"Come on, Kawaki. Let's get this out of the way before it gets really cold." The Hokage said, beckoning him over. "You need something else to wear besides that torn up outfit from the battle two days ago, anyways."
That was true. His blue Kara jacket had a big rip at the bottom and two more at the right shoulder and his green shirt had a big hole through the middle on the front from Garo's blast.
"I'm going?" he asked.
"Yeah, of course." The Hokage replied. "You can pick out whatever you want. Why don't you grab your jacket? I'll meet you at the door."
"No, I'll be fine. Let's just go." He replied, his tone leaving no room for argument. It had the Kara symbol on its back just like Jigen and he wanted nothing to do with it. He could handle the cold just fine. Apparently, he was about to get new clothes anyways.
The Hokage went to the hall closet by the bathroom and grabbed his jacket. He went to the entryway and put his shoes on and just as the Hokage was walking over to do the same, Boruto appeared at the top of the steps.
"Hey, mom, dad!" Boruto called, walking down the stairs with this ninja gear on. "I'm going out to train with Konohamaru-sensei, Sarada and Mitsuki, okay! Oh, its you."
Boruto's face fell when he saw him, eyeing him suspiciously. "I still don't like you being here. This village is my home so you better not go on another rampage today!"
"You think I want to be here?!" he growled.
"Boruto, just give it a chance, okay? Stop picking fights." The Hokage interrupted.
"But dad! He hurt Sumire and made a huge mess in Ryutan!" Boruto exclaimed, pointing at him angrily.
"I've got everything under control, Boruto." The Hokage replied.
Mrs. Uzumaki came out of the kitchen holding Boruto's lunchbox, looking concerned. "I know you're just worried about all of us, Boruto. But your father knows what he's doing. He made the decision that was best for everyone."
"Not for us." Boruto growled. "It's never about us! Just about him and everyone else."
"Boruto!" Mrs. Uzumaki exclaimed, looking disappointed.
Boruto walked over to his mother and took his lunchbox from her. "I'm off, mom."
"Alright, see you later, Boruto." Mrs. Uzumaki replied. "I'll have dinner on the table when you get home."
Boruto stalked past his father, put his shoes on, and left.
The Hokage sighed, frustrated, and walked over to his wife. "I'll talk to him later, Hinata."
He gave his wife a quick kiss goodbye. "Bye, Hinata! See you later."
The Hokage showed him around the village on the way, pointing out various destinations with lots of unnecessary commentary in between being greeted by all the adoring city folk.
"That's Kaminari Burger! Boruto and his team eat there a lot." He said, pointing at an obnoxious red building.
"And that's Dango-ya. Hinata takes Himawari there sometimes as a reward." He continued a few buildings later.
"That's Senju Park. We went there once for a family picnic for the cherry blossom festival." He said, pointing out a large, walled off park and forest area. The wall dividing park from street took up most of the block.
"That's the Konoha Library, if you like to read. And that yellow building is the Yamazaki Konbini, they have good instant ramen, bento, and frozen dinners." He narrated for their trip down the next block.
Eventually, they arrived at the clothing store. "And here we are! This is the Izumo Clothing Store."
"Good morning, Lord Seventh!" exclaimed one of the clerks as the Hokage grabbed a cart for them. Lots of more people spoke up to greet the Hokage, giving him curious looks as he was led over to a particular corner of the store.
"You can pick out whatever you want, Kawaki. Money's not a problem." The Hokage said, gesturing around at all the clothing. "I just want you to have a good week's worth of clothing."
"I don't need your charity!" he said, bristling. "I don't need anything from anyone."
"It's not charity, Kawaki." The Hokage replied. "I'm going to protect you and take care of you for the time being, and that includes making sure you have enough clothes to wear."
They make imprisoning me here sound so noble and kind. The longer I stay here, the easier it will be for Jigen to find me.
Jigen's soulless black eyes and angry expression appeared before him, unbidden.
I can't go back there not when I've finally gotten out. I'm not some hollow body for him to possess someday!
"Tch. Shut up." He growled, turning around and stalking off to a random display of shirts.
Then again, if he's strong enough that he's kept them from taking Boruto back up until now, maybe he is worth using as a shield.
He picked out a few outfits, a black hooded sweatshirt, and new undergarments as well as other various essentials like toiletries. Just the basic essentials, according to the Hokage. Well, basic to people who had been brought up properly anyways. His father hadn't even sent him to school as a kid much less bought him a toothbrush. He wasn't sure how much of this applied to him, really, he wasn't even sure he could still be considered human with how much Amado had altered his body. He just went with it anyways.
It's not like I'm going to be here very long. He's wasting his money.
The physical act of buying things was completely different in Konoha. His home village didn't even have running water or electricity because it was almost completely isolated from the outside world. Back there, all he'd had to do to buy rice or liquor for his father was hand over some coins and that was it. Here, they had a counter and a computer all set up to track what you spent so the clerk can tell you the total and then you pay. His confusion didn't go unnoticed by the Hokage, he'd seen his glances. He was relieved he didn't just start explaining the simple aspects of modern society right there in front of everyone.
Author's Note:
Thank you so much for reading! Please review and let me know what you think! I'm trying, but I'm not sure I'm writing anyone in character. Also it might be worth rereading chapters 1 & 2 because I updated them. This story actually might have a small plot now instead of being written on a whim, so I wanted to expand on Kawaki's first 24 hours a bit.
