Chapter: The first morning in the Magic Realm
Luz returned to reality from the gentle caress of dreamland and came face to face with a owl like face of house demon attached to very long body, staring intently as if Hooty were waiting for her to wake up for hours. Luz yelled in shock and shot backwards right into the headboard. She grabbed her head and moaned in pain. It was way too early for a migraine.
"Hi Luz." Hooty greeted with smile.
"Why do you look at me while I'm sleeping?" Luz asked still rubbing the top of her head.
"You were talking about rainbow zebra in your sleep, and I like to listen. Have nice day!" The house guardian said before completely retracting himself back to the door.
After that the girl got out of bed and suddenly remembered... the events of the past 48 hours.
Luz reached up and fingered at her chest, or more specifically the necklace beneath her shirt. The silver necklace which means she is part of ancient order which guarding the magic, was warm to the touch. She smiled at it, this big smile.
"The first day of the best summer in my life." She mumbled to herself before opening the window in her room. "Good morning, the Boiling Isles," she exclaimed out loud as she looked outside.
"Heyo-dales, little one." Greeted somebody from above, prompting Luz to look up and see it was the large grey hulking troll flying on creature that was a hybrid between a dragon and a motorcycle.
He give her a two-finger salute before dropped out of sight.
"Nice guy." Luz let out as she reeled back in. She practically bouncing off the walls like she is six instead of fourteen. Yet, her enthusiasm was justified.
Today is the beginning of her magic trening.
Admittedly... Yesterday, Eda officially become Luz's mentor. But that day was full of many other things.
First, after they say bye to Katrina and back to the Owl House, the group had to clean up one of the rooms upstairs for Luz. Found her a bed without a Boogeyman under it. And get rid of Luz's backup snake that still was in the house, and dig out their own nesting spots in livingroom.
Then Eda had to explain to the teen what's dangerous or not in the Boiling Isles, which took way longer than the witch expect. Especially since Luz had trouble believing that unicorns are extremely fierce and dangerous creatures, and some little fairy might want to eat her skin.
And finally was incident with a possum who somehow get here from the Human Realm. And Hooty brought it to Luz as welcome gift. So, there was no time to magic training.
After Luz changed into her usual outfit, she went to the bathroom to freshen up. Opening the door, a pair of owls flew out and surprised her.
"'The Owl House' fits very well with this place." Luz said to herself before noticed her Azura book was on the sink counter. Opening it up, she looked herself in the mirror to give herself a pep talk. "This is it, girl." She put the book in her face. "Your first day on the Boiling Isles as a Witches Apprentice! " She exclaimed excitedly.
Luz entered the kitchen just in time to see Jett unscrewing bottle with light brown liquid, using magic to put bread in the toaster. She also noticed a some items flying all over the kitchen with the help of Jett's magic.
The male teen still dressed his sleepwear - black sleeping shorts and T-shirt that says, "Cant Get Out Of Bed Send Help Or Waffles. Just Waffles"
"Morning, Sunbeam." He smiled, "Want some toast?"
"Good morning to you too, and sure."
Jett put in a second slice of bread. The toaster started growling like a small dragon.
"Where is Eda?" Luz asked not diverting her gaze from this toaster.
"We probably won't see her for another hour. Dad isn't home, so nobody try wake her up. And my mom's not really a morning person." Jett yawned as he poured himself a big cup of chocolate milk. "Which reminds me, you might need this."
He walked up to Luz and gently slapped her on the chest, she looked down at her chest to find a "Hello my Name is" sticker on her shirt. The word "LUZ THE HUMAN-APPRENTICE" in large block letters on it.
"Are we expecting any new people?"
"Nope."
*Chukunk!*
With a final wave of warm the toast pops up, edges browned to perfection. Jett use magic to smear jelly on them. Then he put one in his mouth as levitated the other toast on the plate in Luz's hands.
"Eat it, before it gets legs."
"Don't you mean before it gets cold?"
Then, as if in answer to her question, a spider like legs grew out of toast and it started to scuttle frantically across the wooden surface. Luz just watched it jumped off the table onto the floor, and then sneaks out of the half-open back door. They then suddenly heard a familiar voice as it called from outside.
"Toast! I call dibs on it! Hoot!"
The two of them looked out the kitchen window, where Hooty was chasing a toast around the yard with a disturbingly hungry look on his face.
"If you want a new toast, the toaster is plugged in." Jett said as he went to shut the door. He did not actually concern for what just happened in there. So, Luz guessed this is normal thing here.
"We also have box of kellogg's chocolate frosted flakes from your world, if you want." the orange haired boy offered as he get the eggs and milk from the fridge. He put all eggs into the large pan as he poureth milk into small bowl on the table.
"Howlitty" Jett called out quietly. The wooden owlcat on top his staff opened its eyes. It moved tail and wings, leaping gracefully to the table.
Luz watched from her chair as the catowl stretched lazily along the table, perk wide open in a silent meow and then starts drinking from the bowl.
"Jett, what going on?"
He studied the expression on her face, soon his face contoured into realization. "This is Howlitty, my palisman."
"Palisman?" She asked, genuinely curious.
Jett had turned back to small bowl, scratching Howlitty's head. "Palisman is part of witch staff. They are a magic totem that's bonded to witches for life."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Yesterday. I totally forgoten introduce you two to each other. So...Luz meet Howlitty." he would introduce the owlcat, "Howlitty meet Luz."
Luz smiled, "Nice to meet you."
The palisman turned to look at her and chirped in acknowledgement, trotting over to nudge at Luz's outstretched fingers. The girl was positively beaming. Howlitty was very fluffy and pleasant to the touch, and the soft feathers tickling her fingers.
