A/N – Hello, everyone. I know. I'm slow. I'm sorry. I have to admit that I often times struggle with this story and it can be difficult for me to write. I'm not exactly sure why, but it is. I enjoy it and I love the characters, but it is hard. With that being said, I'm going to be bringing this one to a close soon. Within the next chapter or two. I've got a lot more I'd like to write. I've got a few chapters of another story already written and ready to go. I'm trying to start on the sequel to Changed for the Better and I want to write one shots. I put all of those aside though because I feel bad if I am working on them and not this story since it already takes me so long to get anything out. Real life and writer's block and guilt have made it slow going sometimes. I really love this story, but I'm nearing the end of what I want to do with it. I hope you all understand. And I hope you'll stick with me in the new story I'm working on and the sequel. And one shots. I really love writing the one shots. I'm sorry my pace is slow, but I really am doing the best I can.

With all of that being said, I hope you guys enjoy this chapter. Thank you all so much for your reviews and messages. It means so much to me. Feedback is so helpful when I'm sitting down to write. There's still some story to be told here and I'm looking forward to writing it.

And speaking of real life… I recently got engaged! I am really excited and so in love.

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates! Happy holidays to all and I hope everyone has a joyous New Year.

Rachel looked at the three bags that were on her bed and the piles of clothes around them. She was still packing for the trip she was taking with her mother to Indiana. They were only going to be there a week so she had to make sure she had everything she needed. One look at the clothes and she reasoned that this could be overkill, but who was to say she wouldn't need all of this stuff?

Shelby had surprised Rachel with a trip to London at the beginning of the summer, but Rachel had whined a few times about how she hadn't brought everything she needed because she didn't know where they were going. She wasn't going to make that mistake again even if this trip was just to Indiana and no to another country.

"Rachel," Shelby called from down the hall as she made her way towards the girl's room. "Dinner is almost- What are you doing?"

Shelby stood in the doorway and stared at the bags that had once been backed. There was stuff everywhere.

"I'm just going back through my bags to make sure I have everything I need," Rachel answered.

Shelby resisted the urge to roll her eyes and decided to let it go. She had argued with Rachel earlier about all of the stuff she wanted to bring, but had decided just to drop it. The battle wasn't worth fighting. She knew Rachel didn't need all of that, but it's not like they were flying. One bag would probably sit unopened in the car the entire time they were in Indiana. If Rachel wanted to have to unpack it when she got home, that was her decision.

"Just make sure it's all packed again before you go to bed tonight," Shelby instructed. "If you don't have what you want packed in the morning, it's not going."

Shelby was determined to get on the road early and she was not going to wait around for Rachel to pack up her entire room. She had been looking forward to this trip all summer. Travelling to London had been an amazing time and Shelby had also enjoyed all the free time she'd had to spend with Rachel. She and Hiram and LeRoy had come to easy solutions and agreements about how long Rachel would spend at each house. And it wasn't uncommon for Shelby to be seen in Lima anymore and the men spent their fair share of time with mother and daughter in New York. But this trip was just for Shelby and Rachel.

Shelby bought a car in New York last month and had been excited about the drive out to Lima. It had been a long time since she hadn't flown anywhere and she longed for the freedom of her youth when she'd throw some clothes in her car and drive for hours. She'd done that a lot to get away from her parents for hours a time. She and Elizabeth drove up from their small town near Fort Wayne, Indiana to Toronto, Canada on a Saturday once and spent the day shopping. They called Marie later in the evening to boast about being in Canada. Marie kindly reminded them they were only sixteen and had a curfew that they wouldn't meet because of the drive home. She wasn't mad though when the girls came in at three in the morning bearing gifts and apologetic kisses on her cheek. She knew Shelby had had a rough week and needed to get away. She let them sleep until noon the next day and then swatted two bottoms into action doing chores around the house. She'd always considered it to be a light punishment for leaving the country without permission, but Shelby had been berated by her mother enough that week and Marie knew she'd needed the break or she might explode.

Half way through her drive from New York to Lima, Shelby realized that driving for long distances was not as much fun as it was when she was younger. In fact, it was exhausting. At least the drive from Lima to Indiana would not be this long. And she would have Rachel's company so it would not be so bad.

"I know, Mom," Rachel answered with teenage disdain when Shelby told her it all had to be packed that night. How many times did they think she needed to be told?

