Chapter: Lesson Number One

By now breakfast was done, Jett and Eda were already dressed and everyone move to livingroom. Both teenagers settled on the couch. Jett don't neet be here. He's curious, though, as to how the lesson will goes.

"From what I gather, all your knowledge of witches comes from it." Eda pulled out a book. It was Good Witch Azura 5.

"More or less." Luz admitted.

"So, I'm gonna need you to take every knowledge of witches you have... and flushed it down the toilet." The Owl Lady throws book on the human artifacts pile in the corner of the room. "Because it nonsense and that book's flowery language is an insult to witches everywhere."

Luz felt she should defend Azura book line, but she couldn't argue with Eda. She is the witch here. And her mentor.

"Now you'll learn something valuable about magic." Eda begined, "But remember, I do not repeat any lesson. So, take all the notes you need. And if you got questions after you can go to library or pester Jett."

"Do you mind if I record this?" Luz asked as she took out her phone.

"Make sure you get my good side." Eda replied as Luz began recording. "Alright, let's start class. There are 4 main types of magic users in the Magic Realm: witches, shamans, alchemists and wizards. But the last one are generally a old hippies equipped with glittery pyjamas."

Luz looked at Eda with a confused expression. "I always thought that wizard was some sort of male witch."

"Say that again and you're sleeping outside." Her mentor threatened.

"Noted."

"So, just to be clear, I will be train you to be a witch. But nothing like this one in your flowery book. A true witch is being your OWN witch."

"My own witch...I like it. I want be that kind of witch!" Luz said eagerly.

"And being ma's apprentice, you're already on good way." Jett said.

"Alright, so the basics that you need to know: magic-related things and a staff," Eda held out her hand. It had been silent for a second before the sound of distant crashing reached their ears. Then staff flew in and being caught by the Owl Lady. "Witches are awarded their staff from school."

"Like a graduation gift." Luz said as Eda nodded in agreement.

"Point being, the usual way is you get it from school. Still, you might as well do it yourself. I for one, made Owlbert." the witch said as she unscrewed the wooden owl from her staff, bringing it to life and holding it in her hands.

"So you're kind of like his parent?" Luz asked.

Eda seemed confused by this question, but she answered anyway, "In a way, yes."

"But by that logic, I'm younger brother and you're grandma." Jett commented with smirk, stroking his palisman's head. Making Howlitty purr.

"So, I'm a silver fox with two sons." Eda said with a pose while Owlbert flew on to Jett's left shoulder.

"Mom is weird right, big bro?" He asked Owlbert as brown owl hooted in agreement, nuzzling his cheek.

"So, cute." Luz said as she brought her hands to her cheeks. "I can't wait to made my own staff and palisman."

"You're way off 'staff step' here." the Owl Lady said, getting everyone's attention again. "Now, back to the lesson, a witch's staff has power embedded into it, but before you can get a staff you need to know how to cast on your own."

"I can do this." Luz said as she held up a large, prepared light glyph and activated it, changing it into a large flash of light.

"And do you know what human like you needs to do to cast other spells?" Eda asked, looking down on Luz.

"No." The girl shot a pleading look to Eda to explain, wanting to know how do this.

"Neither do I."

"What?!" Luz asked as she blinked in confusion.

"Look, whole glyph trick, harks back to a time when the witches were cooperating with a human enchantress. It was a specific way to cast spells, created to discover the nature of two different kinds of magic. But soon after the creation of the Veil, most had forgotten the glyphs way because we didn't need it. All I know is that glyphs work in a similar way as spell circles but were created in slightly different manners than normal spells, and was invented in the Boiling Isles."

"Oh," said Luz, unsure of what else to say.

"However, it is still a magic. Which brings us to rules of the process."

"What's it?"

"All kinds of magic has three parts... power to change reality, focus to direct that change, and an effect, that change in the real world. In your world, humans think magic is made out of thin air, but that's stupid. Everything comes from something. Let me ask you, kid. Where do you think witches magic comes from?" Eda asked as she glanced at Luz.

"Umm…" Luz blinked as Eda tossed her staff to the side. "The heart?"

"Actually, you're right." Jett said and Luz was super happy with that awnser.

"No really... " Eda pulls out a scroll from her hair and unrolls it to reveal a very disturbing sight. It showed a large green sack attached to the heart, "It comes from a magic bial sack attached from a witch heart."

