Chapter 2: Stand Out
Roxanne was leaning against the lockers watching Stacey throw her bag into her locker while retrieving some more pages of her speech she had planned.
"Okay all sorted, you better get going Roxanne, wish me luck!" Stacey said in one breath
"Keep it short" Roxanne told her, to which Stacey gave a half-hearted wave as she ran off.
Roxanne joined the rest of the student faculty filing into the auditorium, the perk of being friends with the student president meant that she got front row seats. Soon enough everyone was inside but most certainly not settled; the end of the school year was nigh and the excitement was palpable, by the time Stacey came out, the students were actively cheering and going wild.
Stacey launched in her end of year speech, much ado about how the school football team attained state success, and that the academic teams placed well in the country, relatively speaking. She was nearing the end of her speech when she was interrupted.
"YO STACEYYYYY, talk to me, talk to me, talk to me bay-baeee!" one of the science kids shouted out.
Roxanne giggled as she saw Stacey rap her fingers against the podium looking thoroughly unimpressed.
". . .and also, I hope you can all attend my totally amazing end of school party next Saturday to watch the Powerline concert on pay-per-view"
To this, the students erupted with even more cheering, Stacey was well known to throw the best parties, it was one of the reasons she was the student president and fairly popular in her own right.
Stacey introduced Principal Mazur before she walked off stage and the mood switched like a light and everyone was silent when he took to the podium and dove headfirst into his usual long-winded speech about doing homework over the summer. No-one was paying attention and more than a few people were yawning in their seats and drowsing off, even Roxanne who was normally quite patient found her eyelids getting heavy and had to support her head with her arm, why couldn't he just tell everyone to have a great summer and be done with this?
While Mazur droned on, an arm and head popped up from behind Roxanne's chair, looking to her right she saw Chad looking at her with confidence, "Say Roxanne, about Stacey's party" he began and gave her a smirk. "How about you and I go together?"
Roxanne had a bit of a blank expression on her face, Chad was a nice enough guy; he was sporty and attractive, but Roxanne also knew for a fact that out of the public eye he was rather dismissive and had an on-again off-again relationship with Lisa – whom most people considered the hottest girl in school – and even that morning she had seen him kissing her on the backwall of the football field. She also noted that he sniggered when that Max kid took a tumble off the bleachers and returned to kissing Lisa, as she concluded, he was a decent enough guy at times.
Just not her guy.
"Oh, thank you, but actually I'm not really looking for a date to Stacey's party, it's just a catch up with friends" she answered diplomatically to him.
Still, it did open up the possibility that other people would ask her to Stacey's, there would be dancing given that the party would be themed around Powerline. While she wasn't the most attractive girl in school, if Chad asked, more would. Maybe for one night she might have to have to bring a date, if only for that night lest she been seen as a social pariah?
As soon as this internal monologue had finished in her head, the lights in the auditorium shut off and a white backdrop began to rise from behind principal Mazur, and as he began to exclaim in surprise a lever was cranked and he suddenly fell through the drama trapdoor with a cry of surprise and laughter was heard from the wings of the stage.
Simultaneously, a figure appeared on the screen, it was a guy in a yellow jumpsuit with an atom on the front of it, he wore some slick shades a cool look on his face.
The figure immediately flashed a grin and struck a pose which led into a song
"Some people settle for typical things
Livin' all their lives, livin' in the wings.
It ain't a question of if
Just a matter of time
Before I move to the start of the line"
Roxanne could have screamed, the heat rose through her body and a twinge in her stomach fluttered uncontrollably, that gut feeling was screaming at her what she saw. It was the boy from before.
It was Max.
She bit her lip to stop her grin from going across her face so obviously, but while she was twirling her hair to keep her hands busy, Stacey looked over to express her surprise to her but had a Cheshire cat smirk on her face as she saw Roxanne give off signs for a long time.
There was no mistaking it – Max Goof was emulating Powerline and was completely owning it like a pro.
"If you're watchin' every move that I make
You gotta believe that I got what it takes
To Stand Out."
He burst through the screen and landed on his feet though he looked like he did this accidentally and stood looking around in shock, it didn't matter, the place was cheering for him on stage and whipping themselves into a frenzy.
"Above the crowd
Even if I gotta shout out aloud
Til mine is the only face you'll see
Gonna staaaaand out.
Til you notice me."
Roxanne had to curl her legs up and hug herself to contain her excitement that was coursing through her, what she couldn't do was take her eyes off him and beaming, oblivious to the superior look Stacey was giving her. Smoke seeped onto the stage floor as he continued dancing with flashes of light and color lit up the auditorium.
"If I could make you could make you stop and take a look at me instead of just
Walking' by…"
He approached her leaning over the stage and several girls screamed, Roxanne mimicked his movements without realizing, seeing her reflection on his shades as he got closer
"There's nothing that I wouldn't do, if it was getting you to notice…"
He was much too close now, all she could see in his shades was her eyes and feeling his breath on her, she shly looked up at him, her body electrified.
"I'm alive.."
And just when she thought that something would happen, he suddenly withdrew and was on his feet on stage.
"All I need is half a chance, a second thought, a second glance will prove
I've got whatever it takes.
It's a piece of cake."
Stacey let out a shriek as he suddenly flew over the student body, picked up a basketball out of someone's hands and dunked it in the hoop on the other side of the auditorium.
"To stand out
Above the crowd
Even if I gotta shout out aloud"
He weaved over several students including a squealing Lisa, but as he swung back through the auditorium, Roxanne clambered on the back of her seat, unaware that the only other light other than on Max, was on her. His hand reached out for hers, and hers for him
For one agonizing moment they were poised to grab one another.
"Til mine is the only face you'll see
Gonna . . stand out. . "
Just as they were about to touch, the music became distorted and cut out, the lights came back on and his momentum stopped, and he spun out of control. Coming to a halt in front of Principal Nazur, who had finally got his way out, and was unimpressed of what had happened. He waited a second before removing the shades of the person in front of him and the students gave a gasp.
"Hey! It's that goof boy!" someone yelled out.
Roxanne was only shocked for a split second, unlike Stacey whose jaw dropped to the floor.
She gave him a radiant smile.
The tingling sensation returned to her stomach stronger than ever.