"Come on, sweetheart," Shelby decided to back off so Rachel's attitude would stay in check. "Let's go eat."

Rachel took Shelby's outstretched hand and let her mom lead her from the room. A break would be nice right now anyway.

Rachel did indeed having everything packed and ready to go by the following morning and Hiram groaned good-naturedly as he loaded all of her stuff into Shelby's car.

"Rachel, you're not going to the moon and back, you know," Hiram said.

"I know," Rachel said. "I don't pack light."

"Are you sure you have everything?" Shelby asked one last time after Rachel hugged her fathers goodbye.

"I'm sure," Rachel answered. "I checked twice."

"Alright, then let's get going," Shelby said.

It was 10:00 in the morning and already later than Shelby had wanted to leave. LeRoy and Hiram were given another round of hugs and Shelby and Rachel were on their way.

"How long does it take to get there?" Rachel asked once they were on the interstate.

"About three hours," Shelby answered.

"Oh, that's not too bad then," Rachel said.

"Nope, not at all," Shelby replied.

"Can I drive part of the way?" Rachel asked.

"Nope, not at all," Shelby spoke in the same manner she just had.

"Mom," Rachel rolled her eyes and sat back.

Shelby just smiled and looked over at her teenager. Poor kid had it so rough.

Rachel reached for Shelby's iPod and searched for a new song than what was currently playing. It took her a couple minutes, but she finally made her selection and switched from the music her mother had selected when they left the house. She then put her head back and stared out the window as they drove past miles of nothing.

The music was the only noise in the car for a good half an hour and Rachel found herself drifting off. It wasn't until a phone chimed to indicate a text message did she perk back up.

"Was that yours or mine?" Rachel asked.

"Mine," Shelby answered. Her phone was in one of the cup holders and she'd seen it light up.

Rachel reached for her purse so she could pull out her phone and see if she had any alerts of her own and was surprised when she couldn't find it. She knew she had put it in there. Or at least she thought so. Rachel dug into her purse again and then started taking things out. Nope, it wasn't there. At all. Maybe it was in one of the other bags. Rachel sat back and shut her eyes and tried to remember where she'd left her phone. She groaned internally when she finally realized where it was.

"Mom," Rachel said hesitantly.

"What's up?" Shelby said with a quick glance at her daughter.

"Hypothetically speaking, how problematic would it be if one of us forgot something and we had to go back?" Rachel asked.

Shelby let out a long breath and gave her daughter and quick, but hard stare. "What did you forget?"

"My phone," Rachel answered.

Shelby shook her head. It couldn't have been something simple like socks, could it?

"Do you need it?" Shelby asked.

"Yes! Mom, I can't go a whole week without my phone," Rachel said.

"You manage while you're grounded," Shelby pointed out.

"But, Mom!" Rachel whined. "That's not fair. I'm not grounded now. I need it. What if I want to take pictures or text Kurt or call my dads?"

Shelby let out a defeated sigh and changed lanes so she could take the next exit and turn back.

"I'm sorry," Rachel said with a small voice and big eyes and Shelby knew enough to know the kid was buttering her up.

"It's fine," Shelby said.

An hour later, Shelby pulled back into the driveway at the Berry household and turned off the car.

"We're only staying five minutes," Shelby reminded Rachel.

"I know, I know," Rachel as she got out of the car. Her parents really must think she's deaf as many times as they felt the need to repeat themselves.

"What are you two doing back?" LeRoy asked when mother and daughter walked in the house.

"One of us forgot our phone," Shelby answered and then looked at Rachel.

"I'll be right back," Rachel said as she hurried up the stairs.

"You came all the way back for her phone?" Hiram asked.

"I weighed whether or not I wanted to drive a couple extra hours or whether I wanted to listen to her whine all week about not having a phone," Shelby said. "I didn't want her walking in the door at Marie's already pissed off and with an attitude."

"That's true," Hiram said. "You chose the path of less drama."

"Yes," Shelby confirmed. "I don't know where she gets it from."

"It wasn't us," LeRoy said as Shelby walked by him.

"Sure it wasn't," Shelby said with a wink and then disappeared into the bathroom. She may as well make a pit stop while they were there.

Rachel came down the stairs a couple minutes later and announced that she was ready to go.

"Where's your phone?" Hiram asked.

"Uhh… hang on," Rachel said and then darted back up the stairs.

