Chapter: First mission - Part I

Khonvoum flipped through yet another of the innumerable book of magic wepons that lay on the table, making notes as he did so. The private part of the Order of Keepers' central room (with its large table) made an excellent place to spread out his materials, allowing him to compare information from the various tomes.

He was coming to the end of a very successful research on Dyrnwyn – Sword of Rhydderch Hael.

*SHHHH*

*FLOP* *FLOP* *FLOP*

Khonvoum's brows drew together as he turned around. He know that sound all too well. Aisha and Sidon break off their game of chess to looked at the same thing that Khonvoum's eyes watching very carefully.

A magic tome created by Morgan Le Fay herself, that records all unexplained magical disturbances around the human world. It's called by the Council of Four the "Missions Book".

"You heard it too?" Sidon asked other members of the Council, eyeing the book suspiciously.

Khonvoum nodded while Aisha's forehead wrinkled in confusion.

Suddenly the Missions Book, which had been mysteriously silent for weeks, began to rattle in its stand, light shining as pages were quickly turned. An eerie sound emanated from the book - as though the pages had come to life and were screaming. They all stared, dumbfounded, as the sound from the now levitating book grew louder and louder.

Khonvoum called out 'what the heck' in the mix of a screech and a hiss before trying to pull the magic volume back to its stand. Moment after that Sidon ran up and took hold of book in his both hands and pulled down.

Behind them, the last member of the Council, Dion, came skidding to a stop at the entrance to the room, watching in amazement as the Mission Book fought to free itself from both men's grip.

"Something I should know about?" Dion asked warily, searching all three faces for explain.

"This thing's about to take flight!" Sidon shouted down, annoyed. And kind of... cheerfully?

"{Now get your shaman ass over here and help us hold this damn book down!}" Khonvoum called out in his guttural speech sounds, trying to maintain his grip on the volume.

Dion just looked at Aisha with eyeing the struggle in the corner of the room with interest. "Aisha, would you...?"

He asked, pushing the book down onto the table with his magic.

Aisha eyed the Missions Book with interest. "Hush, hush, hush." she whispered, moving a hand over the book. "Be Still. All is well." The book ceased to struggle, laying flat on the table with no further sign of life.

"Really, how do you do it?" Sidon asked when he could finally get his voice to work again. "That only works when you do it."

"Well, nothing quite like a woman's touch." Aisha told him.

Dion, in the meantime, had sauntered over to the other side table and was reading over Khonvoum's shoulder as he looked at the new pages that had appeared. "I see, something survived in one of the secret cache in Human Realm."

Khonvoum let out a short series of grunts that meant, "{Yes, and what do you think?}"

"Hmmmm…" Dion exaggerated some thinking time while the others eagerly awaited a response. "It's probably a good time to send Team of Light on the first mission.

"That's our first mission?" Katrina seemed to be on the verge of stunned speechlessness.

"You're sending us to Paris?" Jett threw the Council of Four a questioning look.

"To found an dragon egg?" Luz couldn't help the slight excitemen creeping into her words.

"Yes, yes and yes." Sidon simply confirms.

"So, Paris was once a the seat of Dragon Riders..." Luz is starting to sound very, very confused, like she's puzzling something out. "Wait! How is it possible some dragon is still alive after centuries on the Human Realm? I thought most of magic creatures were gone, along with the Ley lines."

"Luz, you misunderstood us." Dion said bluntly from his seat, "In your world all dragons extinct."

"But you just said that our team're going to Paris to get the dragon egg back." Luz said, sounding a little confused now. "Well, then, something must have laid an egg."

With a motion of Aisha's fingers, a spell circle appeared showing different depictions that almost seemed like drawings that moved as she was explaining

"True, yet dragon eggs would hatch only when environmental conditions were stable enough to ensure to a baby dragon's survival. Dragons have an immense pool of magic energy, so the hatchling could spend a many years in egg before dragon comes to outside. However, if hatchling spends too long in egg, their magic loses ties with dragon, by sending a short magic impulses away to the surroundings."

The viewing circle vanished.

"Ley lines used to absorb the dragon egg's radiation. But without them, it becoming more intense to a point where create a big crack in the Veil. And will attract every wild dragon and big predator for miles around."