"Su pelaje suave como la seda..." She whispered, still petting a fluffy owlcat's head. Palisman let her stroking its head for a few moments, before back to bowl of milk
"Jett, can I ask something?" Luz asked when the male witchling cooking up.
"Shot."
"Where is your dad?"
"He's on a mission. Should be back by week's end."
"Does he work for the Order?"
Jett shook his head. "Pops is the Seraphicaelum Warrior, one of the most highlights jobs on the Boiling Isles, they are searching, finding and securing, all dangerous anomalies which was created during the disease of Void and have evolved over long periods of time."
"Like what?"
"Well-"
"I smell eggs!"
Both occupants of the kitchen turned their heads to see the source of the voice and the sight of Eda with a small demon perched on her head.
The demon on Eda's head, named King. The Owl Lady claimed that he is lodger. Technically renting would meant payment. In this case there is no payment, so King seemed be rather a family mascot. Which, considering the demon's appearance, may be a good job for him.
Luz met King yesterday, and she had already decided that this little guy is the sweetest demon in this dimension. And hugged him with all love in her heart. Jett and Eda almost had to separate the human girl from this small demon with a crowbar. But it wasn't her fault that King is just sooo adorable.
He's a small canine creature, actually the size of a four-year-old. Something beetwen wolf and fox. Mostly covered in dark gray fur, although his torso and the tip of his fluffy tail were covered in light gray fur. The demon had three fingers plus thumbs and two toes that looking like white claws. He wore a red collar with a big gold tag. His eyes were pink with yellow sclera. And the highlight of his cute appearance was a buffalo-like skull, with a broken horn attached to his head. (Like Cubone in Pokemon.)
"Howdy guys." Jett taken the canine demon from his mom's head.
Eda just groaned in annoyance, walki in kitchen. At this very moment it would be hard to believe that the half awake woman in nightwear consisting of a plum sweater with amber cuffs, a stained, long, violet nightgown, and light yellow bunny slippers holds the title of the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles.
"Good morning, Eda the Owl Lady." Luz smiled to her mentor.
"Ugh!" Eda was giving Luz an appraising look, golden eyes flitting to sticker on her shirt. "Ah, yes, I have an apprentice now."
"Told ya. Mom couldn't even remember my name before she get a cup of Apple Blood." Jett said as he settled King into his highchair a few moments later.
"You mean, Apple Juice?" Luz asked confused figuring it was probably a brand name.
"No." Eda answered holding her mug filled with the said drink as a drowsy small owl poked its face out of her wild mane-like hair.
Owl cooed, yawned, then noticed Luz. It flew to girl's plate and hooted to her.
"Hello cute guy." Luz smiled as she began to tickle the little owl, causing it to coo in joy as it unfurled it's left wing to get more scratches.
"Your first morning here and my and mom's palismans already likes ya." Jett smirk as the owl started drinking from Howlitty's bowl, the owlcat was fine with that. "You have that thing, girl."
"Yeah, yeah. She is an palismans lover and they love this bonebreaker hugger." King chimed in, "Now, where's the food? Your king is hungry!"
"Looks like someone woke up on the right side of the bed this morning." Luz said, scratching a little demon behind his horn. "And he's grumpy."
"King of demons can be as grumpy as he want! And his tummy requires food!" King punctuated his point by slapping his little paws into chair, looking cute more than threatening. "Why is there no food in my mouth, yet?"
"You have to be patient, your majesty." Jett said as he back to making breakfast.
Eda, on the other hand, was sitting in her chair sipping her morning drink. With every sip, a bit more elaborate.
"What?" the witch asked when the cup was half-empty, and she noticed Luz is staring at her.
"I am ready for my first day of Witch Apprenticeship!" Luz answered, suddenly smiling bright and full of optimism.
"Good." Eda then took another sip from her mug.
"Soooooo? Are you going to teach me spells? Hexes? Am I going to get a magic staff?" the teen girl bounced over in excitement. "Do you have a dangerous magical quest for me!?"
"Calm dow a bit." Eda was wondered why humans possessed some odd ability to look like they had stars in their eyes. "Being a witch doesn't happen overnight. And who go on magical quests? This is real life not some animated fantasy series."
"Says the witch with the portal to another dimension." Jett made his comment.
"Smart ass." Eda glanced over to her son as she sipped her drink.
"Okay, so no quests." Luz was a bit disappointed but a different idea just instinctively popped into her mind. "How about a secret mission, such as for example sneak into the prison for outlaws and misfits run by the ruthless shape-shifter, led a riot to help prisoners escape, and used something explosive for the finishing blow."
"The Order will give you mission, not me." said Eda, taking another sip of her beverage. "But I have to admit I like the way you think."
"Then-"
"Look, kiddo. I'm mentor here and we do this my way." Eda interrupted her apprentice, "And rule number one is no lessons, asked about lessons or magical training talk until I finished my Apple Blood and breakfast is eaten up."
"So you will teach me something after breakfast?" Luz asked, as excited like a child on Christmas morning.
"That was question about lesson. Learn to listen." the witch replied with smirk.
"Hey," Jett cut off the conversation by summoning four plates. "Breakfast is served ."
"Yes!" King cheered.
Luz looked at food on her plate. Yellow-green scrambled eggs with little pinkish tentacles and something that looked like bacon.
"You can eat it. I asked right person, yesterday, before we left the Order headquarters." Jett answer to the unspoken question.
Luz mean to cut a piece of her breakfast, but the food just growled at her.
"You can eat it, but that does not mean that breakfast will not fight." Jett added before hit his own breakfast in the middle with a fork.
"I guess I'll just have to get used to that." Luz shrugged, her eyes on the breakfast plate.