Shelby shook her head and moved towards the front door to wait outside while Hiram and LeRoy just laughed.

Rachel returned a few seconds later with her phone in hand and a sheepish grin on her face.

"Ok, I'm really ready now," Rachel said.

"Be good," LeRoy instructed as he gave her another hug.

"Don't leave your head in Indiana," Hiram added.

"Dads," Rachel said with annoyance before telling them she loved them and joining her mother in the car.

"Got everything now?" Shelby asked once Rachel got in the front seat.

"Yes," Rachel answered.

"Are you sure?" Shelby asked.

"Yes, Mom."

"Because we're not turning around again," Shelby warned her.

"We won't need to," Rachel assured her.

"Good. Then let's get back on our way."

They hadn't even been on the road ten minutes when Rachel turned to Shelby and cleared her throat ever so lightly.

"Mama?"

"Yes, my love?"

"I have to go to the bathroom."

Shelby cast a disbelieving look over Rachel's earnest face and her eyes narrowed at the girl.

"We just got back on the interstate," Shelby informed her of the obvious.

"I know, but-"

"What were you doing up in your room all that time?" Shelby asked.

"Making sure I hadn't forgotten anything else," Rachel answered.

"You're just going to have to wait for a little while," Shelby told her.

"Mommy," Rachel whined and started to shake her leg.

"Rachel," Shelby let out a defeated sigh and once again got over so she could take the next exit.

Rachel waited until they were close and then decided to speak up.

"I'm just kidding," Rachel said.

"What?" Shelby asked.

"I'm joking. I don't need you to stop," Rachel said and gave her mother a cheeky smile. "I went to the bathroom while I was upstairs."

"Rachel," Shelby growled as she checked her mirrors and got out of the exit lane and continued on the interstate.

"I love you, Mommy," Rachel leaned over and gently put her head on Shelby's shoulder as the woman drove.

"Don't make me have to pull this car over, young lady," Shelby warned with a laugh. "I will do it."

"And make us even later?" Rachel asked. "That doesn't seem like a good plan."

"For you, my darling, I'd make an exception," Shelby said. "Sit back now and find us some good music."

Rachel was glad when they finally pulled into a neighborhood and her mother informed her they were close. She didn't mind the drive, but she was ready to be there now. Rachel was excited to get to see Marie and Elizabeth again, as well as meeting the rest of the family.

Another thing that had been on Rachel's mind was her grandparents. She knew they lived in the same town as Marie and she wondered if they were going to see them, but Shelby never even brought her parents up. Rachel was torn because part of her wanted to see her grandmother again now that she was more prepared for it. And she had to admit that she was really curious about Shelby's father and what he was like. She could never bring herself to ask her mom though because it didn't seem fair. But she couldn't help the curiosity she felt about wanting to see where her mother grew up.

"There it is," Shelby pointed out as Marie's house. "The one down on the corner."

"It's pretty," Rachel said.

"Yep. It always has been," Shelby told her. "Mimi keeps a neat house. She was appalled when she came to New York and saw my first apartment. By the time she was done with it, it was cleaner than the day I moved in."

"She cleaned your apartment?" Rachel asked. "That's nice."

"I helped," Shelby said. "I didn't have much of a choice."

Shelby pulled the car into the driveway and smiled when Marie came out onto the porch to greet them.

"Hi, Mimi!" Shelby said enthusiastically as she walked towards the woman to give her a hug.

"Hi," Marie said.

Rachel stayed by the car and started to get the bags out. She had her purse and then lifted her three bags out of the trunk and then reached for Shelby's suitcase. All she had to do was get it on the ground and she could pull it along.

"Rachel, don't drop everything," Shelby said. "You don't have to carry it all at once. You can make more than one trip, you know."

"I don't want to have to make more than one trip," Rachel said. "I got it."

Shelby got to Rachel before she could dump all of their clothes all over the sidewalk. She took a couple of the bags and secured her own suitcase.

"Hi, Mimi," Rachel greeted when she got to the woman and wasn't surprised to find herself in a hug. She returned it as best she could with the bags in her arms.

"You two come inside," Marie instructed. "I'll make you a late lunch."

"Where is everyone else?" Rachel asked once they were inside and the bags had been left in the living room. "I thought Elizabeth and her family would be here."

"They were here earlier," Marie answered, "but it was getting too late and they had to leave. The kids had soccer practice. We'll see them later at dinner."