"That's why you must bring this last egg here. To the Boiling Isles." Dion finished, pointing out a already prepared portal to human world.

"You can count on us." Luz said as she and her friends walking towards the portal until Aisha's magic pulled them back.

"You can't go on this mission yet."

"Why?" Three voices asked.

"You two're too easy to spot." Dion pointed at Jett and Katrina, "You must look more like humans during the mission."

"Oh!" Luz cheered, "You can use the look of oc character from my Azura fanfic."

"Thanks, Luz. But I have idea for my new look." Jett said as he drew a spell circle, suddenly putting himself into a white button-down shirt, black shirt with five horizontal stripes around the chest, which were colored, blue jeans and orange sneakers with white laces. Around his arm was a sling backpack with cat paw on them.

Then cast a quick illusion spell to cover his pointy ears and change his hair and eyes color. He was now a blonde and green-eyed.

At the same time, Katrina turned her flames hair into a gold blonde hair done in a high ponytail. She wore a black and white stripped shirt while also wearing a yellow jacket and white capris. On her feet were a pair of white flats. Around her arm slung a white handbag.

"Now you can go." Sidon said with small nod.

"{Remember to be careful. Dragon Riders probably secure crypt with eggs.}" Khonvoum warn a teens in his mostly hisss language. "{The Keepers think before they act.}"

Luz who didn't understand him just nodded and come through the portal.

"We'll be careful, sir, I promise." Katrina said respectfully before followed Luz.

"Jett." Dion stopped the boy before he left, "I hope you tou took General Khonvoum's words to heart."

"Sure thing boss." Jett said, giving the Council of Four a salute, as he then comically jumped out of the room, making sure to close the portal door behind him.

It's been an hour since Team of Light were sent to the Human Realm, and they're not closer to finding the dragon egg.

"Guys, is it just me or we're just turning in circles?" Luz asked, looking around as they keep walking.

"We are." Jett responds, pointing at the statue, "I've seen that same golden statue five times."

"That's not the same statue." Katrina said as Jett and Luz turned around.

"Yes, I'm." The living golden statue a.k.a guy who works as a street performer told them.

"Thanks buddy." Jett dropped the coin to a man and go sit on the bench.

"We can't lost. We have map." Katrina argue. Half complain.

"I think it's out of date ." Luz pulled out the map as she sit down too.

Three teens looking at map of dragon riders hideouts in France that have been catalogued before the Veil existed. So it is out of date, to say the least.

"Then I guess we are officially can toss this map in the garbage." Jett said like it was the best thing to do.

"In which case we need to found the tag." Katrina said, pulling the Mission paper out her handbag. "The Dragon Riders marked the space around dragon eggs vault with dragon statue." She explained, "The statue is probably still there even though the city has changed."

"This website says the Fontaine Saint-Michel features two winged dragons on either side." Luz said as she held up her phone, showing a picture of fontaine.

"But it was constructed in 1858–1860. We're looking for something much older." Katrina noticed.

"Then let's ask somebody for directions." Luz looked around, "The locals knew the city better than anyone."

"Good idea. Excuse me, is there a dragon statue around here?" Jett asked the pedestrian, but he does not respond.

"A STATUE!"

The man cringed as Jett yelling, "WE LOOKING FOR A DRA- whoa! "Jett gets pulled back by Katrina.

"Easy Birdbrain, he's not deaf, he just speaks a different language." Katrina told him.

"Oh." Jett turned to man, "Sorry about that."

He smiles until Jett screamed even louder in his ear, he cringes even more. "I AM SORRY! APOLOGIZIO! YOU UNDERSTAND?!"

Katrina facepalm.

Luz, meanwhile, came up to policeman on horse.

"Excuse me, sir, do you speak English?"

"Yes," He nodded, "Do you need help, young lady?"

"I and my friends're looking for a dragon statue. Do you know where we might find it?"

"I don't remember any dragon statue in Paris. But if you like this kind of things, I recommend a visit to the Notre Dame. Gargoyles are particularly worth seeing. They even looks a bit like a dragons."

Luz thanked before back to her friends.

"Any news, Sunbeam?" Jett asked.

"I guess we should check the Notre Dame." Luz said as they all walk across the street and into the entrance of the Subway.

