have preferred another occasion but they took what they could.
It took them a couple of days to find everything they might need during their expedition but they were finally ready to leave. After a teary goodbye with Roland with the promise of being careful and of coming back soon, they left towards the castle.
By travelling with horses, it would take them two days to arrive, so they parted as soon as they could. For the night they found shelter in a cave. It was more a rock surrounded by trees, but there was nothing else and they really needed to stop to eat and rest. Same for the horses.
Regina was trying to sleep but despite being near the fire as much as possible, she was freezing. She wasn't made to sleep outside.
"Here, this is better." Robin said, laying down behind Regina so he could hug her.
"What exactly are you doing?" She questioned him.
"Sharing this sort of a bed to conserve body heat. It's cold and you are freezing. This way we can kind of warm each other." He simply replied.
Regina snuggled more into him, showing her appreciation. "I knew you would be useful for something." And with that said she fell asleep.
Robin shook his head and kissed hers before falling asleep too.
They arrived at Rumple's castle when it was already dark. They found a shelter for the horses and a room for themselves. Robin lit the fire while Regina put together something to eat.
For the first time they slept together on a bed, it wasn't the most comfortable one but it was a bed, and both Robin and Regina could say they could get used to falling asleep into each other's arms.
The exact opposite of what Grumpy had said.
For the next two days they looked in every inch of that place but they didn't find a single thing that could help them.
The return trip wasn't like the outward journey. While they were travelling towards Rumple's castle, they had some hope with them to find something, but now they were again at the starting point.
They had to camp again in the forest and once more, they shared the makeshift bed to conserve body heat, and because they needed to be close to each other but that is another story.
They received a warm welcome back from the merry men while the uncharming couple didn't even ask them how they were, how was the journey or even welcome them back. They only asked if they had found something. When they told them they didn't , Snow White was almost on the verge of tears and her prince took her to their bedroom.
That night Robin and Regina shared a bed again but it wasn't because they needed to conserve body heat, but because a boy around 3 ft tall asked them. He claimed he had missed them so much that they needed to sleep together so that he wouldn't miss them anymore. Both Robin and Regina were happy to oblige Roland's request.
It took them a lot of time to find a way to defeat the witch and when they discovered they needed to recast the dark curse because they needed Emma's light magic they lost a bit more hope.
When they woke up in Storybrooke they didn't know what had happened. People immediately blamed Regina: in their mind since she had cast the original curse then she had also cast this one.
To her surprise, it was someone she had never met, but she had the feeling she was wrong, who defended her from the attacks. She had casted the first curse but there was no proof it was her again, he had said.
They had done it, they had broken the curse. It took them too much time and it cost the life of someone but they did it. Well Regina did it, by using light magic and sharing the kiss of true love with her little prince who finally remembered her.
"I told you you had changed." Robin whispered to her ear while they were cuddling up together in her bed.
"Mmm yes, yes you did. Thank you for that."
"Always, milady. I'm going to tell you that you have changed and how amazing you are every time you need it and even when you think you don't need it but you actually do." He said and he kissed her head.
"I knew you would be useful for something." She said remembering their time in the forest. Robin snorted and he pulled her more into his arms. They fell asleep like, cuddling up into each other's arms.
Thank you for reading. Constructive criticisms and thoughts are always welcomed.