"Oh," Rachel said and looked away from her mom and gazed around the room innocently.

Shelby just fixed her daughter with a state and shook her head. The kid wasn't fooling anyone.

"Come on," Marie said, "I'll show you up to the guest rooms. I've got you in your mom's old room."

"You had your own room here?" Rachel asked Shelby.

"After a while it was just easier," Shelby said with a shrug. She'd only been nine or so when Marie finally decided that she'd just call the guest room what it really was; Shelby's room. When guests came to stay, the girls would share, but otherwise, Shelby had her own space at Marie's house.

"Do you have any pictures I can look at?" Rachel asked excitedly.

"You bet I do," Marie said with a wide smile. "I've got them all out and ready to show you."

"Mimi…" Shelby whined.

"Hush, you," Mimi chastised. "Leave me and my new granddaughter alone."

Both Rachel and Shelby beamed with pride at Marie's statement. Marie took Rachel by the hand and led her to the stairs and up. Shelby let them go because she needed a minute and she wanted the two of them to bond. She'd get their bags and join them in a few minutes.

It didn't take very long for Rachel and Marie to become thick as thieves. Rachel delighted in hearing all of the stories Mimi was telling about Shelby, while Shelby pretended to be annoyed by it. In fact, she too loved getting to share this part of her history with Rachel.

A few hours later Marie and Rachel were sitting on the couch together while Shelby opted for the nearby recliner. Rachel had a photo album open on her lap and Marie was relaying stories.

"Is this the night Mom and Elizabeth snuck off and went to that New Kids on the Block concert?" Rachel asked with a scrunched up nose. She still couldn't believe her mother's poor taste in music.

"Yes it is," Marie said. "I had no idea that's what they were planning when I took this picture."

Marie and Rachel looked over at Shelby and shook their heads in unison. Shelby shrugged her shoulders and ignored their disapproving glares.

"I'm just glad that my daughter knows better than to ever to do that," Shelby said.

"I wouldn't do it for some terrible music like that," Rachel said. Barbra? Absolutely.

The opening of the front door interrupted Shelby's response and two nine year olds came hurrying into the house.

"Aunt Shelby!" the little girl, Rose, yelled and practically jumped on the woman.

Rose's twin brother Liam was no to be outdone and he too found a spot on Shelby's lap. The kids hugged her tightly and Shelby held them both. Rachel watched the scene curiously and closed the photo album when Elizabeth and her husband Gavin also made their way into the room. Marie put an arm around Rachel as if to reassure her of her place there.

"Hi, Rachel," Elizabeth greeted. Rachel stood up when she came over and easily accepted the hug. "This is my husband Gavin."

"It's lovely to meet you," Gavin said. "Elizabeth and Marie have told me a lot about you."

"It's nice to meet you too," Rachel said.

"Guys," Shelby said to the two kids on her lap. "This is Rachel, my daughter. Rachel this is Liam and Rose."

"Hi," Rachel said shyly. Adults she could handle, but other kids had always made her nervous, even if they were younger than her.

"Hi," Liam and Rose said at the same time.

There was an awkward silence that followed and Marie finally declared that it was time for dinner. Hopefully that would put all of the kids at ease and they'd start to open up more.

Dinner had done the trick and the kids chatted a bit more easily and Shelby couldn't have asked for a better evening. Rachel appeared to be comfortable and she was happy about the way her daughter seemed to have been so easily integrated into the family; so much so that the kids were given the chore of clearing the table and doing the dishes after dinner. All three kids complained, but it didn't get them out of the work.

Rachel left the twins in the kitchen once more and returned to the table for the last few dishes that remained. It really wasn't that bad. All they had to do was rinse everything off and put everything in the dishwasher, but Rachel hated this chore at home and couldn't believe she had to do it here too.

The twins were both standing on stools at the sink and rinsing off everything before putting it in the dishwasher.

"Some of these are going to have to soak, I think," Rachel said.

"Probably," Rose added.

"I'll do the water!" Liam told them.

Rachel glanced over at him and saw the unmistakable look of a little boy about to get into mischief.

"Watch this, Rachel," Liam said.

He turned the water full blast in the sink and then held a bottle of dish soap over it. Rachel watched he emptied half, if not more, of the bottle into the sink. It didn't take very long for the suds to start to rise above the sink.

"Um, you should probably turn the water off now," Rachel said.

