Chapter: A little favor

A few days had passed since Luz meet Lilith and Harlow. The teenagers and demon were currently in the kitchen as Jett was stirring a spicy phoenix chili pot on the stove while Luz and King were sitting at the table. King relished Luz's belly scratches, while Luz was speaking on a crystal ball.

"So then they say I can't remove my own thumb, like they know the human body more than I do!" Luz said, talking into the crystal ball as Gus appeared on it. "But then I show them this."

Luz made it seem like she pulled her left thumb off her hand, showing him the oldest magic trick humans have to date. The fake finger removal trick.

"Your thumb! You cut off your thumb!" Gus said as he grabbed his head in worry and panic, though Jett giggled at Luz's trick.

"Calm down Gus. This is just-" Luz tried to say before an screaming sound cut her off.

Gus jolted at the sound and shut his left eye before pulling up his sleeve, revealing the source of the noise to be a small purple devil with a large eye that had clock hands in it and four yellow teeth biting into Gus' wrist.

"Oh, time for school!" He pocked the eye and the screaming stopped as he pulled his sleeve back down. "Talk to you later, Luz."

"Bye, Gus!"

"Wait!" Gus suddenly remembered Luz's thumb, "What about your thumb!?" He asked, still panicking.

"We have some very cutting-edge glue here." Jett said as Luz waved over the crystal ball, ending the chat. "Illusionists. They're so dramatic."

Luz opened her mouth to say something, but thought better of it. Her eyes still glued to the crystal ball. The gears seemed to turn in her head. Then suddenly asked, "Hey Jett, have you ever been to school?"

"Yes, I graduated a year and half ago." Jett sniffed the pot content and sighed delightedly.

"You did?" Luz asked in weird curiosity.

He waved a hand, "I skipped a two or three grades. Principal Bump really wanted me to finished Hexside as quickly as possible."

"What sort of a school Hexside is?"

"It has its drawbacks, but is rather okay compared with some other schools. You'd probably like that place." Jett said as he smiled and then paused, "But why the sudden interest in school things?"

"I'd like sign up for the magic school." Luz declared.

"Eda would consider it a betrayal." King warns his human friend from his place on her laps, "And you don't want get on her bad side."

"I'm not going to give up an mentor." Luz argued, "I just feel like I'm stuck. From the start of my magic training, we work only on the Light Glyph."

"And you've learned how to use this glyph in all sorts of ways." Jett pointed out.

"Yet I have still not been able to connect to the isles!" Luz replied, sounding frustrated, "I want to learn a new spell. I want to be like the witches who were able to found the glyphs. I miss something, I don't know what. Eda neither. Maybe I need a real magic school to solve this problem."

"Hexside teaching others kind of things. And I seriously doubt the school would have helped you connect with the Boiling Isles." Jett said, making Luz groaned and put her head down on the table. "Your glyphs are powered by wild magic. All schools teach you how to cast spells with a spell circles powered by magic sack."

"Why nobody wrote a book about found your link with the magic, for human beginners." Luz said, half to herself.

Jett shrugged as throw a few cow eyes in the pot, "Some things you just can't teach with books. Some things your heart only know, so you trust your heart and let its lead you to what you need."

"Wow." Luz looked up at him, "Very profound words."

"Really?" Jett turned to her, "I read it on piece of paper that has been inside the cookie which Owlbert brought from the Human Realm yesterday."

"That cookies was quite tasty, but I don't like the filling." King climbed up onto the counter to looked at Luz's face, "Why would even humans put paper in food?"

"It was fortune cookies. The piece of paper inside, a "fortune", usually an aphorism, which can magically predict the future." Luz explains off handedly.

"Cool." Jett made himself a bowl of chilli, "On Pixtopia city, there's a place where you can get calzones that'll tell you how you're going to die." He slumped into his chair, just as Eda and Michael approached.

Eda was still wearing her pajama, while Michael was dressed in his two-tone trousers and nice flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

"Eda, hun, you've got a fever." Michael said, his gigantic wings were tucked behind him

"I'm fine." Eda said but she look a little whiter than usual.

"You should go back to nest."

"You have a nest?" Luz got excited. "I want a nest! We can have a nest party! " She then gasped in realization and looked to Jett who gave her a amusement expression.

"No. I did not hatch from an egg if that's what your thinking."

"Hun, you're sick." Michael said, his wings tight to his back.

"I'm NOT." Eda denied.

Michael sighed. He always thought witches fell into one of two categories when sick. There were the witches who didn't want help and insisted they were fine, and then there were the witches that turned into complete and utter babies.

His wife had fallen into the former category, she couldn't admit that she is sick. Even if she had a fever, and haven't got the energy to got to pour Apple Blood in a cup.

"How many fingers am I holding up?" He asked her, holding up three fingers.

"The law says I don't have to answer that." Eda said resolutely, arms crossed.