"So, this is major modes of public transport in Human Realm? Jett asked as they were standing, waiting in an underground station in Paris.

Being in the Underground was thus not really common for Luz, but since they can't flying on witch staff in Human Realm and because Jett and Katrin were rather fascinated by Human Subway, there they were, standing in the station, waiting for a train to arrive to take them to the closest station to the city centre.

"Yes, what do you think?" Luz asked with smile.

"Smells a bit weird here, but looks okay to me." Jett said with a shrug of his shoulders.

"It's different than I thought it would be here." Katrina scanning place with her eyes.

They once more looked at the map of Paris' Underground, checking once more where they should get down, once they were in a train.

"Actually, what the dragon eggs looks like?" Luz asked, all of a sudden.

"Every egg is different." Katrina replied.

"Wow this is..."

"Amazing!" Luz shouted happily from behind Jett. "How is he doing it?"

"Focus guys! It's mission not vacation." Katrina shoos her friends away from the street performer like someone chasing away a vulture, fire in her eyes. Yet, she tossed a street performer a 20 euro note.

Two more hours of looking. And they still found nothing, also Jett and Luz started acting like tourists last half-hour.

"It can be two in one, cuz. Now, smile for the camera!" Jett said as he summoned his scroll, getting a photo of him with the Notre Dame Cathedral in the background along with Katrina's angry scrunching face.

"First don't use magic." Katrina said, looking around to make sure nobody noticed this, "And two did you must be you so childish?"

Jett titled his head and smiled at Katrina. "I am teenager." Then something caught the attention of the boy, before addressing Luz again. "Hey Luz, who is this guy with makeup acting like he's trapped in the invisible box?"

Katrina rolled her eyes as Jett and Luz came up to the mime. Almost everything in Paris appeared to distracting these two. It would be a lie to say that Katrina wasn't fascinated by the wonders of the city around her.

However, unlike her team members, she had a self-discipline and willpower. So, finding the dragon egg is her top priority.

Then somone thursted a flyer providing additional information about the educational observatory with planetarium into her hands. Katrina read about the the next show. It show will be at two o'clock. And her extraordinary willpower slackened.

Okay. One little hour certainly did no harm. It's not as if anybody else come to city because of the same reason we are. Katrina told herself.

But she was mistaken.

The teen wizard Hisirdoux, or just Douxie nowadays, and his loyal familiar Archie - the proud magical feline, just lately arrived in Paris.

They'd just arrived at the top of the building with Douxie standing with one of his feet placed on a small chimney while Archie jumped on other chimney.

"Do you feel that, Archie? Air is full of dispersed magic." Douxie said as a another invisible wave of magic passed through the city.

"Yes. But I still say we shouldn't be here." Archie said quietly.

"If something goes wrong, we can go back to our home in one second." Douxie patted his satchel, in which he keep a magical artifact to open inter-dimensional shadow portals through the Shadow Realm.

"Morgan entrusted the Shadow Staff to you. Only for emergencies. It's not your private TARDIS."

Douxie hold back his snort and rolled his eyes. "You're the one who keeps using it to sneak into the Order of the Keepers."

Archie didn't answer at first. "I'm doing this for a good reason."

"So I am." Douxie responded with a slight smile. He watch people while they walking down the streets. All people remain unaware of the delicate magic aura in air.

Then Douxie pulls out a small binocular, looks through it at city. See if he can find anyone or anything that deviate from the norm, and could have something to do with the myster magic energy with appeared out of nowhere.

Archie voice breaks the silence. "Do you realize that, whatever's going on here, it's not our business."

"I'm just curious to know what is the source of this magic. Surely there's no harm in th-" Douxie just stops in mid-sentence.

"What's wrong?" Archie asked, his ears positioned slightly forward.

Douxie looked at a familiar face in the crowd, and after a moment said"It's Luz."

Archie follows his gaze and saw the girl he know from Douxie's stories about his job waiter in the cafe, "And?"

"And we're in Paris."

The familiar didn't seem too impressed with that response, "It's summer. She's on vacation, that's all."

"I see her mom go to work in the morning." Douxie told him and lowered his voice. "Wait! You said you saw human in the order library. And that person look a lot like Luz."