"Nah, it can get bigger," Liam countered.

And bigger it got. Liam palmed his hands and picked up a pile of suds and blew them across the room. Rose followed suit, but instead she blew her soap right at her brother.

"Oh yeah!" Liam said, "Take that." He picked up as much as he could get and threw it at Rose and was happy with the results when a large clump stuck on her head.

Rachel laughed and stepped forward to join the kids. It was just soap.

"Watch this," Rachel said to Rose. She picked up some soap and started to spread it on Liam's face. She created a beard on his chin and put a clump on his nose and eyebrows.

"You look like a crazy Santa Claus," Rose laughed at her brother and high-fived Rachel, helping to splatter even more soap suds everywhere.

Liam retaliated by picking up another large handful and putting it on Rachel's head. He even made sure some of it went down and got on her ears. Somewhere in the back of her mind, Rachel registered that the suds were spilling over the sink and towards the floor. But it was just some soap suds; it's not like it would be hard to clean up. And besides, she was having fun. Her mom and Marie had told her to relax and she would fit in here. Even if they saw the mess, they'd surely be happy that she was doing as told and it was working.

The kids' laughter continued to grow as they painted each other with soap suds and attempted to throw them at each other. Rachel did eventually reach other and turn the water in the sink off and the twins then stuck their arms all the way into the suds when they saw Rachel's come back completely covered.

The adults sat talking in the other room and listened as the laughter from the kitchen intensified.

"What do you think is going on in there?" Gavin asked. "I've never had such a good time doing the dishes."

"I'm just glad they seem to be getting along," Shelby said. "I was so worried it would be awkward for all of them."

Another peal of laughter rang out and Elizabeth stood up. "I'm going to go and check on them."

"I'll go with you," Shelby said.

The mothers were eager to see what was making their children so happy. They did not, however, expect to see the scene before them and they both stopped at the doorway and watched their soap covered children. The kids hadn't noticed them yet and so the game continued.

Both mothers could not contain their smiles as they watched the kids. Shelby couldn't help but be happy because she rarely ever got to see Rachel let loose and forget she was a teenager for a while. But they both knew they would need to stop it soon so the mess didn't get any bigger. Mimi would find them soon.

"Guys-" Elizabeth started, but was cut off.

"What is going on in here?" Marie said as she stepped between Shelby and Elizabeth and entered her kitchen.

Gavin took one look in and turned around and went back to the living room. He was not going to get in the middle of this.

The kids all froze and looked over at the three woman who were also in the kitchen. When did they get there? Three innocent faces looked at their mothers and grandmother and the kids tried to appear nonchalant, like they didn't know what Marie was talking about. The soap dripping off their faces and down the counters did not help their cause.

"We're almost done with the dishes, Mimi," Liam said. He was so angelic.

"The dishwasher is loaded," Rose added. "Everything else needs to soak. "

Rachel didn't say anything and instead looked over at her mother for help. Shelby just kept her features neutral and nodded towards Marie to indicate Rachel needed to listen to her.

"They didn't need to soak on the floor, did they?" Marie asked. "You three have got a mess to clean up."

Marie opened a drawer and grabbed out a clean dishtowel and methodically wiped the soap from the kids. Rachel stood still while Mimi cleaned her off and she could have sworn she saw her mother smiling across the room.

"Rachel, I want you to get the mop from the closet over there," Marie instructed.

She pointed Rachel in the right direction and sent her off with a smart swat to her backside. Rachel's mouth dropped open in shock and she rubbed the spot as she walked towards Shelby. She looked at her mom and Shelby just shrugged and gave her a look to let her know she deserved that. While she was getting the mop, Rachel heard two more swats being delivered and she was glad that she wasn't the only one.

It didn't take very long and under the supervision of their Mimi, the kitchen was clean in no time. Mimi shooed the troublemakers from her kitchen and the kids were happy to comply. They shared a grin as they returned to the living and sat down.

The night ended a little while later when Elizabeth and Gavin left with the kids. It was nearing midnight when Shelby, Rachel, and Marie decided to go up to bed. Shelby sat down on the bed while she was tucking Rachel in and moved some hair away from the girl's face.

"I had fun today, Mom," Rachel said. "I like being here."

"I'm so glad," Shelby said. "I really want you to get to know Mimi and Elizabeth and Gavin and the kids. They're my family."

"I love them," Rachel said through a yawn. "Even if the twins did get me in trouble."

