Truth in Fiction
You dreamed of a fairytale romance, once upon a time, of being the dashing prince who would save the princess and carry her off into the sunset. But life didn't work that way, and anyway, there were no princesses in Osaka. You ended up moving to Tokyo, anyway, and by then, sweet romance dramas had replaced the childhood tales.
You met him halfway through your first year at Hyoutei Gakuen, and he amused you, this bundle of snark and spitfire and pride. Soon after the two of you are called to try out to be a doubles pair - you'll never admit you had pulled strings to arrange that. It had been to bait him, at first, and in the beginning the two of you had clashed on the courts. You never minded losing, but he did, and he'd spat out a curse at you and told you to come on already.
So you did, and you admit you were a little surprised when the two of you worked well together. He'd come up to you after the match, given you a measuring glance before telling you, "Kankoku wants us to practice doubles."
The two of you had talked more from then, and argued a lot, too - but that was the proof of your friendship. You hurt each other a lot, as well, because he knew where to jab, where it was most painful, and you did too. The weaknesses and insecurities, I don't have to play doubles, but you...
But in the end, he still let you catch him, and that was what mattered. He wasn't a princess, not really, and there was no enchanted world, but it was good enough, and better besides.
