(A/N: Okay, I'm back with yet another re-write. This time, it's "Family Starters". Let's see how this one turns out!)
It was a fine fall evening in the city of Petropolis. The weather was cool, but it's a little too dark to see anything right now, so let's head on over to Dudley and Kitty's house. They're probably still awake.
Sure enough, Dudley and Kitty are still awake. They're in their bedroom, and they're ready for bed, but they're not asleep yet.
Dudley glimpsed at Kitty and noticed that she seemed a little unhappy.
"Is something wrong, Kitty?" Dudley asked his wife.
"No, nothing's wrong. I'm fine." Kitty replied.
"Kitty, we both know that I know you better than that. You look unhappy, and that's not normal. What's the problem?" Dudley pressed.
Kitty didn't answer right away. She really didn't know how to tell Dudley what was on her mind because she was afraid of how he would react.
"Kitty, whatever it is, you can tell me." Dudley assured her.
"I... I wanna... have a... a baby." Kitty answered, clearly very nervous.
Dudley was silent as he thought about what Kitty said.
"What brought this on?" Dudley asked.
"Back when we celebrated our 2nd anniversary, Mom mentioned to me that she wants to be a grandma, but I told her that I didn't know if we wanted kids yet. However, I recently started thinking about having kids, and I began to like the idea." Kitty said.
"I never really thought about having kids before." Dudley said.
"I know. But I'm a little worried about having kids, since they're a big responsibility, and you weren't really that responsible before we got married." Kitty said.
"I started learning responsibility when I wanted to marry you. Look at how responsible I am now." Dudley said.
"I know. But I mean that when you're a parent, you have to put your child's needs before your own." Kitty said.
"Ohhh..." Dudley said. After a moment of silence, Dudley said, "I'm going to have to think about this."
"Okay." said Kitty.
"But I do know that you've pretty much got one thing handled if we do have kids. You can teach them about proper hygiene and health, since you were trying to educate kids on things their own parents are teaching them when we were supposed to be teaching them about being secret agents on Career Day." Dudley said. (A/N: He's referring to what happened in "Bored of Education".)
"Yeah, I remember that. But I'd probably have it easier teaching it to our own kids. If we have any. They'd probably appreciate it better than those kids did." Kitty said.
"Like I said, it was their parents' job to teach them that sort of stuff. Not ours." Dudley said.
"I guess you're right. If I had just told them the good things about being a secret agent in the first place, we wouldn't have gotten into that mess." Kitty sighed.
"Probably. Let's get some sleep." Dudley said.
"Okay. Good night, Dudley." Kitty said as she got under the covers.
"Good night, Kitty." Dudley said, turning out the light before snuggling close to his wife.
The next morning, Kitty awoke to the sound of the alarm going off. She quickly shut it off, then turned to Dudley, who still lay asleep next to her. He looked really happy, and that made Kitty smile. She knew he was having a really good dream, but as much as she hated to spoil his happiness, she had to wake him up.
"Dudley, it's time to get up." Kitty said, gently shaking him by the shoulder.
"I love you, too, Kitty. I never thought I'd be this happy." Dudley said, still asleep.
Kitty blushed at her husband's loving words, even though she knew he was still in his dream. But she knew he wasn't awake yet, so she shook him a little harder as she said, "Wake up, Dudley."
This time, Dudley woke up, but when the world came into focus, his happiness quickly turned into disappointment.
"Aw, c'mon!" Dudley groaned.
"I'm sorry I had to wake you from the dream you were having, but we have work today." Kitty told him.
"I know." Dudley said with a sigh.
Kitty realized that Dudley was never this disappointed after waking up from a good dream. Then again, the words she heard him say in his sleep weren't normal, either. She said, "Did you have a good dream?"
"It was a nice one." Dudley said.
"It sounded like it was a lot better than nice. You wanna tell me about it?" asked Kitty.
"I should, since it has to do with something we talked about last night." Dudley said.
"Do tell." Kitty said.
"You said you want to have a baby. Well, last night, I dreamed that we had a baby, and the love I felt for the little tyke... I don't think I've ever felt so much love for one person. So when you woke me up and I found out that we didn't have a baby... we can try for a baby whenever you want." Dudley said.
Kitty was happy that Dudley was willing to start a family. She would've suggested a time to do it, but...
"You were the one who wasn't sure when I told you I wanted one. So you can decide when we'll try." Kitty told him.
"I was gonna say 'tonight', but I don't think we should do it on a work night, so maybe we should try on Friday night, since there's no crime on the weekends." Dudley said.
"Good idea." Kitty said, giving her husband a big hug.
And on Friday night, they got ready to try for a baby. But I'm going to spare you the details because some of you might not like reading stories about what they were doing, but mostly because I don't like writing about stuff like that, and if I did, then this story would be rated 'M', and I'm never gonna let that happen.
The next morning, the couple woke up late, but they seemed pretty happy.
"Did it work? Are you pregnant?" Dudley asked Kitty.
"I don't know, Dudley. And we may not find out for a while." Kitty replied.
"How long do we have to wait before we find out?" Dudley asked.
"Let's give it a month or two. We should probably know within that time-frame. Sound good?" Kitty asked.
"Okay." Dudley agreed.
So Dudley and Kitty were the first ones to try for a baby in this fic. Will they have one? If the title is any indication, then you already know the answer to that question. Stay tuned to find out more!