"Oh, gross! Can I keep that?" Luz pointed at picture.

"No." Eda answered, putting the scroll back in her hair. "Any other questions?"

"What is the source of my power?" Luz brought up a pretty decent question. "I don't have a magic sack."

"True," The witch agreed, putting a finger underneath her chin, "The Ley lines had disappeared long ago... So, if I had to guess, I'd say you're using a isles's wild magic like the first witches before we get the sack of magic."

Luz blinked in surprise, "Wild magic?"

Eda nodded as she began to explain. "Magic can exist on its own, independent of any spell, such as the sapphire werelights in the bogs by Misfit, the wish well in Charoca's Caves in the floating Lunarins Mountains, and the singing crystal reef on Drinian sea. Wild magic such as this is treacherous, unpredictable, and often stronger than any we can cast. It can't be under control, but some magic users can connect with it and use a tiny shred of this magic to power their spells."

"But how I use this, I didn't even know about wild magic." Luz noted with a tilt of her head.

"It's like breathing." Jett told her, "Automatically and unconsciously."

Luz was slightly taken aback. She wasn't sure what to think about this. The sole fact that she can use magic is quite extraordinary. And the information her glyphs are powered by unbridled wild magic... that's another thing that she added to "something new and unexpected" pile.

"Okay step two - focus." Eda said, and her voise snapped Luz back to reality and from her thoughts. "This part is easy, you just imagine how your spell have to work and let this thought fusion with magic. But If you lose much of your focus, the effect can be truly problematic."

"Such as for example caused the house to shake and levitate upside down." King comment, looking at Jett.

"That was one time! One!"

"And it was funny!" Hooty shouted. "I had another look at the world from a different perspective."

"Shut up Hooty," Eda said, causing the bird tube to grumble. She then looked back at Luz, "And last part the consequence in the world of the magic being unleashed, in witches case, to cause a effect must be used the spell circle."

Eda made a small circle made from gold magic energy. The circle soon materialized a small orb of light. The orb descended down right to King's face and popped like a bubble making him cute sneeze.

"Awwww. That was the cutest sneeze ever!" Luz said in a babying voice.

"I'm NOT cute." King scoffed in offense

"Hey, demonic dude. It's okay to be cute." Jett petted the skull-headed demon, "Everyone's got their thing. My thing is being cool. And you, you're cute."

"EEEEYYYHHH!" King squealed in rage before ran to second floor still screaming in such a high pitch that Jett couldn't hold back anymore and bust out laughing with his mom doing the same.

"It's like a little tea kettle every time." Eda said as she wiped a tear from her eye with a snort. "Okay, where were we?" She resuming her teaching role.

"Spell circles." Luz replied.

"So, everything depends on the spell circle. The bigger the spell circle, the more powerful the spell." the witcht formed a much bigger gold ring within the air and a gigantic ball of flames crackled within her palm.

Luz looked at fire orb in awe, wondering the spell while Jett summoned marshmallow bag from kitchen and roasted them over fire.

"Exactly the same rule applies to glyphs. So to sum it up, own power source, focus, and bigger is better." the Owl Lady made her fire ball vanish, "Lesson's over! Get ready. We got to leave in about 5 minutes."

"What?" Both Luz and Jett said at once.

"Working with the Order is profitable." Eda told Luz, "But I like be independent. So aside from a helping them from time to time, I have a few other ways to make money.

"And almost one-third of them is legal." King said as he back to livingroom only to jump up on a treasure chest to take a nap.

Eda continued like she hadn't heard the little demon at all.

"My second favorite of all is selling the finest homemade elixirs and potions. Last night I got the big order for very rare potion worth a lot snails but I'm missing the last two, and most-important ingredients. And you, freeloaders, will help me find them."

"So, lesson is really over?" Luz asked, putting down her phone.

"Yes." Eda responded, making the teen grumble a bit and stare at her. "I learned you the necessary basics, and you know that you need other glyphs to new spells."

"But how can I found more glyphs?"

"Ask me next lesson." Eda picked up King, ignoring complaints about disturbs his snooze, then scampered out of the livingroom and left the two teenagers alone.

"My first magic lesson, and I didn't even learned a new spell." Luz complain.

"If it's any consolation, my first magis lesson was - If you blow something up correctly, you have nothing left to fix." Jett said as he hand her a perfect golden marshmallow.

Notes:I know this chapter wasn't very "magical", but next will be more interesting.