"How many fingers?" Michael asked, looking decidedly unimpressed with her not so subtle avoidance.

"I don't know what that has to do with anything." Eda grumbled, but then clutching at the edge of table as the room spun dangerously around her.

"Simple question for a person in a robust state of health." Michael countered, "How many fingers?"

Eda groaned, while focusing the eye on Michael's hand. "Uhhhhh, four."

"Four?"

"I'm not sick!" Eda shouted a second before she sneezed and her head got separated from the body. It was sent flying over to Luz who screamed as she caught it.

"Luz, stop screaming." The head said, gaining an annoyed expression. "I already have a headache."

Luz screamed again before calming down. "Eda! Are you okay?"

"Yeah, this just happens when you get older." The head answered.

"Does it?" Luz asked in a creeped out tone.

"To humans no." Michael clarified walking up to Eda's body that was crawling around trying to find it's head. And then hoists his wife body over his shoulder. "Whether you like it or not, you're going back to nest."

"I'll kick your ass." Eda said when he lifting up her head from Luz's lap.

"And I love you, too, bae."

"Okay. This morning makes 8 on the weirdness scale." Luz said after a two or three minutes.

"Mm..."Jett said, placing one of his hands on his chin in thought.

"Are you worry about your mom?"

"More about our house."

"Why?"

At that moment, a faint sneeze noise sounded from the upper floor. The side of the house on the first floor exploded; part of wall rocketed off and splashed into the ocean.

"That's why," Jett said. "Hooty are you ok?" He asked as Hooty came stretching into the kitchen.

"There's a draft on part my body that I didn't even know I have." Hooty said, swinging his head around.

"I'll take that as a yes."

"Hey, kids." Michael yelled to the rest of the house, walking down the stairs. "Eda needs spend the day in nest and I have to stay with her and make sure her magic don't make trouble, which is why I need a favour."

The tasks a.k.a favor were easy. Jett take care of the patrol in the Throat Valley problem for his dad. While Luz and King made potions deliveries all over Bones Burrow.

Luz was very glad they get this job. She just love seeing all the types of strange inhabitants and strange buildings. And since her first visit Luz had learned a lot of this city from her standpoint as a human.

"And that was the last delivery." Luz said as she and King come out of building.

"Then why are you keep walking?" King question as they continued to march through town. "We can break for lunch now. And I can pick pocket anyone we pass in way to the food stand."

"Michael asked me to get some fresh resin from the Oak of Sorrows before we back. Morton sold off the resin, but he drew a map so we could find the Oak of Sorrows." Luz said as King stopped next to her and began climbing up to her right shoulder to ride on.

"Fine. Let's get this over with!" King said as Luz took map out of the bag.

"The Forest of Ascetir, here we come!"

The Forest of Ascetir looks really normal, like... for forest in Magic Realm. If King hadn't been there, Luz would forget that she actually is in another dimension.

"Left, left, I think." Luz said while scratching her head.

"No, I thought it was left and then right." King said as he turned back to the path they walked before.

"Hmm." Luz hummed as she took another look at the map. The description was clear, but to say the least the map didn't look accurate. It was also poorly drawn. But on the other hand, Morton was up all night taste testing new poisons for his potion store and he wasn't feeling well when he draw map for Luz.

"I think we took a wrong turn a couple trees ago." She said, turning the map upside down.

"We lost." King groaned.

"Think positive!"

"Okay, I'm positive we will get more lost in there." King said sarcastic.

"We just need used something as a means of orientation. Something... Like this," Luz said as she went over to kind of firebush that has plentiful red tubular flowers, "It's beautiful and can be seen in the distance."

"Don't touch!" King grabbed her leg, so she tripped and landed face down on grass.

As Luz struggled up to one knee, King put himself between the girl and the firebush.

"They're just nice flowers." Luz didn't understand why he do this.

"Nice flowers?" King taken a two step toward flowers. "Just because something is beautiful doesn't mean it isn't deadly."

It was as if the universe itself had confirm that he was right about the firebush. Because a butterfly land on the flower just next to King's head. It changed the color before fire a sparkling green dust at demon face. He started coughing and wouldn't stop.

"King! Are you okay?!" Luz exclaimed as she went over to him. The dust scattered to the wind and King stops coughing.

King stayed there for a moment, silent and motionless, just starring. Then his pupil dilated rapidly.

"How did we get out here in the middle of the ocean?" The demon asked in awe.

"What?" Luz asked as she leaned closer to King face. "King, what are you talking about?"

King scanned the place, as if looking for person who speak to him. His eyes finally settled on Luz and then he yelled, "Aaaah! Zombie! You don't get my brain!"

Before Luz fully process what he said, the demon moved off into the trees screaming at the top of his lungs.

"King come back!" Luz followed after him, "Wait! King!"