"It didn't look like they forced you to play, young lady," Shelby said with a smirk.

"They're good kids," Rachel said and Shelby shook her head. Rachel was talking like she wasn't one of the kids herself.

"Yes, they are. All three of them," Shelby said. "Ok, time to get some sleep. I love you."

"I love you too, Mom," Rachel said.

Shelby leaned down and kissed Rachel's head and then made sure she was covered and tucked in like Rachel liked. She flicked the light off on the way out and headed to the other guest room to get some sleep herself.

The following morning after breakfast, Rachel was sent to the basement with a full bag of recycling that wouldn't be collected until the end of the week. Marie instructed her to leave the bag in the bin in the corner and Rachel found it easily enough. She was about to put the bag in it when she noticed brand new copies of the white and yellow pages in the bottom of the blue recycling bin. Rachel was shocked they still printed those things and it was clear Marie wasn't going to use hers. They'd been left to be recycled at the end of the week.

Curiosity got the best of Rachel and she set the bag aside and reached in and picked up the white pages. She just wanted to see if her grandparents were listed. That might prove to be difficult because she didn't even know Shelby's father's name, but she would look. How many Corcoran's could there be in town anyway.

As it turned out, there was just one listing for Corcoran and Rachel glanced down at the address and phone number like if she stared at it long enough, it would give her the answer of what to do next.

"Rachel?" Shelby called from the top of the basement stairs. "Are you okay down there?"

"Yeah," Rachel yelled back. "I'll be right up."

Rachel quickly pulled out her phone and wrote a note with the address and phone number listed. She bet it was probably close by considering Shelby and Elizabeth had gone to the same schools. Maybe she could walk by the house or something later in the week. Just to see it.

When she had all of the information provided, Rachel dropped the book back into the bin and put the other bag on top and hurried up the stairs.

Later in the week turned out to be the very next day. Elizabeth and Shelby planned to go shopping for a few hours and Rachel decided to stay home and Marie was happy to have the company.

"Mimi, can I take a walk?" Rachel asked once her mother was gone.

"Where do you want to go?" Marie asked.

"I don't know," Rachel fibbed. "I just want to get to see where my mom grew up."

"If you give me an hour I'll be finished in here and I can go with you," Marie offered. She had taken the opportunity to finish up some work she'd brought home since she'd taken the week off for Shelby and Rachel's visit.

"Can I go now and come back and get you in an hour?" Rachel asked. "I won't go far."

"Sure," Marie said. "There's a bike in the garage if you'd rather ride."

"Thanks!"

"You've got your phone, right?" Marie asked. "And you've got my number in it?"

"Yes ma'am," Rachel said.

"Ok, go on," Marie said. "Be careful and don't go too far. I don't want you getting lost out there."

"I'll be fine," Rachel said.

Rachel went to the garage and found the purple cruiser bicycle and easily hopped on it. This would be great because it would save time walking. Rachel rode a few blocks down and turned the corner so she was out of sight from Marie's house and stopped. She pulled out her phone and entered in the address she'd gotten from the white pages and pulled up the directions on how to get there. As she suspected, it wasn't that far and Rachel took off once again.

Fifteen minutes later she was standing in front of an unassuming pale blue two story house. She stood there for a few minutes thinking about her mom living there and how her childhood was. She had just planned to go by and see it, but now that she was here she couldn't shake off wanting to ring the doorbell. Was her grandmother in there? Rachel had a few more things she'd like to say to the woman that she wasn't able to say that night in New York. But it was the curiosity about her grandfather that really propelled her forward to the front door. She just needed to meet him once for her own sake and if she could do it now and not bother her mom, it would be even better.

Rachel took a deep breath and stood up straight and tall in case it was her grandmother who came to the door. She would always hold her head high in front of that woman. After a few moments she reached a confident hand out and rang the doorbell.

It didn't take long for Rachel to hear movement within the house and she steeled herself when the door opened. It wasn't Evelyn Corcoran who opened the door, but rather an older gentleman with salt and pepper hair and kind eyes; they were her mother's eyes. He was average height and looked at Rachel not in disgust, but curiosity.

"Can I help you?"

Rachel just continued to stare at him while she tried to figure out what to do next. She hadn't really planned on what she'd actually say to the man. Maybe she should just go. But her feet were glued down and her mouth had other ideas.

"Are you my grandfather?"
