Fran betas. Jill, Ariel, and Pearly keep me going. just like we're gonna keep this 'date' going... ;)
"Eyes locked on the cygnet," Angela whispers. Her hand is resting on the crook of my arm, and we look every bit the happy couple.
Cygnet. It's not only the term for a baby swan, but the codename I've assigned to her and her case.
I don't follow Angela's line of sight, though. Not until I secure the area. There are the doors we just entered, of course. An emergency exit in the back left corner of the large dining room. The doors to the kitchen are hidden down a hallway that leads to the restrooms and another emergency exit. The restaurant isn't very busy tonight, approximately twenty total diners, made up entirely of couples with the exception of one business meeting. There are likely more staff in this building than there are patrons. Normally that would leave me unsettled, but it doesn't matter tonight.
Tonight, I'm only concerned about one subject in particular.
"Two for Cullen," I tell the hostess, slyly slipping her a twenty dollar tip. "The table in the far right corner, please."
"Yes, sir."
I don't have to be a mind reader to know what she's thinking. She assumes I want privacy with my date to kiss and canoodle without everyone's eyes on us. Of course, she would never guess the real reason I want this seat is to have a direct line of sight to…
Her.
There she is. My newest case.
It's always strange when I see them in person for the first time. Usually I can monitor my subjects for years and never see them in the flesh. Still, when I do get that chance, it's always a strange feeling. I've only been watching her for a little over a week and yet it's like I've watched her come to life before me.
And there's something about Isabella that calls for trouble, I can smell it from across the room. It's no wonder I'm 'meeting' her sooner than most of my other subjects.
Jacob leads her to her seat with his hand on the small of her back, letting the hostess pull her seat out rather than him. He's too comfortable, already. It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Agent Weber and I work very well together. We trade shifts of watching Bella without exchanging a single word, our eyes peeled for any unusual activity.
Things seem to be going well enough. Jacob is certainly the charmer, making her laugh and smile so effortlessly I'm almost jealous. Almost.
It's easy to see what he sees in her. She's stunning in that dress, with her cheeks rosy from the mixture of the champagne he ordered for them and his words. Her hair shines under the soft lights, shades of gold and red I didn't notice before when I was only watching through a screen.
And her eyes…
Fuck, they're so big and brown they're disarming from all the way across the room.
Yes, I can see why he would want to make her laugh like that. Why he would be touching her on their first date and probably fantasizing about those big doe eyes looking up at him while she's on her knees before him.
Yeah. It makes perfect sense.
Angela clears her throat and when I look her way she's smirking at me like I've just let her in on a secret I don't know I have.
"I'm heading to the restroom. Think you can handle this for a bit?"
Fuck, I hope so.
Well? Do YOU think he can handle it? xD