"She probably just had the misfortune to run into crack in the Veil." Archie tried to reason with him, "And some Keepers take her to the Order to administer her the Kraken ink."

"It's no coincidence she's here in Paris, when this mysterious wave of magic appeared out of nowhere. Only a two hours ago" Douxie rubbed his chin, gears turning in his head and excitement taking over as he thought about this. "She has necklace with star." He said, looking through binoculars again, "THIS star. Luz is the Keeper!"

"And I'm actually a descendant of the Titans." Archie scoffed sarcastically.

"Archie -"

"Luz IS human, and even if she is the Keeper, it doesn't change anything. We have a mission to attend to. And Merlin made it very clear we can't talk to the Order of Keepers until Unniass showed up."

"And what if Unniass wasn't up for another millennium?" Douxie said with a grimace.

"You're immortal. We both can wait." Archie anwsered firmly.

"I'm slowly getting fed sick and tired of waiting." Douxie muttered, mostly to himself.

Archie's tail wiggled in the air behind him, "Do you want broke the trust that your mentor and mother have in you?"

Douxie let his back lean on chimney. Fail Morgan Le Fay and Merlin Ambrosius is the last thing he want. He owed them everything.

He lost his parents when he was a kid. Since he didn't have any relatives, he was supposed sent to an orphanage. But enchantress Morgan Le Fay decided to taken Douxie under her wing after a chance meeting with him at castle courtyard. Morgan did not explain why she did this, but Douxie appreciated a second shot at family. Morgan was a loving guardian who introduced him to Merlin.

At first, Merlin was cold and bitter with Douxie and his familiar. But he grew to be caring and nicer to Douxie. And when Merlin noticed the young boy's magical heritage, he because his mentor in the art of magics.

Douxie loved his foster family, and when the Great War broke out, he wants stood by their side until the end. Merlin and Morgan had other plans, though.

The day before a final battle, Merlin had a vision. He never told Douxie anything else. Morgan explained to him that one day... the Day of Unity will come. A mystery person will try to use this one special day to determine all magic's fate. That's why those who will be protect magic in the future... must get a message from Merlin. And Morgan and Merlin want to Douxie be one to deliver this message.

The old wizard implanted some kind of coded messages into Douxie's mind, then Merlin and Morgan gave him part of their immortality, making him semi-immortality

They told Douxie to hide himself away from the world. Wait to meet with people who will be called 'the Council of Four' till Unniass the palisman of Philomena will come to this realm to found him.

Douxie had sworn that he would not have reach the Order of the Keepers before the proper time. But sometimes the young wizard felt he should have told the Council of Four about a few things he know, or at least one of them. The Faction.

Douxie found out about this organization in the year 1959, but the dangerous group had existed way longer. The Faction appears to revolve around dark, ancient relics of the past and artifacts. Their leader under the mysterious alias of "the Lazarus", certainly seemed to know exceptionally much about magic and The Boiling Isles. Douxie don't know exactly the organization's goal, the Faction've been so secretive, Faction agents were able to appear and disappear so fast; and so it was impossible to trace them back to their headquarters.

However, Douxie've witnessed how they follows the orders of Lazarus. How they are willing to do anything just to get new artifacts. Often literally, over the dead bodies for the purpose... So, Douxie had no doubt that the Faction are the most evil people.

"No, but sometimes I have a feeling that something bad happens, and it'll be my fault. Because I didn't go to talk with the Order of the Keepers."

Seeing the sadness in Douxie's eyes, Archie hopped down from his perch behind the boy and sat on his lap. "Look, I know it's hard to wait in the shadow, but you do it 'cause you have to. For Merlin and Morgan. And for magic future."

Douxie meets his eyes with a sort of reflection, to he responds with head bump and soft purr. A act of warmth and comfort only a familiar can give. The boy looked at sky. "You're right."

"Like always." Archie smiled and jumped off his friend, "Come on, Douxie. Let's go home."

"Not yet." Douxie said while not looking at him, "I wants to know first if I'm right about Luz and her new friends."

Archie sighed, he could try to convince the teen wizard to back home... but Douxie's gotten in his head that he must find out why Luz is here. So, he will do it. "But we don't talk with them."

"Deal." Douxie agreed.
